Some pilots were sent a mid-flight bulletin announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon.

The note, issued through the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, offered a choice on whether to announce the death of the monarch to crew and passengers on board.

According to an image shared by a British pilot on Twitter, the bulletin read: "ATTN all aircraft. To be read at your discretion it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time. Sent 17592/08."

The pilot, who goes by the username Katie Pilot, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Britain's longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in Balmoral Castle on September 8. The news was first announced by the royal family on Twitter, quickly followed by media outlets. 

The pilot said who shared the image said she received the news while flying "somewhere over France," adding it was a "somewhat surreal and extremely sad moment."

She said in a Twitter comment that she opted not to announce the Queen's death to the rest of the plane as the flight had on-board WiFi and the news was already making its way around the cabin.

A pilot on a British Airways flight traveling from Miami to London chose to utilize the plane's announcement system to relay the news. 

In a video taken by a passenger and reported by E! News, the pilot can be heard telling people mid-flight: "This is an incredibly sad day for all of us on British Airways. Our thoughts are with the entire royal family as we grieve her immeasurable loss." 

He can also be heard inviting passengers to hold a moment of silence for the late Queen.

An Emirates flight attendant couldn’t believe her eyes when something very surprising indeed happened while she was working. All the cabin crew and customers on board joined in to create a very magical moment. The flight attendant, called Vittoria, was treated to a romantic proposal by her boyfriend Stefano. Emirates shared a video of the event on their Instagram account where it has gone rapidly viral.

The enchanting footage shows Vittoria stepping into the cabin to be faced with tens of passengers holding up red balloons, signs and masks of Stefano’s face.

She stops still in her tracks and looks very shocked as one male passenger steps forward with a rose which she hesitantly takes.

As the truth dawns on her she starts to cry with happiness as she walks through the cabin.

Fliers hold up their phones to film the event as she is handed more roses and gifts.

Eventually she turns into the galley where her boyfriend Stefano is standing in a white shirt.

The couple embrace before Stefano gets down on one knee and asks her to marry him.

He takes her hand in his and holds out a ring as she can be seen nodding her assent.

The video ends as Stefano slips the sparkling ring onto Vittoria’s well-manicured finger.

Emirates captioned the video on Instagram: “Love is in the air(plane). Watch our customer Stefano surprise his girlfriend and Emirates’ cabin crew member Vittoria with a romantic in-flight proposal, with some help from our cabin crew and passengers.”

Viewers have been touched by the romantic scene and shared their thoughts online.

“This is beautiful!” one Instagram user wrote. Another posted: “Omg I can’t stop crying.”

“Awesome proposal,” a third viewer commented, while another added: “Why I always love flying Emirates.”

Emirates has recently been revealed as one of the safest airlines in the world for 2019. 

Safety and product rating website airlineratings.com unveiled the top 20. They looked at audits from aviation’s governing and industry bodies; government audits; airline’s crash and serious incident record; profitability, industry-leading safety initiatives, and fleet age.

Qantas was named as the number one safest and British Airways, Lufthansa and American Airlines were also ranked.

According to AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas, these airlines are standouts in the industry and are at the forefront of safety, innovation, and launching of new aircraft.

Flights and how planes really work are a mystery to the majority of aircraft passengers.

One questions many people ask is whether a plane door can be opened during a flight.

A pilot from Australian airline Jetstar has now revealed the answer to this aviation enigma.

Brett Manders explained to Australian network Seven’s Sunrise breakfast programme how plane doors really work.

Some passengers worry that plane doors can be opened mid-flight, whether it’s by accident or on purpose.

However, whether someone wanted to open the door or not – it simply isn’t possible.

The pressure in an aircraft makes it absolutely impossible for a person to open a door mid-flight.

“Imagine a football that’s pumped up really hard and you’re trying to press it in, that’s what you’re trying to do,” Manders said.

“The doors to the front of the aeroplane open ‘in’ initially and then ‘out.’

“The pressurisation in an aeroplane adds hundreds of kilos of pressure each square metre of the door, so humans are not strong enough to open the doors.”

Manders also revealed on the TV show that passengers do not need to worry about turbulence.

He explained turbulence is caused by different masses of air colliding at different speeds – and is not dangerous.

“If you just relate turbulence to bumpy air, all it is is air with different temperatures, moving at different speeds and directions, and it’s mixing,” he explained.

“Pilots don’t like turbulence any more than the passengers do and we would try to avoid it.

“Aeroplanes are just over-engineered to be safe in the environment that they operate in.”

Passengers should also be aware that they really do need to turn their mobile phones to flight mode. 

A mobile phone could serve to interfere with cockpit equipment, even if it’s not actually being used by a passenger.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA): “Modern passenger aircraft are heavily reliant on electronic communication and navigation systems which work on the basis of electromagnetic energy transfer and thus they can be susceptible to electromagnetic interference.”

Mobile phones and many electronic gadgets will transmit electromagnetic signals when not in flight mode as they try to connect with a communications network.

The CAA said: “The cumulative effect of a large number of mobile phones or transmitting electronic devices being used simultaneously when not in Flight Mode, particularly during the critical phases of flight, such as take-off and landing, remains a serious concern.”

If airlines want to permit their passenger to use a phone in flight mode (compared to completely switched-off) they need to seek permission.

Flights aren’t known for being the most hygienic way to spend a few hours – but one plane passenger has been spotted making a trip very repulsive indeed.

A disturbing viral video has filmed a female flier carrying out a grim activity that should only ever be done in private.

Sitting in the window seat of the plane cabin, the woman was captured picking dead skin off the bottom of her feet and dropping the flakes on the floor.

At no point does she stop to consider when the repulsive activity might upset others around her.

The bits of skin she is shedding are being dropped on the floor with little care.

In fact, the woman is scrolling on her phone while she gives herself this gruesome pedicure.

The person next to her is also on their phone and doesn’t appear to be stopping the woman.

No doubt she thought she could get away with the gross activity but the video of the incident has now gone viral.

It was uploaded by Instagram account passengershaming with collects numerous clips of the disturbing things that happen on planes.

Instagram users have been horrified by what the woman is doing on the flight.

Many have commented on the clip to express their disgust at what they’ve seen and to criticise the woman.

“I wouldn’t do this in my living room – this is beyond disgusting!” one person wrote.

“What is it about people messing with their feet while flying? Nasty!” another added.

A third commented on the video: “Some people shouldn’t be allowed to travel.”

However, some Instagram users were of the opinion the person filming should have stopped the woman.

“Say something instead of filming or film and say something,” one person posted.

Another wrote on the social media site: “See something; say something to these idiots!”

Some shared the opinion that airline rules should prevent such disgusting activities from taking place.

“Why can’t airlines make it a condition of flying that you keep your shoes ON and your feet on the floor?” one Instagram user wrote.

However, while this is not an existing regulation, cabin crew have warned against passengers removing their shoes for their own good.

The gross reason behind this is mostly due to the toilet – you never know what you might step in. One flight attendant who claims to have worked on long haul for six years cautions passengers about loo spills.

“Please do not ever walk into a toilet with bare feet,” they posted on a Reddit thread. “I promise you, nine times out of 10, that is not water on the floor.

They added: “The toilets are often absolutely disgusting and get deep cleaned only at the end of a route. For us, this could be from one side of the world to the other… imagine how lovely they are at the end of a 12-hour flight with 200 people using them.”

A passenger was disgusted to find a woman putting her bare feet on a tray table during a flight, and the passenger refused to stop when asked, according to reports.

The video was taken onboard a China Southern Airlines flight which was travelling from Nanning to Harbin.

According to the person filming, the woman in question said it was because she “injured their feet during ballet practice”.

Writing on social media website Weibo, the man explained how many people around them complained.

It was only after two passengers in front of the woman spoke up that the woman then put her feet on the armrest as well.

“They even accused other passengers of lacking empathy and compassion.” he wrote

“The plane is a public place, you can’t do whatever you want and cause suffering to other people.”

Another witness explained how the women were offered other seats by cabin crew but they would not move, saying they could not move due to their injuries.

According to Beijing Youth Daily, the airline is investigating the incident.

Online users were horrified by the woman’s actions onboard the plane.

One wrote: “These two women really don’t feel embarrassed.”

Another felt the cabin crew should have done more: “This kind of behaviour should be managed by the crew, to determine who is right and who is wrong.

“Just warn them that if they don’t put their feet down, they will be contacted and handed over to the ground police for endangering public safety, and will be blacklisted later.”

China is currently working on its own credit system, where bad behaviour could see citizen’s credit score affected.

To be rolled out fully by 2020, the woman in the video could then see herself losing points thanks to the social credit system.

Many passengers have been caught resting their bare feet on someone else’s seat or walking around the cabin half dressed.

One man went one further and decided to use his electric shaver while in his seat.

The video caught him shaving his face mid-flight instead of choosing the more hygienic option of using the bathroom.

Another man was caught filing off the dead skin from his feet while in his seat.

The passenger filming was horrified to see the dead skin falling from the sole of his foot onto the floor.

A shocking video has gone viral after it captured a plane passenger using a foot file to grate her feet in her seat.

The disgusting video – which doesn’t show the woman’s face – shows her carrying out the unpleasant pedicure next to another passenger.

She rests her left foot on the knee as the scrubs the dry skin from her feet.

The woman shows no concern for the flakes of skin which will be falling onto the floor.

Bizarrely, the person sitting next to her – whose face isn’t shown – doesn’t appear bothered by the grim grooming.

The clip was uploaded to Instagram this week by account passengershaming and it has been viewed nearly 140,000 times.

Social media users have been outraged by the passenger’s actions and have shamed the woman online.

One Instagram user commented: “Have a little decency and quit acting like an animal – some things are meant to only happen at home or the salon – didn’t your mama teach you any manners!”

“That’s just nasty!” another said. A third posted: “That’s gross and in extremely poor taste.”

Some people were impressed her neighbour didn’t complain about the woman’s actions.

“How did he not elbow her in the face?” one posted. Another commented: “I would have raised hell if I were sitting next to her.”

The Instagram account previously shocked the internet when it uploaded a picture of a mother letting her child use a potty in the plane aisle. 

In plain sight of everyone on board, the mother of the baby looks to be crouching next to the infant and holding them on the potty.

Passengershaming urged parents to use the lavatory rather than a potty in the post.

“PRO TRAVEL PARENTING TIP: Use the lavatory for your child,” the uploader wrote.

“Parent brings own potty seat on board, sets it in aisle mid-flight to have child use (in front of everyone).

“When discovered by crew was advised she couldn’t do this & would need to utilise the unoccupied lavatory…and her reply…’I don’t give a s***!’(sic)”

The post added: “Obviously not shaming or identifying the child. But this literal s*** is happening out there, folks.”

Many social media users have criticised the mother. “She should be banned from air travel for life that is just disgusting,” one Instagram user posted.”

“Revolting,” another person added while a third wrote: “Can you imagine how terrible this would be if all parents of young children started doing this?”

Flight attendants onboard know all of the tricks of the trade when it coming to the aircraft.

They also know all of the most disgusting secrets, such as how little the water tank is cleaned to people putting toenails in the front seat compartment.

A cabin crew member recently took to popular online forum Reddit to dispel some myths and give some handy advice.

One thing they advised to never do, despite many ignoring it, is to walk about the cabin barefoot.

The flight attendant said: “DO NOT WALK AROUND BAREFOOT. Pee and poop happens, all over.

“I feel like I witness an ‘accident’ regularly; in their seat or in the lav. People get nosebleeds, or their wounds open.”

They warned that even though crew members can clean as well as they can, it is only when they land they can fully aim to fix the problem.

“Obviously when we land, it is thoroughly cleaned. But inflight our resources are limited,” they explained.

Passengers often want to take their shoes off during the flight but this can cause problems for both the plane and the traveller by spreading germs.

The carpets of the cabin are also rarely cleaned as many flights have very little turn-around time.

Cabin crew members simply clean the basics before the plane needs to make its next journey.

Another flight attendant requested passengers keep their socks on at all times.

“We have people take their shoes off and put their feet on the bulkhead, the wall between first class,” flight attendant Anette Long told Business Insider.

“Feet in general just aren’t nice to have for other people’s viewing pleasure.”

One passenger went viral after noticing a follow travellers bare feet poking through the side of the seat.

Jasmine Mays was travelling from Nevada when a brazen passenger put their toes through the side of the armrest by the window.

The video, which had over 18 million views in just a few days, shocked other passengers in regards to the bad flight etiquette.

One remarked: “I think my elbow would “accidentally” smash out on those toes.

“She’d likely remove them quickly…”

An F-35A Lightning II assigned to the test squadron of the US Air Force has suffered an in-flight emergency and was forced to land at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, where its front nose gear collapsed.

The fifth-generation stealth fighter assigned to the 58th Fighter Squadron experienced a technical malfunction over Floridian skies, which forced the F35 to perform an emergency landing at approximately 12:50pm.

“The F-35A experienced an in-flight emergency and returned to base. The aircraft landed safely and parked when the front nose gear collapsed,” 33rd Fighter Wing, a professional graduate flying division for the F-35s, said in a statement.

Fire crews immediately rushed to the scene to pull out the pilot of the jet. No one was injured in the incident, the statement said, failing to mention what caused the initial problem of the F-35 in midflight, and why its front landing gear collapsed. An investigation into the emergency continues. The extent of the damage to the aircraft is unknown.

This is not the first time that the notorious F-35, built by Lockheed Martin, was reported to have suffered problems with its landing gear. A recent Pentagon report noted that some versions of the F35s were experiencing “unanticipated cracks in the main landing gear and structural frame.” Last year the Navy pilots complained that the jet “would bob up and down on its nose gear when being launched from a catapult,” Defense News reported.

It was then revealed that the opening of the luggage compartment hatch was caused by a small dog whose cage wasn’t properly locked. The scared animal apparently got out and went at it tooth and nail trying to escape, ignorant of the kilometers that separated it from the ground.

The persistent pooch “tore the inner lining of the luggage compartment and somehow provoked the opening of its front half-door,” the source told Interfax.

Lucky for the desperate animal, the plane’s electronics wouldn’t let it open the hatch all the way, triggering the alarm and blocking it. “There was a gap of several dozen centimeters, but the dog was unable to get into it and stayed alive,” the source said.
