The singer performed an exceptional rendition of his new song Falling Like the Stars on Britain’s Got Talent tonight.

James appeared in the second instalment of the ITV series tonight – wherein Ant and Dec were set to read out the winner the tonight’s semi-final as well as the final two who were at the mercy of the judges’ panel.

His performance was joined by Freckled Sky – a special effects and lighting company, and it truly bowled over viewers.

Yet some were left wondering if the performer had actually sung live as he asked Ant and Dec if he could borrow their microphone to speak into to the audience when the song was over.

Their argument was simply that if he’d been singing live – wouldn’t he have already had a mini microphone attached to his clothing?

While this could be the case, perhaps his microphone was only hooked up to specific audio for his singing voice, and he thought he would project better with the hand-held device.

Taking to Twitter, fans shared their views.

One person wrote first: “Would’ve been better to actually be able to see @JamesArthur23 rather than all the theatrics, it was so dark I couldn’t see his gorgeous face #BGT #JamesArthur.”

“Why has @JamesArthur23 asked for a microphone to speak into if he was ‘singing live’ #BGTSemiFinal #BGT #BritainsGotTalent,” another wondered.

A third asked: “Why did Ant & Dec need to hand him a mic? Was he not singing live??? #JamesArthur #BGT.”

“Well at least the stage effects looked good… #bgt2019 #BGT #BritainsGotTalent,” a fourth said.

Others shared their praise for the singer, with one person gushing: “Oh @JamesArthur23 your voice is just… Your music never fails #BGT.”

“The lighting effects to that were really quite something. #BGT,” another posted.

A third agreed: “That was insanely good. #BGT.”

While a fourth enthused: “@JamesArthur23 smashed that!! #bgt #FallingLIkeTheStars.”

And a fifth commented: “@JamesArthur23 what a man. That performance was unreal. #BGT #fallinglikethestars.”

“The visual production for James Arthur on #BGT were magnificent. Never seen anything like it,” another fan noted.

While one viewer pointed out: “Fun #BGT fact: Freckled Sky (performing with James Arthur) are a former #AGT Golden Buzzer recipient.”

Google’s Nest smart home brand is in hot water this week after news surfaced (via Daring Fireball) that its home security system, Nest Secure, shipped with an undisclosed microphone. Google activated the microphone earlier this month for Google Assistant functionality, but that meant the device sat in users’ homes for up to a year as an unknown potential listening device.

Nest Secure launched last year as a $ 500 home security system. It’s just a collection of door, window, and motion sensors, along with a small desktop box that acts as a hub for the devices and a security code keypad. It has a speaker for alarms and other sounds, but it isn’t something you would ever expect to have a microphone.

Google gave a statement to Business Insider yesterday, saying, “The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs. That was an error on our part.” According to the company, “the microphone has never been on and is only activated when users specifically enable the option.”

“I’m a bit concerned that the plan is to get this done today, get the prizemoney, and then head to the Golden Slipper,” Dunn said on Saturday.

Adding to Dunn’s concerns is that Godolphin has not nominated Microphone for the Blue Diamond.

“I’ll say to James and the team to leave him in Melbourne as long as you can,” Dunn said.

Microphone had a narrow win, but Dunn suggested that wasn’t a reflection of his ability. “He’s in the top five Godolphin two-year-olds coming through, so it’s good to see him perform.”

Dunn sat comfortably on Microphone, who was down the middle of the track. But he had to shake up the colt when Pretty Brazen, who was on the inside, kicked clear with 100m to go.

Dunn admitted he thought Microphone might have picked up Pretty Brazen more easily than what transpired as he had to push hard to grab her and win by a nose.

Microphone’s stablemate Auxin stalked him down the outside and at one stage looked to be travelling better.

“The other horse had the advantage of being on the rail,” Dunn said. “I sort of held on to him thinking I had a lot more than what I did. His trials round the corner showed he’s got a turn of foot, but you don’t normally show that down the straight.”

Dunn said Microphone had had three trials in the lead-up to his debut, which may have taken the edge off him. “That was a pretty good ­effort down as I was in the middle on my own for most of the race,” he said.

Godolphin’s Melbourne foreman Kate Grimwade said Microphone’s win was “an impressive start to his career”.

“He has to do it on his own,” she said. “Auxin threatened with 200m to go, so it was good that he was able to fight back and ­respond in the manner that he did.

“I also couldn’t have been happier with Auxin’s run, too.”

Luke Currie, who rode runner-up Pretty Brazen, said the Tony McEvoy-trained filly was unlucky not to have won.

“She did a good job. The horses that went down with her weren’t good enough to go with her,” he said. “I could see the Godolphin horse on my outside was close, but if we had been together she would have won.”

Microphone ($ 2.45 fav) ­defeated Pretty Brazen ($ 4.80) by a nose, with Auxin ($ 5.50) three-quarters of a length ­behind.

Shortly after Google released its first branded smartphones in 2016, the Pixel and Pixel XL, some early adopters reported a microphone issues. While they were fixed in phones produced later, the problems disabled all three mics on the devices and often cropped up at odd times, like when holding the devices in different ways or in cold temperatures. Now the search giant faces a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company knew about the issues but sold the phones anyway.

At the time, a Google employee on the Pixel support forums stated that it might be caused by “a hairline crack in the solder connection on the audio codec,” internal damage that might even be caused by simply dropping the phone a short distance. The search giant supposedly prevented in later phones with tweaks in the manufacturing process, but didn’t offer a fix for current phones — just replacement under warranty.

The lawsuit (PDF) claims that even some phones replaced under warranty experienced the microphone issues — and regardless of the fixes in place, continued to knowingly sell Pixel and Pixel XL devices with the defect.

“Despite receiving hundreds of complaints shortly after launch — and admitting the phones have a “faulty microphone” — Google continues to sell the Pixel phones without telling purchasers about the microphone defect. Moreover, instead of fixing the defective Pixel phones, providing refunds, or replacing the devices with non-defective phones, Google has replaced defective phones with other defective phones, resulting in many consumers repeatedly experiencing the microphone defect,” the lawsuit stated.

Razer is known as a gaming laptop, mouse and keyboard maker, but it actually offers a wide variety of products, like Xbox controllers, power banks, and even an upcoming phone. Razer also makes webcams like the Stargazer, which is built for streaming video games. Now Razer is upping its streaming game with two new “streamer certified” peripherals, a webcam with a built-in ring light called Kiyo as well as a USB condenser mic named Seiren X.

The $ 100 Kiyo‘s built-in light has 12 levels of brightness to help light your face for those important picture-in-picture streams on Twitch. It also outputs high-def video at 720p with 60 frames per second (FPS) or 1080p at 30 FPS. The Seiren X also retails at $ 100 and comes with a removable desk stand so you can set it up anywhere you’re streaming from. It connects via USB and has 25mm condenser capsules and a tighter recording angle that’s optimized for streaming, according to the company.

“Streaming has become an integral part of the gaming community,” said Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan in a statement. “We took a hard look at what streamers really needed, and engineered products to support those specific use cases. The result are products that produce professional quality streams while remaining accessible to beginner users.”

Ring lights aren’t anything new, of course. I had one that you could slide onto Apple’s old standalone iSight camera years ago. Still, the Kiyo could be attractive to someone who has a darker room and needs to stream a better image. There are plenty of microphones to choose from, but if you’re using other Razer gear, the affordable Seiren X might entice you, too.

The banner is about three arm’s-lengths wide and spells out its reason for existing loud and clear: “Black Lives Matter” in big white letters. On the border, painted icons represent a wide range of countries and continents. Three high schoolers are methodically but messily working away on it at Trans.lation, an arts and culture center that serves the largely immigrant population in the Vickery Meadow neighborhood of Dallas. Community centers like this one may be feeling a financial squeeze in the coming months: President Trump’s first budget proposal planned to slash funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, a change that could trickle down to the smallest local groups.

Trans.lation started in 2013 without federal funding, and its original intent was to create “socially conscious community projects in Dallas,” project manager Carol Zou says. Now the organization hosts broad programming like tutoring, English-language practice and “know your rights” workshops specially tailored to the needs of this community. The amount of diversity present in Dallas belies its big-oil, big-ranch reputation. Zou says the idea that the state is monolithic is the first misconception that Trans.lation fights to dispel. Half the residents in Texas’ third largest city are nonwhite, according to 2010 census data.

For Zou, naming the best part of her job is easy: the mission. “Community transformation happens when you empower as many people as possible,” she says. “For us, these are public art pieces, but they are public education pieces as well.”
