Minecraft: Story Mode is the final product released from developer TellTale Games before closing down. Streaming service Netflix teased Minecraft: Story Mode with this statement: “Take control of an adventure set in the Minecraft universe. The future of the world is at stake, and your decisions shape the story – so choose wisely!”

Minecraft: Story Mode allows viewers to decide how the story progresses across its five episodes.

The first three are already out, meaning you can stream them at your leisure now.

Minecraft: Story Mode is not to be confused with the popular game, because character’s cannot be controlled.

You will need to use the official app from Google Play to watch Minecraft: Story Mode with an Android device.

Minecraft: Story Mode is rated PEGI 12, meaning it is targeted for family friendly audiences.

The Netflix show was created by Telltale Games, in collaboration with Minecraft creators, Mojang.

Minecraft: Story Mode features the voices of Patton Oswalt, Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman.

Released in 2011, Minecraft is a sandbox video game, meaning players have the ability to create, modify, or destroy their environment.

Minecraft allows players to build with a variety of different blocks in a 3D procedurally generated world, requiring creativity from players.

Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat.

Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode, creative mode, adventure mode and hardcore mode.

Xbox fans have a lot of news and announcements to look forward to this weekend as Microsoft’s X018 event is underway in Mexico City. Tomorrow at 4:00 PM EST, X018 will host a special two-hour live edition of Inside Xbox, the monthly show covering all things Xbox.

Microsoft is gearing up for the holiday season by making announcements about some of its biggest Xbox titles including, Crackdown 3, Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and Forza Horizon 4. Several guests will also make appearances, such as head of Xbox Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Matt Booty and Minecraft studio head Helen Chiang. Also on the docket for tonight’s show is the announcement of over a dozen new games for Xbox Game Pass.

Fans can snag some in-game goodies for Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4 if they watch on the Xbox Mixer channel while logged into their Microsoft account. The broadcast can also be seen on Twitch, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Were you eagerly awaiting Minecraft movie’s May 2019 release? You’ll need to make a change of plans. Director and co-writer Rob McElhenney has informed TheWrap that the originally slated debut is “not happening” as he’s leaving the project. It’s not clear why he’s departing or who will replace him as director. However, Warner Bros. is asking Aaron and Adam Nee (both working on Masters of the Universe) to draft a new script.

The production shuffle is bound to create significant delays for the movie. It doesn’t look good for Microsoft’s Minecraft strategy, for that matter. While the company certainly wasn’t depending on the movie for its bottom line, it announced the 2019 premiere date two years ago — if it had any movie tie-in plans, they’ve just been thrown out the window. There’s also a real concern that interest in Minecraft might fade by the time the movie is ready (assuming no other setbacks), potentially dampening its chances at the box office. That doesn’t appear to be happening any time soon, but the clock is ticking.

Minecraft players downloaded 239,062 pieces of content from the Minecraft Marketplace in January. The marketplace is available in the unified Bedrock version of Minecraft on Windows 10, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and mobile (Bedrock comes to Switch later this year), and it features products made by both The Minecraft Team and community developers. Players can earn this content through in-game currency, but they can also spend real money, and a portion of those revenues go to the people who made the content.

Every month on GamesBeat, I dive into the shop to see what is selling. You can take a look at past results right here. In January, we saw a lot of returning favorites make the list like Blockception’s Whiterock Castle and Noxcrew’s Summer Minigame Festival. The Minecraft audience is probably ready for something new, and we could see creators capitalize on that in February with releases like the new City Life world pack from PixelHeads. For now, however, fantasy worlds and licensed mash-up packs from The Minecraft Team are still dominating.

Millions of kids around the world play Minecraft, and it didn’t take long for adults to notice something: It has educational value. With Microsoft’s MinecraftEdu leading the way, more schools are using Minecraft in classrooms, having their kids experiment with science and math on the screen, or encouraging them to build historical settings or scenes from books. But there is one aspect of Minecraft education that I think can be discussed more: Minecraft and literacy.

Tech writer Clive Thompson wrote in Wired, “Games, it seems, can motivate kids to read—and to read way above their level. This is what Constance Steinkuehler, a games researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, discovered. She asked middle and high school students who were struggling readers (one 11th-grade student read at a 6th-grade level) to choose a game topic they were interested in, and then she picked texts from game sites for them to read—some as difficult as first-year-college language. The kids devoured them with no help and nearly perfect accuracy.”

Minecraft doesn’t have a lot of reading in it (unless you mod the game to make it that way), but the internet and bookstores show a booming display of Minecraft-related websites and books. Kids can look up how to brew a potion online or get these details from a nonfiction how-to book. At the same time, novels and comic books star Minecraft characters or take place within the game.

My experience as an author

I write adventure novels for children 7-12 that take place as if Minecraft is real, and I’ve seen the way it lights up kids who usually would rather be in front of the console than have a book under their nose. I talk with schools or libraries, either in person or through Skype, showing them how I started writing at a young age and how I turned that into my career. The first thing I say to a classroom is usually, “Who here likes Minecraft?” Nearly all the hands go up. When I tell them I write books about an 11-year-old boy who lives in Minecraft, they want to read it. They demand to read it. I hear from parents all the time who say, “My child doesn’t like to read, but they can’t put your books down.” The Minecraft angle is what grabs them in the first place, and then in my books they’ll find fast-paced action/adventure, chapter cliffhangers, plot twists, and characters who discuss real issues, like the fear of going to a new school or of being cyberbullied.

I see the power of literacy when we can get kids excited about reading. And I remember being a kid and being told what books to read by teachers and other well-wishing adults, and I remember quite a few of those pre-selected books did not interest me, even though I loved to read. The issue is that sometimes the kids are being told what they’d like to read, rather than asking them what they like and then finding books to fit that. I see kids who find a book that clicks with them, and they think, “This is reading? But this is fun!” They’ll move on to more books, maybe even the books the adults originally recommended, but then it’s in the kids’ hands and they feel empowered by their reading ability and feel connected with certain characters and stories.

Indeed, it was a love of stories that made me good at spelling, not spelling tests – I learned to spell better from reading and writing than I did from any quizzes. It was a love of reading and writing that helped me through hard times, that let me know I wasn’t alone. A love of reading can bridge communities, can help in education, can help in careers, can help in just general passion for life.

The power of Minecraft

I’m not the only author making books for Minecrafters, nor is Minecraft the only video game out there with books. For kids who are into video games but hesitate about books, this can be a way to reach them, if we can find their interests. Beyond video games, whatever their interest is, there will be books to match up with them. So when I hear about teachers using Minecraft in the classroom, I like to talk to them about going beyond math and science and using literacy as another angle to gaming education. I also remember being in elementary school and getting writing assignments, and how the more specific the assignment, the less well I did in it. I would go home and write, but in school, I often froze up.

But if teachers encourage kids to write about what interests them (again, Minecraft or whatever else) they might find their students opening up. So many of them are already creating worlds on the screen, so why not create some worlds on the page as well? Because Minecraft encourages imagination, education around it ought to encourage imagination too. It’s by thinking outside the box (no pun intended for this boxy video game world) that people make new discoveries and come up with new, better ideas. Why not use Minecraft however it can be used to encourage this?

  • Microsoft has appointed “Minecraft” leader Matt Booty to new corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, the firm’s internal group overseeing gaming for Xbox, PC, and mobile.

  • Booty’s job will be to execute Spencer’s strategy within the six studios, as part of a company-wide effort to juice up its global gaming strength.

Microsoft has named Matt Booty the new corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, the division that incorporates Xbox and all of its gaming efforts.

As VentureBeat first reported, Booty was one of the key people in Microsoft’s “Minecraft” business, and his promotion is crucial to the company’s overall gaming strategy and ambition.

Back in September, CEO Satya Nadella appointed previous Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer as an executive VP in the company’s top board, alongside the people overseeing Windows 10, the Surface brand, the Office 365 suite, and more.

This move had left the position vacant, and Booty is now stepping up to fill in. VentureBeat reports that executives said that this sets in motion a “clear succession plan” for the firm’s gaming business.

Spencer, who reports directly to Nadella, will remain in charge of the overall gaming strategy for the company, while Booty — who reports to Spencer — will have to execute that strategy with the help of all the other studios’ heads, who will now report to him.

Booty’s team includes first-party development houses like 343 Industries, The Coalition, Mojang, Rare, Turn 10 Studios, and Global Publishing. Spencer said that Booty will be in charge of managing and expanding those operations, as part of a larger company plan to devote more resources to its gaming arm.

“I wanted to make sure we had the right organization in place to deliver on our content goals. With that, I made the decision that I wanted to anoint a leader of our Microsoft Studios organization, which if you’ve tracked it, I’ve had the leaders of our individual franchises reporting to me for the last three and a half years,” Spencer told VentureBeat.

“That’s been great in driving our all-up strategy and getting us to the point where Satya was willing and eager to make the investment in gaming that he’s made, but it’s also become very clear to me that we’re going to invest more in content, which we are doing, and that a unified studios leadership organization was going to be critical to our long-term success.”

The Minecraft team had a bunch of news at their MineCon Earth convention, but the biggest news may be what’s not happening. Mojang and Microsoft have delayed the launches of both the Super Duper Graphics Pack and cross-platform Switch multiplayer to sometime in 2018. They’re not elaborating on the reasons behind the delay, but in both cases the features simply aren’t finished. More information on the graphics delay is coming “soon,” according to the creators.

Instead, the biggest improvement (beyond the Better Together release) is The Update Acquatic, which refines underwater adventures. There are new water physics (such as buoyancy), dolphins, coral and a water-appropriate weapon (the trident). There’s no release date just yet.

This certainly isn’t going to trigger a crisis for Minecraft players, but it does suggest that the graphics pack and Switch update were more than a little ambitious. It’s going to take a while for the world-building game to grow significantly beyond its roots.

The release last month of the Better Together update for Minecraft brought together Minecraft players on most of the game’s many platforms: the Xbox One, Windows 10, mobile, and VR versions of the game now all use the same engine and can all play together without borders. Servers and content will be accessible from any Better Together platform. Microsoft has also announced that this version of the game will be coming to the Nintendo Switch, and it, too, will be able to join in the cross-platform play.

But one major platform is being left behind: PlayStation 4. Minecraft players on the PlayStation 4 will only be able to play with other PlayStation 4 users. Not because of any technical constraint, but because Sony won’t allow it.

Speaking to Gamespot, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said Sony regards platform lock-in as a way of driving sales and “that reason [for blocking cross-platform play] is not going away.” Spencer doesn’t hold out much hope for things changing, either: “I’m never going to call anything a lost cause, but I think some of the fundamental reasons and certain scenarios—they’re not really going away.”
