JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel’s attorney-general is considering indicting the wife of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Sara, on suspicion of using state funds for personal dining and catering services amounting to some $ 100,000, the justice ministry said on Friday.

The ministry statement said the attorney-general was considering prosecuting Sara Netanyahu for offences that include fraudulently procuring items, fraud and breach of trust.

A post on the prime minister’s Facebook page published late on Thursday in response to media reports about a forthcoming announcement by Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit, said the claims against Sara Netanyahu were “absurd and will be proven to be unfounded”.

Figures revealed by NHS Digital have revealed Blackpool had the highest rate at 3,540 admissions per 100,000 people.

The Isle of Wight had the lowest rate at 1,400 admissions per 100,000 people.

The measure looks at people who have been admitted to hospital as a result of alcohol related disease or injury.

A report by NHS Digital has revealed half of all admissions to hospital were for cardiovascular disease, while 18 per cent were for mental and behavioural disorders due to alcohol.

Cancer – partially attributable to drinking alcohol – was the second highest cause of admissions.

The figures revealed the number of admissions for alcohol consumption represents seven per cent of all hospital admission – which is similar to 2014/2014 and 2013/2014.

Just under two thirds of patients were male.

In 2015, there were 6,813 deaths which were related to the consumption of alcohol.

This is 1.4 per cent of all deaths.

The study said: “Alcohol misuse can be directly related to deaths from certain types of disease such as cirrhosis of the liver, and in some cases may be associated with other causes of death such as strokes.

“Alcoholic liver disease accounted for nearly two-thirds – 65 per cent – of all alcohol-related deaths.

“A further 23 per cent of deaths  were due to liver disease where a large proportion of cases will also be alcohol-related.”

While liver disease can be caused by conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and hepatitis, it can also be damaged by years of alcohol misuse – alcohol-related liver disease.

Symptoms of the condition feel sick, weight loss, loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes and skin, swelling in the ankles and tummy, confusion or drowsiness, vomiting blood or passing blood in stools.

The number of deaths is similar to 2014 but is an increase of ten per cent on 2005.

Salford dispensed the highest number of items – 1,534 items per 100,000, whereas Horsham and Mid Sussex dispensed the lowest number of items – 35 per 100,000.

The North of England dispensed 75,000 prescription items – 41 per cent of all items – however, London dispensed the lowest number of items – 14 thousand.

Drinking alcohol has been linked to seven different types of cancer – including cancer of the mouth and throat, liver, colon, bowel and breast.

A study of existing research has revealed evidence there is a direct, harmful impact on the body from drinking – despite the fact scientists remain unsure exactly why alcohol can cause cancer.

Writing in the journal Addiction, Jennie Connor, from the University of Otago in New Zealand, said alcohol is estimated to have caused about half a million deaths from cancer in 2012 alone – 5.8 per cent of cancer deaths worldwide.

The highest risks are from heavy drinking, but even people who drink at low levels are at risk.

The expert review linked alcohol to cancer of the mouth and throat, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, bowel and breast.

Dr John Larsen, Drinkaware Director of Evidence and Impact said: “While it is encouraging to see that young people aged between 16 and 24 years old are increasingly tending to drink less often or are becoming teetotal, there are some worrying figures in the survey. The Office for National Statistics data shows that 45 to 64 year olds are as likely to binge drink as those between the ages of 16 to 24.

“Most people wouldn’t think that sitting at home and having more than three pints or drinking most of a bottle of wine in front of the television is binging but the units add up.
 
“There are short and long term health risks associated with drinking at risky levels from interrupted sleep and weight gain to cancer, liver and heart disease. Small reductions in drinking alcohol can make a positive impact on your health. The Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines recommend that people do not regularly drink more than 14 units per week. If people do choose to drink that amount, they should do so evenly over three days or more.

The request, first revealed by Europe 1 radio on Friday, had actually been filed on March 29, sources of AFP and Reuters have confirmed. However, European MPs are unlikely to be able to approve the request before the first round of the French presidential election on April 23.

Le Pen is accused of fictitiously employing her staff as her assistants at the European Parliament while actually doing no EU work.

In early march, the National Front leader was summoned by judges over this misuse of EU funds. However, she refused to be questioned by police, citing immunity as a European lawmaker.

The move opened the way for another candidate, the anti-establishment far-leftist car factory worker, Philippe Poutou, to attack her during a TV debate.

“When we workers are summoned by the police, we go, we don’t have worker’s immunity,” Poutou said, with Le Pen struggling to come up with a reply.

Previously, the National Front leader was stripped of her EU parliamentary immunity in another case; this time involving her posting graphic photos of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) victims on Twitter back in December 2015.

The misuse of EU funds is just one of the legal woes currently experienced by Le Pen and her team with just over a week before the first round of the French presidential vote.

Separate investigations are now under way into the National Front’s finances in northern France relating to her chief of staff, the financing of Le Pen’s past campaigns, as well as the IS violence tweet.

Earlier this week, she also found herself in hot water after stating the French state had nothing to do with mass arrest of Jews in Paris during World War II.

Le Pen still going strong in the polls and is expected to come out first or second in the first round of the election. However, her three main rivals, centrist Emmanuel Macron, conservative Francois Fillon, and leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon have all increased their chances to make it to the runoff, possibly shutting out Le Pen.

On Friday, an IFOP-Fiducial poll suggested that the National Front leader will top the first round on 23 percent, with Macron claiming 22.5 percent and 19 percent going to Fillon and Melenchon each.

It’s the second time in less than a week that police have raided Le Pen’s offices in Nanterre, west of Paris. The National Front has slammed the accusations as politically motivated and unsubstantiated.

“For the second time, a raid took place at the same offices, over the same allegations, which confirms that the first raid amounted to nothing,” the National Front said in a statement, released in the aftermath of Monday’s raid.

The party denounced the move as a “media operation whose sole purpose is to try to disrupt the smooth running of the [Le Pen’s] presidential election campaign.” The statement also pointed out that the back-to-back searches came at the very moment Le Pen is making big strides in the polls. 

According to a recent poll by Opinionway, Le Pen is on course to seal a convincing victory in the first round of the presidential elections, and she is projected to win 27 percent of the votes cast. However, she is still poised to lose in the runoff in May, when she could face either centrist Emmanuel Macron or mainstream right-wing candidate François Fillon.

Monday’s operation coincided with Le Pen’s two-day trip to Lebanon, during which she for the first time since the beginning of her presidential campaign met with a foreign head of state, the country’s President Michel Aoun, and Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

Last Wednesday, French police paid a visit to the Nanterre headquarters, spurring a sharp reaction from the FN, which said that the raid was an attempt by the authorities to “hinder, spy on and intimidate the patriotic opposition.”

Both raids were conducted in line with the probe launched by the Paris Prosecutor’s Office on December 15. Among the charges Le Pen faces are “fraud,”“breach of trust,” an “attempt to commit fraud” and others. All the allegations are revolving around FN hiring 20 assistants for its European MPs who were allegedly working at the party’s Nanterre office instead of Brussels, Strasbourg or the MPs’ constituencies.

The investigation was initiated by the European Parliament in 2015 as then-President of the European Parliament Martin Schultz asked the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) to look into potential mishandling of funds by the FN.

“One cannot be paid by the European Parliament and work for a party,” he said at the time.   

As part of the probe, Le Pen herself is accused of hiring two assistants, Thierry Légier and Catherine Griset, who were engaged in the work not related to their perceived job as parliamentary aides.

An OLAF report released last week claimed that Thierry Legier had been wrongly paid some 41,554 euros ($ 44,000) from EU Parliament funds as an aide, while in effect he was working as Le Pen’s bodyguard.

“The inquiry has found that the MP drew up a fictional contract regarding one of her assistants,” the OLAF spokesman said last Thursday, commenting on the case. However, Le Pen brushed off the accusations, saying that there was “absolutely nothing false about it.”

As result of the earlier investigation into the probe, the European Parliament had already ordered Le Pen to reimburse 336,146 euros ($ 357,000) to the Parliament. However, as she keeps denying all the allegations, the money is going to be deducted from her salary as an MP.
