eBay seller serasweetie has listed the Guy Fawkes £2 coin at auction, with a starting bid of an eye-watering £399.

The seller has 100 per cent positive feedback from 570 feedback ratings.

Writing about the coin on the listing, the seller wrote: “Very rare £2 coin with minting error on ‘NOVEMBER’ mint has issued NOVEMBEP (P rather than the R at end).

“Coin has been circulated, but is in very good condition.”

Royal Mint released the design in 2005 to celebrate the 400 year anniversary of the plot to assassinate James I being discovered.

Describing the design, they wrote: “The plot to assassinate James I at the opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605 is a piece of British history that shall ‘never be forgot’.

“400 years later, in 2005, The Royal Mint remembered the Fifth of November with a £2 coin.

“The design features an arrangement of crosiers, maces and swords surrounded by stars, the dates 1605 and 2005, and features the denomination ‘Two Pounds’ below.

“In the words of the artist Peter Forster, its intricate reverse design shows symbols of State that allude to the survival of the British establishment under threat.

“The circular arrangement in which they are shown is suggestive of a Catherine Wheel and the surrounding stars are a further reference to fireworks. The dates are rendered in an early seventeenth-century style font.”

5,140,500 of the coins were minted, giving these coins a scarcity index of 5 – common, according to ChangeChecker.org.

However, as this coin has a minting error, it is likely to be much rarer.

The Guy Fawkes coin is not the only one selling for a high price on eBay, with a Charles Dickens coin listed for £400 just yesterday.

The seller, johsco_55, has a 100 per cent positive feedback rating on the site.

It is listed under the title: “Charles Dickens 2012 £2 Two pound coin Very rare Royal Mint error.”

The description explains that the coin has “minting errors” which makes it more rare.

It reads: “Rare dicken’s £2 coin with minting errors. Writing around edge “something will turn up” is upside-down.”

“The dots on the head side are missing around nearly half the coin, on the left side of the queens head. This is a circulated coin so there are signs of wear.

Facts about British currency

Monarch direction

When a new monarch ascends to the throne and their profile is put on to currency, the side they face is swapped.

This means Charles will face left on British currency when he becomes King, as currently the Queen faces right.

Huge notes

The £50 not is the highest-value banknote in general circulation, but there are a small number of “giant” and “titan” notes – £1million and £100million notes respectively.

These are not designed for general use, but were instead created to back the value of everyday notes issued by commercial banks in Scotland Northern Ireland.

According to the BBC: “For every pound an authorised Scottish or Northern Irish bank wants to print in the form of its own notes, it has to deposit the equivalent amount in sterling with the Bank of England.”

eBay: ‘Rare’ £1 coin with minting defects selling for £500 – YOUR coin could have them too https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-1-coin-with-minting-defects-selling-for-500-your-coin-could-have-them-too/ https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-1-coin-with-minting-defects-selling-for-500-your-coin-could-have-them-too/#respond Thu, 12 Jul 2018 14:38:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-1-coin-with-minting-defects-selling-for-500-your-coin-could-have-them-too/

eBay is the world’s biggest online auction site, attracting thousands and thousands of buyers and sellers.

Amongst those are keen coin collectors, who are willing to splash out for seemingly small change.

One coin hoping to attract one of these collectors is a “rare” £1 coin with a significant minting error.

The coin was listed this afternoon by eBay user “robimora-1”, who is based in Wadebridge.

The seller also boats 100 per cent positive feedback, enhancing the reliability of the listing.

Robimora-1 listed the coin as a “Rare deformed pound coin offset print”.

Not elaborating much more in the description, the seller added: “Rare miss print New £1 coin” (sic).

The coin is a 2016 £1 coin, and appears to have a skew print and unusual marks on the outer rim.

Listed for a whopping £500, the seller is also open to having lower offers made on the coin.

The 12-sided £1 coin was minted in 2016, and designed to combat fraud due to two different coloured metals and a hologram underneath the Queen’s effigy.

According the the Royal Mint, many of the old one-colour £1 coins are fake.

The new £1 coin was designed by David Pearce, and features rose, leek, thistle and shamrock encircled by a coronet.

Half a billion of the new £1 coins were minted in 2016, with production rates increased.

The faster rate of production and amount of coins being minted led to mistakes being made in minting.

Many coins were misprinted or featured minting defects, often selling for sky-high prices on eBay.

Earlier this month another rare £1 coin with a minting error was sold for £200 on eBay.

The coin was listed as a “£1 very rare 2017 circulated £1 one pound coin mint error missprint miss strike” [sic].

The description simple read: “Very rare 2017 error £1. Leaked egg.”

A newly minted 2017 £1, the coin had the centre silver circle leaking into the outer gold rim.

The silver had leaked out from its perimeters, causing some of the outer engraving to be printed in silver.

eBay: 50p sold for £414 – rare minting error coin has sold for a whopping sum https://briefnews.eu/ebay-50p-sold-for-414-rare-minting-error-coin-has-sold-for-a-whopping-sum/ https://briefnews.eu/ebay-50p-sold-for-414-rare-minting-error-coin-has-sold-for-a-whopping-sum/#respond Sat, 24 Feb 2018 13:52:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ebay-50p-sold-for-414-rare-minting-error-coin-has-sold-for-a-whopping-sum/

A rare 50p coin has sold on eBay for a whopping sum of money on February 17.

The coin, which has a misprint, is dated from the 1980s. Minting errors such as this happen when there is a mistake during the printing process.

This error is known as a misstrike, when the coin is not stamped in the correct place.

Seller of the item Litebites said of the coin: “Spectacular and rare example of a genuine mis struck misprinted 50 pence coin from 1980.”

They added: “Relative worked in a bank and this coin was found in a bag of uncirculated 50p pieces at that time.”

The seller added they have gone to lengths to validate the coin, although did not mention how it was validated.

They said: “We have not had it validated by Royal Mint purely because we want a quick sale but prospective buyers can be 100% assured of authenticity.

“We have been advised by coin experts that it is obviously genuine and that collectors can buy with confidence.”

Twenty bids were made by eight bidders over the duration of the week on the coin, which was listed with a starting price of £200.

Rare coins can sell for huge amounts on line.

The most expensive coin ever was sold at auction for £7,171,581. It was the Flowing Hair Dollar.

The most expensive UK coin ever to be sold is the Edward III Florin, which was sold for £486,846.

Another rare coin that has sold for a large sum recently is the Team GB swimming 50p coin.

This coin is the Team GB 50p coin, which was released ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics.

It was designed by Tim Sharp and has the image of a swimmer with the Team GB logo about it.

However, this coin is not particularly rare. It is has a mintage of 6,400,000.

eBay: Rare £2 coin selling for £7000 thanks to unusual minting error – can YOU see it? https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-2-coin-selling-for-7000-thanks-to-unusual-minting-error-can-you-see-it/ https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-2-coin-selling-for-7000-thanks-to-unusual-minting-error-can-you-see-it/#respond Fri, 05 Jan 2018 14:14:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-2-coin-selling-for-7000-thanks-to-unusual-minting-error-can-you-see-it/

Selling coins on eBay is one way to make a pretty penny, and some coins can sell for thousands.

A £2 coin with a rare minting error has been listed by seller ‘charlotte6923’, who is hoping to make £7000 for her discovery.

She is offering the coin on a Buy it now basis for £7000 or an auction starting at £5000.

Currently one person is watching the listing, which ends in three days.

Writing about the £2, the seller said: “High Scarcity Index, very rare ‘The Mary Rose’ £2 Coin. UK 2011.

“Minting error: Edge inscription upside down. Can’t be read when Queens head is facing up.

“Excellent condition. Payment through PayPal only. Will be sent First Class Recorded Delivery.”

Explaining how upside down edge lettering happens, change checker.org said: “Depending on the denomination, some coins will have edge lettering to help against counterfeiting.

“What you may not know though, is the edge lettering is applied before the coin has even been struck which is why some coins can end up with the edge lettering upside down.”

Two pound coins are not often the subject of collector frenzy – but another design was recently selling for over £100.

The two pound is one of just 485,500 of its kind produced in 2002 by the Royal Mint.

It was made to commemorate the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which were held in the city of Manchester.

Four different versions of the coin were made, each representing a different team in the games.

However, the rarest of these four coins is the Northern Ireland design by Matthew Bonaccorsi.

It is listed by the seller as “2002 Two Pound £2 Coin Northern Ireland XVII Commonwealth Games BU Sealed”.

It features a long haired man, with an athletic looking body, who is running and appears to be waving a long banner.

eBay: Rare £2 coin with minting error selling for a fortune – can YOU spot the mistakes? https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-2-coin-with-minting-error-selling-for-a-fortune-can-you-spot-the-mistakes/ https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-2-coin-with-minting-error-selling-for-a-fortune-can-you-spot-the-mistakes/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 15:53:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-2-coin-with-minting-error-selling-for-a-fortune-can-you-spot-the-mistakes/

A £2 coin with two minting errors is selling on eBay for the princely sum of £175.

The seller, kaseon1967, has listed the coin on a Buy it now basis.

Describing the coin, the seller wrote: “St . Paul’s cathedral in London during the blitz , with headlights shining into the sky .

“Issued in 2005 to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the world war 2.

“Two main errors on this coin circulated coin in good condition.

“The writing on the edge is upside down to the Queens head.

“The dots around the Queens head only go round some of the way a load missing around the bottom.”

Three people an hour are looking at the listing, making it a popular option.

The St Paul’s Cathedral £2 coin depicts the London landmark illuminated by searchlights and the value ‘Two Pounds’ above and the dates ‘1945-2005’ below.

Describing the design, designer Robert Etlderton said: “Its survival during the firebombing of London seemed such an iconic image.

“The coin more or less designed itself when I came across the image of St Paul’s lit up with the search beams in the shape of a V for Victory. A lot of credit should go to Sir Christopher Wren and the searchlight operators!”

This is not the only coin selling for a fortune online thanks to a minting error. Another eBay seller is hoping to cash in thanks to a rare £1 coin.

The coin is being sold by ‘smurfpt’ who is selling on a Buy it now basis for £10,000.

Describing the coin, the seller wrote on the listing: “The Queen has a full surround of extra or miss-strike ,(usually only a small amount or none).

“Please zoom and study pics as this is different, open to serious collector  offers. Nice circulated coin.”

The error on the coin is visible in the photos. The Queen’s silhouette has been struck inaccurately, and comes out of the circle onto the gold outline.

eBay: Rare 50p coin with unusual minting error selling for £3500 – could YOU have one? https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-50p-coin-with-unusual-minting-error-selling-for-3500-could-you-have-one/ https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-50p-coin-with-unusual-minting-error-selling-for-3500-could-you-have-one/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 19:09:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-50p-coin-with-unusual-minting-error-selling-for-3500-could-you-have-one/

Listen on eBay by seller ‘lukvalentin4’, the coin is a Kew Gardens 50p.

Only 210,000 of these were issued in 2009, all featuring the iconic Kew Gardens Pagoda.

Usually, more than five million 50p coins are struck in a new design, so the Kew one is very rare.

That is not the only thing that has pushed up the value of this particular coin being sold at auction.

It also features a minting error. The seller explained: “Out of the 210,000 circulated Kew Gardens 50p coins how many have minting errors?

“This coin is missing the boarder on the face side under the words ‘fifty pence’ and has two weak printed boarders on the reverse side above the tower.

“Don’t miss this opportunity to own not only one of the rarest circulated coins in the UK but also a rare of the rarest coin with minting errors.”

Eagle eyed coin fans can see the error in the pictures shared on eBay by the seller.

Minting errors often mean a coin can be worth a fortune, and a rare new £1 coin featuring a mistake is selling for £6900 on eBay.

Writing about the coin, the seller ‘take-a-peek’ said: “*RARE* 2016 Dated – 2017 New Shape 12 Sided £1 One Pound Coin Hunt Rare Uncirculated.

“This 2016 coin is rare and very collectable as these were the first produced and we are already into 2017, already twice as many 2017 have been produced.

“UNCIRCULATED ERROR COINS ARE WORTH THOUSANDS OF POUNDS AND WITH THIS BEING AN ISSUE ERROR COIN I HAVE LISTED, IT WILL BE WORTH MUCH, MUCH MORE IN THE YEARS TO COME!

“This coin is a rarity, that COLLECTORS and INVESTORS would have a keen interest in.”

There are six people watching the coin and one new viewer an hour on the listing.

Royal Mint confirmed the minting error earlier this year and removed them from circulation, but they have missed some.

This means anyone who spots one in their change could be in for a windfall.

The £1 coin with a rare minting error is not the only British currency to catch the attention of collectors recently.

An unusual 50p is selling on eBay for a whopping £1,000,000.

The Offside Rule coin is being offered for sale by ‘gigbevgig’, and it is certainly popular, with two views an hour on the listing.

Writing about the coin, the seller said: “Rare Off Side Rules 50p Coin. Used.”

The coin explains the offside rule with a simple drawing and was designed by Neil Wolfson.

Released in 2012 to honour the London Olympic Games, there was some controversy at the time over whether the coin accurately explained the rule.

Explaining his thinking behind the design, Neil said: “The coin simply states that the player is ‘offside’ – which is true, irrespective of whether or not an ‘offside offence’ results from this scenario.

“Furthermore, there are clearly space limitations on the coinface so it was obviously impossible to go into the finer details of the offside rule.”

Rare £2 coin: Guy Fawkes coins with ‘minting error’ could be worth HUNDREDS on eBay https://briefnews.eu/rare-2-coin-guy-fawkes-coins-with-minting-error-could-be-worth-hundreds-on-ebay/ https://briefnews.eu/rare-2-coin-guy-fawkes-coins-with-minting-error-could-be-worth-hundreds-on-ebay/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2017 21:07:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rare-2-coin-guy-fawkes-coins-with-minting-error-could-be-worth-hundreds-on-ebay/

A rare 2005 Gunpowder Plot £2 is sought after because of what appears to be mistake on the coin.

The collector’s coin seems to have a spelling error around the outside, although Royal Mint claims this is not actually a printing mistake.

One of these coins is currently for sale on eBay for £500.

The seller said of the piece: “Very collectable coin, very rare with minting error.”

The coin is supposed to read around the rim of the coin the popular rhyme: “Remember remember the fifth of November.”

However, this one has an error on the side.

The seller said: “This one has a striking error and has missed the last strike off the R in NOVEMBER so it looks like a P.”

So what causes the mistake if this is not a printing error?

The Royal Mail told the Sun: “It’s likely to be a consequence of the production process.

”It’s very, very infrequent that we issue coins with an error. We have quality control to detect any defects.”

Regardless of the fact that the spelling mistake may not really be a printing error it still seems to have boosted the value of the coin.

The coin features on one face a design with a mace, crosier and sword – all symbols of the state – meant to represent the survival of British government.

Stars sit in the gold rim around the silver centre, and the dates 1605 and 2005 are printed onto the coin.

The gunpowder plot was the attempt to King James I at the opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605.

The seller added: “Coin has genuinely not been tampered with while in my possession.”

A Beatrix Potter rare coin is selling for £4,050.

The coin is the 2017 Tom Kitten Silver Proof 50p coin and it also comes with a certificate of authenticity.

eBay: Rare new one pound coin with minting error selling EYE-WATERING amount https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-new-one-pound-coin-with-minting-error-selling-eye-watering-amount/ https://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-new-one-pound-coin-with-minting-error-selling-eye-watering-amount/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 10:33:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ebay-rare-new-one-pound-coin-with-minting-error-selling-eye-watering-amount/

A new £1 coin with a minting error described as “very rare” by the seller has been listed on eBay.

With a week left to go on the listing, there are 12 people watching it and an average of one view an hour.

The seller has shared four images of the coin which show exactly what is unusual about it.

The silver middle has not been set properly, and there are holes where the outer ring does not meet the middle.

The middle is also not properly centred in the new one pound coin.

Listed for £5000, the seller does not provide any information, informing interested parties to “contact me for further details”.

The seller, mojibjalalimojib, has a 100 per cent positive feedback rating.

Pound coins old and new are a popular item to sell on eBay, particularly if they feature an unusual design.

A recent listing of a one pound coin with a London design saw the money up for sale at £1.5million.

The reason this item is potentially worth so much money is thanks to it being part of a special collection.

Royal Mint released the ‘City Series’ of coins in 2010, with one for each of the capital cities of Great Britain.

Royal Mint said of the coin: “2010 saw the launch of an entirely new £1 coin series which focused on the four capital cities of the UK – the ‘City Series’.

“It was the first time in a ‘home countries’ £1 coin series that two coins were released in the same year.”

In 2010 the London and Belfast coins were released, and in 2011 the Cadriff and Edinburgh versions were released.

Speaking about the London coin, Royal Mint said: “The motto of the arms, DOMINE DIRIGE NOS – translated as ‘Lord, deliver us’ – features as the edge inscription for the London £1 coin.”

Describing the item, the seller said: “London pound coin for sale, rare, reasonable offers will be considered.”

The £2 coin is described by the seller as a Charles Dickens 2012 edition on their eBay post.

Its rarity comes from an unusual minting error on the side.

The seller explains: “Very rare Charles Dickens 2012 two pound coin with two ii in will on the edge it reads wiil when it should say will” (sic).

There are currently four people watching this item, which is available on a ‘buy it now’ basis.

The seller, ‘leo19425’ has been a member of eBay since 2008, and has 100 per cent positive feedback.

The coin is currently the only thing the seller has available to buy.

Rare two pound coins are not the only type selling for a fortune on eBay.

A Battle of Hastings 50p was recently selling for £1.8million on the site.

SamsWirley1 has been a member of the digital marketplace auction site for seven years, but it looks like their luck has finally come in.

The Battle of Hastings 50p coin is for sale at £1,800,000 and currently has six watchers.

However, the scarcity index on ChangeChecker.org has revealed the coin might not be as rare as the user thinks.

Change Checker ‘Scarcity Index’ revealed the coin was ‘common’ with 6.7m in circulation across the UK.

Notes can also sell for high prices on eBay. A rare £5 note was recently listed for £500,000.

The £5 Bank of England new notes have the serial code “AK47-04-04-76”.

One eBay one seller has listed a new £5 note with the rare serial number “AK47” for half a million pounds.

Notes with this serial number sold for a high amount, as it is also the name of a popular semi-automatic rifle.
