Actress Alyssa Milano has been asked to disavow her friend and fellow #MeToo movement supporter Linda Sarsour, a controversial Muslim women’s rights activist who has been accused of antisemitism and support for Sharia law.

Speaking on a panel at the Politicon conference in Los Angeles, Milano was confronted by conservative journalist Laura Loomer over her friendship with Sarsour.

“You are friends with Linda Sarsour, both of you ladies have positioned yourselves as speakers and representatives of the #MeToo movement,” Loomer asked Milano.

“I want to ask you right now to disavow Linda Sarsour because she is a supporter of Sharia law. And under Sharia law, women are oppressed, women are forced to wear a hijab. My question is, will you please disavow her because she is advocating for Sharia law.”

Milano didn’t seem very interested in either disavowing Sarsour or answering the question — and as Loomer was immediately confronted by two women who attempted to usher her out of the room, the actress responded to say simply that Sarsour is “not” an advocate of Sharia law and thanked Loomer for the question.

As Loomer exited the room, Milano spoke up to say that if people “don’t know how to talk to one another we’ll never evolve.” When Loomer shot back to say she had just asked “a polite question,” Milano complained that the question had been asked in a “very distinct tone” which seemingly precluded her from giving an answer.

Sarsour, a former executive director of the Arab American Association of New York and one of the leaders of the Women’s March, has made statements in the past which seem to support the idea of Sharia, or Islamic law.

In 2014, the Palestinian-American activist said that Saudi Arabia’s maternity leave policies puts the US “to shame” in a tweet that seemed to imply that a Saudi ban on women being allowed to drive was not really an important issue in comparison.

“You’ll know when you’re living under Sharia Law if suddenly all your loans and credit cards become interest free. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?” she tweeted in 2015.

Claims of Sarsour’s anti-Semitism appear to stem from her links to Louis Farrakhan, the highly controversial leader of the Nation of Islam, who lost his ‘verified’ status on Twitter earlier this year after posting a link to a speech in which he claimed to be “unmasking the Satanic Jew and the Synagogue of Satan”.

Farrakhan has also made numerous anti-white comments, including saying white people “deserve to die,” and came out against interracial marriage, arguing that “you can’t integrate with wickedness if you want righteousness.” Sarsour spoke at a 2015 rally organized by Farrakhan.

In 2017, singer Courtney Love tweeted that she wouldn’t support anything that is “being led by an anti-Semetic (sic) terrorist” who is “using feminism as a tool to promote her radicalism.” She also tweeted directly to Sarsour, calling her a “vile disgrace to women and all mankind.”

Milano’s refusal to answer the legitimate question about Sarsour’s past comments –whatever its tone– leaves a lingering question; why she is all about women’s equality and safety in Hollywood, but isn’t prepared to condemn those who appear to support oppression of women in other countries?

The Republicans secured a narrow election win in a conservative area, where the party spent millions on ads and activists. Milano has spoken for a generation of hysterical Democrats by coming to the only conclusion possible – Moscow did it, and may have been in cahoots with the Green Party.  

The Ohio 12 special election was held after the Republican incumbent Pat Tiberi stepped down.  As it stands the Republicans have claimed victory, but the result is so close absentee ballots could still swing it when they’re counted later this month.

Milano, a famously left-wing actress, managed to hit out at both Russia, the Republicans, the Green Party and the basic workings of democracy on Twitter. She was angry that Democrat challenger Danny O’Connor appears to have fallen just short of what would have been an unlikely win, in part because the Green Party took 1,000 votes.

In the mind of Milano, there are only two outcomes in modern politics: a Democrat win, or Moscow meddling. She is a symptom and the consequence of a political environment where it is easier to blame Russia than accept personal fault or a failure of policy.

I wonder if she thinks the tens of thousands of people that didn’t come out to vote at all are all being held captive at the end of a Kalashnikov in their living rooms.

Democrat O’Connor enjoyed an impressive surge of support in Ohio’s congressional special election, but not quite enough it seems to beat the Republicans in a traditionally conservative area.   

The Five Thirty Eight blog which has a stellar reputation when it comes predicting elections based on actual stats and information said the Ohio 12 special election “basically went according to script” calling the result “in line with Democrats’ average overperformance in these elections in the Trump era.”

Milano asks of Green Party’s modest success: “Why else would anyone cast a protest vote in Ohio when there’s so much at stake?” She has inadvertently, and you have to assume unwittingly, highlighted the issue facing the Democrats and their supporters. They still can’t work out why people would vote against them. If Russians are so successful at swinging elections, the DNC should hire some to help them win something.

The reaction on Twitter at least suggests some common sense does remain in the atmosphere of anti-Russian hysteria around US elections.

The Ohio 12 special election will prove useful in predicting the outcome of the upcoming midterms due in November. The numbers suggest that the Democrat party could get an impressive swing towards them. Milano’s comments suggest, that if it’s not enough to beat the Republicans, they’ll just blame Russia.

The cast of The CW’s Insatiable just got a little more Charmed.

Alyssa Milano has signed on to play a recurring role in the beauty pageant-themed drama pilot, according to a report from our sister site Deadline. Disney Channel grad Debby Ryan stars as a vengeance-minded teen who enters the world of beauty pageants with the help of lawyer-turned-pageant coach Bob (The Walking Dead alum Dallas Roberts). Milano will play Bob’s wife Coralee, who’s eager to climb each and every rung of the social ladder. (The role is a “major recurring” one, per Deadline.)

We last saw Milano acting on the small screen in ABC’s summer soap Mistresses, which she ditched in 2014 after just two seasons. But she’s a true TV veteran, dating back to her days as Tony’s daughter Samantha on the ’80s sitcom Who’s the Boss?. Milano also spent eight seasons as sister witch Phoebe on The WB’s Charmed, which wrapped up in 2006.
