  • 22 GOP state governors urged Biden to withdraw his student-loan forgiveness plan.
  • The White House just released state-by-state data on how many borrowers could be eligible for relief.
  • Millions of borrowers would likely qualify for the debt cancellation in the 22 GOP-led states.

Newly released data revealed the benefits of President Joe Biden's student-loan forgiveness plan could be far-reaching in the Republican-led states trying to block the policy.

Just over a month after Biden announced up to $ 20,000 in student-debt relief for federal borrowers making under $ 125,000 a year, the White House on Tuesday released state-by-state estimates on how many borrowers could be eligible for the relief. In 11 states, over 1 million borrowers are projected to be eligible for the loan forgiveness, per the data, with California leading the list at 3.5 million borrowers.

"I've always maintained that data drives everything, and that's why this announcement today, and this data release, is just so essential," Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley said during a Tuesday press call. "I'll be honest, I was emotional walking through these numbers with my team, recognizing that behind every number, there is a person, there's a family, there's a story here."

But some Republican politicians might not see it quite that way. On September 12, 22 GOP governors sent a letter to Biden urging him to "withdraw your student loan plan immediately," arguing that the policy is costly, illegal, and unfair to those who already paid off their loans.

"For many borrowers, they worked hard, made sacrifices, and paid off their debt. For many others, they chose hard work and a paycheck rather than more school and a loan. Americans who did not choose to take out student loans themselves should certainly not be forced to pay for the student loans of others," they wrote.

Here's how many student-loan borrowers would benefit from Biden's debt relief in each of those 22 states:

An Education Department official told reporters on Tuesday that the administration arrived at those estimates by using "commonly employed statistical techniques" to estimate borrowers' income, along with census data that has detailed information on income for specific groups of people.

Since Biden announced his relief, Republicans have been pushing back on the policy — some have even expressed intent to block the loan forgiveness in court. But the Biden administration maintains it has the legal standing to carry out this one-time blanket relief and is moving forward with implementation, planning to make an application for relief available in early October.

"The analysis we are releasing today tells us that President Biden's debt relief plan will touch working families in every corner of the state of the country, in red states and blue states and everywhere in between, states and big cities, sprawling suburbs, tribal lands and remote rural towns," Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal told reporters. "Nearly 20 million borrowers will have their entire balances discharged, others will benefit from lower balances and lower payments."

Jimmy 'MrBeast' Donaldson.

  • Patreon was in talks with Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson earlier this year, Insider has learned.
  • The deal, which would see the YouTuber creating subscription content, was worth millions but never materialized.
  • News of the negotiations arrives amid layoffs within Patreon's creator partnerships team.

Earlier this year, Patreon had its sights set on onboarding one of the most well-known creators on earth.

The company was in talks with Jimmy Donaldson, known to his millions of followers as MrBeast, for a deal that would see the marquee YouTuber creating subscription content, two former employees told Insider.

One of the former employees said the prospective deal "had enough zeroes to fall in the millions." The second said it could've been valued at as much as $ 10 million.

Ultimately, though, the deal never came to pass. It fell apart by July, according to the second former employee.

A representative for MrBeast declined to comment.

Ellen Satterwhite, Patreon's interim head of communications and US policy lead, told Insider that the company would not comment on personal or sensitive information about specific creators.

News of the negotiations arrives as Patreon announced cuts to its creator partnerships team, which works to onboard and support creators. Patreon founder and CEO Jack Conte wrote in a memo on September 13 that the company's creator partnerships efforts would "take a more scaled approach with a smaller, consolidated team in the US."

All told, the layoffs impacted 80 of roughly 470 staffers across various teams.

While a deal with MrBeast never materialized, other deals that Patreon closed appear to have fallen spectacularly short of expectations. Company documents obtained by Insider show that deals with TikTok megastars Larray and Lil Huddy brought in far less in their first months on the platform than the company projected.

"They saw these deals as experiments to play around with and test certain strategies," the second former employee said. "Apparently, only a few months ago, there was enough money in the bank to spend several million to sign creators with exclusively Gen-Z followings who of course can't that easily spend $ 10 or more per month for exclusive content."

  • Items featured in James Bond films are being auctioned by Christie's in London.
  • Some of the most notable lots are the cars used in the 2021 film "No Time to Die".
  • The Aston Martin DB5 could fetch $ 2.3 million, while a Land Rover could go for almost $ 600,000.

An Aston Martin DB5 expected to fetch about $ 2.3 million in an auction to commemorate the 60th anniversary of James Bond.

The "Sixty Years of James Bond" auction is being conducted by Christie's and is due to start later this month. The last three 007 auctions run by the auction house raised almost $ 7.2 million.

There are items commemorating each of the six actors to have played Bond, including Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.

While costumes, boats and Bond-related getaways are up for grabs, the most eye-catching is a collection of classic cars, mostly from "No Time to Die", including Aston Martins, Jaguars, and Land Rovers.

Bidders will need deep pockets to lump for the cars seen in the film, but there's also an exclusive model replica for the more frugal bidder.

The Aston Martin DB5 that features in the opening sequence of No Time to Die is a key lot at the upcoming auction.

The Queen examines her coronation crown in "The Coronation."

  • Queen Elizabeth left behind a vast collection of jewels, tiaras, and brooches when she passed away on Thursday.
  • Some of the items will remain part of the Crown Jewels on display at the Tower of London.
  • Others are expected to be passed down to King Charles, Camilla, the queen consort, and newly named Princess of Wales Kate Middleton.

When King Charles III inherited a new title upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Thursday, he also likely acquired her extensive jewel, crown, and brooch collection.

Some of these items will remain part of the Crown Jewels, a collection of royal ceremonial objects on public display  at the Tower of London. However, the Queen's private collection — worth millions of US dollars and comprised of family heirlooms, gifts, and items purchased by the monarch herself — is expected to be passed down to members of the Windsor family, starting with King Charles.

"It is likely that she would want to pass on items from her private collection to her loved ones," royal commentator Josh Rom told the New York Post. "The bulk of the collection will pass to Charles — with Camilla as his queen consort — and then Kate, so they may not be left anything big [in the will]."

According to Vanity Fair, the royal collection began during the reign of Queen Victoria in the 1800s, when the former monarch began collecting jewels as the British empire expansion. The collection continued to grow during the reign of Queen Mary, who amassed extravagant pieces during her world travels and through connections with jewelers and world leaders, Vanity Fair reported.

Many of Queen Mary's jewels were gifted to her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, who subsequently loaned out various pieces during her 70 years on the throne. Among them, the Cartier Halo tiara containing 1,000 diamonds, was worn by Kate Middleton at her wedding. Meghan Markle sported the Diamond Bandeau during her nuptials, the New York Post reported.

Rom told the Post that it's likely the Queen will bequeath these crowns to the same family members who borrowed them, but he noted if they were left in her will, the recipients would be required to pay a 40% inheritance tax on them.

Given the value of some of these items, he said it might be in the best interest of the family to leave the items as part of the royal collection.

Trump, who received hundreds of millions of dollars from his father’s real estate empire, calls John Fetterman spoiled: ‘He lived off his parents’ money’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-who-received-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars-from-his-fathers-real-estate-empire-calls-john-fetterman-spoiled-he-lived-off-his-parents-money/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-who-received-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars-from-his-fathers-real-estate-empire-calls-john-fetterman-spoiled-he-lived-off-his-parents-money/#respond Sun, 04 Sep 2022 04:58:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/trump-who-received-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars-from-his-fathers-real-estate-empire-calls-john-fetterman-spoiled-he-lived-off-his-parents-money/ A photo of Donald Trump in a blue suit with a red tie stitched to a photo of John Fetterman in a black hoodie with a microphone
  • Former President Donald Trump attacked Democrat candidate John Fetterman at a Pennsylvania rally.
  • He called Fetterman spoiled and said he "leeched off his parents' money."
  • Trump was in Pennsylvania to support Republicans Dr. Mehmet Oz and Doug Mastriano.

Former President Donald Trump said Democrat candidate Lt. Gov. John Fetterman "is a spoiled and entitled socialist loser who leeched off his parents' money" during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

In 2018, The New York Times debunked Trump's claims that he was a self-made billionaire. The outlet reported Trump received the equivalent of at least $ 413 million from his father's real estate empire, beginning when he was a toddler.

Trump also said Fetterman, who is running against Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz for a seat in the US Senate, "lives on his parents' money" and alleged Fetterman uses drugs.

Fetterman has served as the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania since 2019. Prior to that, he was the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, for 13 years. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Fetterman's parents supported him well into his 40s because he was only earning $ 150 per month during his mayorship. Fetterman has acknowledged this support and now earns $ 217,610 as lieutenant governor.

In response to Trump's comments, Joe Calvello, the director of communications for Fetterman tweeted "more and more lies from Trump and Dr. Oz; another day, but it's the same shit from these two desperate and sad dudes.'

The former president was campaigning for Republicans Oz and Doug Mastriano — a candidate for state governor —  before the November midterm elections.

According to recent polls, Fetterman is ahead of Oz by 8.1 points in the race to represent Pennsylvania in the US Senate.

Saturday's rally was the first one Trump has appeared at since the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago estate on August 8 and discovered more than 10,000 government documents, according to a publicly released inventory.

At the podium, Trump once again decried the search, claiming that the FBI raided the "hopes and dreams" of the American's he's been "fighting for."

He then took the opportunity to call President Joe Biden "an enemy of the state" in response to comments Biden made on Thursday lambasting "MAGA forces" for fanning the "flames of political violence."

Trump also ridiculed Mark Zuckerberg, saying the Meta CEO begged the former president to have dinner with him last week.

Representatives for Trump and Fetterman did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Collecting consumer data

Tracer started in 2015 as a unit of Gary Vaynerchuk's ad agency VaynerMedia that automatically collects and organize data that isn't personally identifiable. Led by Tracer co-founder and CEO Jeffrey Nicholson, it also offers free consulting services. It started by helping VaynerMedia oversee hundreds of millions in ad buys for clients like Oreo maker Mondelez; today, clients include other ad agencies like Labelium; Condé Nast; and pharma giant Sanofi.

Tracer recently raised $ 9.9 million in seed funding led by big names like former Walmart and Amazon exec Marc Lore and NBA star Kevin Durant's firm Thirty Five Ventures.

Real-time market research

Agency veteran Matt Britton pitches his consumer intelligence startup Suzy as an always-on digital assistant like Siri or Alexa for marketers. It has a consumer panel that lets marketers conduct surveys and research on subjects like product development and ad effectiveness testing.

He raised $ 50 million in Series D after closing a $ 34 million Series C last year, bringing its total raised to $ 100 million.

H.I.G. Growth Partners, an affiliate of H.I.G. Capital, led the round, with Rho Capital Partners, Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, Foundry Group, and Triangle Peak Partners also participating.

Overview of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on August 29, 2022.

  • The European Union said that it is preemptively donating 5.5 million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine.
  • Potassium iodide will help protect civilians if there's an accident from fighting at a nuclear plant.
  • Southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia has seen recent shelling, sparking international concern.

The European Union is sending 5.5 million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine so it can protect civilians in the event of a serious accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been caught in the middle of ongoing fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Ukraine requested last week that the EU donate potassium iodide tablets as a "preventative safety measure," European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) said in a Tuesday statement. Doing so would provide civilians near the plant — which has seen increasing hostilities — with protection from potential radiation exposure.

A nuclear accident can lead to radioactive iodine being breathed into the lungs and then quickly absorbed by the thyroid gland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Potassium iodide can block radioactive iodine from ending up in the gland.

When a person takes the potassium iodide tablets, the thyroid gland takes in the medicine and is not able to absorb any more radioactive iodine, the CDC said.

Five million of the tablets are coming from the EU's emergency reserves, ECHO said, while the other 500,00 are being donated by Austria.

Southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe and has been occupied by Russian forces since early March. Since then, international watchdogs have voiced concern that unsafe behavior could trigger a major nuclear disaster.

In recent weeks, shelling around the plant has damaged the facility and disconnected it from the local power grid. Britain's Defense Ministry has said that the occupying Russian forces appear to be using the plant's protective status as a shield, leaving Ukraine reluctant to attack because it doesn't want to cause a disaster.

"No nuclear power plant should ever be used as a war theatre," EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said in a statement. "It is unacceptable that civilian lives are put in danger. All military action around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must stop immediately."

On Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency's chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said a mission is traveling to the nuclear plant this week to inspect its safety, stability, and security.

BBC suffers drastic New Year’s Eve ratings drop – despite millions forced to stay at home https://briefnews.eu/bbc-suffers-drastic-new-years-eve-ratings-drop-despite-millions-forced-to-stay-at-home/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-suffers-drastic-new-years-eve-ratings-drop-despite-millions-forced-to-stay-at-home/#respond Sat, 02 Jan 2021 14:16:24 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bbc-suffers-drastic-new-years-eve-ratings-drop-despite-millions-forced-to-stay-at-home/

This year’s New Year’s celebrations were like none other before as millions were told to stay home and avoid large gatherings by Boris Johnson in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus. While this meant many people had to celebrate bringing in 2021 from within their own homes, the BBC still aired its annual New Year’s Eve countdown, complete with a fireworks display and a performance from singer Alicia Keys.

However, despite the fact millions were forced to the confines of their own houses, the BBC suffered dwindling ratings for its New Year’s celebrations compared to 2019.

In figures obtained by The Sun Online, this year’s countdown managed to bring in 10.8 million viewers.

However, this was hundreds of thousands fewer than the number who tuned in to watch 2019’s celebrations which raked in 11.2 million.

2019 and 2020 saw the BBC’s New Year’s celebrations continue to follow the trend of dwindling ratings as 2018 had peaked at 13.3 million people.

“You couldn’t just have a nice fireworks display, it had to be political, virtue signalling, woke, Neo Marxist nonsense,” one furious viewer said on Twitter.

“Putting that aside for £1.5 million of tax payers money @SadiqKhan @BorisJohnson I think we were robbed, it really was lacklustre.”

A second echoed: “I remember a time when a firework display was just a firework display and not a party political broadcast on behalf of the BLM party endorsed by the Mayor of London and the BBC.”

While a third added to the debate: “Well the BBC and City of London clearly pushed a f**k ton of left-wing political activism in their new year’s celebration firework display.”

Brexiteer SNAPS at Corbyn for 'selling out MILLIONS of voters' – 'a BETRAYAL' https://briefnews.eu/brexiteer-snaps-at-corbyn-for-selling-out-millions-of-voters-a-betrayal/ https://briefnews.eu/brexiteer-snaps-at-corbyn-for-selling-out-millions-of-voters-a-betrayal/#respond Tue, 26 Feb 2019 12:50:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brexiteer-snaps-at-corbyn-for-selling-out-millions-of-voters-a-betrayal/

On Monday the Labour Party announced its backing for another EU referendum to prevent a “damaging Tory Brexit”. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Kevin Maguire, associate editor of the Daily Mirror, claimed another referendum would be between remaining in the EU or supporting Theresa May’s Brexit deal. The remark sparked a furious response from Andrew Pierce, who claimed the decision from Labour was a “betrayal”.

Mr Maguire said: “It will be the Brexit on offer. Do you want the Brexit on offer? Which is the real Brexit.

“Not the unicorn and the moon, the likes of him, sold you three years ago.

“With lies and illegality, because you know there’s no £350million a week for the NHS and so on. You know that now.

“It will be the truth. But, it’s still unlikely to be at this stage passed by Parliament.

“There are a lot of MPs, a sizeable minority of Labour MPs who will vote against it.”

Pierce replied: “And most Tory MPs will vote against it because it is a betrayal of what we voted for in 2016.

“We were told by David Cameron it was a once in a lifetime vote.

“The Government will support it, Labour said they would support it, and they are selling out millions of voters.”

Labour leader Mr Corbyn said he would put forward or support an amendment in favour of a public vote to stop Mrs May’s deal being “forced on the country” if his Brexit demands are not met.

Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that if Mrs May’s deal got through Parliament, Labour’s policy was for it to be put to a referendum – with remaining in the EU as the alternative option.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We specifically agreed yesterday, as the Labour Party, that if the Prime Minister’s deal gets through, that deal should be subject to the lock, if you like, of a public vote in the way that Jeremy Corbyn spelt out yesterday.”

But, Labour MP John Mann warned Mr Corbyn risked being ditched by voters over the party’s “absurd” shift to support a second referendum.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today: “Voters won’t have it. The last person to renege on their manifesto was Nick Clegg, it didn’t end very well for him on tuition fees.

“Our manifesto was unambiguous, we would accept the result of the referendum. A second referendum doesn’t do that and the voters – in very, very large numbers – will not accept that.”

Millions of sites that run the Drupal content management system run the risk of being hijacked until they’re patched against a vulnerability that allows hackers to remotely execute malicious code, managers of the open source project warned Wednesday.

CVE-2019-6340, as the flaw is tracked, stems from a failure to sufficiently validate user input, managers said in an advisory. Hackers who exploited the vulnerability could, in some cases, run code of their choice on vulnerable websites. The flaw is rated highly critical.

“Some field types do not properly sanitize data from non-form sources,” the advisory stated. “This can lead to arbitrary PHP code execution in some cases.”
