US border agents gas 'rock-throwing' migrants on Mexican border, witnesses allege overreaction https://briefnews.eu/us-border-agents-gas-rock-throwing-migrants-on-mexican-border-witnesses-allege-overreaction/ https://briefnews.eu/us-border-agents-gas-rock-throwing-migrants-on-mexican-border-witnesses-allege-overreaction/#respond Wed, 02 Jan 2019 03:13:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-border-agents-gas-rock-throwing-migrants-on-mexican-border-witnesses-allege-overreaction/

US border patrol have deployed tear gas against migrants in Tijuana, just across San Diego. The authorities argue they repelled an attack by “violent” rock-throwers. Media reports suggest the action was uncalled for, however.

Videos and photos circulated by various media outlets show plumes of yellowish smoke billowing up from the fence separating the US territory from Mexico. In footage provided by Reuters, a man is seen picking up and throwing a tear gas canister back over the barrier while a group of Spanish-speaking migrants cheers and whoops loudly. As the cloud drifts closer to those gathered, migrants can be seen covering their faces and fleeing, with some choking on the fumes.

The incident took place on the New Year’s Eve, with migrants telling Reuters that they expected security to be lax during the first night of 2019 due to celebrations.

However, it turned out not to be the case: as the migrants prepared to climb the fence, US Customs and Border Protection agents retaliated with tear gas and arrested 25 people, including two teenagers.

In its statement following the incident, CBP said that the volleys were not aimed at migrants attempting the crossing, but at rock-throwers who prevented the agents from helping the children being dropped over the border fence.

“Border Patrol agents witnessed members of the group attempt to lift toddler sized children up and over the concertina wire and having difficulty accomplishing the task in a safe manner.”

“Agents were not in a position to safely assist the children due to the large number of rocks being thrown at them.”

The border patrol said they dispersed “smoke, pepper spray and CS gas to a position upwind of the rock throwers.” CBP argued that none of the crossing migrants, including children, suffered from the effects of gas, as the targeted perpetrators stood further away from the fence.

“The deployments were not directed at the migrants attempting entry on the US side or at the fence line,” the agency insisted.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Katie Waldman accused “a violent mob of migrants” of “attacking” the border patrol force with “projectiles,” saying the agents used “the minimum force necessary” to thwart the attack on the border and defend themselves. CBP estimated that about 150 migrants attempted to sneak into the US illegally.

However, several media outlets, including AP and Reuters, contradicted the version of events presented by the US officials.

A witness cited by Reuters, said he did not observe any rocks being hurled at the agents, but saw a migrant being hit by an object looking like a gas canister.

AP, citing its own photographer at the scene, reported that the rocks were launched at the border agents by migrants only after they were pelted with tear gas. AP reported that, contrary to CBP’s report, some of the canisters did hurt the migrants, women and children among them.

Last time the US border patrol resorted to tear gas to fend off an avalanche of migrants trying to break through the fence in November, it sparked a massive backlash after videos and photos of women and children as young as three coughing and fleeing in disarray went viral.

Waldman, however, used the incident on January 1, to prop up US President Donald Trump’s idea of a $ 5bn border fence on the border with Mexico.

“Congress needs to fully fund the border wall, amend the TVPRA, and end the Flores Settlement Agreement that encourages and rewards this type of lawlessness by migrants at the border,” Waldman said.

Trump refused to back down on his border wall project, despite it being the cause a partial government shutdown that has continued into its 11th day. Trump instead accused Democrats of “not caring” about US security and inviting “all the crimes and drugs that Open Borders bring!”

With little time left until Democrats officially take over the House on Thursday, Trump reportedly called for a border security briefing at a White House on Wednesday to discuss the stalemate with leaders of Republicans and Democrats in both congressional chambers.

The active volcano Popocatepetl, located in Central Mexico, has exploded Saturday evening, sending ash two kilometers into the air with the cloud of smoke moving in a northeast direction.

Videos from the eruption show a powerful explosion and traces of magma flowing out of the crater. Possible ash fall is expected in areas surrounding the summit. At the moment the volcanic warning issued by the Federal Civil Protection remains at ‘Phase 2’.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay clear of the region, and those already in the area to take precaution against a potential ash fall. Pyroclastic flows are also possible following the eruption.

Mexican players fight for ball of flames in indigenous game (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/mexican-players-fight-for-ball-of-flames-in-indigenous-game-video/ https://briefnews.eu/mexican-players-fight-for-ball-of-flames-in-indigenous-game-video/#respond Sun, 14 Oct 2018 20:17:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mexican-players-fight-for-ball-of-flames-in-indigenous-game-video/

An old Aztec ball game dating back to 1500 BC really heated up in Mexico city Saturday as teams battled for possession of a flaming ball of fire.

Pelota purepecha is an indigenous ball game during which players use sticks to hit the ball around the pitch in a game that is similar to hockey, minus the flames.

“I kept playing because, apart from the discipline that it instills in you in a sporting sense, it also gives me values that make me redeemable within this current culture, for example: honourability, always striving for your goals,” player Miguel Angel Yachinto Lopez told Ruptly.

Before the game begins, players engage in a ritual to ask the gods to protect them. Pelota purepecha has been credited with stopping people from entering crime and engaging in violence.

“We want to leave certain violent circles. So for many of us, the game has rescued us both athletically and spiritually,”  Lopez said.

Tales of Loss: Six Great Mexican Reads by Women https://briefnews.eu/tales-of-loss-six-great-mexican-reads-by-women/ https://briefnews.eu/tales-of-loss-six-great-mexican-reads-by-women/#respond Sat, 13 Oct 2018 19:53:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tales-of-loss-six-great-mexican-reads-by-women/

Innovation seems impossible when it comes to writing on universal themes like love, family or even loss. And yet, in a world with what translator Sophie Hughes describes as a “stubborn and inexplicable preference for male literary writer superstars,” Mexican women are leaving their own stamps on the literary canon of the latter.

Loss tears through the narrative in some of the below texts, dragging everyone along with it, including (and especially) the reader; in others, it is an uninvited antagonist and a necessary drive. However, in all six of the titles — each one brought masterfully into English with the help of a translator who is taking “nine times out of ten, a pro bono punt on producing a sample to pitch to publishers,” Hughes says — the universal experience of loss and losing becomes a fresh revelation.

Whether they deal with the loss of a homeland, a child or a sense of autonomy, these titles with their nonlinear storytelling, effortlessly incorporated visuals and poetic prose (or even just straight-up poetry) are the new narratives on loss that you need to be reading.

UMAMI BY LAIA JUFRESA

A drawing on the opening pages of the evocatively titled and critically lauded Umami overlays a tongue with a tower block floor plan, adding to the “whimsy” that many have noted the book evokes. In Jufresa’s fiction debut — Hughes considers her a true storyteller — a quiet mystery plays out backward, enveloping just one block of the vast and unruly Mexico City in almost solipsistic grief. A child launches the narrative, while the death of another drives it, at least in part, and although Umami has the potential to be harrowing, it’s instead an understated joy. (Translated by Sophie Hughes)

Dominated by loss, love and exile, this is a novel that can be as frustrating as it is rewarding to unravel, decipher and digest.

ANTÍGONA GONZÁLEZ BY SARA URIBE

Antígona González is political commentary prose about death and a lack of answers that often reads like poetry; it’s a compound text made of translation upon translation, meshed together from seemingly endless sources and voices. That may sound like a recipe for incoherence, and yet the only thing that will leave your head swimming after reading Uribe’s text about disappearances in Mexico — a riff on the classic Sophocles tragedy — is the brutality of loss and tangible pain it communicates. In Tamaulipas, Mexico, everyone is Antígona. (Translated by John Pluecker)

THE GRINGO CHAMPION BY AURA XILONEN

“She’s something else,” Hughes says of Xilonen, who wrote her debut The Gringo Champion (a work that’s ostensibly about a loss of identity and a pervasive feeling of “placelessness”) as a teen. Readers may find themselves at a loss too, because diving into the violent opening pages — which, like the 300 or so that follow, are adeptly and energetically translated — isn’t unlike that first difficult dalliance with the language of A Clockwork Orange. At one point, our protagonist Liborio claims novels are “wormy, airless, disemvoweled” [sic]. Rest assured, The Gringo Champion is the very opposite. (Translated by Andrea Rosenberg)

FOREIGN BODY BY JAZMINA BARRERA VELÁZQUEZ

The quiet, painful and sometimes sudden loss of bodily autonomy seeps through the pages of Barrera’s debut, the award-winning essay collection Foreign Body. A witty, magnificent and almost microscopic look at pain through the lens of her own “foreign body,” Barrera is an essayist who “writes in the vein of Guadalupe Nettel,” according to Hughes. More recently, Barrera’s still-untranslated 2017 essay collection, Cuaderno de Faros — hooked around the real and fictional “lighthouse” — proved she was no one-hit wonder, yet she remains almost criminally overlooked outside her native Mexico. (Translated by Dave Oliphant)

EMPTY SET BY VERÓNICA GERBER BICECCI

An experimental storyteller if ever there was one — her blurb-side bio describes her as “a visual artist who writes” — Bicecci weaves her prose in and around scribbled drawings, mathematical equations and an abundance of Venn diagrams in Empty Set. Dominated by loss, love and exile, this is a novel that can be as frustrating as it is rewarding to unravel, decipher and digest. (Translated by Christina MacSweeney)

HURRICANE SEASON BY FERNANDA MELCHOR

Hurricane Season, like much Latin American literature before it, evokes myth, magic and violence, all set against the vaguely grim backdrop of a small village where redemption seems like a fleeting (im)possibility. Hinging on a crime, the plot traces the suspects as we’re initiated into their lives one chapter at a time. It’s no wonder Hughes recently received a PEN Translation Prize for her work on this story about loss of innocence, life and reason. (Translated by Sophie Hughes; due out in 2019).

Drone with grenades taped to it drops on residence of top Mexican security official (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/drone-with-grenades-taped-to-it-drops-on-residence-of-top-mexican-security-official-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/drone-with-grenades-taped-to-it-drops-on-residence-of-top-mexican-security-official-photos/#respond Thu, 12 Jul 2018 05:31:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/drone-with-grenades-taped-to-it-drops-on-residence-of-top-mexican-security-official-photos/

A grenade-laden, medium-sized drone has targeted the residence of the top security official of Mexico’s Baja California state. Luckily for the residents, the explosives were deactivated and failed to detonate.

State police stationed at Gerardo Sosa Olachea’s house in Tecate, Mexico, spotted two drones circling around the state public security minister’s residence on Tuesday morning. One of the drones then fell on the terrace.

Once the officers rushed to the unmanned aerial vehicle they discovered two grenades duct-taped to it. The drone was also equipped with an audio and video system.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday about the incident, Sosa noted that the explosives had been deactivated, so the stunt was likely made to intimidate him, rather than to kill. He attributed the scare to drug lords because of “the major seizures of drugs and arms and arrests of criminals” overseen by his ministry.

In the meanwhile, the National Defense Secretariat continues with its investigation into the possible origin of the explosives, while police are searching for the owners of the drone.
