CBS All Access is gift-wrapping a fresh Stephen King adaptation for you this holiday season. The streamer’s hotly anticipated new take on The Stand will debut on Thursday, Dec. 17, TVLine has learned. New installments of the nine-episode limited series will then air weekly each Thursday. Based on King’s bestselling novel, The Stand centers on a battle between good and evil in a post-apocalyptic world, with the elderly Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and a small group of survivors going up against the villainous Randall Flagg, aka The Dark Man, played by Alexander Skarsgård. King himself will write the ninth and final episode, including a new coda not found in the original novel. (The Stand was previously adapted into a 1994 ABC miniseries starring Gary Sinise.) “During the two years we spent making The Stand, we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” showrunner Benjamin Cavell (SEAL Team, Justified) said in a statement. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades. We’re so proud of this show and its attempt to find meaning and hope in the most uncertain of times. We can’t wait to share it with the world.” Goldberg and Skarsgård will be joined by an ensemble cast including Dead to Me‘s James Marsden (as Stu Redman), Amber Heard (as Nadine Cross), Odessa Young (as Frannie Goldsmith), Henry Zaga (as Nick Andros), Arrow‘s Katherine McNamara (as Julie Lawry) and freshly minted Emmy nominee Jovan Adepo (as Larry Underwood). Oscar winner Russell Crowe is nearly unrecognizable in The Loudest Voice, Showtime’s limited series based on the life of the late, disgraced Roger Ailes. The seven-part drama, which premiered Sunday, chronicles Ailes’ career as the founder of conservative news empire Fox News Channel, from his days as a right-wing media juggernaut, to his eventual fall from grace after a series of sexual harassment allegations. After opening on Ailes’ lifeless body upon his death in 2017, we journey back to 1995, following his departure from CNBC. Ailes had been terminated following a human resources investigation, and we catch up with him as he meets at the residence of General Electric CEO Jack Welch to convince his former boss to loosen the terms of his noncompete agreement. This paves the way for Ailes to accept an offer from News Corp to create Fox News. Shortly after his CNBC exit, Ailes joins News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch (The Theory of Everything‘s Simon McBurney) at a press conference to announce the soon-to-be competitor to CNN and the fledgling MSNBC. The rest of the episode focuses on the 12 months leading up to Fox News’ launch on Oct. 7, 1996. At a meeting of Fox News execs to discuss the network’s programming plan, Ailes advises that the network go niche and appeal solely to conservatives. “Right now in America, 60 percent of the people think that the media is negative — that it’s full of lies, full of bias, full of crap,” he says. “We’re just gonna give the people what they want: a positive message — an American message — wrapped up in a conservative viewpoint.” Crowe as Ailes, Boyd as Collier and MacFarlane as Lewis Over the next few weeks, Ailes brings in some of his former cohorts, including Bryan Lewis (The Orville’s Seth MacFarlane), CNBC’s VP of Public Relations, and Chet Collier (Sharp Objects‘ Guy Boyd), CNBC Senior VP. He also sets up a rather informal meeting with former Bush Sr. campaign staffer, Laurie Luhn (Peaky Blinders‘ Annabelle Wallis), who years later would accuse him of sexual abuse. During their get-together, Ailes greets Luhn with a kiss. He later says to her, “I do like you in a pearl necklace.” His intimidating offer to come work for Fox News’ D.C. bureau is intercut with footage of them going back up to her hotel room. Months later, we see Ailes interview a young brunette in his office, behind closed doors. Her name is Chloe. He comes out from behind his desk, approaches her and tells her to twirl for him. He puts his hands all over her — first her arms, then her waist, and finally her face. At one point, his fingers touch her lips. “How do you get on with your dad?” he asks. The scene ends there. While it’d be years before Ailes’ sexual misconduct caught up to him, we do see instances of him being reprimanded for other inappropriate behavior. Months ahead of the network’s launch, Ailes verbally berates a female reporter in the control room. After she quits, Murdoch calls Ailes up to his office and issues a warning. Ailes, however, thinks he’s invincible. “If I don’t tell you about a problem, then it’s not your problem,” he says to Murdoch. The episode’s climax comes when Ailes calls in all Fox News employees to attend a pre-launch meeting at four — yes, four — in the morning. It’s two weeks before the big day, and the entire operation is a mess. He gets into a screaming match with exec VP Ian Rae, and fires a random employee on the spot. Born from his anger is a rally call. He waxes on about their mission to create a conservative news network that lets the “forgotten American” know “that their voice can, and will be heard… We’ll give them a vision of the world the way it really is, and the way they want it to be.” Their goal is to “reclaim the real America,” he says. “We challenge the existing agenda and we become the loudest voice.” Darragh as Hannity and Miller as Tilson Other key figures in the first hour include Elizabeth Tilson, onetime CNBC VP of Programming and Ailes’ then-girlfriend, whom he’d marry in 1998. Also featured are Ailes’ executive assistant Judy Laterza (Halt and Catch Fire’s Aleksa Palladino) and Sean Hannity (The Path‘s Patch Darragh), a young radio shock-jock plucked from Atlanta. Additionally, the episode makes mention of Bill O’Reilly (at one point, Collier alerts Ailes that O’Reilly “lost another producer this morning” due to his infamous temperament), and Hannity’s onetime cohost, the late Alan Colmes. Notably missing is Gretchen Carlson, who would not make her Fox News debut until 2005. (Her portrayer, Naomi Watts, first shows up in Episode 3.) What did you think of The Loudest Voice? Roger Ailes, the man responsible for turning Fox News into a media empire, died in 2017, and Hollywood wasted no time developing takes on his scandal-laden downfall. Annapurna Pictures recently parted ways with a star-studded movie on the subject, but today, Showtime’s Roger Ailes TV show cast just grew by four members.
Sienna Miller (Layer Cake, Lost City of Z), Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, The Orville), Simon McBurney (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), and Annabelle Wallis (The Mummy, The Conjuring) have come on board, joining the previously-announced Russell Crowe, who is playing the role of Ailes, and Naomi Watts, who is playing anchor Gretchen Carlson. Find out who each of these actors will play in the upcoming series below.
Showtime’s untitled limited series is based on Gabriel Sherman‘s book The Loudest Voice in the Room, which explores how Ailes became the de facto leader of the Republican party and tracks the last decade of his life, including the sexual harassment scandals that brought his long reign at Fox News to an ignominious end.
The press release has a detailed description of the people these new cast members will play:
Miller will portray former NBC news producer Elizabeth ‘Beth” Ailes, who married Roger, 22 years her senior, in 1998, shortly after the founding of Fox News. Following their marriage, Beth devoted herself to raising their son Zachary as well as serving as the editor of the Putnam County News & Recorder newspaper in their home of Garrison, NY. Beth was a steadfast champion of Roger until his death in 2017 and, to this day, refutes any charge that her husband was less than innocent.
MacFarlane will take on the role of Brian Lewis, Fox News’ public relations chief for over 17 years and Ailes’ closest confidante and supporter. Lewis spent his career promoting and protecting Ailes until the media machine turned against Lewis and ended his career.
McBurney will play the role of legendary media magnate, Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch built his father’s Australian newspaper company into a worldwide media empire. But his single greatest media move might have been hiring Roger Ailes to run Fox News, who, against all odds, created a conservative cable news network from the ground up and built it into a multi-billion dollar profit machine.
Wallis will play Laurie Luhn, a volunteer who, under Ailes’ mentorship, rose to head of booking at Fox News. Giving into Ailes’ growing demands, she began a long abusive relationship with him that impacted the rest of her life.
Sherman co-wrote the first episode of the show with Tom McCarthy, the Oscar-winning writer of Spotlight. Production starts next month in New York, and Emmy-nominated director Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale) is set to direct the first two episodes.

Bill Skarsgard terrified audiences in the box office horror hit that the IT movie last September.
But before he took on Pennywise, Tim Curry played the evil clown in the original 1990 miniseries.
Terrifying a generation of children, the TV adaptation of Stephen King’s classic has gained a cult status.
And now a new documentary is arriving this summer to revisit IT almost 30 years later.

This includes with Curry himself and others stars like Seth Green.
Plus hundreds of never-before-seen production photos and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.

In 2013, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling released a book called The Cuckoo’s Calling under the pseudonym “Robert Galbraith.” It was the first in a series of crime novels following the adventures of a private investigator named Cormoran Strike, a former member of the Royal Military Police, and now Cinemax has adapted the first three novels into a miniseries. Watch the first C.B. Strike trailer below.
The first book sees Cormoran Strike (what a name) teaming up with a female partner and investigating the apparent suicide of a model, and the show doesn’t appear to do much to differentiate itself from its contemporaries like Sherlock and Luther. But with procedurals like this, it’s often not as much about the plots as spending time with the characters, so we’ll see how well the idea is executed when it comes to the small screen Stateside this summer.
All of the episodes have already played in the U.K. on BBC One last summer, and at the time, The Telegraph compared one of its episodes to the works of Agatha Christie and another to True Detective and David Fincher’s Seven.
If you’re interested in checking it out, the first episode debuts on Friday, June 1, 2018 on Cinemax. New episodes will follow each Friday; the show kicks off with three one-hour episodes that cover the first book in the trilogy, and the remaining two books – The Silkworm and Career of Evil – will be covered in two episodes each, bringing the total number of miniseries episodes to seven. But there’s always the opportunity for more, since Rowling reportedly wants to write at least ten more books in the series. Lead actors Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger have said they’re interested in returning, but they’ll wait for Rowling to publish another book before reprising their roles again.
Here’s the official breakdown:
C.B. STRIKE is based on the bestselling crime novels written by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Starring Tom Burke (“Only God Forgives”) and Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”), the story centers on Strike, a war veteran turned private detective, operating out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street. Although wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as a military police investigator prove crucial in solving three complex cases that have baffled the police.
C.B. STRIKE is a CINEMAX Miniseries presentation in association with BBC; a Bronte Film and Television production; “The Cuckoo’s Calling” executive produced by Ben Richards, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and J.K. Rowling; “Career of Evil” and “The Silkworm” executive produced by Tom Edge, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and J.K. Rowling.

Jemele Hill is leaving her position as co-anchor of ESPN’s Sportscenter — but President Trump isn’t to blame.
Last fall, Hill was suspended from her position for two weeks after she tweeted that POTUS is a “white supremacist”. The tweet caught the attention of the White House, who said that her actions were a “fireable offense.”
Hill, though, made clear on Twitter that her exit — to join ESPN’s sports/social/cultural issues site, The Undefeated, was purely her choice.
It is unclear whether ESPN will replace her co-host position alongside Michael Smith.

The Boston public access station WGBH has partnered with PBS for another short series in its long-running Nova family of programs. Nova Wonder will follow three researchers exploring big scientific mysteries. The first of the miniseries’ six episodes airs on PBS on Wednesday, April 28th, with a new one every week.
Each episode tackles a different complex question: Do animals have a secret language? Which AI technologies could surpass human abilities? How ethical is it to grow life in a lab? The show will go deep in the sea and peer into outer space to find answers.
But more notable is the refreshingly young and diverse trio of hosts who practice leading scientific methods and technologies. mathematician and statistician Talithia Williams uses data models to analyze environmental and human biological info, while computer scientist Rana el Kaliouby specializes in emotion recognition tech and neuroscientist André Fenton specializes in the biology of memory.
“What is so unique about NOVA Wonders—and what distinguishes it from the original NOVA series—is the emphasis on unanswered questions,” said Julia Cort, Executive Producer, NOVA Wonders. “We’re riding along with researchers who are pushing the envelope on our knowledge about the universe and ourselves. They don’t have all the answers, but the thrill is in the journey and trying to solve a mystery for the very first time.”

The events leading up to 9/11 will soon be dramatized in Hulu’s new miniseries The Looming Tower. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning non-fiction book by Lawrence Wright, the series will follow the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the 1990s, and how a rivalry between the FBI and CIA may have inadvertently contributed to a failure to prevent the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
A new The Looming Tower first look offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the show.
Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 is being brought to life by Hulu in 2018. The new miniseries adaptation comes from producer Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief) and features an impressive cast that includes Tahar Rahim, Jeff Daniels, Peter Sarsgaard, Wrenn Schmidt, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bill Camp, and Alec Baldwin. A new The Looming Tower first look reveals tense footage from the miniseries, as well as behind-the-scenes interviews with cast and crew.
This looks very promising, and the cast – particularly folks like Daniels, Sarsgaard, Stuhlbarg – ensure that there will be plenty of great acting on display. According to USA Today, The Looming Tower “opens in 1998, shortly before terrorists bomb two U.S. embassies in Africa, and eventually climaxes with the Sept. 11 attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.” Here’s the official synopsis:
Based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning book, The Looming Tower traces the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s and how the rivalry between the FBI and CIA during that time may have inadvertently set the path for the tragedy of 9/11. The series follows members of the I-49 Squad in New York and Alec Station in Washington, D.C., the counter-terrorism divisions of the FBI and CIA, respectively, as they travel the world fighting for ownership of information while seemingly working toward the same goal – trying to prevent an imminent attack on U.S. soil.
In writing the book that inspired the series, Wright said, “I wanted to understand who these people were and why they had attacked us – the most elemental question that we were all asking after 9/11. The level of our cultural ignorance is hard to overstate, even my own. Even though I had spent time in the Middle East…I still was left with many riddles that I needed to unscramble. Originally my first goal was how am I going to write about it, where do I start, and what kind of book would it be? I felt instinctively that it had to be about individuals, had to have certain stories that would personalize this massive tragedy and help us understand it through their lives.”
The Looming Tower will debut on Hulu on February 28, 2018.

Even though Agent Carter’s no longer on the case, Hayley Atwell is still getting to the bottom of things.
Take the newly released trailer for Starz’s adaptation of Howards End, E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel about three families in turn-of-the-century England. Marvel’s Agent Carter alum Atwell plays Margaret Schlegel, an intelligent and independent sort who lives with her sister Helen (played by The Catch‘s Philippa Coulthard) and brother Tibby (BlackMirror‘s Alex Lawther) and who — among other intrigues — becomes involved in drama surrounding the widowed Henry Wilcox (RipperStreet‘s Matthew Macfadyen).
Stan Lee is becoming a casualty of his own creation.
Disney XD is preparing to roll out a series of shorts titled (deep breath…) LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Guardians of the Galaxy: The Thanos Threat, the first of which — in keeping with Marvel tradition — features a special appearance by the comic-book guru.
