Cahill is believed to have flown to England to finalise his next move over the weekend.

As per Cahill’s trademark headers, the timing is impeccable – coming just days after the appointment of Bert van Marwijk as Socceroos coach while Millwall are beset by an attacking injury crisis.

It’s understood that Cahill had several options but has opted to return to the club where he broke into professional football 20 years ago.

The Socceroos’ record scorer will now give himself a chance of making the squad for the March friendlies against Norway and Colombia in Europe.

Cahill has stayed in regular contact with and worked closely with FFA’s conditioning staff, while van Marwijk well aware of Cahill’s qualities having coached Saudi Arabia in the same qualifying group.

As reported by The Daily Telegraph earlier this month, a fairytale return to Millwall has always seemed likely for Cahill despite the English Championship club publicly playing down the prospect of a deal.

Millwall manager Neil Harris, who was Cahill’s teammate at the club from 1998-2004, confirmed that they were in touch and his attacking stocks needed bolstering.

“I spoke to Timmy again, about various things to be honest,” Harris said.

“There’s still dialogue between me and Tim in terms of that, but that’s as far as it is at the moment.

“It’s happened where we have continuously missed a player in an attacking position.

“We’ve been trying to bring in players all window and it’s tough. I don’t think people really understand how difficult January is. It’s by far the most frustrating time, transfer-wise, since I’ve been in charge.

“We’ve been extremely patient, it’s like a game of poker. Good players are hard to come by.”

Cahill, 38, is a free agent after terminating his contract with Melbourne City seven weeks ago, but has been on the lookout for a club in a desperate bid to play in his fourth World Cup.

He is a fan favourite at the Den and was a huge part of the team that won the League One title in 2001 and made the 2004 FA Cup final.

Cahill spent time in Sydney and Byron Bay, where he continued to work on his fitness at his brother’s gym, before returning to Melbourne for his Foxtel Ambitions Tour, a search for young footballers with the chance to win places at his football academy.

The Hamburg loanee, out of form and out of favour since November, bagged a brace in the thriller at Elland Road as Leeds came from behind only to throw away all three points late on.

Christiansen claims Lasogga “couldn’t walk” with the score at 3-2 and decided to replace him with defender Conor Shaughnessy in the 84th minute. 

But the switch backfired as Millwall secured the win thanks to late goals from Tom Elliott and Jed Wallace. 

When asked if he’d have liked to have Lasogga on the pitch for the closing stages, Christiansen said: “Yes but I had the idea of taking him out, he was finished, he couldn’t walk if you see the efforts that he did.

“My intention was also to keep or leave Roofey inside but he came to me – ‘are you going to make a change, yes? I cannot more’.

“And I appreciate a player who is exhausted because he cannot more, that means he has given everything and we made some changes.

“The most important was of course in the half time, we played with three at the back and after Pablo to come in in the middle to make our midfield a little bit stronger, especially with the direct play.”

Aiden O’Brien fired ahead on 18 minutes before skipper Liam Cooper saw red in the 37th minute for a late tackle.

Lee Gregory doubled the Lions’ lead five minutes later, which prompted Christiansen to make a switch in the midfield, replacing Ronaldo Vieira with Matthew Pennington.  

Discussing the substitution, Christiansen said: “I think we were not as good as we should in that position.

“As I said we didn’t take the second balls and when the defenders had to go to the challenge, the ball falls somewhere and this is where we needed the team to be close, to pick up these balls.”

Leeds blitzed Millwall after the break thanks to Lasogga’s two goals and Kemar Roofe’s effort before the Lions’ late show to secure the win.

The 38-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Melbourne City last month and desperate for regular football with the Socceroos’ opening fixture of the World Cup against France exactly five months away.

Cahill made 242 appearances for the Lions and scored 57 goals in an eight-year spell before signing for Everton following the 2004 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

Millwall, who are currently in 16th position on the Championship table and managed by Cahill’s former teammate Neil Harris, have a long association with Australian players but boast one of the lowest playing budgets in the division.

Socceroos left-back James Meredith and former Newcastle Jets striker Kristian Brymora are currently on their books while Lucas Neill, Kevin Muscat and Dave Mitchell have all played for the southeast London side.

However, the Lions have denied that a deal has been offered to the Socceroos’ record goalscorer, who has not kicked a ball since coming on as a late substitute in City’s 2-1 A-League win over Newcastle on December 2.

“There’s absolutely nothing in the rumours at all,” a club official said.

A brave football fan shouted “f*** you, I’m Millwall” as he gallantly attempted to fend off terrorists at a restaurant in London’s Borough Market during Saturday’s attack in the city that claimed the lives of seven people.

Millwall fan Roy Larner, 47, received horrific stab wounds while trying to fight off three knifemen as they burst into the Black & Blue restaurant intent on attacking revellers, earning him the nickname “The Lion of London Bridge” – a nod to his bravery and also the nickname of his club.

Larner, from Peckham, southeast London, is currently recuperating in St. Thomas’s hospital intensive care unit in central London, where he recounted to British newspaper the Sun the moment the group smashed the doors of the eatery and began their horrific attack.

“They had these long knives and started shouting about Allah. Then it was, ‘Islam, Islam, Islam’,” Larner said.  

“Like an idiot, I shouted back at them. I thought, ‘I need to take the p* out of these b******s’. I took a few steps towards them and said, ‘F* you, I’m Millwall’. So they started attacking me.

“I stood in front of them trying to fight them off. Everyone else ran to the back. I was on my own against all three of them, that’s why I got hurt so much.

“They were saying, ‘Islam, Islam!’. I said again, ‘F*** you, I’m Millwall!’ It was the worst thing I could have done as they carried on attacking me.”

The terrorists then left to attack neighboring pubs before police marksmen shot the group dead.

In taking on the murderers with his bare hands, Larner was stabbed and sliced eight times in the back of the head, the chest and both hands.  

Friends visited him in the hospital with an issue of sports magazine ‘Runner’s World’ entitled ‘Learn to Run.’  

A Just Giving page established to raise money for Larner has so far collected £10,990 ($ 14,180), surpassing its initial target of £500 ($ 645).

One of those to visit Larner in hospital was Mick Church, who paid tribute to “a true brave Millwall man through and through who helped so many Saturday now needs help himself” in the comments on the fundraising page.

“I visited Roy today in intensive care. He has lost his glasses and his hands are bandaged up past his elbows,” he wrote.  

“He has 2 10 inch scars on the side of his face and neck and his lung collapsed. Watching him trying to see the mobile phone and use it to answer the call from his daughter was pitiful but we both laughed at the futility of his struggle.”

Wellwishers left messages of praise and support on the page, which was set up by Jayne Jacob who wrote: “I have been overwhelmed with the support & love for this brave man. All the best to everyone.”  

“What a true Gent, as a South East Londoner myself I take great comfort in knowing that people like you are on the streets, I wish you a speedy recovery and I too would Love to shake your hand if our paths ever cross,” Katy Moss wrote.

Professional boxer Johnny Garton, a friend of Larner’s, tweeted: “Sad to hear the news that a friend of mine Roy Larner was stabbed a number of times in last nights attack Hope you make a full recovery mate.”

A petition has also been set up to award Larner the George Cross, the highest civilian award for “acts of the greatest heroism and bravery in circumstances of extreme danger.”

The appeal has gained 2,867 signatures from its 5,000 target so far.

Millwall face-off against Scunthorpe United for the League One play-off semi-final first leg tonight.

This is the second consecutive season that sees Millwall compete in the League One play-offs, following the team’s 2015/16 defeat to Barnsley in the final.

The side’s striker Lee Gregory is one of a number of players who is set to be assessed ahead of tonight’s match after the squad was affected by illness.

The striker will be monitored after being forced off on Sunday due to illness.

Lions boss Neil Harris has no new injury or suspension worries aside from the sickness bug.

Meanwhile, Scunthorpe United defender Scott Wiseman is doubtful to make an appearance after he missed the team’s win over Coventry City last weekend.

Speaking to BBC Radio London, Millwall manager Neil Harris said: “We’re in [the play-offs], we’re in there on merit, we’ve had a really good year so far, it’s now about going one stage better than last year.

“The fans will be hugely important, they always are.

“A play-off game at the Den, under lights on a Thursday evening, they’re going to come in great spirit, in big numbers and make an intimidating atmosphere.

“My players will feed off that. We have to be one as a team and a fan base.”

Scunthorpe United boss Graham Alexander said: “We haven’t gone out to get a draw all season and that won’t be the case on Thursday.

“I think the play-offs are fantastic. It keeps the season alive for everybody and we’re delighted to be involved.

“Millwall is an environment where you get challenged but the biggest challenge is the team.

“The priority is just to win the tie after 180 minutes. We’ve shown this season that we can take a punch on the chin, get back up and win the fight. It’s about keeping our composure.”

Only champions Sheffield United has scored more goals than Scunthorpe in League One this season.
