  • Florida Gov. Desantis flew 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard. 
  • The migrants told NPR that they were under the impression they were going to Boston for work. 
  • Advocates have compared the tactic to the 1960s "Reverse Freedom Rides.

The tactics used by Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis to relocate 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard last week resemble tactics used by southern segregationists during the 1960s "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported. 

In a tweet, Representatives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library also recounted the 1960s segregationalist effort. 

"To embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people, southern White Citizens' Councils started their so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides," giving Black people one-way tickets to northern cities with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives," the library said. 

On Wednesday, 50 migrants arrived in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts without any warning. DeSantis claimed responsibility for the two flights. The migrants were flown from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of an effort by Republican governors to protest the Biden administration's immigration policies. 

DeSantis was following in the footsteps of several other GOP governors who in recent weeks have been sending migrants to liberal cities. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has bused about 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City, in protest of  Biden's immigration policies. 

NPR reported that the migrants thought they were headed to Boston for jobs. Three migrants told the outlets that a woman identified as "Perla" promised them expedited work permits in Boston.

"She (Perla) offered us help. Help that never arrived," one migrant, named by the outlet as Andres, told NPR. "Now we are here. We got on the plane with a vision of the future, of making it."

 

 

In 1962, the segregationist group called the White Citizens' Council falsely promised hundreds of Black Americans housing and jobs before sending them to cities like New York and Philadelphia in an effort called the "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported.

"Reverse Freedom Rides are not well known among many people, and it's important to understand that this tactic of using people as political pawns was used 60 years ago by segregationists and White supremacists," Tanisha Sullivan, president of the NAACP Boston branch told CNN. 

"It's important for us to amplify and highlight that parallel, so people can see that this type of racist behavior and these racist tactics are still being used today," she added.

Black Mirror has evolved over the years after first debuting back in 2011 on Channel 4. Created by acerbic broadcaster and columnist Charlie Brooker, the anthology series served up modern parables playing on technological paranoia. Here’s a breakdown of Black Mirror 15 Million Merits and its meaning.

What happened in Black Mirror 15 Million Merits?

15 Million Merits was co-written by Brooker and his wife and former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq credited as Kanak Huq.

Audiences were plunged into a world where people earned credits or merits by riding on stationary bikes.

The merits were a substitute for currency and allowed people to purchase items such as toothpaste or food.

As part of this world, people lived in pods made up of screens and were forced to watch adverts transmitted on them.

This society also condemned those deemed overweight with these individuals confined to more menial roles such as cleaners. Many ended up on humiliating reality programmes such as Fattax and Botherguts.

15 Million Merits followed Bingham “Bing” Madsen (played by Daniel Kaluuya), who was content with cycling all day long and earning currency.

However, things changed for Bing when he met newcomer Abi Khan (Jessica Brown Findlay) who he took a shine to.

After hearing Abi singing in the toilets, he encouraged her to audition for Hot Shot, a reality series which could turn her into a star and perhaps allow her to leave behind a life of drudgery.

He even transferred his merits to her so she would have enough needed to pay the audition fee. Abi sang Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand) by Irma Thomas – a recurring track in Black Mirror.

However, the audition didn’t go to plan with the judges telling her they’d already seen her level of talent and wanted something else.

Abi ended up becoming an adult star on the pornographic channel WraithBabes.

After seeing Abi becoming a WraithBabe and featuring in an ad for the programme, Bing was enraged she was pressurised by the Hot Shot judges.

He smashed the screens in his pod and hid a shard of glass in his pillow. Bing then worked away day and night to build up his merits to appear on Hot Shot.

When he finally made it onto the programme, he threatened to kill himself live on air as he launched into a diatribe about how the show destroyed anything pure and good.

Ironically, Bing’s plan backfired with the judges loving his performance and giving him his own show and bigger living quarters with a much bigger screen than the one he had before.

Speaking about the episode, Brooker told Radio Times: “The idea came about when my wife was watching me dumbly patting at an iPad while simultaneously checking Twitter on a phone, and remarked that I’d only be truly happy if every wall in the house functioned as some form of touchscreen.

“This led to a conversation about inflight entertainment: about how the addition of a small screen spooling films into your face makes the discomfort of a long-haul flight more bearable.

“How much discomfort could you bear while being entertained? Taking that as a starting point, we sketched out an idea for a world in which permanent distraction was king, a world that steadily became more and more sinister the more details we added.”

Brooker added: “Incidentally, although the contest at the heart at the story may look familiar, the episode is not a “satire on talent shows”.

“It’s more about the tainted surrounding air Bing and Abi have no choice but to breathe: it’s about wanting something better than you currently have.”

The all new Lord of the Rings series follows the global success of the JRR Tolkien books and Hollywood films and fans are eager for the new series to be released.

Two years ago Amazon announced it had won the rights to produce the series and fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the cast ever since.

It seems a full lineup will be released soon as the latest cast member was announced and according to Variety he is set to take a lead role.

However, it is unclear who exactly he will play as this is all being kept under wraps for now.

One of the star’s most recent roles is hotshot video game designer Colin Ritman in Black Mirror’s film adaptation Bandersnatch.

The star is best known for his film appearances such as in The Revenant and Detroit.

However, the show won’t be his first TV series as he stared in comedy series School of Comedy and Comedy Lab in his early career.

Amazon are yet to comment on the announcement but there has also been news Australian actress Markella Kavenagh was in talks for a role in the series as well.

While everything is strictly under wraps regarding the cast as of now, it has been reported by Variety that she would be playing a character named Tyra.

The series is being developed by JD Payne and Patrick McKay and Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman has taken a role as a consultant for the project.

J.A Bayona is set to direct a number of episodes in the new series, but little is known about what the series will entail.

For now fans know the series plot will explore new storylines prior to The Fellowship of the Ring.

Moreover, Amazon has revealed the time frame, and the series is set to take place in The Second age.

The official release date it yet to be announced and the first details surrounding the series emerged two years after Amazon won rights to produce the series.

The series is an Amazon Prime original so won’t appear on Netflix, Sky or Hulu.

Despite Amazon remaining largely tight-lipped on the series, several maps of the middle Earth were released online via Twitter earlier this year.

These maps showed a number of different fictional locations where the Lord of the Rings TV series will take place, including Númenor.

Moreover, The show’s official Twitter account recently sent out an image of a map along with the two messages: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie,”

The second read: “Welcome to the Second Age.” In the Tolkien mythology, the Second Age was the time in which the Rings of Power, including Sauron’s One Ring, came into existence.

Lord of the Rings TV series will be released on Amazon Prime in the future.

Rumors of an experimental “choose your own adventure” feature on Netflix may have finally found their target film: a one-off Black Mirror “event,” dubbed Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

Netflix announced Bandersnatch with a surprise trailer drop on Thursday, one day before the film’s world premiere tomorrow. With that came confirmation on the film’s listing page of “multiple endings” as a primary feature. This could play out like in other classic films (Clue, LOTR: Return of the King), in which a series of endings happens in order, or we could finally see the video-streaming service roll out a new feature that lets viewers use their remote controls to decide how the film ends.

Netflix on Thursday unveiled a trailer for Bandersnatch, a standalone Black Mirror movie that is set to be released this Friday, Dec. 28.

As previously reported, Bandersnatch is expected to function as an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure-style film — and the above trailer hints at such (“Change your mind… Change your life… Change your past… Your present… Your future”). The cast includes Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), Will Poulter (The Maze Runner) and Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing).

Netflix has also released a synopsis for Bandersnatch, which reads as follows:

“In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge. Welcome back.”

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch reportedly hails from director David Slade, who helmed the Season 4 installment “Metalhead.” A reference to the episode is included in the trailer (at the 0:15 mark).

Black Mirror is coming off four 2018 Emmy wins for the Season 4 standout “USS Callister,” including Outstanding TV Movie, Sound Editing (Limited Series), Writing (Limited Series) and Single-Camera Picture Editing (Limited Series). The show also garnered four additional nominations, including acting nods for “USS Callister” star Jesse Plemons and “Black Museum” actress Letitia Wright.

Contrary to speculation, the release of Black Mirror Season 5 will not coincide with the premiere of Bandersnatch. A Netflix insider tells TVLine that the anthology series’ next batch of episodes will arrive at a later date.

So all those twists and turns Star Trek: Discovery threw at us last week? Just a warm-up, it seems, for this week’s galactically huge shocker.

We’re still in the mirror universe, and Burnham is still recovering from seeing her beloved Georgiou alive and well — albeit as a ruthless emperor. The Defiant data she got back to Saru reveals that there is a portal between this universe and theirs… but its exact coordinates are a mystery. So Burnham continues playing along, hauling Lorca away to Emperor Georgiou’s massive palace ship and handing him over for punishment. Georgiou is grateful, congratulating Burnham and inviting her to dinner: “There is so much to discuss. Everything will be the way it was, dear daughter.” (Ah, so she and Burnham are tight here, too? Some things never change… no matter what universe you’re in.)
