It sells, apparently, and Chrysler Corp. made sure to instill a little bit of it, overtly or subconsciously, into its print […]

American demand for minivans is still shrinking. In fact, July sales in particular tumbled as three of the four top-selling minivan nameplates – a trio that accounts for nearly three-quarters of the sector’s volume – combined to lose more than 5,400 sales, year-over-year. Top Boxes: Every Minivan Ranked from Worst to Best https://briefnews.eu/top-boxes-every-minivan-ranked-from-worst-to-best/ https://briefnews.eu/top-boxes-every-minivan-ranked-from-worst-to-best/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 10:16:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-boxes-every-minivan-ranked-from-worst-to-best/ –It’s a running joke in the Car and Driver offices that, were logic the sole factor in vehicle purchases, manufacturers would only need to offer maybe four or five types of vehicles, say, a compact hatchback, a pickup truck, a mid-size station wagon, a large SUV, and, yes, a minivan. These cars would suit the needs of the vast majority of the population in terms of frugality or hauling people and/or cargo most of the time, and all the ego-driven sporty vehicles and supercars would be cast aside. ---Yet there’s some truth there, especially regarding the minivan. Whereas many drivers see the purchase of a minivan as a sign of giving up, of sacrificing fun on the altar of practicality, there’s still plenty of goodness to be found in the segment. Wisconsin woman accused of driving with child on minivan roof https://briefnews.eu/wisconsin-woman-accused-of-driving-with-child-on-minivan-roof/ https://briefnews.eu/wisconsin-woman-accused-of-driving-with-child-on-minivan-roof/#respond Wed, 01 Nov 2017 19:37:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wisconsin-woman-accused-of-driving-with-child-on-minivan-roof/

A mom in Ozaukee, Wis., north of Milwaukee, has been charged with child endangerment after police say she had her 9-year-old son ride atop her minivan to hold down a plastic pool she was transporting.

According to court documents, Amber Schmunk, 28, was trying to get the pool home in Saukville, Wis., but it wouldn’t fit in her vehicle. Police said she “decided to put the pool on top of the minivan, but had no way to strap it down, so she had her child climb on the roof and hold it down while she drove.” She also reportedly told officers it was “only for a short time, maybe 20-30 seconds,” and that she thought it was OK because her father had “let her do things like that when she was that age.”

Here’s a puzzler to this report. According to Milwaukee’s WTMJ-TV, she also told police that she thought it was safe because she had used a strap to hold the boy down. So if she had a strap, it’s hard to understand why she didn’t use just the strap, rather than the boy-strap combination.

The report doesn’t specify how fast she drove nor how far, other than saying it was within her neighborhood. Police were tipped off by a motorist who was behind her, who raises another puzzle, as the motorist reported watching Schmunk stop to put the child and the supposedly too-big-to-fit pool inside the van.

Schmunk is back in court Nov. 14. If found guilty, she faces a possible 10 years in prison and $ 25,000 fine.

Chrysler hoons Pacifica minivan, issues recall https://briefnews.eu/chrysler-hoons-pacifica-minivan-issues-recall/ https://briefnews.eu/chrysler-hoons-pacifica-minivan-issues-recall/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2017 15:44:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chrysler-hoons-pacifica-minivan-issues-recall/

Chrysler is recalling about 50,000 Pacifica minivans after finding an issue with a seat belt. According to the NHTSA recall notice, “In certain passenger seating and vehicle situations, the second-row center seating position seat belt buckle could cause the left outboard seat belt to become unlatched.” The affected vehicles have the eight-passenger configuration, and includes 47,927 Pacificas in the U.S. from model years 2017 and 2018, plus another 1,908 vehicles in Canada.

It appears the problem occurs under spirited driving (or “extreme handling maneuvers”), which is kind of funny, because: minivan. FCA’s statement, though, adds a little more clarity. The problem was discovered through Chrysler’s own testing, not some dad hooning his minivan on the way to soccer practice. The problem only occurs when there are people sitting in both the center and left outboard seat of the second row. In hard cornering, the left seat belt’s release button would come into contact with the center buckle, which caused it to unlatch.

FCA will notify owners, and will install a shorter second-row seat belt buckle for free. The automaker is unaware of any injuries related to this issue, but urges customers to “avoid using the second-row center seat in conjunction with the other second-row positions.” Better yet, if you’re going to autocross your Pacifica this weekend, leave your kids on the sidelines. They’re just added weight anyway.

Leapin' loser! Detroit police chase ends with suspect jumping onto oncoming minivan (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/leapin-loser-detroit-police-chase-ends-with-suspect-jumping-onto-oncoming-minivan-video/ https://briefnews.eu/leapin-loser-detroit-police-chase-ends-with-suspect-jumping-onto-oncoming-minivan-video/#respond Fri, 08 Sep 2017 21:43:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/leapin-loser-detroit-police-chase-ends-with-suspect-jumping-onto-oncoming-minivan-video/

A wanted man connected to an attempted murder had already evaded Detroit police once, but when he jumped a freeway median and ran into oncoming traffic, there was no escape even after he ran up the hood and roof of a minivan.

The suspect led Detroit police on two high-speed pursuits Friday, entering and leaving Interstate-75 northbound several times before his front driver’s side tire went flat before 1:00pm, KPRC reported.

The man abandoned his vehicle near the freeway’s concrete median, before jumping and running into oncoming traffic. As a Chrysler Town and Country minivan attempted to drive around him, he bounded onto its hood and fell onto its roof. It’s yet unclear what was going on in his head at this moment.

Homicide detectives had been chasing him in his charcoal gray SUV since 11:30am, Deputy Chief David LeValley told the Detroit Free Press.

A female victim was in extremely grave condition after being shot in the head Thursday morning in southwest Detroit, WJBK reported.

“The victim is at a local hospital in gravely critical condition,” LeValley said. “There was an exchange of gunfire with a small caliber gun and she was hit in the head. He was an associate in the neighborhood in southwest Detroit.”

This minivan lets you monitor your kids in the back (Darth Vader voice optional) https://briefnews.eu/this-minivan-lets-you-monitor-your-kids-in-the-back-darth-vader-voice-optional/ https://briefnews.eu/this-minivan-lets-you-monitor-your-kids-in-the-back-darth-vader-voice-optional/#respond Tue, 01 Aug 2017 02:45:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-minivan-lets-you-monitor-your-kids-in-the-back-darth-vader-voice-optional/

My son was sitting in the back of a 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite minivan (base price of $ 29,990), and he had no idea what was about to happen. Using a new feature called CabinWatch, I was able to monitor my two kids in the back of the vehicle. A screen shows a wide-angle view, and you can tap the touchscreen to zoom in on any part of the video image in real time.

Then, things got interesting.

When I pushed the CabinTalk button, I started using a Darth Vader voice — think the scene from Tommy Boy where the main character talks into a fan. It’s amazing how alert everyone in the minivan became suddenly, not knowing this was a feature in the Honda (I’ve never “heard” it was available in any other car). Interestingly, you can also hear what they say even in the second-row seats. And, when you talk, you can pick an option to use the speakers or interrupt their movie and speak through the headphones. When you do, the video they are viewing also pauses.

My kids are well-behaved, but I can see where a parent might use this feature to keep tabs on anyone in the back seats with this visual and audio monitoring system. Thankfully, it wasn’t too distracting. I could press the CabinTalk button and then focus on the road. My wife glanced at the screen a few times as well when we were on a longer drive.

It’s easy to imagine how much fun we had with CabinTalk. In a few cases, especially when I drove around with my nephew in the back, it was handy because we could discuss where we wanted to eat lunch without the typical “can you hear me now?” problems.

This is the first Honda to use its own Wi-Fi hotspot, and when we tested this feature, it became more obvious how a true helicopter parent might check on their kids — you can check the screen and see which device they are using and even visually inspect which app they’re using. I see CabinWatch and CabinTalk as deterrents mostly. Your kids know you can keep an eye on them.

Unlike monitoring systems that exist to check a lane or behind the vehicle, the interior-focused CabinView works at any speed. (Even on several other Honda makes and models, the live feed of the side angle when you change lanes or make a turn only works for a short time.)

At the 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite site, the CabinWatch feature page shows a small child in a car seat facing the opposite direction (as required), demonstrating that you can get a pretty good overhead view of a baby. This helps with peace of mind while driving. It also hints at how cars will work in the future, maybe showing a live feed of a crib at home or allowing you to hold a quick Skype call from the touchscreen in the backseat. Cars will become much more connected to each other, the surroundings, and other cars. Soon, we’ll be able to have a video chat with another driver, maybe someone who is part of a road trip convoy to a family vacation.

For now, the internal monitoring worked great — I liked how simple the controls were, letting the driver use them without fumbling around. It’s one step forward for connected cars.

No, you’re not going to buy a minivan. We get that. You’re aware of the minivan’s superior packaging and value proposition vis-à-vis any three-row crossover. You’d totally drive a minivan (you’re not one of those people whose ego is so precious that you’d be embarrassed to be seen behind the wheel of an Odyssey), but you truly need one of these jacked-up wagons wrapped in cladding like so much bacon around a sirloin. Because, as we understand it, you have children to take to summer camp. READ MORE ››

If you’ve found yourself in a family way, there are few vehicles as ingeniously helpful to parents as a minivan. Sure, they’ve lost some luster since buyers started rebelling and escaping to crossovers, but the stylish Chrysler Pacifica goes a long way toward dispelling the van’s stodgy image. Innovative disappearing seats, class-leading infotainment, and an available plug-in hybrid powertrain set it apart from its rivals. With a brilliantly flexible interior layout and a long list of available safety features, modern amenities, and thoughtful touches, the Pacifica is ideal for families—or for anyone wanting a cavernous, comfortable, and highly capable conveyance—which is why it earned a 10Best nod for 2017. Pay TV network Epix goes in-car with the new Honda Odyssey minivan https://briefnews.eu/pay-tv-network-epix-goes-in-car-with-the-new-honda-odyssey-minivan/ https://briefnews.eu/pay-tv-network-epix-goes-in-car-with-the-new-honda-odyssey-minivan/#respond Wed, 07 Jun 2017 12:42:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pay-tv-network-epix-goes-in-car-with-the-new-honda-odyssey-minivan/

In-car entertainment systems have become much more sophisticated with the dawn of the connected car, with the likes of Spotify now integrated into many vehicles, while Google recently revealed it was developing a version of Android specifically for cars that works without the need of a smartphone.

Put simply, cars are fast becoming the new battleground for technology and entertainment companies to gain a foothold to sell their respective services.

One notable omission from current in-car entertainment systems is video — that is, mainstream visual entertainment services hardwired into the very fabric of the vehicle. There is of course good reason for that, one of them being that drivers shouldn’t be distracted while navigating busy thoroughfares. But pay TV network Epix has today provided some details around its video streaming app that’s being integrated into the 2018 Honda Odyssey.

Honda’s upgraded fifth-generation minivan was announced earlier this year, and we already knew all about its on-board infotainment system and 10.2″ rear-entertainment screen that swings down from the roof, capable of screening content from the car’s built-in Blu-ray player and any device plugged into the HDMI port.

While it is already possible to stream anything you like in any car through a smartphone or tablet, or in some vehicles by tapping the built-in HDMI and USB ports to hook your Chromecast up, a bona fide cable TV network built into the automobile’s fabric represents a minor milestone for the connected car revolution.

MGM-owned Epix is making its slate of subscription-based movies and shows available to those sitting in the second and third rows of the Honda Odyssey, which is perfectly in line with the “family focused” facet of the car. Those hour-long journeys to soccer practice or family road-trips suddenly get a lot easier with the likes of Epix and PBS Kids — which has also been announced previously for the new Honda Odyssey — onboard.

Above: Honda Odyssey (2018)

“As vehicles evolve to become the ultimate mobile device, we are pleased to work with Honda to develop new entertainment experiences for second and third-row passengers and pioneer this next chapter of streaming video and true TV everywhere,” noted Epix CEO and president Mark Greenberg.

Honda riders have access to around 2,000 movies and shows from this library, as well as four live linear channels, and the ability to “queue” content — this is particularly useful for parents who don’t want to be fiddling around finding new shows to put on while driving at 80mph. Rear-seat passengers are also able to control their entertainment without relying on those up front.

Additionally, if a driver needs silence, the kids in the back can connect to the system via wireless headphones, or the driver can simply turn off their front-row speakers to minimize the racket. The Honda actually comes with a number of neat new features to enable front-to-back communications, including CabinWatch and CabinTalk which not only lets those in the front observe rear-based passengers through their dashboard screen, but also talk to them through a built-in microphone. Even if the kids in the back are wearing wireless headphones, the audio from the screen is muted whenever the mic is activated.

Moving forward, Epix said that it has a “deep roadmap of innovative features” coming up, including the ability to download content to the Honda entertainment system using “other mobile devices in and out of vehicles,” according to Epix chief digital officer, Jon Dakss. “We’re also tracking the rapid technological advances in the autonomous vehicle space as we believe they will create extraordinary new ways for people to access premium content while they travel,” he added.

Costing $ 9.99 per month, Epix is available through games consoles, smatphones, tablets, smart TVs, set-top boxes, and now connected cars.
