EATING salt in moderation is not a risk to health, scientists say.![]()
Chris Hardwick is not quite out at AMC, but the network is taking action in light of allegations of abuse leveled by Hardwick’s ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra.
The network on Saturday announced that it will not air the second season of Talking With Chris Hardwick, which was set to premiere this Sunday night at 11/10c with guest Donald Glover. What’s more, Hardwick will no longer moderate planned AMC and BBC America panels at San Diego Comic-Con in July, where he was set to host both The Walking Dead and Doctor Who.
AMC’s full statement reads as follows:
We have had a positive working relationship with Chris Hardwick for many years. We take the troubling allegations that surfaced yesterday very seriously. While we assess the situation, Talking With Chris Hardwick will not air on AMC, and Chris has decided to step aside from moderating planned AMC and BBC America panels at Comic-Con International in San Diego next month.
The network’s decision comes two days after Dykstra, an actress and former Nerdist web host, published a blog post on Medium accusing an unnamed ex of emotional and sexual abuse during their three-year relationship; many quickly connected her account to her relationship with Hardwick. In response, Hardwick released a statement on Friday, denying that he ever sexually assaulted her.
AMC isn’t the only outlet cutting ties with Hardwick. His former company, Nerdist Industries, released a statement on Friday that insisted that Hardwick had “no operational involvement with Nerdist” for years, and scrubbed all references of him from its website.
The network has not yet revealed a decision regarding the future of post-Walking Dead talk show Talking Dead, which Hardwick has hosted since 2011. He also hosts similar post-episode discussion shows for fellow AMC dramas Better Call Saul and Preacher. Over on NBC, Hardwick hosts game show The Wall.

He’s Midwestern all right. Looks you in the eye, dotes on his family, goes to church, makes sure to exercise. And standing in a nondescript Emporia parking lot on a November day, dressed in a black suit and orange tie and carrying a notebook and iPad, Ed O’Malley could well be selling encyclopedias — or Bibles.
But this born-and-bred Kansan is selling himself, not books, in a bid to put Republican Sam Brownback’s unpopular governorship to rest. “I applaud [Brownback’s] willingness to try something, but his policy lacked logic, it lacked strategy, and I believe it failed miserably,” he says. “We’re paying the price.”
Brownback’s sweeping 2012 tax cuts — enacted with a promise to bring in big business and, in turn, jobs — failed to deliver. Small businesses pocketed the savings rather than using them for hiring. And those big firms? Never showed. Now, with a huge budget deficit, the state has cut back on policing, social services, education and state contributions to the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS). The state legislature just recently reversed the tax law, but violent crime is up, foster care is in shambles — dozens of children have reportedly gone missing in the system — and teachers are fleeing the profession. Even autumn’s withered cornstalks reinforce the need for a new spring.
O’Malley’s “big and bold” promise is to make Kansas schools the best on the planet by trusting teachers to determine how schools should be managed and boosting funding.
So who will lead the Sunflower State out of the clouds? There are 22 hopefuls in all — 12 Republicans, seven Democrats and three independents — and notably all but one are men. O’Malley, an ultramarathon runner who’s completed two 44-mile races, isn’t fazed by the considerable competition. To his right: Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a love-him-or-hate-him immigration hardliner now helping lead an election integrity commission for President Donald Trump. To his left: a resurgent and optimistic Kansas Democratic Party, which had the highest net gain of legislative seats in any state last year.
Still, O’Malley is confident, perhaps naively so, that if he goes door to door speaking to Kansans and pushes enough moderates to vote, he’ll prevail by focusing on education, civil service and leadership. The 42-year-old likes to talk — gesturing with his hands and never once glancing at his giant silver watch — describing his ”Forrest Gump moment” on the school bus in seventh grade when he met Joanna, the woman he’d eventually marry. It was his first day at a new school, and she was the only kid who spoke to him. Today they have three children and live in Wichita, where Joanna, a teacher by trade, is a homemaker.
O’Malley launched his political career in 1999 as an aide to Gov. Bill Graves, delving into everything from agriculture to retirement funds. He then lobbied for the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce before getting elected to the legislature in 2002 at age 29, joining what newspapers called the “kiddie caucus” alongside six other under-30s, including Stephanie Sharp. As young legislators who’d been lobbyists in the capital, Sharp says, “We knew what needed to be fixed and how to do it.” She’s now a political consultant and backs O’Malley’s campaign.
In 2005, O’Malley worked to rewrite the school finance plan to address ongoing lawsuits demanding more school funding. Multiple plans were drawn up and kicked back by the court. Finally, Sharp explains, “[Ed] and seven others locked themselves in a room — with a good representation of rural, urban, suburban, big schools, little schools, bipartisanship — and hammered out a plan that they thought they could get passed.” It worked and will be a key selling point for O’Malley during a campaign that could turn on Kansas’ ability to reclaim its academic prowess.
Teachers in even the well-heeled Shawnee Mission School District in Johnson County, in suburban Kansas City, are getting fed up. Lisa Siegel, a paraprofessional in special education in the district, explains that depleted state coffers have led to fewer salary bumps, diminished resources and “plummeting” teacher morale. The situation has also resulted in larger class sizes, which means less one-on-one time with students and more behavioral problems with those who are struggling. “The Kansas legislature and governor have ‘robbed’ KPERS twice already to pay for other services with the promise of paying us back,” Siegel adds.
O’Malley’s “big and bold” promise is to make Kansas schools the best on the planet by trusting teachers to determine how schools should be managed and boosting funding. In turn, first-rate schools — goes the logic — will bring businesses and jobs to the state. But will the candidate’s centrist message reach voters? Sharp points to O’Malley as the only Republican running from the “beautiful middle” — a place where she believes the majority of Republican Kansans are aligned. The trick, though, will be getting a mass of moderates to show up for a GOP primary.
And there’s an additional hurdle: O’Malley has been out of the political game for a whopping 11 years, and he’s going head-to-head with the high-profile Kobach.“[Kobach’s] not right for Kansas,” O’Malley says, noting that the state can’t afford anybody “who doesn’t want the job for this job.” The implication? That Kobach has his sights set on a bigger target than the governor’s mansion. “For seven years, Kris has been fighting for Kansas,” counters his communications director, Samantha Poetter. “[Kobach] has turned down multiple opportunities in the Trump administration because his heart is here in Kansas. To suggest otherwise is nothing more than an overused political talking point.”
O’Malley, meanwhile, has spent the past decade as CEO of the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita, helping foster community leadership to tackle challenges with bipartisan solutions. This experience and his state-centric focus, O’Malley says, is why he’s best qualified to lead Kansas out of crisis.
It’s a long haul in a crowded race, but O’Malley is a distance runner — and he’s sticking to the middle road.

YouTube had its hands full lately, dealing with disturbing channels and videos masquerading as family-friendly offerings. Now, YouTube chief Susan Wojcicki has explained how the platform plans to keep a closer eye on the videos it hosts going forward by applying the lessons it learned fighting violent extremism content. Wojcicki says the company has begun training its algorithms to improve child safety on the platform and to be better at detecting hate speech. To be able to teach its algorithms which videos need to be removed and which can stay, though, it needs more people’s help. That’s why it aims to appoint as many as 10,000 people across Google to review content that might violate its policies.
YouTube says its machine-learning algorithms help take down 70 percent of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload. By training those algorithms to do the same for other types of videos, such as those questionable uploads that targeted children, the platform will be able to take them down a lot faster than it currently can.
In addition to getting 10,000 Google employees’ help, YouTube also plans to conjure up stricter criteria to consult when deciding which channels are eligible for advertising. At the moment, creators need at least 10,000 views to be able to earn ad money, but it sounds like the platform will also expand its team of reviewers to vet channels and videos and “ensure ads are only running where they should.”
Finally, YouTube promises to be a lot more transparent. In 2018, it’ll start publishing reports containing data on the flags it gets, along with the the actions it takes to remove any video and comment that violates its policies.

]]>Last month, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, vowed to restore “moderate” Islam to the kingdom considered to be “home” of the religion. The Gulf monarchy currently follows a Salafist or Wahhabi version of Islam that is often described as being “ultraconservative” and administered through Islamic Sharia law. In what appears to be a direct reference to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Erdogan denounced a “moderate” interpretation of Islam in a speech delivered at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Women’s Advisory Council on Friday.
“The term ‘moderate Islam’ is being lathered up again. The patent of moderate Islam belongs to the West. There is no moderate or immoderate Islam; Islam is one. The aim of using such terms is to weaken Islam,” Erdogan said in Ankara.
“Perhaps the person voicing this concept thinks it belongs to him. No, it does not belong to you,” he added, recalling, that he was “asked about ‘moderate Islam’ at meetings in the European Parliament many years ago.”
The thrust of Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030, is to socially transform the Wahhabi brand of Sunni Islam, which bans gender mixing, concerts and cinemas. Starting in the summer of next year, women in Saudi Arabia will be permitted to drive. In the new year, women would also be allowed to attend sporting events as the monarchy continues to usher in its liberalization reforms.
Last month the Prince unveiled a plan to construct a $ 500-billion state of the art city across its borders into Jordan and Egypt. The new mega-city is to be erected with the aim of diversifying the Arab country’s economy and reducing its dependency on oil.
Riyadh’s reforms have been accompanied by a massive anti-corruption drive, which saw a purge of the kingdom’s political and business elite, including 11 princes. The kingdom’s closest ally, the US, has welcomed the campaign, with President Donald Trump saying those arrested had been “milking their country for years”.

“They say we will return to moderate Islam, but they still don’t give women the right to drive. Is there such a thing in Islam? I guess they will give this right when they turn to the moderate one,” Erdogan noted Friday.
The Turkish president also lashed out against the EU for approving a series of so-called “burka bans” introduced in recent years, calling it a “discrimination against Muslim women.”
“Headscarves are gradually being banned in EU states with the public – personal space trick, attempting to bar Muslim women from entering social life. Attempts to incarcerate Muslim women in their homes is spreading like a virus,” Erdogan said.
Traditional Islamic head and face coverings have long been controversial in Europe, where they are often seen as incompatible with secular values. France became the first European country to impose a ban on full-face coverings in 2011. Belgium followed suit shortly thereafter. German MPs approved a partial ban on full-face veils this April, saying it’s the country’s duty to present itself “in an ideologically and religiously neutral manner.” Austria’s parliament also endorsed a package of measures that outlaws distribution of the Koran and wearing traditional Islamic full-face veils in public.
“Those who are teaching us lessons on human rights are unfortunately applauding as the most basic human rights are being trampled in their countries,” said Erdogan.

Speaking at an arms export commission in Moscow, Putin stressed that while selling weapons is a multibillion-dollar business for Russia, it ensures that the bottom line never undermines the stability of the regions to which the weapons are delivered. He said this approach contrasted with that of “some actors in the arms market,” refraining from naming the culprits, but apparently referring to the US and several of its allies.
“Instead of a genuine fight against terrorist groups we see a simulation of this fight while uncontrolled arms deliveries grow. One day the weapons go to so-called ‘moderate opposition’ in this or that place, and the next day they are in the hands of radicals and terrorists,” Putin said. “It appears that the conflict zones have become for some just a lucrative business, a link in the chain of ‘gray’ schemes of supply of arms to nations and regions suffering from military and political instability.”
The US and its allies such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia have supported armed groups opposing the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad over the past six years, including through clandestine supplies of weapons and military hardware.
On too many occasions these weapons ended up in the hands of radical Islamist groups, including Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front, both designated as terrorists by the US. The problem was acknowledged in Washington, but it didn’t stop the deliveries.
US arms supplied to state buyers rather than militant groups are also not always safe. IS infamously captured a large arsenal of American military vehicles and heavy weapons when it seized the Iraqi city of Mosul in 2014. The majority of weapons seized from IS by the advancing Syrian Arab Army, which were demonstrated by Damascus, were American-made, military journalist Viktor Litovkin told RT.
“Just a week ago the Syrian government army showed the stockpiles of weapons it took from IS. There were assault rifles, machine guns, other small arms, anti-tank missiles, mortars and whatever. It took almost an entire stadium to hold. There were even drones. And they were made in America,” he said.
A lack of accountability for US-provided weapons is also endemic in Afghanistan. Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of lethal hardware disappeared without a trace in the county since the US-led invasion in 2001.
US claims that it has safeguards to prevent such incidents are empty talk not founded in reality, military analyst Konstantin Sivkov told RT. “They don’t control even the people they train. A couple of years ago CIA sources admitted that an absolute majority of the ‘moderate opposition’ fighters they had trained ended up in the ranks of IS. Only a handful remained moderate. And they took their US-provided arms to Islamic State too.”
“Armed irregular forces have an inclination to morph, that’s part of their nature. So there is absolutely no way to control their arms,” he added. Sivkov agreed with Putin that ‘gray’ arms deliveries could be profitable to those involved, including manufacturers, senior officials making decisions on the supply chain and intermediaries on the ground.

A small political party entirely based in Northern Ireland that has been out of the spotlight for years could emerge as a decisive force in allowing the Conservative Party to form a majority in the House of Commons after Theresa May’s disastrous campaign result in the 2017 general election.
The Conservatives won 318 seats, eight short of a Commons majority of 326.
Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) won 10 seats and is therefore a strong contender for becoming a coalition partner for the Tories. Some will remember the DUP as the party led by firebrand unionist preacher Ian Paisley through the 1990s.
The party is now led by Arlene Foster, a lawyer whose father was shot in an IRA gun attack when she was a child.
The results from Northern Ireland in the Westminster election reflect a continuing shift in votes away from the moderates in Northern Ireland that have been crucial in helping to secure peace and power-sharing arrangements for Belfast over the past two decades.
Voters in Northern Ireland elect 18 MPs to Westminster. 10 seats went to the DUP, the more hardline of the mainstream Protestant parties, while another seven went to Sinn Fein, the Irish Republican party. Sinn Fein MPs, if elected, do not take their seats in the British parliament in a long-standing and continuing protest against British rule.
The moderate parties, the Irish nationalist SDLP and the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP)– which at one point was an official political partner of the British Conservatives — now have no seats in Westminster. They have been wiped out.
The SDLP lost three seats, all held by former party leaders. It was the party led by John Hume, who was instrumental in helping to broker the IRA ceasefires in the 1990s. Hume was also later a key player in the negotiations for the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
Another key player in that was David Trimble, the former UUP leader, who together with Hume was awarded the Nobel Peace in 1998 for their efforts on the Good Friday Agreement. The UUP lost its two seats.
Theresa May is reported to be speaking with advisors on how to form a government. The DUP will surely be among her considerations.
