The clip from “Resting Witch Face” (marking the show’s move to a new timeslot at 8/7c) shows Manfred questioning Kiva (played by Mindy Sterling, The Goldbergs and the Austin Powers films), a ghost who’s got beef with his grandma, Xylda — mainly because she’s crossed over to a better place, and Kiva hasn’t.

Midnight Texas Season 2 Episode 7 Video“If you can help me explain this curse, maybe i can help you,” Manfred offers, hoping to glean information about a spell he fears Kai is plotting. But the specter isn’t listening… because she’s caught a glimpse of Lem, who’s watching the proceedings along with Olivia. And Kiva likes what she sees.

While the apparition waxes poetic about the size of Lem’s, um, appendages, we’ll tell you a few things about the hour. Manfred is on a tear as he vows revenge for Creek’s death. Joe is desperate to get to Chuy before his demon side does any more damage. Fiji wears a really excellent cocktail dress (and has a blast at Cartoon Saloon), though that’s not all she’s up to. And Kai gives Patience an ultimatum. Hmm… whatever could that be about?

Press PLAY on the video above to see how Manfred’s seance turns out.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Midnight, Texas Season 2 Premiere Recap: Dead Manfred Walking https://briefnews.eu/midnight-texas-season-2-premiere-recap-dead-manfred-walking/ https://briefnews.eu/midnight-texas-season-2-premiere-recap-dead-manfred-walking/#respond Sat, 27 Oct 2018 05:24:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/midnight-texas-season-2-premiere-recap-dead-manfred-walking/ It’s been a while since we’ve set foot in Midnight, Texas, but don’t worry: The little Lone Star town is just as full of lovable weirdos and certain-death scenarios as you remember.

Friday’s Season 2 premiere finds Manfred still trying (and mostly failing) to shake off the effects of the demonic possession that allowed him to defeat Colcannar in the Season 1 finale. You’ll have to forgive his friends if they don’t immediately pick up on his odd behavior, because a) this is Midnight, b) they’re too busy getting nekkid with their significant others, c) they’re distracted by the arrival of the town’s new hoteliers and d) he hides it really well… until he doesn’t.

Also? XYLDA IS BACK AND ALL IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD.

Read on for the highlights of “Head Games.”

CREEK DREAMS | Two months after the whole Colcannar debacle, Manfred walks down Main Street in just his undies and a pair of workboots, dragging a shovel behind him and looking pretty menacing. We watch him dig a hole in the ground, and then he’s back at the house, glowering over Creek’s sleeping form. Suddenly, it’s morning, and Manfred is the one in bed, startling awake from what seems like a nightmare. Creek enters with coffee and a We Need to Talk look on her face.

“I’m not sure that staying in Midnight is the best thing for me,” she tells him, adding that she’s applied to a writing program and wants him to leave Midnight with her if the program accepts her. He replies with a sound that I will attempt to transcribe here: “ughhshhherhhhhhoooahhh,” which Creek interprets as a “no.” But he rallies, draws her near and promises that “Home is where you are.” She’s relieved, and they go to kiss but she stops it when she notices that his nose is bleeding.

But that’s not blood. It’s more of that black goo we saw leaking from the psychic’s ears at the end of the Season 1 finale. As he wipes it away in the bathroom, he also notices that there’s dirt under his nails and mud on his boots: That dream wasn’t a dream after all.

Midnight Texas Premiere Season 2 Episode 1 Head GamesCOUPLES CHECK-IN! | Elsewhere in town, Fiji and Bobo have floaty sex that ends with both of them crashing to the bed in afterglow, something that disgusts Mr. Snuggly when he happens to walk by the bedroom. “You got skills, girl,” Bobo says appreciatively, and I know it’s five minutes into the premiere, but they are so cute and in love and therefore I AM AFRAID FOR THEM.

Midnight Texas Premiere Season 2 Episode 1 Head GamesOver at Olivia and Lem’s place, she returns from a hit, takes off her disguise and puts on her wedding ring. She wakes up her vampire life partner, and they, too, are pretty adorable as they greet each other as “husband” and “wife.” Later in the episode, we’ll learn that he can now sense her thoughts and feelings, courtesy of her drinking his blood in the season finale. And that new psychic connection seems like a great thing when he has a drink ready and bubble bath drawn when Olivia comes home cranky — and it’s an even better thing when he kisses her and then drops out of frame, causing her to make this face (see photo at right).

On a stretch of road outside town, Chuy meditates while Joe goes for a run. Dude, if even angels need to exercise to keep their heavenly bodies in shape, what hope is there for the rest of us? (Apologies if you were at the show’s New York Comic Con panel and already heard this joke, but I’m rather proud of it so I’m using it again.)

WHO ARE THE NEWBIES? | Now let’s get down to spooky business. Manfred is hearing voices that tell him to do bad stuff to Creek and his friends, but he doesn’t mention this rather troubling news when the gang gathers at Home Cookin’. (Side note: I do love a good supernatural friends power breakfast. See also: Angel, Cordelia and Wesley in Angel Season 1. “After an all-nighter of fighting the lurking evil, we get eggs!”)

Olivia brings the informal meeting to order, because they’ve got to discuss the Crystal Desert, aka the hotel and spa being run by Midnight newcomers Kai and Patience. The business’ website refers to Kai as a “healer,” but Olivia is dubious. Throughout the discussion, Manfred is having a hard time concentrating on the matter at hand. But he tells everyone not to worry: The hotel is haunted, and the ghosts are going to drive out all the customers and kill Kai and Patience’s business. “Well, ghosts or not, we are going to that grand opening,” Olivia decrees.

Midnight Texas Premiere Season 2 Episode 1 Head GamesLater, Manfred drives the camper out into the desert, Googles “demonic nosebleeds” — ha! — and eventually figures out that he’s been walking 7 miles outside of town each night to dig eight graves “for your friends,” Xylda (yay!) observes when she suddenly reappears, confirming what he feared: This ain’t good.

The rather posh and well-rested Xylda informs Manfred that she did, indeed, cross over to some kind of celestial oasis (where “rosé all day” is one of the perks!), but she’s back to help him with the dreams that started after his “demon gang bang.” The pair determine that he’s not possessed, but then Manfred has to run: He’s got to be at the hotel’s big event.

BUSINESS IS BOOMING | Everyone attends the grand opening, though a territorial Fiji scoffs at the prices of the various crystals on sale. Patience Lucero comes over to introduce herself, explaining that she and her husband, Kai, were a “spiritual traveling circus” that was looking to put down stakes, and Midnight’s energy convinced them it was the right place to settle.

Manfred is there for all of two minutes before he vividly imagines drowning The Rev in the lobby’s decorative pool, so he bails. Then Kai comes out among a procession of devotees, walks on water and seems to heal a man in a wheelchair who says he wants to be able to walk at his daughter’s wedding. Everyone claps, and The Rev looks like he’s impressed, but Fiji and Olivia are suspicious.

Remember the bar where Bobo’s racist friends used to drink? He bought it, so the Cartoon Saloon is the newest hangout for the Midnighters. Joe’s a bartender. Lem is the bouncer. “I still can’t believe you took a watering hole for Nazis and turned it into Cheers,” Fiji says adoringly when she shows up to give her boyfriend a key to her house. (He accepts with great enthusiasm.)

In the corner, Manfred drinks himself into a stupor and then calls the cops on himself, ensuring he’ll get thrown in jail, which will mean he can’t hurt his friends after he goes to sleep. The plan seems to work… until he wakes up in his own bed, Creek is nowhere to be found, and there’s blood all over the sheets. He freaks out — but she’s just at work, and the blood is likely from a cut on his hand.

GONE BABY GONE | While reading Xylda’s uncle’s journal in the trailer, Manfred sees an entry that describes what’s happening to him. So he and his grandma summon the uncle, who explains that possession can leave a demonic residue that eventually takes over his brain. The solution? Kill yourself before you kill anyone else, says the ghost.

Not long after, Manfred breaks into the pawn shop and steals a whole bunch of weapons. And when Xylda starts encouraging him to kill Creek, he dejectedly realizes that he’s hallucinating. “It’s too late, isn’t it?” he asks. Answer? Yep.

Midnight Texas Premiere Season 2 Episode 1 Head GamesHELLO, COWBOY | Over at the Saloon, a demon gunning for Joe jumps him when the angel takes out the trash. The demon has friends, and Joe is taking a beating, but he suddenly gets a helping hand from a stranger in a cowboy hat. As the man fights by Joe’s side, eventually besting the demon bullies, he introduces himself: His name is Walker Chisum, he’s human, he knows who and what Joe is, and he’s got a kickass demon-heart-grabber-gadget thing.

Did I mention that Walker is handsome? Because he’s handsome.

KAI EX MACHINA | Home by herself, Creek notices black blood on some towels in the bathroom. She snaps a pic and texts it to Fiji, adding “Something’s wrong with Manfred.” But before she can leave, she runs into her boyfriend in the living room. He’s got a knife. He’s being mean. And pretty soon, he’s got her tied up and knocked out in the back of her car.

He then tricks Olivia into helping him look for Creek, whom he claims is missing. But when they drive out to the spot where he dug the graves, the hitwoman notices black, demon-y veins on the back of his neck and tries to wrestle him to the ground. Manfred bests her, dragging her unconscious body to one of the plots and dumping her in. Back at the car, the trunk is now empty. “I’m claustrophobic, you d–k!” Creek yells, slamming the shovel upside his skull. There’s a tussle for the car keys that ends with Manfred choking Creek, and it’s looking bleak until Lem appears, leaching Manfred until he passes out and drops his girlfriend. In case you were wondering, the vampire was summoned by his psychic connection with Olivia — who’s fine, by the way — and the three of them somehow get Manfred back to the Saloon and tied to a chair.

Midnight Texas Premiere Season 2 Episode 1 Head GamesBy the time everyone else shows up, Manfred is raving and black-bleeding from the eyes. Fiji’s magic isn’t making a dent in the demonic cancer’s spread; when the true Manfred surfaces for a moment, he tearfully begs Creek to kill him before he hurts someone. Then The Rev shows up with Kai and Patience in tow.

Kai approaches Manfred, saying, “Be at peace, brother,” and places a hand on his head. Everything goes silent for a moment, then Manfred looks up at the ceiling and vomits a spectacular geyser of gross black goo. Kai kinda kisses him (yeah, I don’t know), drawing the last of the poison from Manfred’s body, and that’s it: Manfred belches, and he is healed.

GETTING AHEAD OF OURSELVES | Everyone — even Olivia — is grateful to the newcomers. But when Manfred gets home, he finds Creek packing. “I’ve reached my limit with Midnight and with you,” she tells him, saying she’s got to make a new start… alone. Manfred sadly tells her he loves her. “Then let me go,” she responds.

Over at Fiji’s place, things are a lot happier. “You’re my soul, Fiji Kavanaugh,” he tells her. “And you’re mine, Bobo Winthrop,” she says. But as the camera pulls back, we can see that all of the plant life in the house withers and dies as they kiss. Uh-oh.

Back at Crystal Desert, Kai approaches a painting that we saw him talking to earlier. But this time, the painting opens up to reveal a skull (not human) in a cage. “I will avenge you,” Kai promises the head.

Now it’s your turn. Grade the premiere via the poll below, then hit the comments with your thoughts on the episode!

The 50-year-old IT worker from Hale, Cheshire, just a few miles away, said: “Our friend’s daughter was flying alone for the first time and had already been delayed two hours so we said we’d pick her up.

“She said she’d get a cab, but we said, ‘No, we’ll come and get you. It’s no hassle.’ Famous last words! We live around the corner and pick people up at the airport about half a dozen times a year.

“We had to queue for a car park that was rammed. People were struggling to find spaces.

“We found one and got our ticket. We were no more than 10 minutes.

“But by the time we got back to the car, we were blocked in because people were just stopping in the driving sections, picking people up.

“There were normal cars, Ubers, taxis… it was chaos.

“We eventually queued for a machine to pay our fee but there was only one pay machine and about 10 people waiting. It was taking about five minutes for every person.

“The whole thing was a traffic jam. There were drivers trying to come in, people trying to pay, some parked up.

“I’ve never seen such chaos and it was half-past midnight – not a peak time.

“It was so stressful, the worst experience I’ve ever had there and there were people there with young children.

“It’s just a money earner.”

The Tasty Joys of Midnight Meals in Taiwan https://briefnews.eu/the-tasty-joys-of-midnight-meals-in-taiwan/ https://briefnews.eu/the-tasty-joys-of-midnight-meals-in-taiwan/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 07:00:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-tasty-joys-of-midnight-meals-in-taiwan/ It’s a godless hour and dripping wet in Keelung, a port city off the northern coast of Taiwan. But the narrow alleys are still jammed with people, elbow to elbow, jostling at the closet-size night market stalls to place their orders. Competing for their attention: steaming beef noodle soup, sizzling oyster pancakes, honey-sweet pearl milk tea, fermented stinky tofu, and comically, fat pork sausages or mini sweet potato balls. Welcome to a foodie’s final resting place.

If New York is the city that never sleeps, then Taiwan must be the island that never gets full. Most people have three meals a day, but Taiwan worships food so much that there’s a fourth and final meal: xiaoye (宵夜) or midnight snacks. Combine this late-night eating tradition with renao (熱鬧) — the “hot and noisy” aspect of life that is cherished by Taiwanese — and you’ll get even tiny towns like Keelung serving night market food into the wee hours of the morning. “Taiwanese people love food more than anything … as long as it’s delicious, new and trendy,” says Charlene Yang, a food blogger based in Taipei.

Eating out is so convenient and cheap (usually less than $ 10) that many don’t bother cooking at home.

But why the determined night-owl hunt for food? There are a few factors according to National Taiwan Normal University professor Chen Yu-Jen, who researches the culture and history of cuisine in Taiwan. Back in the 1980s, Taiwan’s xiaoye scene was mostly a “lively underground economy,” but nowadays, midnight snacking has turned into a more formal affair — even an ingrained part of mainstream culture. Eating out is so convenient and cheap (usually less than $ 10) that many don’t bother cooking at home.

And the sheer variety on offer — foods with historical Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, American and Chinese roots — is enough to draw everyone from late-working office workers to “cram school” students, says Leslie Liu, a popular Taiwanese food Instagrammer. Plus “people go out not just because of the food, but because the food also creates a lively, one-of-a-kind atmosphere,” adds Liu.

So if you’re coming to Taiwan, open your mouth wide once you arrive, and don’t close it again until your return flight home. The goal here is to fill your body with food and culture until you explode. But do brace yourself for large, noisy crowds. The experience may be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with the hustle and bustle of Taiwan’s midnight scene or the mind-boggling number of choices on every menu.

But we’ve got you covered. Here’s your insider’s guide to late-night cravings in and around Taipei.

Go There: The Night Market That’s Right for You

  • For the seafood fanatic: Keelung Night Market. Eat this: wide noodle soup with mushrooms, fried tiger lillies, oysters and shrimp (鼎邊銼)
  • For all-around good eats: Raohe Night Market. Eat this: pork pepper buns (胡椒餅), squid soup with fragrant basil (魷魚及九層塔)
  • For a sweet tooth: Tonghua Night Market. Eat this: sweet rice balls filled with peanuts and drenched with osmanthus syrup (湯圓), tofu pudding (豆花)
  • For the budget eater: Shida Night Market. Eat this: Hong Kong–style pineapple buns with a pat of sweet butter (冰火菠蘿), minced pork–stuffed dumplings (生煎包)
  • For the fried food lover: Ningxia Night Market: Eat this: oyster omelet (蚵仔煎), deep fried taro balls with salted egg yolk (蛋黃芋餅)
  • For the adventurous: Huaxi Street Night Market (or Snake Alley). Eat this: snake soup (死肉湯), snake bile, snake semen and snake blood shots

Chevy Tahoe Custom Midnight Special Edition is the Johnny Cash of SUVs https://briefnews.eu/chevy-tahoe-custom-midnight-special-edition-is-the-johnny-cash-of-suvs/ https://briefnews.eu/chevy-tahoe-custom-midnight-special-edition-is-the-johnny-cash-of-suvs/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 05:13:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chevy-tahoe-custom-midnight-special-edition-is-the-johnny-cash-of-suvs/

The Chevrolet Tahoe is the latest arrow in the Bowtie brand’s quiver to be unsheathed in Midnight trim. As with all of Chevy’s Midnight models, this Tahoe is fully blacked out. And, since it’s based on the Custom trim, which comes without a third row of seats, the Tahoe Midnight is a five-seater. Cargo space behind the second row is listed at 54 cubic feet, with a maximum of 112 cubes with all the seats folded flat.

In order to qualify for the Midnight name, the Tahoe Custom gets 18-inch painted black wheels fitted with an aggressive set of Goodyear Wrangler tires, a black grille, off-road assist steps, and black bowtie emblems. Besides those exterior modifications, the Midnight is just like any other Chevy Tahoe.

A 5.3-liter V8 engine spins out 355 horsepower and nets an EPA-estimated 23 miles per gallon on the highway. The max towing rating stands at 6,600 pounds. It will be offered in standard rear-wheel-drive guise, or with optional four-wheel drive. Want one? All you’ve got to do is show up at your nearest Chevrolet dealership this spring with $ 45,995 in hand. For those keeping track, that’s a thousand bucks more than the standard Tahoe Custom.

Puns, poison and… the World Cup? The UK papers react to May’s midnight deadline https://briefnews.eu/puns-poison-and-the-world-cup-the-uk-papers-react-to-mays-midnight-deadline/ https://briefnews.eu/puns-poison-and-the-world-cup-the-uk-papers-react-to-mays-midnight-deadline/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 10:06:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/puns-poison-and-the-world-cup-the-uk-papers-react-to-mays-midnight-deadline/

As May’s midnight deadline for Moscow to ‘explain’ itself over the Salisbury attack approaches, the UK newspapers have gone into overdrive. Nearly every front page is asking: What next for the UK-Russia relationship?

Every paper from the Financial Times to the Daily Express had Russian President Vladimir Putin’s face emblazoned across its front page. While some headlines were straight down the line, others employed that famous British wit: “From Russia with hate” and “We’ve Vlad enough,” just to name a few.

The real story: Theresa May issues ultimatum to Russia, Putin over nerve-agent attack

On Monday afternoon, Theresa May took to the House of Commons to address the issue on everyone’s lips – the poisoning of ex-Russian double agent Sergei Skripal, 66, and his daughter, Yulia, 33.

May asserted to the Commons that the type of nerve agent used was a military-grade substance called Novichok. “There are only two plausible explanations for what happened in Salisbury on March 4,” she said.

“Either this was a direct act by the Russian state against our country,” May said. “Or the Russian government lost control of this potentially catastrophically damaging nerve agent and allowed it to get into the hands of others.” Moscow has already called May’s claims “unfounded.”

The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Times, and the Daily Express all ran headlines on May’s midnight deadline for Putin. “May accuses Russia over attack on spy and threatens reprisals,” says the FT. The Guardian ran with “May points finger at Russia over ‘reckless’ poisoning of spy.” While still keeping the hard-news angle, The Times and the Daily Express were a bit more idiosyncratic in their choice of words.

They said what?

Despite the grave nature of UK PM Theresa May’s allegations against the Kremlin, some papers can always be relied upon to take the mickey. Who cares if the modern world appears to be on the brink of diplomatic disaster when you can turn a James Bond film into a pun?

But what about the World Cup?

The real issue in all of this – at least for Daily Mail readers – is the World Cup. Will England still go? If we don’t, will our allies? Who cares about the health of the UK policeman who was exposed to the same chemical weapon that also left two Russian natives in a critical condition… it’s all about that little leather ball.

Good news for football fans sick and tired of the whole pesky Russian spy thing… the Daily Mirror has ignored the biggest tidbit of international news completely. “Don’t sack Carra,” cries The Mirror.

The paper decided to fob off the Russian-UK spat entirely to share a plea from the spitting victim’s family. They’re apparently begging to save the job of the very TV star who spat at a 14-year-old girl in a shocking road-rage incident.

And yes, you read that correctly. The Mirror does actually think some football broadcaster is more important than peace in Europe.

  • The newly-released tell-all book on the inner-workings of President Donald Trump’s administration hit some store shelves at midnight on Friday.
  • One popular bookstore in Washington DC reportedly sold out in 20 minutes.

The newly-released tell-all book on the inner-workings of President Donald Trump’s administration was released at midnight on Friday — attracting crowds at one book store in Washington DC that had reportedly sold all of its copies in under 20 minutes.

Written by columnist Michael Wolff, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” was released four days ahead of schedule, and one day after Trump’s attorney sent a threatening case-and-desist letter to Henry Holt and Company, the book’s publisher.

“We will be selling it at MIDNIGHT TONIGHT,” Kramerbooks tweeted Thursday night. Pictures on social media showed a sizeable crowd at the store. A Washington-based BuzzFeed reporter cited a store clerk who said the book had sold out in minutes.

“We see ‘Fire and Fury’ as an extraordinary contribution to our national discourse, and are proceeding with the publication of the book,” the publisher said in a statement on Thursday.

The book has received critical attention after a series of excerpts were released this week, which included various disparaging quotes from former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, and other eyebrow-raising details of the Trump administration.

White House officials threw cold water on the book’s claims and attempted to discredit the author.

“Participating in a book that can only be described as trashy tabloid fiction exposes their sad desperate attempts at relevancy,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a press conference Wednesday.

The Midnight Magic of ‘The Room’: Tales From Screenings of the Worst Movie Ever Made https://briefnews.eu/the-midnight-magic-of-the-room-tales-from-screenings-of-the-worst-movie-ever-made/ https://briefnews.eu/the-midnight-magic-of-the-room-tales-from-screenings-of-the-worst-movie-ever-made/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 21:45:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-midnight-magic-of-the-room-tales-from-screenings-of-the-worst-movie-ever-made/ the room 4

The Room is many things. An endless well of internet memes. An absolute trainwreck of a film. But it’s also the most successful midnight movie of the modern era, the heir apparent to Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Since The Room debuted in 2003, it’s developed an intense fan following on the midnight movie circuit. There are dozens of callbacks and hundreds of spoons. Director/writer/star Tommy Wiseau makes frequent appearances at screenings. So does his co-star, Greg Sestero, who co-wrote the behind-the-scenes book, The Disaster Artist, that’s now a movie of its own.

But how exactly did The Room achieve this unique cult status? I spoke to managers and events directors at movie theaters across the country to piece together its rise. They shared stories of elaborate costumes, questionable callbacks, and the work that goes into hosting the most boisterous movie screening in town.

The Beginning

The Room, famously, bombed on its original release on June 27, 2003. Wiseau booked a two-week run at two theaters in Los Angeles that kicked off with a disastrous “world premiere.” But someone managed to wander into an empty showing during those two weeks: Michael Rousselet. The screenwriter has been credited as the “patient zero” of the Room cult thanks to a 2008 Entertainment Weekly article. By his account, he and his friends would bring along 100 people to a single showing. After The Room concluded its initial run, this budding fanbase began calling the theaters where it played, demanding its return. They were persuasive. According to Vulture, it was in the midnight screening rotation at the Laemmle Sunset in Los Angeles by 2004.

It took a few years for the movie to break out of LA, where Wiseau’s face literally loomed over the highway on a billboard he rented. Wiseau released The Room on DVD in 2005. A few national stories on the movie’s cult status followed. But it didn’t seem to escape California until around 2007 or 2008.

“I think The Room first came to Coolidge in, must have been, 2007,” says Mark Anastasio, the program manager at the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, Massachusetts. “We saw some articles. The Los Angeles screenings started to get national attention. I remember our associate director at the time showing the article to myself and our program manager back then and asking us to look into it. We ran it for the staff, to sort of test it out amongst ourselves. The staff screening was a huge hit. We thought it was hysterical and a lot of fun. We booked it for midnight shows and we began to run it monthly. It’s been screening here regularly ever since.”

Tom Beddow, the director of event marketing for Landmark Theatres, tells a similar story. “I actually was working at the E Street Cinema [in Washington, DC] as a manager in 2008 and we had just restarted our midnight program that fall. So our film department was asking us what we wanted to play and I had seen clips of The Room on YouTube and kind of heard that it was becoming a midnight phenomenon. I suggested this movie to our film department and they had never heard of it. But we had actually also gotten some emails from patrons asking, ‘Are you guys ever going to play this movie, The Room?’ The first time it played, it sold out.”

By around 2009, the movie was in midnight rotation at the multiple Landmark Theatres, Coolidge Corner Theatre, the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, and so many other locations across America. As the film gained traction, so did the unique rituals attached to the midnight screenings of The Room.

the room screenings

Callbacks and Costumes

You never hear much movie dialogue at The Room screenings, because the audience is too busy shouting and singing at every opportunity. Although the callback lines can vary depending on the theater, quite a few have entered the national lexicon. Fans chant, “Go! Go! Go!” during any pan of the Golden Gate Bridge, cheering if the pan reaches the end or sighing if it cuts. They also sing the Full House theme song over appropriate shots of San Francisco. They’ll scream, “Focus!” whenever the camera goes out of focus or “Close the damn door!” anytime a character leaves the front door ajar. The characters in The Room also seem to play football a lot (although “play” is a strong word for whatever it is they’re doing) so fans will smuggle in footballs of their own to toss during these scenes. And that’s just scratching the surface. More complete lists of the callbacks can be found here and here.

Audience members also dress up as characters from the movie. Tuxedos, which Wiseau’s character Johnny and his male friends don for one scene, are the most common. Women also frequently show up in red dresses, similar to the one worn by Lisa (Juliette Danielle). But some people get very creative.

“We had a person come dressed as the flower shop lady,” says Bob Roberts, the front of house manager at the Belcourt Theatre. “She even had a stuffed dog that she was carrying around with her. I just thought that was amazing. We have also had people come as the bearded and non-bearded Mark. Just two guys show up as Mark before and after he shaved.”

Elisa Melendez, a longtime Room fan, has also brainstormed some imaginative costume ideas.

“My husband and I have debated a quick change into track pants and tank tops to do a lap around the theater during the jogging scene,” she writes in an email. “But we haven’t implemented it yet.”

While costumes and chanting might be fun, there’s one tradition that eclipses all the rest.

The Room - Morning Watch

A Brief Word on Spoons

The most famous ritual associated with The Room is throwing plastic spoons towards the screen. For whatever reason, Johnny and Lisa’s fictional home is full of framed photos of spoons. So as soon as one is visible onscreen, viewers will scream, “Spoon!” and chuck plastic cutlery towards the front. This happens so frequently that any theater is blanketed with spoons by the time lights come up.

Unsurprisingly, it’s the staff’s least favorite part of these screenings.

“Literally every auditorium we had at the E Street Cinema, if you looked under the screen, there would be spoons,” says Beddow. “They would all hit the screen and fall behind the curtain, so it would just be hundreds of spoons back there. Every couple months, we’d go in and do a spoon clean-up.”

“Any event that has people clear the shelves of the local pharmacy of all their plastic silverware and then leave hundreds of thousands of them just dumped on the floor is going to be a source of agitation for the venue,” says Anastasio. “But I think at the last show, there must have been at least 20 to 30 people, audience members, who stayed to help fill giant Hefty bags full of spoons.”

Beyond the clean-up, the spoons can pose deeper problems. Several theaters warn audiences before each showing that they are not supposed to actually hit the screen. Structural damage is a real fear for multiple managers, who have had to institute a list of rules thanks to a couple bad fans.

Will NBC ever return to Midnight, Texas? Does Fox have one last Dance left in it? Will ABC bang the Gong again?

Those are just some of the questions keeping us awake at night (well, the first two anyway — we’re not losing sleep over The Gong Show.) The fate of nearly a dozen series continue to hang in the balance as the clock ticks closer to 2018, and there are indications that the TV networks may keep fans on pins and needles well into the new year.

While a few of the in-limbo series featured in the attached gallery are as good as dead, many remain firmly entrenched on the proverbial bubble. And in some cases there’s reason to be hopeful.
