A rare one pound coin has sold in eBay for £129.99 – but why has someone snapped up the coin for this huge sum? The piece, sold by Dan Rahman from Southampton on Saturday 21 March, has an unusual design that man Britons might not recognise. This is due to the fact that the coin is not from the mainland of the UK. The pound coin is an Isle of Man coin and is not created by Royal Mint. A gold piece with a crest on it, the coin was created to mark the Douglas Centenary. Douglas is the largest city in the Isle of Man and the capital city. It has a population of only 27,938 and was home to Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb and Robin Gibbs, brothers and co-founders of the group Bee Gees. Seller Dan Rahman, known as “d_b90210” on the site, said: “This listing is for an Isle of Man £1 coin dated 1996 featuring Douglas. The coin is uncirculated but does have some surface markings as pictured so please check them. This coin is also the hardest to find from the set.” Isle of Man coins, known as Manx coins, are made by the Tower Mint. However, prior to 1 April 2017 they were made by the Pobjoy Mint. The region has its own coins, banknotes and postage stamps. The Isle of Man was the first region to produce a pearl-black coin which won the 1990 Coin of the Year Awards. It is possible to buy Manx coins from the Isle of Man Post Office. Coins from the Isle of Man include a Christmas coin created for Christmas 2017. The coin features a dove carrying an olive branch. A special collection has been released to celebrate the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man Post Office said: “For the year of 2017, Tower Mint Ltd on behalf of the Isle of Man Government has issued a new collection of circulating coins. “These designs offer a modern and up to date style whilst focusing on Manx and Isle of Man related landmarks, themes and traditions.” The region has also released two commemorative stamps for the wedding of Prince Harry, 33, and Meghan Markle, 36. Another rare coin is a £2 selling for £2,500. A rare £2 coin with a Charles Dickens design is listed for a huge £2,500 on the auction website. The coin has not one, but two rare errors – both the edge inscription and the picture of the Queen’s head are different to the coin’s standard design. The description reads: “ Very rare Charles Dickens 2 pound coin. Edge inscription “something will turn up” is upside down.” Another rare 50p coin is the EEC coin. The coin was minted to celebrate the UK’s Presidency of the Council of Ministers and completion of the Single European Market, however, it is no longer in circulation. Rare 50p coins such as this Olympic swimming coin often sell online for large sums. This coin was sold yesterday on eBay for a whopping sum of £510. Seller “grace0509grace” said of the coin: “This rare Swimming Team GB Olympic 50p coin is on sale, still fresh and new.” But what exactly is the 50p and how rare is it really? Olympic 50p coins were released in 2012 when the world famous games were held in the capital city of London. These coins are fairly rare, with some among them being in the top then rarest 50 pence pieces. The aquatics 50p coins minted in 2010 have a scarcity rating of 11 out of 100, and one coin has a number of issues with minting errors. However, the coin sold on eBay yesterday is not one of these coins. This coin is the Team GB 50p coin, which was released ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics. It was designed by Tim Sharp and has the image of a swimmer with the Team GB logo about it. However, this coin is not particularly rare. It is has a mintage of 6,400,000. There are many more rare coins that sell for huge sums online. Beatrix Potter 50p coins have also proved incredibly popular, and one recently sold for £250 online. The silver proof coin, which came in its box, is one of 2,500 minted in 2016. New Beatrix Potter coins are being added to the collection currently minted in the UK. The Royal Mint have announced today that following Peter, Flopsy Bunny, Mrs Tittlemouse and a helpful mouse from The Tailor of Gloucester will all be available to purchase.

The Blacklist aired its 100th episode on Wednesday, and the NBC drama celebrated in style.
Liz, Reddington and the FBI task force have already concocted 99 other elaborate schemes to take down the world’s most dangerous criminals, but the plan carried out in this milestone hour was among the series’ most fun to watch. (Think Ocean’s Eleven — but with more vacuums!)
This week’s blacklister is Abraham Stern (played by Nathan Lane), who finds himself on a collision course with Red as they both try to locate a multimillion-dollar fortune. And it turns out that Abraham is slightly more entitled to the money than Red is, seeing as the dough is Abraham’s inheritance.
Abraham’s father worked for the U.S. Mint decades ago and, while he was there, managed to steal thousands of Federal Reserve notes worth $ 100,000 a pop. But when he was demoted at the Mint for stealing the cash — even though no one could actually prove he did it — he minted four unique bronze pennies that served as a map to where he stored the money. (The eventually-revealed hiding spot? The exact Mint office where he once worked! It’s always the place you least suspect, folks.)
Red and Abraham have the same goal — find all four pennies and locate the fortune before the other man does — and they ultimately decide to work together, agreeing to a 50/50 split of the money once they get their hands on it. Abraham tells Red the story of his father’s theft, the two bond over being crafty criminals and they come up with a ridiculously detailed scheme to rob the U.S. Mint offices… until, naturally, Abraham double-crosses Red, pointing a gun at him and confessing that he has no interest in splitting the money. It is Abraham’s birthright, after all, and he wants 100 percent of the moolah.
So, with the help of a sleek montage set to Saint Motel’s “My Type” — because nothing accompanies a heist better than a saxophone solo! — Abraham turns his plan into a solo operation and successfully locates the money, stashed away in the boiler room of Denver’s Mint offices. But just as Abraham begins stuffing the cash in bags, Red puts his own solo plan into motion, and manages to literally suction the cash out of Abraham’s hands and into a truck waiting outside. (I can’t adequately describe with words how this went down. Just know there were some industrial vacuums involved, and it was awesome.)
In the end, Red gets his fortune, and Abraham gets arrested after Red tips off the task force to Abraham’s Mint robbery. As for Liz, she spends the entire hour transforming into a blacklister herself, taking a page from The Stewmaker’s Season 1 playbook and dissolving the body of Bobby Navarro, whom she killed in last week’s installment. And when the National Police Department finds a bloody rag that Liz accidentally left behind while cleaning up Navarro’s body, she even goes so far as to break into the NPD’s evidence locker and steal the rag from their files, ensuring the lab won’t detect her prints on it. (In case you didn’t realize, Liz’s evolution into a full-blown antihero is well underway.)
But despite all the excitement of the 100th episode, what with the robbery and hydrochloric acid and such, the episode ends on a quiet note: Red exchanges the fourth and final bronze penny for a hat that Winston Churchill wore during World War II. And given Red’s penchant for fedoras, there’s perhaps no more fitting end to Episode 100 than for him to get a brand new hat. It’s the little things, y’know?

The glaring error has been pointed out by coin experts on a number of 2015 Britannia £2 coins, and the printing mistake could make coin collectors a hefty sum.
Britannia has a long standing history with British coinage.
It first appeared on a 1672 farthing during the reign of Charles II and has since featured on a British coin in one way or another.
In 2008 Britannia was dropped from the 50p coin, and it wasn’t until 2015 when she made her return on Britain’s highest denomination coin.
The coins with the error show the Queen’s head rotated clockwise by around 150 degrees – but with only 650,000 in circulation, and just a few thousand ‘upside down’, you will have to dig deep to find a special one.
According to experts at Change Checker earlier this year, there are around 3,250 of the ‘iverted’ £2 coins in circulation.
The Royal Mint said the misalignment was “almost certainly the rest of one of the dies working loose and rotating during the striking process”.
eBay is home to many items for collectors and rare coins pop up on the site all the time.
Earlier this week, a rare Celtic Cross £1 coin was selling for a whopping £2,450 on the auction website.
The Celtic Cross coins were issued in both 1996 and 2001 and was designed by Norman Sillman, created as a tribute to Northern Ireland.
Royal Mint described the coin as “A Celtic Cross with a Pimpernel Flower in the centre surrounded by an ancient Torc representing Northern Ireland”.
The inscription around the edge of the coin reads: “DECUS ET TUTAMEN”. It means “an ornament and a safeguard”.
So why was this coin worth so much? Errors on coins make them collectable and on this coin the lettering around the edge was printed upside down.
This means it is readable when collectors hold the coin with the Celtic design upwards. With correct versions of the coin the lettering should be the other way around.
The seller of the coin Michaelpitchford said: “Third in a four-year series featuring the constituent parts of the United Kingdom, the 1996 one pound coin represents Northern Ireland. Reaching deep into the history of Northern Ireland, Norman Sillman’s reverse design depicts a richly decorated Celtic-style cross, surmounted by the famous Broighter collar.
“At the centre of the design lies a pimpernel, the lovely flower which flourishes around Lough Neagh. The obverse design is Raphael Maklouf’s elegant portrait of Her Majesty The Queen.”

The coin has become a sought-after collector’s item with 28 people currently watching it on the auction website.
The 1707 Tercentenary Act of Union £2 coin was minted in 2007 and its large cost is at a ‘buy it now’ price on the site.
The design of the coin is divided into four quarters – one with a rose, a thistle occupying two of the quarters and a portcullis in each of the other two quarters.
The four quarters make a jigsaw motif and the dates 1707 and 2007 and the words ‘two pounds’ surround it.
The Royal Mint issued the two pound coin to commemorate the union of England and Scotland.
But what makes this coin so special? The coin apparently has a very rare minting misprint.
There are multiple listings on eBay and other sites, such as Gumtree, that state it has a printing error due to the words around the coin being printed ‘upside down’, in relation to the Queen’s head.
But the Royal Mint confirmed this is not the case to the Liverpool Echo.
A spokesperson for the Royal Mint told the website: “It is a common misconception that this is an error when in fact it is not.
“The orientation of the edge inscription in relation to the Queen’s portrait is completely random as the edge inscription is applied before the coin is struck.
“Working off the law of averages this would mean that about half the coins struck will have the edgeinscrbption in the orientation shown in the article – which in the case of the Act of Union £2 piece would equate to just under four million pieces.”
The coin was created by Yvonne Holton and 7,545,000 were minted.
