Super Mario Odyssey modder TheSunCat takes you through his insanely difficult custom level for the game.

Since a simple method for unlocking most Switch hardware was revealed back in March, much of the hacking community has been focused on developing homebrew software/emulators for the system. But a small community of Super Mario Odyssey fans has been using their expanded Switch access to modify the game with new costumes, gameplay features, and even entirely new levels.

The modifications started a few months ago with simple save file edits that let players overflow the game’s coin counter or unlock all the game’s costumes, including some costumes that have yet to be officially released. From there, hackers started to figure out how to make cosmetic edits to in-game files, leading to mods that replace the power moons with old-school power stars or give Mario a Sonic the Hedgehog outfit, for instance. And why listen to that boring Mario music when you can replace it with “Despacito” (or watch a “Despacito” music video on a screen in Snow Kingdom)?

It wasn’t long before the hackers were digging into the game code to modify the way Super Mario Odyssey plays, too. Hacker Simon Aarons created a mod that lets players run with super speed and “moon jump” to otherwise impossible heights. Others have made mods that let Mario breathe indefinitely underwater or play as Bowser in unintended areas of the game.

Modders turn Nintendo Switch into a full-fledged Linux tablet https://briefnews.eu/modders-turn-nintendo-switch-into-a-full-fledged-linux-tablet/ https://briefnews.eu/modders-turn-nintendo-switch-into-a-full-fledged-linux-tablet/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 15:36:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/modders-turn-nintendo-switch-into-a-full-fledged-linux-tablet/

For all of its Nintendo customizations, the Switch is ultimately a tablet running a garden variety NVIDIA Tegra processor — and that means it can potentially handle the same software as other mobile devices. To prove that point, the fail0verflow team has shown a Switch running an honest-to-goodness Linux distribution. The touchscreen, networking and accelerated 3D graphics are all functioning, as evidenced by the modders tweeting from the Switch and running a benchmark. You’re not about to run Steam games on it (many Linux apps aren’t built for ARM-based chips), but you could theoretically use the Switch as a basic computer.

Fail0verflow hasn’t explained exactly how the necessary exploit works, but it may be easier than you think. The team previously noted that it’s taking advantage of a bug in the Switch’s bootrom (the fixed low-level code that runs the moment you turn the device on), which prevents Nintendo from patching it on current consoles. You don’t need a mod chip, either. The only way for Nintendo to thwart this is to release updated hardware, and that might not happen for a while.

There’s no word yet on whether or not the exploit and techniques involved will be made widely accessible. Don’t expect to try this at home, then, even if you’re willing to throw caution (and your warranty) to the wind. As it stands, this is more of a because-we-can hack than something many Switch owners would find practical. You’d probably get better value out of running homebrew games, and that’s a tougher challenge given that Nintendo can easily update its operating system to block unauthorized software.

When Civilization VI debuted in October 2016, I played it, and I enjoyed it. And then I stopped playing a few weeks after launch. This was earliest I’d ever abandoned a Civ game, the build-your-empire franchise that first debuted in 1991. For nearly 27 years and over 40 million games sold, the six games in the PC franchise (along with some console and mobile side-quests like Civilization: Revolutions) have dominated my gaming time.

But that ended with Civilization VI. Even with the changes to cities with districts, the more cartoony and fun art style (come on, who doesn’t love this Teddy Roosevelt, even if he’s slimmer than Firaxis’s original take on the 26th U.S. president), and better AI, it didn’t get its hooks into me. I only played about 70 hours before I set it aside. That’s not a lot for Civ. Remember, this is the series that spawned the “one more turn” meme about playing until 3 a.m. to see how your civilization expands and waiting to finish off that research project.

Over the holidays, I decided to see what the modders were up to on Steam Workshop … and I fell into a Civilization VI hole, playing about 110 hours since. I added mods that fixed some of the early-game issues, like a simple one that gives you a builder when you start, and another that serves up an overhaul of trading system between world leaders.

And this is why I love PC gaming so much — people taking a game and making it better, without the devs getting involved (even if the Rise and Fall expansion is coming soon). Modders see problems and are fixing them. They’re bringing new content on a regular basis. I only wish I could pay them for it.

Hmm … maybe it’s time to see what the The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim community is up to.

Rockstar Games, Take Two seem to back off of PC game modders https://briefnews.eu/rockstar-games-take-two-seem-to-back-off-of-pc-game-modders/ https://briefnews.eu/rockstar-games-take-two-seem-to-back-off-of-pc-game-modders/#respond Sat, 24 Jun 2017 10:18:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rockstar-games-take-two-seem-to-back-off-of-pc-game-modders/

Earlier this month, Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two angered the PC gaming community after sending a cease and desist letter to the developers of the OpenIV modding tool. OpenIV allowed people to create modifications for GTA IV and GTA V single player, but according to its creators, the letter said their tool could “allow third parties to defeat security features of its software and modify that software in violation Take-Two’s rights.” Facing the threat of legal action, they announced on June 14th that they would stop distributing OpenIV.

Now, after revolt by players including a campaign of bad ratings for the GTA games on Steam and a Change.org petition with over 77,000 signatures, Rockstar Games may have worked out a solution. A post on its support forum today said that Take Two has agreed that it will “generally” not take legal action against third party projects as long as they meet certain guidelines.

After discussions with Take-Two, Take-Two has agreed that it generally will not take legal action against third-party projects involving Rockstar’s PC games that are single-player, non-commercial, and respect the intellectual property (IP) rights of third parties. This does not apply to (i) multiplayer or online services; (ii) tools, files, libraries, or functions that could be used to impact multiplayer or online services, or (iii) use or importation of other IP (including other Rockstar IP) in the project.

While it went out of its way to say that this is not a waiver, and “is not a license, and it does not constitute endorsement, approval, or authorization,” it may be enough for modders to breathe easy. Rockstar representatives have told PC Gamer and Motherboard that it is in contact with the makers of OpenIV, apparently to try to prevent people from using it to affect the GTA Online multiplayer. There’s no word from the team yet, but today the tool received an updated build.

Modders deserve to be paid — but Bethesda’s Creation Club isn’t enough https://briefnews.eu/modders-deserve-to-be-paid-but-bethesdas-creation-club-isnt-enough/ https://briefnews.eu/modders-deserve-to-be-paid-but-bethesdas-creation-club-isnt-enough/#respond Sat, 17 Jun 2017 08:27:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/modders-deserve-to-be-paid-but-bethesdas-creation-club-isnt-enough/

Arguably, no company in modern games has benefited from the work of modders more than Bethesda. My first experience with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind role-playing game over a decade ago involved installing it, meeting the first few inhabitants of Seyda Need, shaking my head in horror, and then typing “morrowind face mod” into Google. (It worked, and it was great.)

Every Bethesda game since has benefitted tremendously from the work of modders, even to the point where for many players, it’s almost impossible to imagine a game without them. Hundreds of music tracks and enemy rebalancing in Fallout 3; full conversions for Oblivion; gorgeous weather and fan patches making the Bethesda-published New Vegas the classic it should have been; everything Skyrim — from raunchy sex to fishing to making the civil war functional; to the giant packages of settlement building in Fallout 4. Half a million people still play Skyrim every fortnight, and it’s impossible to imagine that long of a tail without people creating new characters, quests, weapons, lands, systems, and terrifying dragon reskins constantly, and for free.

Above: New Vegas may look slightly better than you remember with mods like Nevada Skies

So it’s no surprise that Bethesda’s games have been at the center of the discussion surrounding the mainstreaming of user modifications, from the aborted attempt to sell mods on Steam to the introduction of mods on console (and the complications arising from this.) With their new Creation Club announcement, Bethesda is once again pushing the boundaries of how modders are treated.

Creation Club is unlikely to feel like a full revamp of how mods are made and distributed, however. In order to bypass the problems encountered by the disastrous Steam mods initiative, Bethesda is going to be involved in the entire process. This looks more like a system involving contractors being hired to create semi-official DLC instead of a change in how mods are distributed and understood in general. (It’s also not terribly different from what Firaxis did with XCOM 2, although with an open application process.)

That would be unfortunate because the game industry as a whole could benefit from a successful mainstreaming of modding. Modders themselves provide immense amounts of labor, generating incredible value for games like Skyrim, and deserve compensation. Both players and games themselves from more people understanding and playing mods that make their experiences more compelling or long-lasting.

There’s a key issue that stands in the way of any attempt to legitimize mods and modders, however: the modifications themselves can vary wildly in terms of quality, compatibility, and legality. As much benefit as a game company might get from modders, and as deserving of compensation as modders are for their labor, there’s always a danger that a mod may be awful, that it may break the game, or that it may use another company’s IP or that it may change the ESRB rating. And the more a company like Bethesda might try to legitimize mods, the more they end up endorsing them and potentially making those problems their own.

Above: Paradox has to walk a fine line thanks to the popularity of their A Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings 2

This is why I think companies have struggled to both make mods mainstream and to pay modders even when they know and appreciate the work modders do. The risks are too high. So the system that’s fallen into place is fans paying certain creators directly through tips or crowdfunding. That works in some cases, but crowdfunding is always scattershot and the companies who benefit from modders’ work still give nothing in return.

The only solution I can see for system that pays modders in general for their contribution to a game is a mechanism that insulates mods from the game developers and publishers. That is, whatever money from a company like Bethesda goes to a middleman or a system that acts as a filter. To take an extremely hypothetical example, Bethesda could take 1% of its Skyrim revenues and pay it to Steam or NexusMods, who might then divvy that up to every modder with over 1000 downloads.

An insulated system like that would have major obstacles to overcome, but has the advantage of maintaining the wild creativity of the modding scene while compensating modders for their work. Without something like that, we’re likely to only see the status quo maintained alongside extremely limited steps forward like Bethesda’s Creation Club. Whether that status quo is sustainable will be major question as mods grow increasingly prominent.

Modders Are Tweaking Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 In Clever Ways https://briefnews.eu/modders-are-tweaking-ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3-in-clever-ways/ https://briefnews.eu/modders-are-tweaking-ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3-in-clever-ways/#respond Mon, 24 Apr 2017 22:20:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/modders-are-tweaking-ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3-in-clever-ways/
If modders had their way, Maya would be way more powerful.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s recent release on PC has opened the floodgates for a varied collection of mods. Since the game arrived on Steam last December, fans have tweaked the frantic three-on-three title in a variety of ways, from simple gameplay adjustments to complete model swaps.

Owing to the quirky nature of its larger franchise, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a title rife with debatable mechanics. As time has passed from its initial release in 2011, competitive players have discovered infinite combos (inescapable strings that could potentially go on forever if a player’s execution is good enough). Some characters have proven to be too weak for high-level play.

A handful of community members are trying to change this by altering how the game plays. Others are trying to strengthen some of the game’s weaker characters.

The modders working to improve the game are doing subtle but significant work. One such player, tournament broadcaster Sixfortyfive, released a pair of videos last week demonstrating his work shifting gameplay in new directions. His first, for instance, attempts to make Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s Aerial Exchanges more like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom’s Crossover Air Raids.

These techniques are also known as Team Aerial Combos (or TACs), allowing players to switch characters during an air combo. However, where the version in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 uses no resources and maintains damage scaling (the damage deterioration that occurs as combos grow longer) when characters are exchanged, the latter uses one bar of super meter and resets damage scaling. Or, to put it in plainer English, the team aerial combos in Tatsunoko are more powerful than they are in Ultimate, which would naturally change the way the maneuver is used in the newer game.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s TACs are also the main culprit behind its infinite combos. By utilizing a few oddities in the engine, TAC infinites essentially trick the game into ignoring hitstun scaling (which, like damage scaling, builds as combos continue), making combos capable of continuing indefinitely.

Sixfortyfive’s method for eradicating these infinite combos is to make opponents enter a recovery state (meaning they can’t be attacked) when hit by a TAC move. Unfortunately, this removes the ability to combo afterwards, but as a proof-of-concept, it leaves room to expand on this inelegant idea.

His alternate, joking fix is to simply assume a player is able to pull of an extensive infinite, cutting out the lengthy wait time until a character dies by making TACs deal maximum damage.

And finally, he’s working to improve the character Felicia, who has been in terrible spot in the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 meta. Sixfortyfive put together a handful of changes that could help improve the Darkstalkers representative. Some of the adjustments include the improved ability to combo from a couple of her special moves and added maneuverability.

Expanding on this idea of “fixing” the game, a fighting game YouTuber by the name of e mc dropped a two-hour video last week compiling balance changes he’d like to see implemented in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. His demonstration shares ideas for weaker characters, including Hsien-Ko (did Capcom have something against Darkstalkers when making this game?), Iron Fist, She-Hulk, and Iron Man. For the most part, these adjustments improve the mechanics that make each cast member unique, like giving Thor an extra air dash to help him close the gap on an opponent and use his close-range attacks.

In order to show how these changes function in competitive matches, he also released another lengthy video of exhibitions matches he organized with another player named Killswitch.

Not every mod is a deeply technical dive into Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s intricate mechanics. Some fans are instead putting work into changing how the characters look, creating new costumes and appearances for the extensive cast.

One content creator in particular, a YouTuber known as Lythero, released a project earlier this month that lets a background character get her due. Using a tool developed by Super Smash Bros. for Wii U modder AnalogFlame, the videos in question shows how Phoenix Wright protagonist Maya would perform if given the moves of Resident Evil’s Wesker, Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry’s Dante, and even her mentor himself. The result is a couple of hilarious videos that shift Maya from the role of assistant to front-line fighter.

Whether their goals are to solve lingering issues or update the game’s aesthetics, these Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 mods are giving new life to a six-year-old game.

The modern fighting game community picks up and drops releases at a rapid pace thanks to the genre’s hectic release schedule, the above modifications harken back to the days of old, where players would grind and grind and grind their favorite titles because there was nothing else on the horizon. Sure, it’s entirely likely that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will replace Ultimate when it launches later this year, but for now, this PC release has given this community favorite its second wind.

Why is Studio Wildcard paying Ark modders $4,000 a month? GamesBeat Decides https://briefnews.eu/why-is-studio-wildcard-paying-ark-modders-4000-a-month-gamesbeat-decides/ https://briefnews.eu/why-is-studio-wildcard-paying-ark-modders-4000-a-month-gamesbeat-decides/#respond Tue, 28 Feb 2017 03:22:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-is-studio-wildcard-paying-ark-modders-4000-a-month-gamesbeat-decides/ Studio Wildcard is paying for mods.

How to listen:

Many consumers made it clear in 2015 that they don’t want to pay for mods on Steam for games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — even though many players very much want to continue using and enjoying that content. So to encourage more development in this space, Ark: Survival Evolved developer Studio Wildcard is going to start paying mods itself.

As part of its newly announced Ark Sponsored Mod program, Studio Wildcard will hand select certain mod creators that will receive $ 4,000 per month to continue working on that content. I spoke with Studio Wildcard cofounder and lead designer Jeremy Stieglitz and community manager Cedric Burkes about why the developer started this program, how it will choose who to support, and how it thinks about modding on this week’s GamesBeat Decides podcast.

“It’ll be 15 mods per month for now, but we may expand it if this is successful,” said Stieglitz. “It’ll be determined each month, so if a mod drops in quality or the author is no longer working on it — we have the option to stop including them. But our goal is to have a lot of consistency.”

Listen to the interview as part of the GamesBeat Decides podcast below:

The point of this program, however, is that mods are still free to Ark players. Creators are getting awarded for high-quality community add-ons for the game, but you won’t have to pay for it directly.

“This is just a back-channel method for us to help some of these really talented authors to spend more time making Ark,” said Stieglitz. “Part of the reason for doing this is mods have been a tremendous benefit to Ark. We have, on PC, over two-thirds play on servers that are running mods. Every player hosted server — almost 100 percent — are running a variety of player-created mods.”

Stieglitz explained that these mods have benefitted the players, the game, and the developer, and he implied that it was only fair that the best get some part of the reward for contributing to the success of Ark. When Valve and Bethesda tried to bring the option for creators to sell their mods for Skyrim on Steam directly to consumers a few years ago, the community lashed out at that concept. That led to Valve pulling the plug on the concept, and now Studio Wildcard is trying another way to reimburse community authors for their time — even if the Ark developer agrees in theory that consumers paying for mods is a sound idea.

“We were very close to trying to implementing [mod authors charging players] for Ark,” Stieglitz explained. “And I’m hugely for it. It gets at the root of the dilemma where there is no mid-way point in learning to make games. You’re either working for free or you’ve maxed out your credit cards and jumped into the deep end. It would be nice if there was some less-risky alternative. Paid mods really could provide that. The problem is that when we got into the details, the economics weren’t viable for Ark specifically. The reason is because you don’t play Ark by yourself. You join a server and play with a hundred other people. And those servers can often run five mods or up to 30, and at that point — we started asking, ‘does the server buy them or do the players buy them?’”

Either answer presented problems. If servers buy the mods, there’s only about 9,000 of them. That’s not a huge market. If players buy them, will they get locked out of certain servers because they don’t have the right mod?

“It might be right for some other game, but it doesn’t make sense for Ark,” said Stieglitz.

But Studio Wildcard thinks the solution it’s working up now could still help modders.

“This fits in the trend of the space between pro development and modders getting shorter,” said Stieglitz. “There’s not a lot of space there between a modder and someone who is working at a studio. The only difference a lot of the time is that one is being paid for their work and the other isn’t.”

Well, now, with Ark’s Sponsored Mod program, a few more may end up getting paid after all.

Ark: Survival Evolved Devs Offering $4,000 A Month To Some Modders https://briefnews.eu/ark-survival-evolved-devs-offering-4000-a-month-to-some-modders/ https://briefnews.eu/ark-survival-evolved-devs-offering-4000-a-month-to-some-modders/#respond Mon, 27 Feb 2017 23:31:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ark-survival-evolved-devs-offering-4000-a-month-to-some-modders/

Next week, Studio Wildcard will officially launch a new program for modders. Every month, 15 modders will receive a $ 4,000 stipend for their work.

Jeremy Stieglitz, Studio Wildcard’s lead designer, lead programmer and co-creative director on Ark: Survival Evolved, told PC Gamer that the program will select 15 modders and pay them a monthly stipend of $ 4,000. He said, “The hope is that with this kind of stipend, these authors, who really are hobbyists and have day jobs so they can’t really afford to spend as much time as they’d like on modding, that this will let them spend more time on modding, and ideally, hopefully, take some of these mods to completion.”

This isn’t the first time studios have attempted to find a way to compensate modders for their work. In 2015, Valve and Bethesda launched a paid mods program for Skyrim, where mods would be available for purchase. That program ended after less than a week, with Valve employee Aldon Kroll saying, “We thought this would result in better mods for everyone, both free & paid. … But we underestimated the differences between our previously successful revenue sharing models, and the addition of paid mods to Skyrim’s workshop. We understand our own game’s communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating.”

One of the problems cited during the brief window of time that Skyrim’s paid mods were available were that mods were available for sale that reused assets from other modders. This is a shitty thing to do when mods are free, but when money enters the equation it gets dicier. When asked about the potentiality for those kinds of headaches, Stieglitz said, “if there’s some dispute, technically it’s up to the modder to deal with that, at that point.”

Ark: Survival Evolved will receive an update next week after Studio Wildcard officially announces the program at GDC. This update will introduce a new menu with all 15 featured mods, allowing players to browse and download them. Check out the list of mods and the rest of the conversation with Jeremy Stieglitz over at PC Gamer.
