The Milanese club will play to an empty San Siro on two occasions, as punishment for the racial abuse levied at Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly by sections of their fans during Wedneday’s Serie A fixture between the two sides. A third match will then be played in the stadium, this time with the ‘curva’ section, which houses Inter Milan’s ‘ultra’ fans, closed. Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed after the 1-0 defeat that he had asked match officials on three occasions to call off the game after Senegalese defender Koulibaly was targeted with slurs throughout the game. The tempestuous nature of the match continued well after the final whistle, as fans clashed outside the stadium. Four Napoli fans were stabbed, while an Inter Milan fan was killed when he was struck by a vehicle close to the stadium. READ MORE: Italian FA considering suspension of Serie A following death of Inter Milan fan – report The punishment will continue past the middle of February, as Inter Milan’s next three scheduled home games are against Sassuolo (19 January), Bologna (3 February) and Sampdoria (17 February). Koulibaly has also received a two-match ban for the red card he picked up during the fixture. Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian FA, says that he took the action when he decided that the racist abuse was “no longer tolerable.” “Football is the heritage of true supporters and as such should be defended from all those who use it as a tool to create tension,” he said. “We condemn all forms of both physical and verbal violence, with the aggravating circumstance of racial discrimination. We do not tolerate such behavior ruining football.” Meanwhile, Napoli boss Ancelotti has received praise from anti-racism groups for pledging to remove his team from the field if he finds himself in a similar situation in future. “Under Ancelotti’s leadership the position of Napoli on racism and discriminatory abuse is clear, we note that the club previously threatened to take their players off the pitch before a match against Atalanta on 3 December,” it said. “Kalidou Koulibaly has consistently been the target of an alarming level of racist abuse while playing against clubs across Italy, including Atalanta, Juventus, Lazio and now Inter Milan. “Too often, the punishments handed out by Italian football authorities are weak and ineffective.” Koulibaly posted an apology to social media for being sent off in the game, but reiterated his pride at being Senegalese. “I’m sorry about the defeat and especially to have let my brothers down,” he wrote. “But I’m proud of the color of my skin. To be French, Senegalese, Neapolitan, and a man.” Italy’s Milan Linate Airport is one of the busiest in the country, welcoming more than nine million passengers annually. In 2019, renovation projects have been planned for the airport to tarmac the single runway, according to airline news report OPSGROUP. This will mean the closure of the airport for three months between 27 July and 27 October. Britons booking their holidays to Italy next year may need to find alternative routes. Flights from the UK to Milan include British Airways and easyJet who operate a number of flights to the city. The closure is to be during one of the busiest seasons with the peak summer holiday during this time. However, there is an alternative airport Britons can choose if heading to the Italian city. Milan Malpensa is a popular airport for many to choose with international flights, meaning they could book flights to that location instead. British Airways and easyJet also fly to the large airport as well as Flybe and Ryanair. This comes with a downside – the distance to the city centre. Despite being smaller, Milan Linate Airport is approximately five miles from the centre and takes just ten minutes by taxi. Milan Malpensa, however, is 25 miles from the centre which can take just under an hour by train. The increase in passengers, approximately two million who would travel during the three months of closure, could also put pressure on the airport. A spokesperson for easyJet told the Independent: “We are currently working with the airports to move our existing Linate programme across to Malpensa for the period of the closure.” Earlier this month, Rome Airport came to a standstill following a suspicious package let in the terminal. The airport was closed for approximately 15 minutes during the incident as the terminal was shut. Bomb experts rushed to the scene to explode the abandoned suitcase following the scare. However, it was later found to be full of coconuts as opposed to anything sinister. Ned Donovan, a freelance journalist, tweeted: ”Amazing, the Italian police have blown up a bag full of coconuts and have now reopened Rome airport.” Inter Milan vs Tottenham: Express Sport brings you LIVE Champions League updates from the San Siro INTER MILAN vs TOTTENHAM Inter Milan XI: Handanovic, Skriniar, De Vrij, Miranda, Asamoah, Vecino, Brozovic, Politano, Nainggolan, Perisic, Icardi Tottenham XI: Vorm, Aurier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Dembele, Eriksen, Lamela, Son, Kane Inter Milan vs Tottenham: Express Sport brings you LIVE Champions League updates from the San Siro (Image: REUTERS) GROUP OF DEATH… 17:20: After a lack of transfer activity during the summer, there were plenty of questions ahead for Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino. However, after three straight Premier League wins, including turning United over 3-0 at Old Trafford, everyone was left wondering what all the fuss had been about. Come full-time at Wembley on Saturday, though, and a jaded Spurs were staring at back-to-back defeats. The challenges ahead in Europe offer little respite, with a visit to Inter Milan first up. Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven are also in the Group B mix, which means there are few margins for error if Pochettino is to safely guide his side through to the knockout stages. That’s nearly half the side for those new to this football game… Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Winks and Lucas Moura started the Liverpool defeat on Saturday but all drop out. Serge Aurier, Davinson Sanchez, Ben Davies, Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min all come into the side to freshen things up. As for Inter, Luciano Spalletti has matched Spurs’ five changes. As usual, I’ve heard your question and have the answer for you. “Both teams are in a similar situation and come into the game on the back of a defeat,” Berbatov told Betfair. “Inter have started the season very slowly, and sit 13th in Serie A so I don’t think Spurs will lose the game. It’s important to start well in the group stage and if my old club comes back to London with a draw I think they’ll be happy. “It seems funny to say it, but Spurs have the greater recent Champions League experience with Inter not playing in the competition for seven years. Experience is important in football and it’s on Spurs’ side here. The home side will be under pressure to perform but they might find it tough against a Tottenham side that are used to playing in this competition now. I don’t think either manager will be too upset with a score draw.” Inter Milan vs Tottenham: Express Sport brings you LIVE Champions League updates from the San Siro (Image: REUTERS) VARDLY 16:55: And that’s what happens when you try to combine ‘Hardly’ with ‘VAR’ – It looks like someone has spelled Vardy wrong. Following the success of the system at the World Cup, it is inevitable it will be brought into UEFA’s elite competition but Europe’s governing body appear to be thinking in terms of next season. OK, I’m being a touch over-dramatic but there have been a few adjustments to the format. The qualifying process may have changed – with 26 teams now gaining direct entry – but the format of the group stages remains largely untouched. The only noticeable difference concerns kick-off times. The previous uniform 7.45pm starts have been scrapped and replaced by a staggered system to suit broadcasters. On each group stage evening, two games will kick-off at 5.55pm with the remaining six at 8pm – hence why I’m not enjoying my afternoon nap right now. Goalkeeper and captain Lloris has a thigh injury while midfielders Alli and Sissoko have hamstring problems that saw them miss Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League home loss to Liverpool. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino told that defenders Alderweireld and Trippier had also stayed behind in London and added that he was being forced to rest players early in the season. “We still have out Hugo Lloris, Dele Alli and Moussa Sissoko. They are in London,” Pochettino said. “Then a technical decision in London – Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier.” The absence of Alli and especially Lloris against Liverpool had an discernible impact, with errors from stand-in keeper Michel Vorm contributing to both Liverpool goals. Alli’s team mate Harry Kane said after the match that Tottenham had failed to control the game and gave the ball away too many times en route to a second successive domestic defeat. Alderweireld and Trippier both played against Liverpool but Pochettino said the decision to leave them out of the squad for the Inter game was not a punishment for their displays. AC Milan hadn’t conceded a goal for 599 minutes but Henrikh Mkhitaryan ended that record when he broke the deadlock at the San Siro after 15 minutes.
Then moments after Mkhitaryan had struck the crossbar, Aaron Ramsey doubled Arsenal’s lead with a composed finish from a Mesut Ozil pass.
Arsenal had gone four games without a win and the pressure was growing on Wenger and his players with the last result a shock defeat to Brighton.
But the result puts Arsenal in a great position ahead of next week’s second leg and ends a run of four defeats.
And Wenger admitted it was important for his side to finally overcome a difficult spell.
He said: “It is an important win of course after we had a nightmare week.
“Overall it is important to win, but it is not
“We were not in a position to take risks, but we could not be too cautious as you lose fluidity. We defended with resilience until the end.
“When you play in a cup final it is hard to digest in a few days.
“When you are knocked down like a boxer you don’t have time to react and you are only halfway up, but you have to respond. Your pride and desire to show quality has to come through in the game.”
On his return to the side after missing Sunday’s defeat to Brighton, Ramsey was excellent in midfield alongside Granit Xhaka and Jack Wilshere.
And the Welshman said having a good start was the key to their victory.
Ramsey said: “We started well, we got a couple of goals in the first half and we have shown we have plenty of character in the team.
“It is never easy to come to the San Siro and play AC Milan, we came here before and lost 4-0.
“We played well in the first half and moved the ball well and kept a clean sheet. We have been on a bad run, but sometimes you train hard and it does not work, but we know what we are capable of.”

Aaron Ramsey celebrates his goal against AC Milan
Missing in action in three of Arsenal’s last four defeats – he didn’t play in the loss to Ostersunds – Ozil was back to his mesmerising best in the San Siro.
The 29-year-old pulled the strings by setting up first Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who also hit the woodwork, and then Aaron Ramsey as Arsenal sailed into a two-goal lead against AC Milan.
This was the Germany star who terrorised La Liga with Real Madrid and helped his country win the 2014 World Cup. The man Arsene Wenger decided was worth £350,000 a week.
About time he showed up. Arsenal were bidding to avoid a fifth straight loss for the first time since way back in 1977, and they had to rip up the form book to pull it off. Milan were unbeaten in 13 going into it. They hadn’t conceded a goal in six matches. They had lost just one of their previous 20 games in European competitions in their own stadium.
By contrast, Wenger was so concerned about his own side’s form he even claimed before kick-off they had “forgotten how good they are”. Ozil, for one night at least, remembered.
For Wenger, it wasn’t quite an old master painting another masterpiece though. But it did at least paper over some of the cracks that have been appearing this season.
Arsenal were still wide open at times. They rode their luck. But they stopped the rot, kept a clean sheet, eased the pressure on their manager, and are suddenly big favourites to win the tie.
Who would have thought all that was possible after Sunday’s dismal defeat at Brighton and all the fall-out that followed?
They made a shaky start with AC Milan fizzing the ball across David Ospina’s goal, but they should have led when the first of many brilliant Ozil passes picked out Jack Wilshere bombing forward.
The Gunners midfielder started in the No 10 role, but despite being clean through he chose to pass out wide to Mkhitaryan, who struck the side netting.Moments later Patrick Crutone did the same at the other end for Milan, and Arsenal were fortunate again when Ospina almost conceded a penalty.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan celebrates his goal
He came rushing out and caught Hakan Calhanoglu, but the Milan forward didn’t go down and French referee Clement Turpin waved away the home side’s appeals. Both those chances came down Arsenal’s right, where Calum Chambers was standing in as a makeshift right back for the injured Hector Bellerin.
But goals change games, and the Gunners scored a big one in the 15th minute when Mkhitaryan struck gold, and it was Ozil who created it. Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso revealed he had spent his nights leading up to the game thinking about how he could stop the German.
But it was his pinpoint chipped pass which picked out Mkhitaryan, who cut inside Leonardo Bonucci before firing home his first goal for Arsenal into the top corner off the Milan skipper’s back.
Bonucci was inches away from heading Milan level from a Calhanoglu corner, but Mkhitaryan then pinged one off the crossbar at the other end after Danny Welbeck broke away to find him in space.

Arsenal still managed to go into half time two goals up though. Ozil again was the orchestrator, feeding Ramsey with a wonderful defence-splitting pass.
And the Welsh wizard cast a spell on dosy Donnarumma, dancing around him with ease before slotting home the easiest of finishes.
Milan had their moments. But Laurent Koscielny blocked shots and won headers, and Ospina was rarely tested. By the time Ozil strolled slowly off to be replaced by Rob Holding, to a deafening chorus of whistles from the home fans in the 72, 821 crowd, the Italians were getting desperate.
Ospina did have to be alert to race off his line and clear from Nikola Kalinic before it was over, but by the end he had only faced a single shot on target.

AC MILAN 0-2 ARSENAL
Arsenal travel to the San Siro looking to end their losing run against AC Milan in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie.
The Gunners have lost four matches in a row which is the first time that has happened since October 2002.
Arsenal are sixth in the Premier League, 13 points behind north London rivals Tottenham in fourth, with this competition their best chance of returning to the Champions League.
Meanwhile AC Milan are in terrific form under Gennaro Gattuso.
They are unbeaten in 13 matches, and recently reached the Coppa Italia final with a penalty shootout victory over Lazio.

AC Milan vs Arsenal LIVE updates: Latest Europa League action from the San Siro
74: Still nothing doing for the hosts. Surely a third on the break for the Gunners would put this tie to bed…
71: Arsenal showing their stones here. Some strong defending from Aaron Ramsey, perhaps a little too strong on reflection as he’s booked.
Calabria stands over the free-kick, but his cross goes straight out of play.
68: So it looks like Milan are now playing with two in attack. Bonaventura has gone over to the flank.
Ramsey looks to send Welbeck clear but the striker is offside. Andre Silva on for Cutrone.
65: Arsenal make their first change with Maitland-Niles replacing Kolasinac. Kalinic, formerly of Blackburn of course, comes on for Calhanoglu.
63: More groans around the stadium as Bonaventura smashes it over from distance. Hosts running out of ideas, and their fans know it.
Kolasinac booked for a handball. Bit harsh considering he wasn’t even looking at it.

60: A few things starting to happen for AC Milan. Bonaventura seems to be finding little pockets of space but he’s yet to seriously test Ospina. Gennaro Gattuso might need to change a few things.
57: Bonaventura with another chance, but he’s ballooned Calabria’s low cross miles over the bar. First real chance for the hosts goes begging.
55: Bonaventura has a crack from distance but it’s a routine save for Ospina.
No idea what’s going on with AC Milan. 599 minutes without conceding and 13 games unbeaten before tonight. Arsenal making them look very average.
52: Close! Arsenal are nearly in dreamland after a horrific mistake from Kessie gifts the ball to Welbeck.
The striker drives forward but Donnarumma is quickly off his line to make the stop. Should be 3-0.
48: Granit Xhaka is never too far away from a fight. The midfielder and Kessie exchange a few verbals before the referee breaks it up.
45: And we’re back underway folks. Arsenal can’t afford any complacency here. Remember, we’re only at the quarter-way point in the tie.

AC MILAN 0-2 ARSENAL – RAMSEY
49: New contract for Arsene Wenger?
Arsenal are answering their critics in style as they double their advantage at the San Siro.
Aaron Ramsey bursts through the AC Milan defence, rounds Donnarumma and fires home. Cracking finish, and a cracking assist from Mesut Ozil.
46: Woodwork! Welbeck plays a ball worthy of Kevin De Bruyne over to Mkhitaryan but the ball has skimmed off the bar and over.
45: Danny! Welbeck does everything right when breaking through the line but his finish is so poor and Donnarumma comfortably gathers.
Bonucci rises highest to meet a corner ahead of Ospina, who flapped a little, but the defender guides it wide. Big chance to equalise before the break.
44: Nearly a very, very important second for the Gunners as Donnarumma is forced to palm away a Chambers drive from distance.
42: I don’t want to jinx it guys, but Arsenal are looking pretty comfortable here at the San Siro.
Mustafi and Koscielny are dealing with everything the hosts have to offer, and Wilshere is buzzing around causing all sorts of problems going forward.

39: Bonaventura curls the ball towards the far post but Suso didn’t gamble and Ospina watches it bounce wide.
36: Calhanoglu is caught late by Ramset and Milan have themselves a free-kick in a dangerous position, probably just outside shooting range.
The midfielder swings it in but Xhaka reads it and nods away.
33: Ouch! Ospina has just completely cleaned Mustafi out when punching a cross clear. I’m sure the goalkeeper’s union would approve of such actions.
I think the German will be fine. A few moments later Koscielny anticipates the run of Cutrone and executes a perfectly-timed challenge.
30: Wilshere has been causing all sorts of problems in that number 10 role. He’s just skipped through the defence to win a corner, which is cleared.
28: A simultaneous groan from 70,000 AC Milan fans as Calhanoglu breaks forward and passes is straight to Chambers. Frustration setting in.
25: Seven of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s last nine goals in all competitions have been scored in European fixtures (six in the Europa League and one in the Champions League).

23: Looks like Milan are going to make an early change. Oh wait. Right-back Calabria, who’s struggling to deal with Kolasinac and Mkhitaryan, has gone down twice but he’s decided to stay on the field.
20: Kolasinac with a Maradona turn in his own half? I’ve seen it all now. The Gunners need to play smart and protect this lead now.
We all saw what a North London team did against an Italian team last night…
AC MILAN 0-1 ARSENAL – MKHITARYAN
17: What a time and place to score your first goal for Arsenal.
Seconds after the penalty reprieve, the visitors have bagged themselves a vital away goal through Mkhitaryan.
The Armenia international cuts inside before unleashing a cracking effort that deflects off Bonucci and beats Donnarumma.
16: Calhanoglu proving that honesty is NOT the best policy sometimes. He’s beaten Ospina to the ball and should really hit the deck to win a penalty. Instead he stays on his feet and gives Arsenal a BIG reprieve.

AC Milan vs Arsenal LIVE updates: Latest Europa League action from the San Siro
13: Hardly an inspiring few minutes for Arsenal. Chambers gifts the ball to Calhanoglu before Cutrone collects the pass and lashes it wide.
Robbie Savage is baffled at Mustafi’s positioning there. Nowhere to be seen…
11: Close! Ozil and Wilshere exchange a few passes before it’s laid back to Mkhitaryan, who slams it into the side-netting.
9: Chambers is up and about again. Of course there’s no Mathieu Debuchy to turn to now. Bet Arsenal fans miss him every day…
6: Signs of improvement from Arsenal going forward. Ozil and Kolasinac combine nicely down the left but the return pass leaves the German with too much to do.
Pause in play with Chambers down. Looks like he’s taken a flailing elbow to the head from Calhanoglu. No malice in it.
3: Jack Wilshere has started in the number 10 position. Interesting to see how he’ll cope.
Anyway, AC Milan are straight on the front-foot with three early corners. Bonaventura nearly taps home a searching cross to the back post but it’s gone narrowly wide.
1: And we’re off! AC Milan look mighty fired up for this one. Will Arsenal wilt under the pressure, or rise to occasion?

‘WE NEED TO FIGHT’
17:50: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “It’s a two-game tie so we need to be good on both sides, defend well first because when teams lack a little bit of confidence you need reassurance. You need everyone to do a defensive job and of course go forward and score.
“Even with the changes you have to keep your philosophy but to play well you need confidence and sometimes when you miss it you have to do pragmatic things. When I speak about being pragmatic we also need to fight.”

“We have maximum respect for Arsenal. Only if we play a great game we will be able to avoid conceding goals.
“Compared to Wenger, I’m just a rookie. We are preparing for this match the best way we can. They are a very technical team that like to have the ball at all times. We must do well to hold them and to make them run when we have the ball.”

DANNY NEEDS TO DO WEL
17:35: With club-record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cup-tied and unable to face the team where he began his career and fellow big-money recruit Alexandre Lacazette still nursing a knee problem, Wenger has once again put his faith in England international Danny Welbeck.
The former Manchester United man failed to impress when he played as a striker in both legs of the previous round against Ostersund and has scored only once in his last 12 appearances for the Gunners.
He needs to address that to give Arsenal their best chance of leaving Italy with an away goal but – coming up against the likes of Leonardo Bonucci – it will certainly be a tough ask of the 27-year-old.
‘OPPORTUNITY WE HAVE TO TAKE’
17:30: Arsene Wenger says winning the Europa League is an opportunity his under-fire Arsenal side have to take.
The Frenchman has called on his players to step up and do just that as they look to stop their season petering out with two months of the campaign remaining.
“It makes me think about last year,” Wenger replied when asked if having a trophy to play for was similar to last season’s run to a third FA Cup success in four years.
“Last year we won the FA Cup, we made 75 points and missed out of the Champions League by one point.
“Seventy-five points is still a very good score what we will not reach this season. This is an opportunity we have to take, yes, of course.”

NEGATIVE SPIRAL
17:20: “We need to have positive voices in our heads because the brain dictates the body and the legs,” says Dr Laurent Koscielny.
Biology isn’t the Frenchman’s strongest suit…
Anyway, Koscielny quite rightly admits he and his team-mates are in a negative spiral, but has called for unity and thinks the mentality of the players needs addressing.
“We are disappointed with how we played. We need to be together. That’s the most important. It doesn’t matter what’s going on outside.
“We are in a negative spiral and it’s difficult to get out of this. We need to have positive voices in our heads because the brain dictates the body and the legs. We have to be positive to have a good result and step by step we will come back stronger.”

THE WALL…
17:15: While Milan may also be struggling for a return to the top, Gattuso at least has them well-organised defensively.
Since the turn of the year, Milan have only shipped three goals and have kept clean sheets in their last six games.
Compare that to Arsenal, who have conceded 25 goals during the same period and whose defenders looked bereft of confidence at Brighton this past weekend.
Add to that the absence of both first-choice full-backs through injury and the Premier League side will certainly need to improve in that department if they are to win this tie over the two legs.
ITALIAN JOB…
17:10: A beleaguered Wenger is now in a position where any negative result leads to increased calls for him to leave.
The 68-year-old would have heard his own supporters bellow “we want Wenger out” during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton – a fourth consecutive loss.
While the Frenchman has stressed all season that he wants to return to the Champions League by finishing in the top four, that now looks unlikely as they are 13 points adrift.
Therefore this competition takes on more importance, especially as the 3-0 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City means this is also the only chance of silverware this season.

TWITTER ROUND-UP
Doni: Urm, Danny Welbeck against Leonardo Bonucci? Arsenal have no shame.
Matthew: Bit of advice for Danny Welbeck tonight. Try aiming the ball at the corner flag and it might just go in the goal!
Tommy: Where is Ainsley Maitland-Niles? Surely he should start over Callum Chambers! Also, what the hell does Granit Xhaka have to do to be dropped?!
TEAM NEWS
17:00: Looks like three changes for Arsene Wenger tonight.
Aaron Ramsey returns to the starting XI having been rested for the trip to the Amex Stadium on Sunday. He’s in for Alex Iwobi.
He’s joined by Danny Welbeck and David Ospina, who replace the ineligible Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Petr Cech.
Callum Chambers will be deployed at right-back with Hector Bellerin absent. The Gunners will be playing with four at the back.

BELLERIN UPDATE
16:50: Sadly Arsenal have no Hector Bellerin tonight. He suffered a knee injury in training did not travel with the squad to Italy.
But in true Arsenal fashion, he’s taken to social media to provide an update.
Bellerin wrote on Twitter: “Disappointed not to be fit for tonight and help the boys in a massive game for us. Been carrying this injury for a while but hoping to recover soon.”
One fan responded: “Thank goodness you’re not playing but I wish you all the best on recovery.” Charming…

WELCOME
16:40: Good afternoon folks, welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Europa League.
“We can’t lose again, we have to win the Europa League, Arsene Wenger should leave if we don’t,” sounds like the general gist coming from the Arsenal camp.
But that’s a task easier said than done when you’re playing a resurgent AC Milan, who haven’t conceded a goal in over 540 minutes of action.
Yes, that’s six games of football…
A tournament that was initially received with moans and groans has suddenly become the be all and end all for Arsenal.
Can they avoid a fifth defeat in a row, or will they crumble under the pressure and finish the season battling it out with Burnley for sixth position?
