President Joe Biden speaks outside Independence Hall, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, in Philadelphia.

  • President Joe Biden on Thursday delivered a speech on the "battle for the soul of the nation."
  • The president assailed "MAGA Republicans," who he said are determined to take the country backwards.
  • "For a long time, we've reassured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed," he said. "But it is not.

With some of his strongest statements yet, President Joe Biden assailed "MAGA Republicans" in a rare prime-time speech on Thursday evening, as he spoke of an impending "battle for the soul of the nation," just two months ahead of the November midterm elections.

Though his administration advertised the speech as an official White House event and not a campaign event, Biden's televised comments come as he works to drum up support for Democratic lawmakers in an effort to help his party maintain control of Congress.

Biden delivered his remarks from the Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday night, channeling the venue's "sacred" history in his early statements.

"Tonight I have come here to the place where it all began to speak plainly as I can to the nation about the threats we face, about the power we have in our hands to meet these threats," he said. "And about the incredible future that lies in front of us if only we choose it."

Biden has mostly avoided using Trump's name in recent speeches, but by naming him Thursday, he offered a more pointed attack at the former president and his supporters, accusing them of embracing extremism.

"MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards. Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love," Biden said. "They promote authoritarian leaders and fan the flames of political violence."

The president acknowledged that the majority of Republicans are not the type of people about which he was talking, but said the current Republican Party is undoubtedly "dominated, driven, and intimidated by MAGA Republicans," and called it a threat to our country.

"For a long time, we've told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us," the president said.

Biden went off-script at one point to describe "darkness like you're hearing in that bullhorn," referring to protests outside the hall.

He urged the country to come together and unite behind a single purpose in rejecting MAGA ideology, while castigating insurrectionists and stressing the danger of undermining election integrity.

"There's no place for political violence in America," he said to applause from the crowd.

In a statement shared with Insider, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Biden's "wretched attacks" on millions of Americans are fueling division in the country.

"His agenda has pitted neighbors against each other, rewarded the wealthy while punishing working families, and trampled on the rights and freedoms of Americans," McDaniel said. "Joe Biden is the divider-in-chief and epitomizes the current state of the Democrat Party: one of divisiveness, disgust, and hostility towards half the country."

The president's comments come just days after he suggested at a Democratic fundraiser that the ideology of the MAGA Republicans who have embraced former President Donald Trump's worldview have paved the way for "semi-fascism" in the country.

Biden also took time during the speech to highlight some of his legislative successes, including a gun safety law and a recent healthcare reform and climate package, and made promises for the future, including ending cancer and providing more clean jobs.

"Democracy must be defended, for democracy makes all these things possible," he said.

The president ended his speech by encouraging people to "vote, vote, vote," and made mention of doing "our duty" in 2022 and beyond.

But whether or not most Americans heard Biden's plea remains unclear. The three primary broadcasting networks chose not to carry his speech, opting to show their regular-scheduled programming instead.

The FBI has reportedly questioned USA Really head Alexander Malkevich at Washington airport after his trip to cover the midterm elections. The Russian mission in the US has requested information on the incident.

“In connection with media reports concerning the detention of Russian journalist Alexander Malkevich by FBI officers in Washington airport, an inquiry regarding the circumstances of the event was sent to the US Department of State,” it said.

Malkevich, a member of the Russian Civic Chamber, was an observer during the November 6 elections in the US state of Maryland, according to the chamber’s website.

On Thursday, he said that the scale of violations in states ruled by Democrats had “deeply shocked” him. The next day, several FBI agents approached him in the airport “like in the movies,” and asked him to follow them, he told Federal News Agency (FAN).

The agents searched Malkevich’s luggage and questioned him for around half an hour. They suggested that he had better cooperate with them, he recounted.

Today, smart takes on Tuesday’s mid-term elections, a round-up of old-school movie hucksterism, and a investigation of what happened to pop-y pop music.

Kristin Hunt on classic Hollywood publicity stunts.

Movie marketing has become quite the color-inside-the-lines endeavor: teaser, trailer, TV spots, print ads, “viral videos.” It’s effective, predictable, and boring. At Vulture, Hunt casts an eye back at the good ol’ days of ballyhoo, in which publicity men hailed not from Wharton but the midway, and sold their pictures accordingly:

In this ’50s thriller, Joseph Stalin never died. It was all just a ruse to give the Russian dictator cover to flee to a secret hideaway, with a brand new face from a plastic surgeon. But before making his escape, Stalin punishes a young prisoner by shaving off all her hair. This scene serves as the opening to The Girl in the Kremlin, which Universal promoted by shaving heads on the street. At San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theater, a 24-year-old housewife and mother named Patricia Smith hopped in a barber chair for a dramatic haircut. Universal gave her $ 300 for letting them shave her head as the cameras rolled — and a wig to wear until her hair grew back.

Jayson Greene on morose pop.

“Aren’t pop songs generally meant to lift us up?” asks Pitchfork’s Greene, noting that the current Billboard charts are dominated by music that “sounds submerged, cloudy, groggy, pained, dour,” full of lyrics concerned with misery and despair. “How and when did things turn so morose?” he asks.

The armchair-cultural-anthropologist answer is the easiest one: Everything is garbage! Who wants to celebrate when the world is crumbling? It’s a seductive explanation. After all, many of us are currently grappling with the reality that the Earth will probably be partially drowned within the next four or five presidential administrations (assuming presidential administrations keep happening). Despite whatever famed optimist and Harvard cognitive scientist Steven Pinker might be peddling, most of us, no matter our politics, are united by the overwhelming sensation that Things Really Aren’t Going Great. As citizens, we are more pessimistic, more distrustful, more anxious. We are angrier. We are more fearful.

In this sense, the pop charts are just mirroring back our internal climate. Wouldn’t it make sense that we wouldn’t be clamoring for FUN! to run around screaming in our faces? When confronted with terms like “climate genocide,” who really wants to party like it’s their last night on Earth?

The Onion does Election Day.

One reason for our perpetual moroseness: our politics! We had a big mid-term election on Tuesday (hope this isn’t news to you) and, as usual, The Onion was right on their game; this particular “news in brief” item has held up all week, what with the extended battle for the Georgia governorship and reports of voting irregularities across the state:

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA—Insisting that the machine was operating exactly as intended, Georgia election worker Mitchell Hamlin reportedly assured a black man on Tuesday that the ballot scanner was supposed to sound like a shredder. “Don’t you worry, it’s designed to sound like it’s ripping your ballot into thousands of tiny pieces,” the election worker informed the middle-aged African American resident, adding that it was merely a coincidence that several white voters in front of him had been directed to insert their ballots into a different scanner. “You should absolutely be hearing a constant whirring and shredding sound—that’s the machine’s way of telling you that your vote counts. And that bucket below where the ballot scanner is dropping strips of paper? That’s simply the machine producing a receipt so we know it went through to the right place. Congratulations, you definitely voted today.” At press time, Hamlin stated that he could also confirm the man’s registration for the 2020 election if he just handed over his driver’s license.

Jamelle Bouie on why young people don’t vote.

In election after election, we see horrifying statistics of low turnout among the youngest of eligible voters. They’re usually shamed for it, and to some extent, that’s appropriate. But over at Slate, Bouie digs deeper, examining how much of the inherent qualities of life for millennials translate into difficulty participating in a system that doesn’t seem all that interested in including them:

With each account, we have a different example of how our voting system doesn’t actually encourage voting, especially among people whose lives are a defined by a certain amount of instability and unpredictability. Look beyond young adults to the larger population of nonvoters and you see a significant group whose lives are marked by traits associated with a lack of stability. They are less likely to have college degrees, more likely to have family incomes below $ 30,000, and more likely to belong to racial and ethnic minorities, making them more likely to experience conditions associated with instability.

Our system has adopted universal suffrage, which points toward open and easy access to the ballot, but our heritage in political exclusivity—where voting was once a privilege reserved for property-owning white men—continues to influence our handling of elections. Voter identification laws are tied to a sordid history of discrimination and vote suppression, but even procedures as uncontroversial as voter registration contain assumptions about who should participate. (Indeed, voter registration was first developed as a method to keep recent immigrants and the poor from the ballot box in Northern cities and was used similarly against black Americans in the Jim Crow South.) Our voting system is tilted toward people with stable, conventional lives. And that, overwhelmingly, is who participates, producing a conservative bias in the status quo.

From dumpster fires to deportation buses: The midterms’ craziest campaign ads https://briefnews.eu/from-dumpster-fires-to-deportation-buses-the-midterms-craziest-campaign-ads/ https://briefnews.eu/from-dumpster-fires-to-deportation-buses-the-midterms-craziest-campaign-ads/#respond Sun, 04 Nov 2018 19:14:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/from-dumpster-fires-to-deportation-buses-the-midterms-craziest-campaign-ads/

American politics has always been about spectacle, and with Tuesday’s midterm elections watched closer than any in recent memory, candidates have been dredging the bottom of the barrel for creative and attention-grabbing ideas.

Here we take a look back at the political ads that, for better or worse, stood out from the pack during this election season.

Richard Painter lights a dumpster fire

Washington DC has been called a ‘dumpster fire’ more times than lazy journalists have used bad similes. In case the comparison makes no sense, former George W. Bush ethics counsel and Minnesota Senate candidate Richard Painter demonstrated it visually this summer.

“Some people see a dumpster fire and do nothing but watch the spectacle,” Painter deadpans to the camera, as he stands in front of an actual, flaming dumpster. “Some are too scared to face the danger. Or they think it’ll benefit them if they just let it keep on burning.

“There is an inferno raging in Washington. But here in the land of 10,000 lakes – we know how to put out a fire,” he says, as a torrent of water pours down from above and extinguishes the flames.

Painter’s unflinching stare borders on intimidating, and the steely eyed Senate hopeful was ridiculed online for his ad. Painter didn’t scare anyone into voting for him, and he captured only 13 percent of the Democratic vote in his party’s primary election in August, falling way behind businesswoman Tina Smith’s 76 percent take.

Ron DeSantis shows off his parenting skills

Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis’ race against progressive, Bernie Sanders-endorsed hotshot Andrew Gillum has been described as a kind of litmus test for America. Endorsed by the president, DeSantis has been keen to show off just how devoted he is to following Trump’s agenda, at work and at home.

In an August campaign video, DeSantis enjoys an array of wholesome activities with his children, like teaching his daughter to “build the wall,” and reading President Trump’s ‘The Art of the Deal’ to his infant son.

“Then Mister Trump said, ‘You’re fired,’” he tells the boy. “I love that part.” The adoring father then teaches his daughter to read “Make America Great Again” from a campaign poster.

DeSantis’ campaign has since been stained by racial controversy, but the race to the governor’s mansion remains a tight one. Polls currently put Gillum ahead by two points.

All aboard the deportation bus

Michael Williams, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, knows how to make a statement. In a video since pulled by YouTube for ‘hate speech’ violations, Williams steps off a prison transport bus rebranded as the ‘deportation bus,’ promising to “fill this bus with illegals to send them back to where they came from.”

“We’re not just gonna track them and watch them roam around our state. We’re gonna put them on this bus and send ‘em home!”

The bus itself is emblazoned with a warning that reads “DANGER! Murderers, rapists, kidnappers, child molestors, and other criminals on board,” as well as “Follow me to Mexico.”

Naturally, Twitter reacted with shock, bewilderment, and accusations of racism.

While Williams’ bus toured the length and breadth of the state of Georgia drumming up support for his hardline anti-immigration platform, the message fell flat. Williams came in last place in his party’s primary election in May, capturing only five percent of the vote.

Republican hit with a fantasy endorsement from Russia

It wouldn’t be a list of crazy campaign ads without bringing in the Democratic party’s tired attempt to blame the world’s ills on Russia. In this case, a Democratic PAC released a parody ad, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulates Republican House candidate Dana Rohrabacher for his loyalty to the motherland.

“You are a true Russian hero,” a proud female voiceover reads. “Thank you Dana Rohrabacher for standing with Putin and Russia!”

Rohrabacher and Democratic opponent Harley Rouda are currently neck-and-neck in the polls, despite the Democratic PAC’s spot of Russophobic meddling.

Dan Helmer rides into the danger zone

House Democratic candidate Dan Helmer’s ill-advised attempt to recreate his favorite ‘Top Gun’ scene has it all: pumping music, a grand entrance, and cringe-inducing singing.

Decked out in aviators and a bomber jacket, Helmer rides up to a bar on his motorcycle. So far, so badass. Inside, he spots Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock and launches into a crudely reworded and tuneless rendition of ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.’

Among other shoehorned lyrics: “You’ve lost that centrist feeling… ’cause you’ve been right-wing appealing.”

Helmer’s video didn’t take voters’ breath away, and the high-flying democrat lost out to State Senator Jennifer Wexton in Virginia’s Democratic primary in June.

Honorable mentions

The shortlist of ill-advised campaign videos is infinite, with candidates all across the country seemingly eager to create scandal and embarrass themselves in front of millions of potential voters.

Honorable mentions that didn’t quite make the cut include this Colorado House candidate pepper spraying himself to stop school shootings; this Georgia Republican’s guns, trucks and chainsaws conservative manifesto; and this West Virginia Republican’s assertion that Senate Majority Leader “Cocaine Mitch” McConnell has created “millions of jobs for Chinapeople.”

Green wave: Record spending makes 2018 US midterms ‘most expensive ever’ https://briefnews.eu/green-wave-record-spending-makes-2018-us-midterms-most-expensive-ever/ https://briefnews.eu/green-wave-record-spending-makes-2018-us-midterms-most-expensive-ever/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 22:53:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/green-wave-record-spending-makes-2018-us-midterms-most-expensive-ever/ Democrats are pouring record amounts of money into congressional midterm elections this year, hoping to gain control of the House and the Senate, with the GOP close behind. But will big spending translate to ballot box victory?

Democrats are pinning their hopes on a “Blue Wave” that would give them control of both the House and the Senate and ensure deadlock in Washington for the next two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. Trump has sought to counter that by holding campaign rallies like in 2016 and urging his supporters to put more Republicans in Congress. Whatever the final outcome, the election will certainly cost a lot of green.

“A wave of money is surging toward Election Day, much of it coming from the wealthiest donors targeting this year’s most competitive races,” Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, said Monday.

CRP projections show more than $ 5.2 billion in spending this election cycle, in what they say will be the most expensive midterms ever. No prior midterm has ever cost more than $ 4.2 billion, even adjusted for inflation.

Democrats are leading the spending spree with an estimated $ 2.5 billion, while Republicans are expected to spend about $ 2.2 billion, the CRP said. Democrats are outspending the GOP $ 951 million to $ 637 million in the House races, and $ 513 million to $ 361 million in the Senate.

Republican mega-donors are actually outpacing the Democrat ones, according to data the CRP got from the Federal Election Commission. Casino and media mogul Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam have so far spent $ 113 million on backing GOP candidates, $ 20 million more than in 2012.

Meanwhile, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent $ 38 million to back Democrats – a bit short of the $ 100 million he promised. Tom Steyer, funder of the ad campaign calling for President Trump’s impeachment, has spent almost $ 51 million on midterm races, less than in 2014 and 2016.

READ MORE: Trump calls Democratic Party megadonor ‘lunatic’, Resistance erupts

“Whether you’re looking at donations from women, large donors, small donors, dark money groups, parties, or unions, the Democrats are seeing incredible success in fundraising this cycle,” according to Sarah Bryner, research director at the CRP.

For the first time since 2006, the securities and investment industry is favoring Democrats over Republicans, 52 to 46 percent, the CRP data shows. The education industry more than doubled their spending this year to $ 71 million, 88 percent of which went to Democrats – up from 74 percent in 2014.

The big question on everyone’s lips is whether this fundraising and spending advantage is actually going to translate into victories on November 6. During the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton raised and spent far more money than Trump – $ 1.19 billion to his $ 646 million, according to post-electoral tallies by Bloomberg. When the dust settled, Clinton had less than $ 8 million left in her war chest, while Trump sat on $ 31.5 million or so – and the presidency of the United States.

Last week, Twitter released data from accounts that had been identified as part of Russian and Iranian influence campaigns, including efforts by Russia to influence the political climate in the United States before, during, and after the 2016 presidential campaign. Hours later, the US Department of Justice announced the indictment of a 44-year-old Russian woman accused of directing ongoing influence campaigns on social media platforms targeting the US midterm congressional elections.

Both Twitter’s data and the indictment are data points in the history of “Project Lakhta,” a wide-ranging campaign to shape the political and cultural discussions in Russia, Ukraine, Western Europe, and the United States. The campaign started began in earnest in 2014, though the Internet Research Agency’s efforts date back even further in Russia. The Internet Research Agency, also known as the IRA, was but one of several organizations enlisted in these efforts; the operation also enlisted a number of media organizations, including the Federal News Agency (FAN). FAN operates the “USA Really” propaganda site, which was launched earlier this year, as well as associated social media accounts that have been leveraged as part of the campaign.

According to the FBI affidavit that led to the indictment of Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova last week, Khusyanova managed the financing of the organizations under the Project Lakhta umbrella and funneled $ 35 million to various entities to fund social media and propaganda operations. These activities in the US included covering the expenditures of “activists,” purchasing advertisements on social media platforms with faked US identities, operating proxy servers in the US, and “promoting news postings on social networks.”
