On Monday, news emerged that Toyota has reportedly signed a $ 500 million deal with Uber regarding self-driving technology. The Japanese automaker will integrate Uber’s autonomous driving technology into some of its Sienna minivans, which—if all goes well—will enter service at some future date as ride-hailing vehicles accessed through Uber’s platform. This deal follows a $ 300 million investment in Uber by Toyota in 2016.
Toyota is one of three OEMs linked with Uber. In August 2016, Uber signed a $ 300 million deal with Volvo to develop self-driving vehicles and announced plans in late 2017 to buy 24,000 XC90 SUVs from the Swedish company. And in January 2017, Daimler (which owns Mercedes-Benz) revealed that it plans to eventually use Uber’s network to offer rides in autonomous vehicles that it is developing.
Toyota’s progress in autonomous-vehicle technology has been lagging behind many other such programs. The consulting firm Navigant Research ranked it 12th out of 19 such efforts at the beginning of the year, far behind GM and Waymo. This is despite a hefty patent portfolio and a $ 1 billion investment in Jaybridge Robotics in 2016.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has agreed to supply Waymo with “thousands” of Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans for use as autonomous vehicles. The announcement follows more than a year of collaboration between the two companies, which included a previous batch of 600 Pacificas that Waymo converted into self-driving test vehicles.
–
The expanded partnership between the two companies comes shortly after Waymo announced it will expand its self-driving-vehicle program to Atlanta. The southern site marks the 25th city in which Waymo has tested its autonomous vehicles. Other cities include Detroit, Michigan; Kirkland, Washington; Austin, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and Mountain View, California, as well as a handful of additional cities surrounding the latter two locations.
–
–
By expanding its testing beyond the sunny and predictable climates of Arizona and California, Waymo is looking to ensure its autonomous technology can react properly to road conditions in unpredictable weather. Waymo claims its cars are currently capable of Level 4 autonomy and that the vehicle does not need driver interaction in select conditions on predetermined routes. In fact, certain Waymo Pacifica vans in the Phoenix area are currently operating sans backup safety drivers.

Ultimately, Waymo hopes to achieve Level 5 automation, which would allow its self-driving technology to replace human drivers in all conditions. It will probably need a lot more test Pacificas, however, before it reaches that goal.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said on Friday it was recalling more than 162,000 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivans because a software glitch may cause the vehicles to stall.
The Italian-American automaker said one accident had potentially been linked to the defect. Under a rare set of conditions, a vehicle’s engine control module may incorrectly assess the engine’s operating status and cause it to stall, Fiat Chrysler said.
Dealers will update the engine control software, the company said, adding that most incidents associated with the glitch took place at low speeds or when the vehicles were starting up.
The Center for Auto Safety, a consumer advocacy group, petitioned the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in November to investigate the issue after it said at least 50 owners had reported stalling in new Pacifica minivans. The agency asked Fiat Chrysler to answer questions about the stalling last month.
Fiat Chrysler said it had begun investigating the issue before the petition was filed.
The recall includes nearly 154,000 vehicles in the United States and more than 8,000 others around the world, but the company did not immediately say when the new software would be available.

Honda said it’s recalling about 900,000 Odyssey minivans from the 2011 through 2017 model years in North America because second-row seats can come loose in “moderate to heavy braking.” Some 800,000 of those are in the United States. The issue relates to the second-row seating system’s ability to move from side to side. The system is designed to make seating comfortable for two adults or to fit up to three child seats in the second row, for example. The seats have the option of being latched in either a “standard” or “wide” outboard position. But if they’re improperly latched, the seats could come loose and jerk forward.
–
Honda said it has received 46 reports of “minor injuries” related to the issue. The company said it’s looking into the appropriate repair to ensure proper latching and will let Odyssey owners know when that fix is available. In the meantime, Honda has published detailed instructions on how to properly install and latch the second-row seats. It warns owners to be sure not to latch on to the center part of the floor strikers, where they could improperly latch on to a collar or a rib on the floor, as shown below.

Honda said recall notifications will go out in the mail in late December. Owners can see if their Odysseys are affected at www.recalls.honda.com or by calling 888–234–2138. Aside from the 800,000 in the United States, 69,000 of the recalled vehicles are in Canada, 28,000 are in Mexico, and about 2000 were sold outside of North America, a company spokesman said.

This latest recall is unrelated to one that began in February, when Honda recalled 633,753 Odysseys from the 2011 through 2016 model years to fix a second-row release lever that could stay unlocked and cause the seats to move unexpectedly. A company spokesman said vehicles that have not yet been fixed under the earlier recall will require both repairs.

Waymo, the self-driving project owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, is preparing for the day when the century-old relationship between car and driver becomes discombobulated.
On Monday, within the confines of its typically off-limits testing facility known as Castle, the company showed off how it plans on helping people adjust to a future where the car is the driver and humans are no longer behind the wheel. The heavy subtext: we’re getting close to the moment when we pull our human test drivers out of our self-driving vehicles.
Waymo is still developing and testing its software and hardware, which includes a robust suite of sensors that allow its self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans to see and hear the world around it. This includes the vision system, radars, and light detection, and ranging radar known as LiDAR.
But as that technology matures, engineers and designers are also building out user experience features that aim to help humans interact with and, eventually, trust self-driving cars.
The basic functions of a car—and its relationship with the driver—are fundamentally the same as they were when the Ford Model T arrived in 1908. The driver uses the steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals to navigate the vehicle on city streets, highways, and rural roads. Even when people become passengers—say while using a ride-hailing service like Uber or Lyft—there is a human driver they can communicate with.
“That communication builds trust between you and the driver,” said Ryan Powell, Waymo’s head of user experience design, during a presentation at the Castle proving grounds near Atwater, Calif.. “And so you feel at ease on that ride, you feel safe, you feel secure, you know what to expect.”
Waymo is trying to recreate that experience with a variety of features from audio cues and visual messages during the ride as well as an app that is still under development. For example, Waymo is looking at developing a feature that would allow the car to recognize when riders are near so it can pull over and let them in instead of continuing to the designated pick-up spot.
“Every moment in a self-driving car matters,” said Juliet Rothenberg, product manager of Waymo’s in-car user experience. “Small touches are critical for safety. They’re also vital for creating a more convenient in-car experience.”
The Rider Experience
People who are participating in Waymo’s “early rider program,” which launched this April in the Phoenix area, have been interacting with the user interface and regularly provide feedback, according to Waymo. Now the company is sharing information and images of these features with the broader public.
When riders first step into the self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, they’ll notice two displays and a button console with four choices: “help,” “lock and unlock,” “pull over,” and a blue button that says “start ride.”
The two screens, which are attached to the back of the headrests, display a welcome message.
Once the “start ride” button is pushed, the display message disappears and is replaced with a real-time view of the route. The displays showcase relevant information, like pedestrians, other vehicles, and objects in the road. It will also display less relevant objects like trees and buildings about every five seconds. Even here, Waymo has tinkered with what is the best mix of information for the rider, and just how to present it. For instance, greater emphasis is placed on the most relevant objects like pedestrians and bicyclists, while buildings are less visible.
At the top of the screen, an estimated arrival message constantly updates as the vehicle makes progress towards its destination.
Other messages show up towards the bottom of the display, typically to explain the behavior of the vehicle. For instance, if the self-driving minivan stops at an intersection because a pedestrian is about to cross, passengers would see a “yielding to pedestrians” message. They might also notice the crosswalk that the pedestrian is using is illuminated on the screen.
The screen also shows when the self-driving minivan has entered a construction zone. If there are multiple construction cones, those too will be displayed.
The company has also tried to anticipate the needs of apprehensive passengers, by mimicking the behavior of human drivers. For instance, as the self-driving minivan prepares to make a right turn, the camera angle displayed on the screen moves to the left to signal that the car is looking for objects like oncoming traffic.
Waymo’s designers are hardly finished with these features. The company is constantly testing and tweaking, including experimenting with using sound to alert riders who are blind when their vehicle has arrived.

Eight years into its effort to make self-driving cars a reality, executives from Waymo say they’re shifting their focus from the technology itself and turning more attention toward the needs of people who will use the vehicles. The company, an independent subsidiary spun out from Google’s self-driving-car project, has announced that it’s adding 500 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans to its autonomous fleet.
–
That represents a massive increase from the 100 Pacificas that Waymo outfitted with its self-driving systems last year. Many of the new vehicles will head to Phoenix, Arizona, where the company has created an Early Rider program that allows members of the public to use self-driving cars in their daily routines in exchange for giving feedback on the vehicles. The program quietly launched over the past two months, Waymo revealed.
–
“We’ll learn things like where people want to go in a self-driving car, how they communicate with our vehicles, and what information and controls they want to see inside,” said Waymo CEO John Krafcik. “Our early riders will play an important role in shaping the way we bring self-driving technology into the world.”

One of the first families chosen to participate in Waymo’s Early Rider program poses with one of the company’s Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans.
–
Waymo says it is seeking “hundreds” of people from a variety of backgrounds to use the vehicles in Phoenix and its suburbs. Residents interested in participating can apply to be part of the program on the company’s website. The application hints at the broad spectrum of users Waymo hopes to attract, from enthusiastic adopters of new technology to people in households where someone has a medical condition that prevents driving.
–
Three families have already been enrolled in Early Rider. Their reasons for wanting to use the self-driving vehicles range from helping shuttle multiple kids to school to relaxing en route to their destinations to logistical support for opposite-direction commutes.

“Rather than offering people one or two rides, the goal of this program is to give participants access to our fleet every day, at any time, to go anywhere within an area that’s about twice the size of San Francisco,” Krafcik wote in a blog post on Medium.
–
Riders use the vehicles much as one might call a ride-hailing service, summoning the vehicles via an app that Waymo developed internally, according to a company spokesperson.
–
Among companies pursuing self-driving technology, only Volvo has launched a similar effort, recruiting as many as 100 households in and around Gothenburg, Sweden, to use XC90 SUVs equipped with autonomous technology in their everyday travels in geofenced areas. Recruiting for this program, called Drive Me, is underway now, and participants are expected to hit the road later this year.
–
It’s unclear how quickly Waymo intends to ramp up its Early Rider testing. The first 100 Pacificas, ordered last spring, arrived in December 2016. After receiving the minivans from Chrysler, Waymo needs to outfit them with its technology, which includes a suite of sensors built in-house and attached to the minivan in a decidedly non-integrated way. The sensor-housing goiters on the front fenders, grilles, and roofs of the Pacificas must make Fiat Chrysler Automobiles design chief Ralph Gilles cringe.
–

–
The fleet expansion nevertheless bodes well for FCA, which has not invested in autonomous technology the way some other automakers have but instead has staked its future mobility fortunes on partnerships like the one with Waymo. In a statement, FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said, “The collaboration between FCA and Waymo has been advantageous for both companies as we continue to work together to fully understand the steps needed to bring self-driving vehicles to market.”
–
The Pacifica’s electrical, powertrain, chassis, and structural systems are all modified to accommodate Waymo’s self-driving technology. A group of engineers from both companies, located together in southeast Michigan, collaborated to develop the vehicles. The self-driving vehicles have been tested at FCA’s proving grounds in both Chelsea, Michigan, and Yucca, Arizona.

Not all 500 of the minivans are destined for Phoenix, although Waymo is not yet saying exactly how many will be used there or revealing the destination for the remaining Pacificas. The project represents a big win for Arizona, which has aggressively courted pilot projects using self-driving vehicles. When California revoked the registrations of Uber’s autonomous vehicles following a public standoff in December, the company relocated some of its testing to Arizona. Ford and General Motors’ Cruise Automation both test in Arizona, as does Local Motors, a company that, among other things, is producing autonomous shuttles.

While Alphabet’s legal battle with Uber continues to rumble on, its Waymo self-driving initiative is going from strength to strength. Its laser-mounted white minivans are consistently proving their reliability on the roads and besting their rivals, so much so that the company now wants humans to get involved. In a blog post, the company today announced that it’s expanding its test program in Phoenix by allowing families to register for its early rider program.
“Over the course of this trial, we’ll be accepting hundreds of people with diverse backgrounds and transportation needs who want to ride in and give feedback about Waymo’s self-driving cars,” said John Krafcik, Waymo CEO. “Rather than offering people one or two rides, the goal of this program is to give participants access to our fleet every day, at any time, to go anywhere within an area that’s about twice the size of San Francisco.”
To cater for this drastic increase in passengers, Waymo is increasing the size of its fleet. Right now, the company has 100 autonomous Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans, but that number will rise to 600 in the coming months. The idea is to see where people want to go, but also monitor how families interact with the cars and assess what features they’d like to see inside them.
Waymo needs just one person from each household to apply, and if they’re accepted, all members of their family will become part of the early rider program. Waymo has been careful not to put limits on the service either, adding that it encourages riders to use its vehicles “as frequently as possible.” To that end, the company won’t ask for any money, all rides will be free.
