Ford’s new SmartLink plug-in modem brings older models up to snuff https://briefnews.eu/fords-new-smartlink-plug-in-modem-brings-older-models-up-to-snuff/ https://briefnews.eu/fords-new-smartlink-plug-in-modem-brings-older-models-up-to-snuff/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 21:55:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fords-new-smartlink-plug-in-modem-brings-older-models-up-to-snuff/

A new device will allow millions of older-model Ford vehicles to be upgraded to include the same connectivity perks found in newer vehicles.

The FordPass SmartLink device will enable features like a 4G LTE WiFi, smartphone integration of key fob features (remote engine start, lock and unlock, vehicle health and security alerts), and vehicle location tracking. It’ll allow users to set “geo-fences” around certain areas to monitor, via email or text message, when the vehicle enters them — perfect for parents of mischievous teenagers. It also resets to the settings the last time the vehicle was in use, meaning the heated seats will reactivate if you left that feature on.

The device, which is about the size of a deck of cards and plugs into the onboard diagnostics port below the steering wheel, will become available to owners of 2010 through 2017 model-year Ford vehicles. It will be available in the coming weeks. Ford is working to educate its dealer network about the new option, since they will be the ones selling and installing it.

FordPass Smartlink will be available for $ 16.99 a month, plus installation fee, for 24 months. That includes the cost of the device, telematics services between the vehicle and Ford, and a 30-day or 1-gigabyte trial (whichever comes first) of the service through Verizon, the exclusive data provider, meaning Internet service is also extra.

Close observers of Ford may notice that the company first announced SmartLink back in early 2017. But Dennis Carnevale, FordPass SmartLink marketing manager, said the company decided to make the device compatible with the FordPass mobile app, which was already integrated with its embedded vehicle modems.

“From a customer experience point of view, it’s seamless,” Carnevale said.

Ford says its plans to have all of its vehicles built with similar connectivity by 2019.

Samsung reportedly working on Exynos 5G modem to power its phones in 2019 https://briefnews.eu/samsung-reportedly-working-on-exynos-5g-modem-to-power-its-phones-in-2019/ https://briefnews.eu/samsung-reportedly-working-on-exynos-5g-modem-to-power-its-phones-in-2019/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2018 23:08:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/samsung-reportedly-working-on-exynos-5g-modem-to-power-its-phones-in-2019/

Samsung only briefly touched upon 5G at CES last week, but behind closed doors, the Korean company was reportedly showing off Exynos 5G, a prototype 5G-compliant modem designed for mobile devices. Described by BusinessKorea as part of Samsung’s plan “to significantly reduce its reliance on U.S. telecom modem chips for 5G smartphones,” Exynos 5G could enable next-generation Samsung phones to use an even higher percentage of Samsung-made components. The company expects to start using Exynos 5G in 2019 phones.

BusinessKorea reports that the Exynos 5G modem is forward-compatible, complying with the 3GPP’s draft standard for Release 15, the initial 5G specification set to be completed in June. Exynos 5G notably includes support for the 3GPP’s non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) standards, with NSA meant to support connection to older LTE towers, and SA for newer 5G networks built solely with 5G infrastructure.

The 5G modem radically increases radio frequency support, both in diversity of bands and the ability to use multiple bands at once. It supports radio bands ranging from low-frequency 600MHz to ultra-high-frequency 39GHz, as well as past mid-frequency bands used in 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE phones. To increase bandwidth, it can use carrier aggregation to bundle up to eight 100-MHz bands, reaching download speeds of up to 5Gbps — 10 times faster than common LTE, and 5 times faster than peak LTE service.

Qualcomm and Intel unveiled their Snapdragon X50 and XMM8060 modems last year, predicting that phones using the chips will launch in the first half and middle of 2019, respectively. Samsung is reportedly targeting early 2019 for the first smartphones with the Exynos 5G modem inside, and will actively participate in Release 16 — the complete 5G standard — expected in late 2021 or 2022.

Comcast’s xFi Advanced Gateway modem is now available nationwide https://briefnews.eu/comcasts-xfi-advanced-gateway-modem-is-now-available-nationwide/ https://briefnews.eu/comcasts-xfi-advanced-gateway-modem-is-now-available-nationwide/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 05:19:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/comcasts-xfi-advanced-gateway-modem-is-now-available-nationwide/

It’s no secret that modems provided by your ISP can leave a lot to be desired. While we generally recommend you use your own hardware when it comes to your internet connection, plenty of people just go with the standard default modem and router. Comcast is making that process just a little bit easier thanks to the xFi Advanced Gateway modem and router. The modem, which the company is billing as the most advanced device it’s ever made, made its debut back in May, but starting today it’s available in every market that Comcast offers gigabit internet.

The company’s goal with this new modem/router is to make setting up, connecting to and using the internet as simple as possible. Comcast’s SVP of Hardware Development, Fraser Stirling, told Engadget: “I want your parents to stop phoning you about their internet connection.” That was one of the primary goals when designing the interface of xFi app, which we’ve previously covered in detail. It allows you to set up your WiFi, change and customize settings, set up profiles for use and more. If you want to turn off the WiFi to your kids’ devices at 9PM, you can easily do that in the xFi app.

The real advantage of the Gateway modem, though is in its speeds. When developing the tech of this device, the team recognized that WiFi is the primary way that people use the internet, even for bandwidth-heavy activities such as streaming video. The goal, then, was to increase the WiFi speeds of the xFi Advanced Gateway, rather than expecting customers to use a wired Ethernet connection.

The modem uses a 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi standard, which allows for the possibility of gigabit WiFi. Now, that’s not likely to happen in practice in a standard house because of obstructions like walls and floors, but the team was able to get 1.2 to 1.3 GB per second speeds over WiFi in tests. The standards also supports MU-MIMO (multiple input, multiple output), which means you can connect a larger number of devices more efficiently to a single network.

It’s important to note, though, that these features aren’t specific to Comcast’s xFi Advanced Gateway. This is a standard that is being applied across modems, routers and devices, but as with any new standard, it’s slow going. There still aren’t a whole lot of devices that have this advanced tech, and they’ll cost you. And all of this, of course, is dependent on your internet speed from your provider; if you aren’t paying for gigabit internet, you won’t see a lot of these speed benefits.

Another goal with the xFi Advanced Gateway was to make the Internet of Things, or IoT, as easy as possible. The current setup of device to hub to app to router to modem isn’t easy for people who aren’t tech savvy — again, the team wanted to ensure that customers at multiple levels of tech literacy can take advantage of this modem’s advanced features. The Gateway has multiple radios onboard — including Bluetooth, LE, Zigbee and Thread — to make sure it can seamlessly connect to IoT devices. The idea was to ensure that current and future IoT devices are easily compatible with this modem for the long term.

This Gateway is intended to work across a large area, thanks to the 8×8 antenna array, which includes eight antennas to transmit WiFi signals and another eight to receive them. However, if that isn’t quite enough for your home, Comcast is introducing a mesh WiFi system early next year. It’s currently in an advanced trial stage.

The bottom line is that you’re almost always going to get better customization options and more control when you buy your own hardware, rather than using what your ISP provides. But for the millions of customers who do (according to Stirling, around 10 million people use Comcast’s modems), this is a good option for those who want gigabit speeds but don’t want to maintain their own equipment (like your parents).

While it will be some time before 5G LTE becomes standard, Apple is thinking ahead about how to best incorporate 5G technology into its iPhones. According to a Fast Company report, Apple has been working with Intel to incorporate the chipmaker’s 5G modems in future iPhones while talks with Qualcomm, the world’s biggest modem supplier, have been “limited.”

Qualcomm currently has a more advanced 5G modem than Intel does, but Intel reportedly has “multiple thousands” of employees working on improving its 5G chip. Intel first announced its 5G modem at CES 2017 and announced recently that it completed a “full end-to-end 5G call based on its early 5G silicon.” While Qualcomm’s 5G modem has more specialized carrier features, reports suggest that those features won’t be “widely adopted” by all carriers. Also, Qualcomm’s chips are particularly equipped to support CDMA networks but those may become obsolete over time as 5G infiltrates the industry.

An iPhone with a 5G modem would theoretically be capable of connection speeds of one gigabit per second or more, but the industry’s transition to support 5G will take some time. The report suggests that Intel could supply a 5G modem for an iPhone debuting in 2019 or 2020.

The latest news in the Apple-Qualcomm saga suggests that Apple may be trying to leave the chipmaker behind as soon as next year. A report by The Wall Street Journal states that Apple is designing iPhones and iPads that do not use Qualcomm components. Instead, the tech giant may source modem chips from Intel or MediaTek.

Apple began stepping away from Qualcomm chips with the introduction of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, both of which us a combination of Qualcomm and Intel chips. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which came out in September, also use a combination of Qualcomm and Intel chips.

According to the report, the decision came after Qualcomm withheld software needed by Apple to test the chips in its device prototypes. This reportedly happened after Apple filed a federal lawsuit against Qualcomm in January for charging billions in patent royalty fees “for technologies they have nothing to do with.”

You’re wasting money if you use a modem from your cable company — here’s a cheap replacement https://briefnews.eu/youre-wasting-money-if-you-use-a-modem-from-your-cable-company-heres-a-cheap-replacement/ https://briefnews.eu/youre-wasting-money-if-you-use-a-modem-from-your-cable-company-heres-a-cheap-replacement/#respond Wed, 07 Jun 2017 18:39:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youre-wasting-money-if-you-use-a-modem-from-your-cable-company-heres-a-cheap-replacement/ The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. arris cable modemAmazonWe’ve said it before, but it always bears repeating: There’s a good chance you’re throwing money away if you rent a cable modem from your internet service provider.

If you can replace it with one of your own, make the switch — over time, all the monthly fees you forgo will help your new modem pay for itself.

The Arris SurfBoard SB6141 tends to be the consensus pick among potential replacements — it has over 16,000 5-star reviews on Amazon, and it has been recommended by reviewers at The Wirecutter, Lifehacker, and Tom’s Guide. It supports the (current) most common DOCSIS 3.0 standard, and allows for speeds that should be more than fast enough for most people, and, by all accounts, it’s reliable.

The SB6141 won’t work with every ISP — Verizon is the notable absentee — but it covers most of the major players, including Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, and Charter.

Most ISPs charge around $ 10 a month for their modem, on top of the price you pay for its service. Through a warehouse deal, Arris’ option costs just under $ 25, so it’ll pay for itself almost immediately. As mentioned earlier, its speed will be fine for people who want to do normal tasks — browse the web, stream video, etc., although the network could get congested if multiple people are using a lot of bandwidth at once.

The other thing you need to know is that this is just a modem, not a WiFi router; that said, you can pair it with this one from Netgear (another warehouse deal) and spend around $ 50 for both. If you already have a router you’re happy with, there’s no need to buy a new one.

In any case, if you haven’t made the move yet, this is a good time to start putting some cable money back in your pocket.

Here’s the Lowest Price We’ve Seen on the Best Modem For Most People https://briefnews.eu/heres-the-lowest-price-weve-seen-on-the-best-modem-for-most-people/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-the-lowest-price-weve-seen-on-the-best-modem-for-most-people/#respond Thu, 20 Apr 2017 19:51:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-the-lowest-price-weve-seen-on-the-best-modem-for-most-people/

Every modem rental fee you pay to your ISP is padding for their bottom line, and a total rip-off for you. Fortunately, you can buy your own modem for a relatively small upfront cost, and knock a few bucks off your monthly bill.

There used to be a general consensus that Motorola’s SB6141 was the best modem for most cable internet subscribers, but the newer SB6183 is supports double the maximum download speeds (686mbps), which is important for future-proofing purposes, if nothing else. We’ve seen refurbs on this model in the $ 50-$ 60 range, but $ 40's an all-time low.
