Wilshaw told Bentley: “People should know about the Second World War, the First World War, the conflicts which have taken place and a fight for freedom you and I enjoy.” The reality star replied: “I totally get that but I don’t think in needs to be put in such a young way to young children mentally – there mental health to be told this amount of people died for you.” Former Head of Ofsted Wilshaw hit back: “You mustn’t exaggerate,” to which the other guest responded: “I don’t think I am exaggerating. “I remember learning it as a child and thinking, ‘My god, it’s so intense.’” EON Productions, the James Bond fi lm factory, has just appointed a fresh director for its next 007 flick after Danny Boyle of Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire fame, walked out of the job after three months, taking his script with him. It wouldn’t be the first time that a Bond movie lost the plot. There’s natural suspicion that his vision might have been too PC for the Bond producers, with Boyle being a Leftie who designed the London Olympics opening event as a hymn to nationalised industry. If that was the source of the rift, it’s a mistake, because the millennial generation, young consumers aged about 22 to 35, are now in their full demographic flower. Every era gets the Bond it deserves: The Sixties had cigarettes, cocktails, jetpacks and Pussy Galore. The Seventies had suave, tongue-in-cheek glam, epitomised by Roger Moore in a white Lotus Esprit submarine. The millennial generation must and will have their millennial Bond, so let’s meet him or her: Agent 007, licensed to hug. But first things first: the ritual visit to Q Branch before the mission… “Now pay attention 007, here’s a collection of passports you’ll need – all gender-neutral. Your communication, navigation photography and cryptography needs are taken care of by this iPhone.” “Looks like a standard model to me, Q.” “This one is special. The battery lasts a whole day. And, Bond: DO use the risk assessment app before you ski down an avalanche, will you? And if you can’t keep it zipped, please use this consent-recording app. Swipe left for the flamethrower. It’s lead-free napalm.” “Any more toys for me, Q?” “Just take a look at this. It’s an exploding e-cig.” LICENCE TO THRILL? Daniel Craig’s miserably introspective agent has one more mission to go (Image: NA) “But all e-cigs are exploding e-cigs, Q.” “Yes, but with this one you can choose when it goes off. And this is a standard briefcase. The machine pistol deploys if you open it with the locks on this combination.” “Thanks so much for the trigger warning.” “And see here, Bond. This looks like an ordinary whole-body rubber suit for perverts, but when you wear it its AI, nanotech processors can alter its surface to make you resemble a person of any nationality or 57 genders when the necessity arises.” “Isn’t that exploitative, Q? What do you call it, the cultural appropriator suit?” “No, Bond. And you’ll be wearing it on every mission from now.” The Sixties had cigarettes, cocktails, jetpacks and Pussy Galore. (Image: GETTY) “You’re joking, Q!” “I never joke about my work, Bond, and neither does the SIS revenue directorate. We get most of our funds these days from licensing your wearisome exploits to film makers, and as long as you make good use of this suit, they can hire any actor of any heritage to play you, according to their business needs. “We call it the Opportunistic Sex, Culture And Racial Simulator. OSCARS, for short.” All right, let’s do a reality check and make sure we’re not just stereotyping a whole generation. Are millenials really whiny and soft and, as employees, are they really higher-maintenance than the Space Shuttle? I’ve worked with dozens of people who were all 20 to 30 years younger than me, and have to tell you that the stereotype is more accurate than some intelligence dossiers I could mention. Anthony Horowitz, writer of an authorised Bond novel says: “I never ever use the words ‘Bond girl’. (Image: GETTY) They have their virtues but they can’t handle conflict and they take offence like ducks take bread. Future Bond films are going to have to accommodate millennial workplace expectations. After all, the real SIS is already doing just that. This is straight from its careers website: “Most of our roles wouldn’t be classed as dangerous and you would never be asked to do something you’re uncomfortable doing, or if you felt the risk was too high. In any potentially dangerous situation, you would work with our in-house security advisory team to make sure that any risks were assessed and managed appropriately. “We do operate in some high-threat areas but our number one concern will always be to ensure your safety.” Isn’t there something about that statement from our elite protectors that leaves you shaken, not stirred? The naturally traditional Bond of Fleming, Connery and Moore doesn’t play well with millennials who are ever-vigilant for every kind of ism – not least sexism. A lot of the “Bond girls” such as Pussy and Vesper Lynd were strong, vengeful valkyries with their own initiative, who were an alpha female match to Bond’s alpha male. But then there were the disposable cookies such as the masseuse whom Bond dismisses when his contact arrives with a slap on the bum and the words: “Man talk.” In 2016 a YouTuber called Guru Kid uploaded a video he called “Inappropriate moments in James Bond movies” or what bad people choose to call: “The best bits.” Millennials, operating in their natural habitat – online – screamed and screamed until they were sick. Can the writers keep up with today’s ever-shrinking circle of acceptability? Anthony Horowitz, writer of an authorised Bond novel says: “I never ever use the words ‘Bond girl’. That objectifies women and is now offensive. Although it’s hard to find an alternative: ‘Bond’s female associates’ does sound a little bit dry.” Here’s my advice on how the Bond franchise can re-orientate to the millennial mindset. Practise. They must go back to the classic Bond moments and re-write them as an exercise: “Jaws. I don’t want you to feel bad because I zapped your metal teeth with a table lamp. You did really well and you’re a very special villain. Can I get a selfie with us both?” AND the famous exchange “Do you expect me to talk?” “No. Mr Bond. I expect you to die” could become: “Actually, Goldfinger ‘Mr.’ isn’t my preferred pronoun.” The Seventies had suave, tongue-in-cheek glam, epitomised by Roger Moore (Image: GETTY) “Bond, I think you’re a sexist, misogynistic dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War.” “I hear you M, but I don’t think that’s fair, and by the way I’ve been 007 for a long while now and as part of my journey in this role I should be 001 or at least 002 by now.” Who will be millennial Bond? Doomy Daniel Craig is signed up for one last pout after declaring three years ago that he’d rather slit his wrists. Steady, Daniel. One last eight-figure payday and you can use those eyes, blazing blue like a blowtorch, to play Hamlet for the rest of your life. But who’s next? Tom Hardy? Poldark’s Aidan Turner? Grantchester’s James Norton. Idris Elba? Lily Allen? I say to EON, give me a call. When a dead mouse was found at work it was up to me to remove it while my millennial workmates ran round in circles. Dinosaur as I am, my courage was recognised across the generation gap. I can’t promise to do in SMERSH agents, but mice I can handle. The name’s Burke, Nigel Burke.

As creator, producer and director of the hit digital show Cold As Balls, hosted by Hart, Ratner is adept at corralling superstars into a sports version of Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis. So far, he’s off to a good start: Boxer Floyd Mayweather and NBA star Russell Westbrook spent the morning of the ESPYs shooting segments for Ratner’s show. Season 2, which premiered on Aug. 21, also features basketball players Lamar Odom, Isaiah Thomas and Metta World Peace; football’s Odell Beckham Jr. and Johnny Manziel; and commentator Skip Bayless.
For the 29-year-old Ratner, managing such a star-studded project means making sure the temperature is just right. His multimedia production house, OBB Pictures, boasts a diverse portfolio aimed at the elusive millennial and Generation Z demographics, everything from feature-length documentaries to commercials to scripted comedies. Ratner’s script didn’t cast OBB as the go-to incubator for Hollywood-curious NBA stars, but that’s what it has become. At least in part.
Traditionally, you haven’t seen these big stars on digital, but we’ve built a business predicated on trust.
Michael Ratner
From Westbrook to Detroit’s Blake Griffin to Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, Ratner uses his connections and instincts to help athletes shine, comfortably, while testing the acting waters. “The goal was never to be a sports content guy, and I still don’t identify as one,” says Ratner. “But when you do something well, everyone expects that from you. I wasn’t going to turn away business when that started.”
Growing up in New York, Ratner was a hardcore Knicks fan. Still, his most memorable moments in front of a television came via movie night with his grandfather. “We’d sit together watching old movies, and I loved the experience of watching content with him,” says Ratner. “I thought, ‘how cool would it be if I actually made that stuff?’” After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Ratner returned home to attend film school at New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2011. Along the way, he convinced Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg to let him produce a series of digital comedy sketches for the hit station’s morning show. “I begged him,” Ratner confesses. A Rick Ross spoof called Stay Sleepin’ and a commentary on the 2013 state of hip-hop — Rachet, Turn Up, Molly — went viral.
Ratner and his older brother, Scott, co-founded OBB, aka Original Big Bold, in 2014 to deliver millennial-driven original storytelling. Recognizing a massive barrier to entry for making a feature film, Ratner steered the company toward short, digestible digital content — drawing from his film school experience. “Call it luck, but I saw that young people’s viewing habits were changing,” Ratner explains. “I’d just spent three years working my ass off to get good at making short [films]. That wasn’t a business before, but it is now.”
“Michael knows how to grow relationships better than most people who’ve been in this industry for a lifetime,” says Miranda Sherman, an OBB production executive and Ratner’s confidante since their days at Tisch, when she was running the graduate student film program and marveled at how many projects he’d juggle at once.
Ratner’s first big break came from ESPN. After two sports documentaries (Dwight Howard: In the Moment and In Football We Trust), Ratner directed and produced Gonzo @ The Derby for ESPN’s acclaimed 30 for 30 documentary series. Featuring actor Sean Penn, Gonzo revisited the legacy of the late writer Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 trip to the Kentucky Derby. When the film was named as an official selection at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, the sports inquiries came flowing in.

Still, OBB’s most authentic sports partnership came by way of happenstance. After shooting a commercial starring Chandler Parsons, Ratner and the NBA forward bonded over dinner. Regular appearances on each other’s respective Instagram feeds suggest the friendship is still thriving. And what bro doesn’t like doing a favor for his pal?
In search of a star for the new mockumentary series that he’d sold to Verizon’s now defunct streaming service, go90, Ratner knew exactly who to call to get Blake Griffin’s phone number. “I knew that [Griffin] had done sketch comedy with Drake at the ESPYs and that he was interested in the acting,” says Ratner, thankful for Parsons granting the favor. “So, I cold-called him.”
Through three seasons of The 5th Quarter, Griffin regularly appears in the show “chronicling the greatest untold and untrue stories in sports history.” In the debut episode, he starred as Clif Cliff Adele, a 7-year-old basketball prodigy. NBA figures like Parsons, Embiid and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban followed, and on Cold As Balls, athlete credits are endless. “People love it, and it shows people a whole different side of [the athletes],” says Ratner. “Traditionally, you haven’t seen these big stars on digital, but we’ve built a business predicated on trust.” Word has gotten around that he offers a safe space: “I’m not going to ruin someone for the sake of going viral.”
In June, OBB took over a 10,000-square-foot building as it diversifies into comedy, music and horror. First up? Finding a network home for Smart Money, a series based on Michael Konik’s 2006 memoir about life inside one of the world’s biggest gambling rings. And in early August, Ratner announced a new division, OBB Music, with a feature documentary chronicling the rise of superstar rapper Young Jeezy in the works.
And while there’s no denying that OBB possesses an innate understanding of the evolving Hollywood landscape, staying ahead of trends is paramount for this small fish in the sea. “That’s something we talk about all the time,” says Jack Davis, founder of CryptTV and a Ratner collaborator. “How do you build for the future in a time that’s changing so rapidly? There’s been a seismic shift in consumer behavior and network behavior.”
The constant change can be unnerving. Verizon shut down go90 in July, landing The 5th Quarter on the disabled list — for now. And new Los Angeles resident LeBron James has plans for his own company, SpringHill Entertainment, which is shaping up as a direct competitor. “We’ve discussed working on projects together,” says Ratner. “But one thing I feel strongly about is: If SpringHill is for LeBron, then we’re for everybody else.”
OZY’s Five Questions With Michael Ratner
Correction: An earlier version of this story misquoted Ratner on the movies he watched with his grandfather.

Sam Park picks at his lunch at El Torero, a Mexican restaurant in Duluth, a northeastern suburb of Atlanta. It’s a somewhat ironic choice, given that the 32-year-old politician could have picked from dozens of nearby places to emphasize his Korean heritage in a neighborhood where Eastern churches and Asian grocery stores abound.
This is home, though. And so the fact that Park knows his tacos as well as his Korean BBQ is kind of the point. Increasingly, the area will be known less as the “Seoul of the South,” than simply the modern iteration of “the South.” Gwinnett County, one of the most diverse in the nation, is noteworthy for more than its culinary fusion. The county was 90 percent white in 1990, but by 2040, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission, Gwinnett will be 37 percent Latino, 29 percent white, 20 percent Black, and 14 percent Asian and others. “It really is a diverse cross-section that seems to be moving toward some sort of equilibrium,” Park says. ”Which I think is fascinating from a nerdy point of view.”
Sam is smart; he is thoughtful; he is relentless. And I think he is demonstrative of what we can do when we cultivate young leaders and give them platforms.
Stacey Abrams, former Georgia House Minority Leader
Georgia’s only male Asian-American lawmaker and the first openly gay man elected to its state House could well be one of the faces of that demographic shift led by historic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams — who is seeking to become the nation’s first Black woman elected governor. Georgia Democrats are betting less white means more blue. Park readily admits the change isn’t “inevitable,” and his own story is instructive on this point. He upset a three-term Republican incumbent in 2016, but it was one of few bright spots for Democrats that night as the GOP continues to dominate the state. His proposals to boost voter registration, increase patient access to medical cannabis and expand access to public services for non-English speakers ran into roadblocks in the Republican-dominated House. Park also worked on the much-hyped campaign of Democrat Jon Ossoff, who fell short in the most expensive congressional election in history.
But Park is playing the long game. As Ossoff’s deputy political director, he was in charge of converting Asian-American, Muslim and LGBT voters — many of whom remain engaged in this year’s midterm elections. His efforts drew national notice. “Koreans who may never have donated or door-knocked or registered to vote, they were seeing and hearing from him, and were probably even engaged for the first time,” says Christine Chen, executive director of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote. That momentum has translated to first-time candidates like Ethan Pham and David Kim running for Congress in a Gwinnett-based district (Pham lost in the May primary; Kim advanced to the Democratic runoff on July 24). “Sam is smart; he is thoughtful; he is relentless,” says Abrams, the former state House minority leader who has led Democratic efforts to turn out minorities. “And I think he is demonstrative of what we can do when we cultivate young leaders and give them platforms.”
But Democrats have been claiming Georgia will run blue for a few cycles now to no avail. While demographics might shift, “you still have to be a candidate who resonates with an overwhelming amount of voters,” Republican strategist Ryan Mahoney says. As for Park? “I think Sam is too young in this whole game. … When you don’t have majorities under the Gold Dome, you have to make a decision: You can be loud and build your name ID, or you can get something done.”
Dressed casually over lunch, Park appears even younger than his promo photos and social media image. The slick suit and side-fade suggest calm, cool, collected lawyer. In person, Park is more thirty-something still trying to find his place in this political age. His short time as a candidate hasn’t given him the polished air of practiced politicians, but it has allowed him to retain an authentic persona — and a sense of awe. “My grandparents were refugees from the Korean War,” he says. “I don’t come from a political background, and yet here I am, a state rep. That can only happen in a country like America.”
His parents raised him Christian and Republican, like many Asian-Americans who settled in the South during the ’90s. They were entrepreneurs, owning a small check-cashing store for a decade before shifting to a cell phone outlet. In 2014, Park’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Although she passed away earlier this year, she initially was able to get treatment partly because she was covered under the Affordable Care Act, and was a recent convert to the Democratic Party. Preserving the health care law was part of Park’s decision to run for office. “It’s the benefits that we receive that makes my love for my country even stronger,” he says.
The decision wasn’t easy. Abrams remembers sitting down with Park, a former intern of hers, when he was debating whether to run. “He was concerned about running as an out gay man, because his mother and community understood it but it wasn’t talked about,” she says. The two had an honest conversation about the interconnectedness of race, sexuality and religion in the Korean community. “The bravest thing he told me is that he was willing to risk these things to win this election.” He understood, in other words, that “if he didn’t say who he was, he wouldn’t be running an honest campaign for himself.”
Park is now focused on making tangible gains in the legislature on civil rights, redistricting reform and expanding Medicaid. In the long run, he hopes a progressive, pro-worker platform can expand Democrats’ appeal no matter voters’ color — or preferred cuisine.
Correction: Sam Park was mistakenly listed as Georgia’s only Asian-American lawmaker. He is actually one of two, the other being Rep. Bee Nguyen of Atlanta, who was elected in 2017. We regret the error.

Like a big, fat chameleon, Peter Griffin has managed to infiltrate countless social groups over the years — remember when he was gay for almost an entire episode? — but his stint as a millennial will surely prove to be one of his darkest.

One of the biggest lightning rods in this year’s NFL Draft is UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen, who is seen by some NFL scouts and commentators as being too opinionated — or too much of a millennial, in the words of his former coach — to be a franchise quarterback.
But in a recent interview for for ESPN the Magazine, Rosen pushed back against that notion, saying, “ Right now, I want to be the best QB that I possibly f—ing can be. When the NFL decides I suck, I want to be the absolute best at the next thing in my life.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, now the driving force behind his kingdom, spent the past week touring the United States and meeting important American officials, celebrities, and businessmen.
In 2018, any whistle-stop tour of the seats of American power means taking time to meet the major players of Silicon Valley.
The young prince, often referred to as MbS, was on a charm offensive, according to the New York Times. His goal was to change the western perspective of Saudi Arabia as a conservative country where women are treated as second-class people dependent on oil money. Instead, MbS wants Americans to see Saudi Arabia as a modern country with extensive investments in growth markets like technology.
All of which explains why the prince dropped by Silicon Valley late last week to meet with the CEOs of Apple and Google. (His American tour also involved a stop in Seattle, where he met with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, according to the Times.)
He even got to see the inside of Apple’s new $ 5 billion campus, Apple Park, which Apple CEO Tim Cook said earlier this year won’t be allowing tours for Apple fans because there is “so much confidential stuff around.”
While at Apple, he discussed developing applications in Saudi Arabia and new Arabic-language educational content, according to a Saudi press release. He also got to discuss education, health, and marketing, culminating in a presentation at the Steve Jobs Theater, where he received a presentation on Apple’s “modern voice applications,” according to the Saudi Press Agency.
At Google, the prince met with cofounders Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, according to the Saudi Press Agency. He was briefed about Google’s “electronic cloud, artificial intelligence and automatics learning,” according to the press release. They discussed ways to cooperate on cyber security.
The prince also took some time to sit down with some of technology’s top investors, including Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, Sam Altman, and Vinod Khosla.
While no major initiatives were announced with Apple nor Google, the Saudi delegation got a lot of great photographs of the prince hanging out with some of the United States’ most successful technology entrepreneurs.

It’s hard not fitting in.
If you feel sort-of-but-not-quite like a millennial, and sort-of-but-not-quite like a Gen X-er, take heart: You might just be a Xennial. That’s a term for the “micro-generation” born between 1977 and 1985.
The term was coined in 2014, by Sarah Stankorb in Good Magazine. Recently, people have started talking about Xennials again, with self-proclaimed members of this demographic waxing (read: tweeting) nostalgic about Oregon Trail and flip phones. Merriam-Webster even labeled “xennial” one of its “words we’re watching.”
Below, Business Insider has outlined the defining characteristics of Xennials, and how they’re different from the generations that came before and after them.
