Aircraft to Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport. Fiumicino, Italy, on July 14th, 2022.
An American Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

  • A teenager traveling alone for the first time was not allowed to buy food on a layover.
  • He was told by staff to stay with the group despite seeking permission multiple times.
  • He was left hungry on a near-two hour layover due to likely "staff shortages", his stepmom was told.

American Airlines did not allow a 15-year-old to buy food during a layover between flights after he asked staff for permission multiple times.

The teenager was flying unaccompanied from Jacksonville, Florida, where he was visiting his sister, back home to Albany, New York via Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The layover was supposed to be for an hour, but ended up being almost two as his flight was delayed, which Insider verified via flight details.

The incident is the latest involving American Airlines' treatment of unaccompanied minors reported by Insider amid a summer of travel chaos. The airline sent a 12-year-old child to the wrong state in June, and it lost a child's passport in July.

Jennifer Roback, the boy's sister, told Insider that he was not allowed to get food from a shop in the terminal just a few feet away as he had to stay with a group of other unaccompanied minors at all times on the layover.

"He didn't have breakfast so he hadn't eaten all day and was just left hungry," she said.

When the teen first asked the accompanying staff member he was told to ask someone else, Roback said, as that person was not the assigned leader. He then asked another person a few more times but was continually refused.

"I was upset about it because my brother's never flown alone before so it was a big trip for him," she said. "It bothers me that his way back wasn't great and I was angry for him."

When his step-mom picked him up from Albany airport, she went to the American Airlines desk to find out what happened. They apologized and told her it was probably due to staff shortages, she said.

"I know that there have been a lot of staff shortages because of the pandemic, but I feel like companies are now just trying to use that as an excuse," Roback told Insider. "It's one thing if someone closes a register at a grocery store, but it's another thing when you deny children food."

Roback messaged American Airlines on Twitter on August 8 about the incident and the airline responded: "If your brother had money to grab a bite to eat, our team should've had someone take him. DM his record locator and we'll pass this on."

American Airlines did not respond to Insider's request for comment.

Interpol chief warns Europe of ISIS 2.0 when jihadists serving minor sentences leave jail https://briefnews.eu/interpol-chief-warns-europe-of-isis-2-0-when-jihadists-serving-minor-sentences-leave-jail/ https://briefnews.eu/interpol-chief-warns-europe-of-isis-2-0-when-jihadists-serving-minor-sentences-leave-jail/#respond Thu, 20 Dec 2018 07:28:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/interpol-chief-warns-europe-of-isis-2-0-when-jihadists-serving-minor-sentences-leave-jail/ Europe should brace itself for a new wave of terrorist attacks when Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) supporters serving short sentences begin to emerge from jail in a few years, the head of Interpol has warned.

The next big terrorist threat in Europe could come from IS supporters currently in prison for minor terrorism-related crimes, according to Interpol Secretary-General Jurgen Stock. As they leave jail in the coming years, their radical beliefs are likely to trigger a relapse.

“In many parts of the world, in Europe but also Asia, this generation of early supporters will be released in the next couple of years, and they may again be part of a terrorist group or those supporting terrorist activities,” Stock said, estimating that the average jailed jihadist is serving a sentence of between two and five years.

Radicalized wives & kids of ISIS fighters ‘must be identified as jihadis’ – German intel chief

“We could soon be facing a second wave of other Islamic State-linked or radicalized individuals that you might call ISIS 2.0,” he told the Anglo-American Press Association, as cited by the Guardian.

Possible members of IS sleeper cells aside, there is an ongoing threat of returning terrorists fleeing Iraq and Syria since the demise of Islamic State. Those disenchanted fighters with nothing to lose have become a major issue for local law enforcement.

“The security agencies are concerned about when they are coming back because most of them are battle hardened, they are trained, and they are internationally connected,” Stock said, noting that going to Syria and Iraq in the first place “was a huge opportunity to network on an international level.”

“These contacts still exist and we shouldn’t forget that,” he said.

It’s a guessing game as to where the retreating jihadists are going to flee when they’re squeezed out of Syria and Iraq. One of the probable destinations is southeast Asia or Africa, where there are still terrorist hotbeds. Another option for the jihadists is to keep a low profile and try to sneak back into Europe.

“With ISIS defeated geographically, these individuals will either try to move to other areas of conflict in southeast Asia, or Africa, or remain in Europe to carry out attacks,” Stock said.

Interpol has some 45,000 suspected foreign fighters in its database but it’s a Sisyphean task for local police to track them down, as many have perished on the battlefield, some are holed up in Syria or Iraq, and the whereabouts of many others is unknown.

Intelligence agencies in many countries, including in Europe, which has seen a spate of Islamist-linked terrorist attacks in recent years, have sounded the alarm over the threat posed by returnees.

Germany’s intelligence chief has warned that the children of jihadists coming from war zones can grow up to follow in the footsteps of their parents. Hans-Georg Maassen called for both widows and children of IS fighters to be treated as jihadists, arguing that they pose a considerable security risk after being brainwashed by IS propaganda.

The same concerns were echoed by the authorities in France, which has welcomed at least 300 jihadist militants back from Syria and Iraq. There have been calls for French citizens arrested on terrorist charges in Syria and Iraq to be tried there rather than brought back to France.

The Ford Edge 2019 gets better tech and minor facelift https://briefnews.eu/the-ford-edge-2019-gets-better-tech-and-minor-facelift/ https://briefnews.eu/the-ford-edge-2019-gets-better-tech-and-minor-facelift/#respond Wed, 10 Oct 2018 14:23:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-ford-edge-2019-gets-better-tech-and-minor-facelift/

Ford sells a lot of Edge SUVs. It unloaded 142,603 in 2017 alone. The reason is that it’s a solid sport utility vehicle with ample storage space. It’s a big vehicle so it’s not particularly fast or agile, but it gets the job done. With the 2019 refresh (starting at $ 29,995), the automaker sticks with what works while creating a slightly more aggressive-looking vehicle and updating its driver-assistance features.

At the center of that new technology is Co-Pilot360. The Edge is the first Ford vehicle with the updated driver-assistance suite. Like other automakers, Ford has decided to drop its newest tech in an SUV because people buy a lot of SUVs. The result is a safer vehicle with some of the more important features available as standard equipment.

The biggest update to the semi-autonomous features is the lane-keep assist. Ford’s previous system was reactionary instead of proactive. The vehicle would realize it was close to a lane and nudge itself back toward the center of the lane. It worked, but riders suffered from a bit of a ping-pong effect. On Co-Pilot360, the vehicle does its best to track itself into the center of the lane.

During my drives on the highways of Utah, I still noticed a bit of bouncing back and forth between lane edges, but it’s far less than before. Even with these tiny ricochets, it’s a superb evolution of the feature for the automaker.

In addition to doing a better job keeping you in your lane, Ford updated its adaptive cruise control to work better in gridlock. Co-Pilot360 will track and follow the vehicle ahead of the Edge even in stop-and-go traffic. So if a car in front of the SUV comes to a complete stop and then starts up again (within three seconds), the Edge will continue to follow it. After three seconds, the driver just needs to tap the “resume” button on the steering wheel. For commuters, this is great news and during my tests, it worked as expected.

While these updates are great, it’s impressive that the features you hope never to use, like post-collision braking and auto-emergency braking are now standard. Ford even demoed the auto-emergency braking with an inflatable car (you know in case things go horribly wrong and the system fails to brake). I drove the Edge at the balloon vehicle, took my foot off the gas and brake and the SUV stopped within one foot of the faux car. It works, and it’s standard.

Behind the wheel (when not driving the vehicle into giant balloon cars), the Edge delivers what you would expect from a mid-size SUV. The 2.0-liter 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and eight-speed transmission give the SUV enough oomph for 90 percent of the freeway and city driving the car will encounter. But if you want to gun it from a dead stop, be prepared to wait a few beats before the Edge lurches forward. It’s not meant to be a drag racer, but it takes a bit to get used too especially when trying to pull out onto a busy street.

The vehicle has all-wheel drive, but for efficiency’s sake, most of the time the SUV is pulled along by the front two tires. The all-wheel-drive system jumps into action automatically during hard acceleration, when wheels slip or even when towing (up to 3,500 pounds).

The steering, like the powertrain, is on point for the mid-size SUV. No more, no less. It handled itself admirably on free curves and around city intersections. Body roll started to rear its head while hitting sharper mountain corners. Again, the average Edge driver wouldn’t push the car like this. Instead, they want room for five and storage capacity, which the SUV is more than able to handle.

The interior isn’t exciting, but it is comfortable and all the features are laid out in a fashion that should make a driver at home within a few minutes behind the wheel. The storage area is huge for a vehicle this size. Ford has wisely forgone the trend of aggressive tapering off the back of their SUVs, therefore, eating into crucial trunk space. There’s still a bit of an angle there, but unless you’re buying all your things from Costco, you should be fine filling up the SUV with your stuff.

The Sync 3 infotainment system is still a first-rate way to interact with navigation, media, etc, even if it’s not the prettiest system on the market. It’s function over form, and that’s fine. It’s better than being confused trying to figure out how to get directions to the mall. If you’d rather interact with your smartphone, it supports CarPlay and Android Auto.

Ford played it safe with the new Edge. The design changes are small, it drives like you would expect an Edge to drive, and you can still put a week’s worth of groceries for your family of four in the storage area. The Edge sells well; why mess with a good thing?

Burt more importantly, Ford is looking at safety. The Co-Pilot360 system is a great upgrade to the automaker’s driver-assistance suite. The standard features like emergency stopping and braking after an accident make the Edge a more compelling offering. It even has a rear-camera washer standard, so even when you back up, you have a clearer view.

Humboldt Broncos tragedy reminder how precarious bus trips can be in minor sports https://briefnews.eu/humboldt-broncos-tragedy-reminder-how-precarious-bus-trips-can-be-in-minor-sports/ https://briefnews.eu/humboldt-broncos-tragedy-reminder-how-precarious-bus-trips-can-be-in-minor-sports/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 23:40:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/humboldt-broncos-tragedy-reminder-how-precarious-bus-trips-can-be-in-minor-sports/ Every year, thousands of teenage athletes travel millions of miles by bus in search of their dreams. Anybody who has been on one of these bus trips knows they can be long, tedious trips often on isolated, dark highways.

In minor sports, travelling between far flung outposts by bus is usually where one learns about their teammates and deep bonds are forged.

“It’s as important as the ice. You need three things to play a game: players, officials and a puck,” Edmonton Oilers coach Todd McLellan told reporters.

“But for all of those things to happen you’ve got to get all of those people to the facilities and when you are travelling in large groups you are on a bus.”

It was late Friday evening when the charter bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior A hockey team collided with a semi-trailer at an intersection northeast of Saskatoon.

Fifteen members of the team and organization were killed. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team was heading to Nipawin, Sask., for a semifinal game against the Nipawin Hawks.

McLellan is a Saskatchewan native and spent years playing and coaching in the province. He has been on countless bus trips like the team from Humboldt.

“There are nights three, four o’clock in the morning, freezing cold, conditions aren’t that great and they are pushing through it. [The bus] is part of the fabric of our game.”

Edmonton Oilers head coach Todd McLellan spoke to members of the media about his recent trip to Humboldt, Saskatchewan to offer his support to injured players and grieving citizens after tragic bus crash.3:41

‘Everybody can relate’

Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench echoed McLellan’s thoughts.

“This tragedy has hit a number of people, not just us, but I think everybody can relate to this experience,” said Muench.

“Throughout Canada we see teams going out into the Canadian winters on buses all the time, and it’s always a thought in parents’ and fans’ minds about what can happen and unfortunately has happened here.”

Maybe that’s why the outpouring of emotion from the hockey community has been so raw and genuine.

They have all spent many joy filled hours on the bus. A place often recalled as a safe, impenetrable cocoon away from the ice.

“Everyone in hockey has done it. In junior, you are travelling these far distances. That’s why it hits home, everyone has been on that bus before,” Oilers forward Connor McDavid told reporters.

“You are with all of the boys and having a good time. And it never crossed my mind that something like that could happen when I was on the bus. We would hit the rumble strips or something and guys would laugh and think it was funny and never thought anything would happen. I saw it as a haven, a safe space.”

“Some of the best times you spend with your teammates is on the bus,” said Maple Leafs forward Tyler Bozak. “All of us has spent lots of time on buses and it’s just a tragedy.”

“You create a lot of memories there. That’s where the majority of time is spent with your coaches and teammates. You feel safe there and never feel like anything could happen.”

Humboldt, Sask., Mayor Rob Muench understands bus travel is a reality of life in junior hockey. (Liam Richards/Canadian Press)

‘Feel pretty invincible’

Canadian hockey legend and Saskatchewan native Hayley Wickenheiser said when you’re young you savour the experiences of travelling with teammates.

“Early on in your career, you get on the bus and you feel pretty invincible. At 18,19 years old you don’t ever think anything like this could happen. You feel pretty protected and secure on the highways because you are bigger than most vehicles,” Wickenheiser told CBC.

“The bus is a place where only the team can go. A lot happens on the bus; it has its own kind of weird dynamic.”

The four-time Olympian said the culture of the bus is so entrenched across sports that she knew who had likely been hurt in the accident.

“When I heard a semi hit the front of the bus, I knew who would have been wiped out. It’s usually the staff and the rookies in the front and the veterans in the back.”

Wickenheiser said that as her career went on, she became more wary of extensive bus travel.

“You start thinking about some of the ‘what ifs’ and some of the conditions we were driving through. We would go through snowstorms and come upon accidents in some sketchy conditions on these very roads across Western Canada. So it’s very real, it hits home.”

Facebook is nabbing shows left and right for its Watch platform, which finished rolling out to US users in September. While it’s added current content with a Humans of New York program, a reality show with Marshawn Lynch and several popular Latino YouTube series, Watch is about to get a legend. Bill Murray is getting own unscripted comedy visiting minor league baseball teams with his brother. Because of course.

Bill Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray’s Extra Innings will debut the first of ten 8-minute episodes on Monday, November 20th, with a new one coming every week. Murray, a well-known Chicago Cubs fanatic, is also an apparent longtime supporter of minor-league baseball. Across the show’s run, Bill and Brian will visit the St. Paul Saints and Charleston RiverDogs (both of which Murray partly owns) as well as the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks and the Kansas City T-Bones. They’ll also head to the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to hang with kids and pay homage to tragically lesser-known baseball history, respectively.

  • Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky was assaulted and injured on Friday in his Bowling Green home, police said.
  • One man has been arrested and charged with assault.
  • Paul’s spokeswoman said Paul was “blindsided” by the assault, but is “fine.”

A man has been arrested and charged with assaulting and injuring Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Kentucky State Police said in a news release Saturday that Paul suffered a minor injury when 59-year-old Rene Boucher assaulted him at his Warren County home on Friday afternoon.

The release did not provide details of the assault or the nature of Paul’s injury. In a statement, Paul spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper said the Republican senator is “fine.” The statement said Paul was “blindsided” by the assault but she did not provide further details.

Police told local ABC affiliate WBKO that Boucher was an acquaintance of Paul, and that the FBI is now investigating the incident.

“FBI is involved making sure it wasn’t politically motivated,” Trooper Hodges, the public affairs officer for the Kentucky State Police, told the outlet.

Boucher, of Bowling Green, is charged with fourth-degree assault with a minor injury. He is being held at Warren County’s jail on $ 5,000 bond.

An automated phone system at the jail did not provide access to lawyer information for Boucher.
