  • Russia’s defense ministry claims it has new evidence that the missile that downed Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) in 2014 was fired by Ukrainian forces. 
  • The Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur flight was shot down by a Soviet-made missile over the rebel-held eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people on board.
  • In May, international investigators concluded that a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile supplied by Russian separatists in Kursk were responsible for the crash.
  • But Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement, and its defense ministry claimed it had “newly discovered evidence” which it says discredits previous findings and pins the attack on Ukraine.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed on Monday it had new evidence that the missile that downed Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) in 2014 was fired by Ukrainian forces.

Dmitry Polyanskiy, first deputy permanent representative at the Russian mission to the UN, sent an open letter to the Post on Friday, after a July 25 story in the paper quoted him “in a very dubious context.” The story talks about how “truth is winning” in a battle against “Russian disinformation,” pitting Polyanskiy against the plucky social media investigators from Bellingcat – who just so happen to toil on behalf of the NATO-backed Atlantic Council.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014 when it went down over the Donetsk region in Ukraine. All 283 passengers and 15 crew on board perished. Ukrainian air traffic control directed the flight through a combat zone, where government troops were trying to impose control over two rebellious regions by force.

Kiev and its allies in the West immediately accused the rebels or Russia of shooting down the airliner, with Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins claiming a Russian Buk missile battery was present in the area at the time, based on youtube videos and social media postings.

Though it has been excluded from the official investigation, Russia has provided “a lot of information and material to the investigation team, in particular primary radar data,” the diplomat wrote.

Moscow also provided classified information on Buk missiles 9M38 and 9M38M1, Polyanskiy added. The missile manufacturer Almaz-Antey “modeled the incident and widely shared technical data and the conclusions of this simulation.” Eyewitness accounts of local residents were also provided to the Dutch Joint Investigation Team (JIT). By contrast, the US has refused to provide satellite imagery allegedly bolstering the case against Russia, saying it is classified.

Though raw radar data provided by Russia showed no missile heading towards the airliner, the Dutch investigators argued the radars could simply miss such a small object. Not so, the head of Russian air regulator Rosaviatsia said in June 2017.

If the missile was flying the way the Dutch investigators said it was, “the radar would register at least two or three clear ticks – the so-called echo-signals from an object, moving towards the plane,” said Oleg Storchevoy.

“To us the whole idea to use social media accounts as a proof in any investigation is extremely bizarre and doubtful,” Polyanskiy wrote, especially given that the source of funding to these investigators “casts obvious doubt on their impartiality.”

There are a lot of social media investigators on the web who, contra Bellingcat, “clearly indicate that Ukraine is behind the downing of MH17. Why are they ignored while Bellingcat accounts are praised and unquestioned?” the diplomat wondered.

When challenged about their methods, sources and conclusions by other social media users, “all the bellingcats do is attack and bully,” the diplomat wrote, pointing to his own interactions with Higgins and his followers. “They just do not have other arguments besides insults and pathetic lies.”

“What worries me most of all is that after four years of the MH17 tragic accident we are still very far from establishing the truth,” Polyanskiy wrote, describing the JIT efforts to blame Russia based on Bellingcat claims, missing US and Ukrainian evidence, and total disregard for Russian data and documents as “another step in this totally wrong direction.”

Efforts to exploit the feelings of the victims’ relatives and mobilize them in support of these “unsubstantiated claims” are “absolutely immoral,” the Russian diplomat said.

The Russian military expressed concern over “the determination of the Dutch-led investigation to justifying its conclusions by solely using images from social networks that have been expertly altered with computer graphic editing tools.”

The ministry pointed out that the images used in the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) press conference on Thursday were provided by the Ukrainian special services and had been previously displayed by the infamous British online investigative activist group, Bellingcat.

The Dutch-led probe announced that the missile that downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in July 2014 came from a Russian military Buk system that crossed into Ukraine and then returned to its base in western Russia. The JIT essentially repeated the conclusion made by Bellingcat a year ago, which faced serious questioning at that time.

Vladislav Voloshin, the 29-year former pilot, died in his apartment in the city of Nikolayev on Sunday from a gunshot wound. The incident has been described by the Ukrainian police as a suicide. According to the police, his wife heard a shot from another room and the man was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries later.

Law enforcement recovered a PM pistol with filed-off numbers from the scene and sent it to a laboratory for tests. The former pilot has been “depressed” and showed “alarming tendencies,” police said, citing testimonies of his relatives.

While the incident was described as a “suicide,” a criminal investigation has been launched under the “premeditated murder” article of the Ukrainian penal code. The police said the investigation is “required by the procedure in such circumstances.”

Voloshin was thrust into the media spotlight in connection with the 2014 MH17 crash in eastern Ukraine. The aircraft went down on July 17, killing all 298 passengers and crew members on board, including 80 children.

In 2015, a key witness, Evgeny Agapov, an aviation armaments technician with the Ukrainian Air Force, testified that on July 17, 2014, a Ukrainian Sukhoi Su-25 jet aircraft piloted by Voloshin “set out for a military task” and returned without munitions. Agapov has also claimed that the pilot returned from the sortie very agitated and told his colleagues that the plane was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.” The testimony fuelled a narrative that MH17 might have been downed by a Ukranian plane with an air-to-air missile, however, this was not backed by the material evidence available.

Coincidentally, Voloshin received the third class Order For Courage on July 19, 2014, only two days after the MH17 tragedy. Voloshin’s citation quite vaguely reads: “for personal courage and heroism shown while protecting the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

The decorated pilot, however, retired from the military in 2017, issuing an open letter, full of complaints about low pay, bad logistics and equipment, as well as other violations in the Ukrainian Air Force. Shortly after his retirement, Voloshin became a deputy director of the Nikolayev International Airport. Several months ago, he was promoted and became the acting director of the facility.

While Western media pinned the blame for the MH17 tragedy on the eastern Ukraine rebels and ultimately Moscow within hours after the crash, an investigation still did not yield any solid results. The Joint Investigation Team (JIT), consisting of multinational experts, including Dutch and Ukrainian ones, has not yet named any possible perpetrators. The most recent update on the investigation, released earlier this year, did not shed any light on the inquiry itself, only stating it was “extended until January 1, 2019” and would remain “a matter of a long period of time.”

A group of western activists investigating the 2014 tragedy with the Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine say they have found the person believed to be involved in the crash, in the person of a Russian military official. RT spoke to the accused man, Nikolay Tkachyov, who denies any such allegations against him.

“Anyone can claim whatever he or she wants, and no one’s mouth can be shut. These days, everyone writes or says whatever he or she thinks. As for me, I haven’t been anywhere even near Ukraine in 2014. Since 2012, I never traveled outside Yekaterinburg [a city in Russia’s Ural mountains],” the retired lieutenant-general told RT Russian.

The high-ranking military official, who took part in two Chechen wars in the 1990s and 2000s, said he had been in retirement according to his age and Russian laws since January 2014. “I have no idea who has made this [allegation] up and at whose order,” Tkachyov told RT, adding: “Now, anything can be faked and fabricated.”

Last week, a group of journalists that includes the British Bellingcat team, partnered with a US McClatchy DC Bureau and the Insider based in Moscow, published reportsclaiming that they had identified a “Russian Colonel General” as a “key figure” in the MH17 case.

Having used “open source research, investigative journalism, and forensic voice analysis,” they asserted that the Russian military man is the person previously only known as ‘Delfin’ (Dolphin) – a callsign heard in intercepted phone calls allegedly dealing with military action in southeastern Ukraine. In the recordings, “Delfin” is apparently discussing some movements of military forces with another unidentified person, both of them speaking Russian.

“Delfin” is “a key figure sought by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT)” which deals with the crash, Bellingcat’s report claims, adding however that “his exact role and importance for the MH17 case has not been made public so far.” Having concluded that Tkachyov “was by far the most likely candidate to be Delfin,” the journalists deceived the Russian military official to obtain his voice samples. They interviewed Tkachyov “under the cover of writing a story” on his activities at a Yekaterinburg military school. They then gave the samples for forensic voice analysis to two centers, one in the US and another in Lithuania. “A probable match” has been established, the report said.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 with 298 people on board crashed in July 2014 while flying in Ukrainian airspace. Hostilities between Ukrainian troops and anti-government paramilitary forces were ongoing in the area at the time. Almost three and a half years after the tragedy, an international inquiry carried out by the JIT, comprising aviation experts and investigators from the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, Malaysia and Ukraine, is still unable to reach firm conclusions and has failed to name a single suspect.

Vijfhuizen (Netherlands) (AFP) – Three years after Flight MH17 was shot down by a missile over war-torn Ukraine, more than 2,000 relatives gather Monday to unveil a “living memorial” to their loved ones.

A total of 298 trees have been planted in the shape of a green ribbon, one for each of the victims who died on board the Malaysia Airlines flight en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will join government and international officials at a solemn ceremony to dedicate the memorial in the park of Vijfhuizen, close to Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport where the flight took off from on July 17, 2014.

The names of all the 298 passengers and crew killed in the disaster will be read out by their families, and 17 local children will lay flowers.

While most of the victims were Dutch, there were 17 nationalities on board including Australians, Britons, Malaysians and Indonesians.

“A tree symbolises ‘hope’ and ‘future’ in many cultures,” the victims’ families association said in a statement.

“We not only want to honour the MH17 victims, but also want to create a place where everyone can keep their memories of the 298 passengers alive.”

Funded by donations, the project was designed by artist Ronald A. Westerhuis and landscape architect Robbert de Koning after it was chosen out of three proposals by relatives in late 2015.

‘Never Forget’

As the third anniversary of the tragedy dawns, no suspects have been arrested although it was announced this month that any trials will be held in The Netherlands.

About 100 people are wanted in connection with the disaster, after Dutch-led investigators concluded the plane was shot down by a Russian-made BUK missile transported from Russia into areas held by pro-Russian rebels.

in Kiev, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Monday insisted Moscow must be held to account over the tragedy.

“It was a barefaced crime that could have been avoided if not for the Russian aggression, Russian system and Russian missile that came from Russian territory,” Poroshenko wrote on Facebook. 

Russia and the separatist authorities it supports, however, continue to deny any involvement and have sought repeatedly to deflect the blame onto Ukraine. 

The trees in the memorial will be surrounded by sunflowers, which bloom in July, and will “radiate a golden glow” over the trees, the foundation said.

The flowers also represent “the sunflower fields in eastern Ukraine where some parts of the plane wreckage were found.”

Each of the trees bears the name of one of the victims. And at the heart of the forest of 11 different tree varieties is a steel memorial shaped like an eye, turned upwards looking at the skies.

One apple tree has been dedicated to 16-year-old Gary, from Rotterdam, whose body has still not yet been identified.

“It’s nice to think that he has a tree, since we have not received his body. We don’t want Gary to be forgotten. We don’t want any of the 298 victims to be forgotten,” his father Jan Slok, told the daily AD newspaper.

The 16-metre-long steel eyebrow above the eye represents “the burden of the loss,” the Trouw daily said, adding with time it will rust, a symbol of the slow passage of pain. The victims’ names are also engraved in the pupil of the eye.

“If you look inside, you can see both yourself and the name of your loved one,” Westerhuis told Trouw.
