Firefighters arrived at the campus of RMIT in downtown Melbourne around 3 p.m. on Saturday after receiving a call about a suspected gas leak. As a precautionary measure, police evacuated approximately 500 students and teachers.

A journalist has received a torrent of abuse after being mistaken for his namesake, disgraced Australian cricket captain Steve Smith, who admitted cheating during a match in South Africa over the weekend.

Aussie cricketer Smith, 28, resigned as his country’s captain after admitting that ball tampering by batsman Cameron Bancroft during the test against South Africa – in which he illegally altered the ball’s condition to gain an advantage – had been orchestrated by himself.

Opening batsman Bancroft was captured by cameras using sticky yellow tape, sugar granules, and an unnamed ‘sharp object’ to alter the surface of the ball, which could have given his side a valuable advantage. Bancroft was filmed shoving the sticky tape down the front of his pants.

The ‘shame’ of the scandal has been labeled the “darkest day in Australian sport” by some journalists. Many have called for the whole of the Australian team’s ‘leadership circle’ to be fired.

However, one Australian man with the same name, ESPN writer Steve Smith, seemed to bear the brunt of the criticism. Smith tweeted that he had woken up on Saturday morning, inundated with vitriol he had received after Twitter users confused his verified account with that of the cricket captain.

One furious tweeter posted: “I don’t care how good a batsman you are. Given the privilege to represent Australia and deliberately cheating with the ball is no better than taking performance-enhancing drugs. #CricketAustralia should NEVER allow you on a cricket pitch EVER AGAIN you absolute SCUMBAG.”

Another wrote: “Morning, you cheat. Ball tampering on the agenda today? You need to resign. The Australian captain needs to be better than this.” To which Smith dryly replied: “Totally agree.”

Smith then shared screenshots of other messages of abuse, ranging from labeling him a “disgrace,” to asking what he had done to an “otherwise golden career.” One account astoundingly called Smith’s reaction to the abuse “white privilege.”

The cricket captain Steve Smith received an immediate punishment of a one-test ban, 100 percent match-fee fine, as well as resigning as Australia captain after admitting he and the team’s ‘leadership circle’ knew about Bancroft’s tampering.

On Monday, Smith also stepped down as captain of Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals. He and Vice-Captain David Warner are both facing life bans if the maximum penalty is applied under Cricket Australia’s code of behavior.

Bancroft was fined 75 percent of his match fee, and handed three demerit points for breaching Level 2 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Stomach cancer is a tumour which forms when cells in your stomach grow in an abnormal and uncontrolled way. 

The exact cause is still unclear, but various health bodies say you’re more likely to develop it if you are male, are of 55 years of age or older, smoke, have a diet low in fibre and high in processed food or red meat, or have a diet that contains a lot of salted and pickled foods. 

If you don’t get treatment for stomach cancer, it can spread to other parts of your body or organs, such as your liver. 

But there are nine early signs of this type of cancer you can look out for, according to the NHS.  

The early stage symptoms, according to the health organisation, include: 

  • Persistent indigestion 
  • Trapped wind and frequent burping 
  • Heartburn 
  • Feeling full very quickly when eating 
  • Feeling bloated after eating 
  • Feeling sick 
  • Pain in your stomach or breastbone 
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Vomiting (the vomit may be streaked with blood), although this is uncommon in the early stages) 

When stomach cancer becomes more advanced, different symptoms may start to show. These include: 

  • Blood in your stools, or black stools 
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss 
  • Tiredness 
  • Lumpiness and swelling in your stomach (caused by a build-up of fluid) 
  • Anaemia (a reduced number of red blood cells that can cause you to feel tired and breathless) 
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)

Stomach cancer is usually easier to treat if it’s diagnosed early. 

The NHS advises: “Stomach cancer is much more common in older people, with 90 out of 100 cases occurring in people who are over 55 years of age.

“Indigestion is a very common symptom in the general population. However, it’s unlikely that someone with indigestion who’s under the age of 55 will have stomach cancer.

“However, see your GP if you have indigestion and weight loss, anaemia or persistent vomiting. They should refer you to a specialist for further testing.

“Also see your GP if you have difficulty swallowing. This isn’t a common symptom among the general population and the cause should always be investigated.”

Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the UK. You should see a doctor if you have this one tell-tale symptom.

Unknown to many Game of Thrones fans, George R R Martin is not the first author to give one of his works such a title.

The Winds of Winter was also a romantic novel by Sandra Field, released way back in 1980 – and still prompting discussion on the internet today. It’s currently listed on Amazon as published by Mills and Boon.

It has been causing a little confusion for Martin’s followers – a comment on GoodReads says: “i thought this was george RR martin’s and i freaked out, f**kers is jon snow alive? [sic]”. Another customer on Amazon suspiciously said this was “not the actual book I was looking for”.

Fanzine Winter Is Coming even jovially shared the cover on Twitter two years ago, quipping: “Because of all the Winds of Winter talk, we feel compelled to point out that it already came out in 1980.”

But outside of the Game of Thrones shadow, Field’s The Winds of Winter is an enduringly popular read, according to online reviews.

It’s about a woman named Anne, a young nurse who became estranged from her husband after enduring a stillbirth.

While some on GoodReads have blasted the “pathetic doormat” central character, others have said that with the time period taken into consideration, it’s a gripping tale.

“I was not disappointed, in that this book certainly packed a punch!” said one satisfied customer.

Another hailed the “Angsty goodness”, while a third said: “I LOVE this book, and it surprises me with every new read.”

In fact, it holds a 3.65-star rating on the site, although one joker has posted a review as if it were a Song of Ice and Fire entry.

So perhaps before Martin’s next instalment eclipses it even more – whenever it may be released – Field’s publication might be worth a read as well.

In an effort to get Muslim men to grow out their facial hair, a Muslim preacher has claimed that clean-shaven men with long hair “cannot be distinguished from women,” which can cause “indecent thoughts” to occur between males.

“Men should grow beards. One of the two body parts that separate men from women is the beard,” Turkish preacher Murat Bayaral told religious station Fatih Medreseleri TV on Saturday, as quoted by Hurriyet. He went on to describe a possible scenario in which a man could find himself having “indecent thoughts” about another man. 

“For example, if you see a man with long hair from afar you may think he is a woman if he does not have a beard. Because nowadays women and men dress similarly. God forbid! You could be possessed by indecent thoughts,” he said, apparently referring to same-sex relationships.

While homosexuality has long been legalized in Turkey and is not officially persecuted, unlike in many other Muslim-majority states, conservative Islamic preachers consider all same-sex relations to be forbidden. The Turkish LGBT community has also been fighting for the introduction of anti-discrimination laws, as well as for the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Conservative sentiment on same-sex relations is said to be dominant in Turkish society, with some elected officials openly opposing them. Former Minister of Women and Family Affairs, Selma Aliye Kavaf, once said she believes “homosexuality is a biological disorder and this disease needs treatment.”

Meanwhile, beards, which are common among Muslim men, have also been facing some level of discrimination in the West. Last month, a Danish right-wing party argued that doctors with full beards shouldn’t be allowed to practice in the country’s hospitals. Last year, a student in a French high school was threatened with expulsion after refusing to comply with the headmaster’s demand to shave his beard. The school authority called excessive facial hair a “sign of radicalization.”

An Atlanta police officer was placed on leave after he was accused of running over a man he wrongly thought was a suspect.

Warren Hill said he was run over in the parking lot of a mall last week. “It hurt bad,” he told WSBTV. “My head, my neck, my back, my whole body. You get hit by a car, what do you think is going to happen?”

Hill said he ran away from the approaching police because he was “scared of the cops.”

“They thought I was the suspect and ran me down like a dog or an animal,” he said.

Hill said after the police realized they had mistaken him for a domestic violence suspect, they arrested him for an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court for a broken taillight.

The Atlanta Police Department told WSBTV the officer is now on leave and that its report or further details on the incident are not yet available.
