GUEST:
Researchers estimate we will speak to chatbots more than we speak to our spouses by 2020. Obviously, companies that implement chatbots are doing something right. However, businesses still have a hard time determining whether or not their bots are up to snuff. While there are plenty of effective chatbots on the market, there are also many that don’t quite meet consumers’ needs. So how do you measure the success of your chatbot?
This is the dilemma facing an increasing number of companies that use chatbots as part of their customer experience. 80 percent of businesses want to implement a chatbot by 2020, but many still face the challenge of gauging the efficacy of the technology.
Google’s Chatbot Analytics platform recently opened up to all, but it is still necessary for businesses to develop and understand their own chatbot success metrics to effectively use the platform.
The process of defining the best KPIs for your company’s bot will depend on your business goals and the functions you want your bot to perform.
Here are seven metrics of success you can use to identify opportunities for improvement in your company’s chatbot.
The first question any prospective investor wants to know about a company is whether or not it makes money. Therefore, the best indicator of a chatbot’s value is its financial benefit.
There are many ways to evaluate a bot’s impact on revenue – the best one for your bot will depend on its purpose. Another interesting wrinkle is that your chatbot can have a knock-on effect on a number of areas.
For example, you can measure a customer service bot’s profitability growth by the amount of money it saves the company compared to maintaining a customer service team 24/7. But you will want to take the bot’s impact on customer service into account. If self-service rates are higher and clients are more satisfied, that will result in repeat customers and higher online sales, thus impacting top-line revenue growth.
Nirvana comes for businesses the moment a user gets exactly what they want from the chatbot without any human input.
If your chatbot’s goal is to change a user’s password, you would measure success by the percentage of user interactions that end with this as a result.
The self-service rate closely correlates the cost savings aspect of revenue growth – in other words, how much money did your chatbot save?
What better way to find out exactly how well your chatbot is doing than to ask the very people who use it?
Your chatbot can help you determine this metric by asking the key question for the Net Promoter Score – “On a scale of 1-10 how likely is it that you would recommend our chatbot to a friend/colleague?” As a lead indicator of growth, the NPS provides a crucial foundation for understanding your chatbot’s customer experience performance.
At this point, it’s worth reflecting on AARRR and its importance in measuring the success of your business.
The activation rate in the context of a chatbot refers to when a user responds to its initial message with a question or an answer which is relevant to your business goals.
For example, a chatbot designed to provide you with weather updates would receive an activation rate when you enter your location – thus allowing the bot to provide you with the information.
How can this KPI help? If for some reason people were not responding when the weather chatbot first reached out to them, the botmaster would be able to tinker with it to enable a more satisfactory outcome.
Unfortunately, even bots with the most robust natural language processing are unable to understand everything a user says.
These errors are a useful indicator for measuring whether or not you need to improve your chatbot’s matching.
Bear in mind there are three different triggers, each of which necessitates its own type of response.
There is first the simple confusion from the bot if it cannot understand a comment. A basic “Sorry, I didn’t understand that. Can you ask again in a different way?” response would suffice.
Second is if the user sends a number of messages which are outside the remit of your chatbot. After a couple of attempts, it would be worth programming your bot to relay a message that reminds the user of its exact purpose.
The final trigger is if the bot forces a user to speak to a customer service agent after the interaction. Each of these will tell you something different about how your chat agent is performing.
Once again referring to AARRR, the retention rate represents the percentage of users who return to the chatbot over a specified period of time.
This timespan would vary between the bots depending on their purposes. For example, a fitness chatbot would require daily interaction and would benefit from analyzing its 1-day retention.
How strong is the AI in your chatbot? You can use the percentage of user questions that are correctly understood to measure this.
Which leads us the million, if not billion dollar question — can my chatbot learn independently?
Chatbots with machine learning can measure progress by comparing the improvement in self-service rate over a period of time without human intervention.
An agent with robust machine learning will be able to continually run its own gap analysis to highlight potential areas of improvement.
The demand for chatbots among Millennials is clear. Consumers are asking for simple and effective customer service, but not every chatbot is capable of delivering on this promise without a few tweaks. In a market that is becoming increasingly crowded, these KPIs can help you keep your chatbot one step ahead of the pack.

If you’re a gaming company seeking an edge over the competition, you’re probably also a big fan of game analytics. At the same time that you are measuring your regular MAUs and DAUs, CPIs and CTRs, you’re also measuring LTV, CAC, and of course ARPU, no matter what platform you’re on.
But rather than knowing that your CTR is low, wouldn’t you like to know why it’s low? And, of course, don’t you also want to be able to identify which players are likely to have the highest LTV? And which campaigns are driving the most revenue to your company?
It shouldn’t be so difficult, if you’re equipped with advanced analytics.
Alongside measuring those top-level metrics, you’d want to add to your dashboard more complex metrics that might involve different data sources, or require tracking user behavior over time, such as LTV per player (and paying player) and average player deposit amount.

You’ll also see important KPIs such as GGR (gross gaming revenues), ARPU, average active days, player turnover, wins, and jackpots. Combining these into one dashboard and integrating data from different sources such as Google Adwords, Facebook campaigns, mobile attribution, or financial systems together with web and mobile user event data give you a performance overview and understanding of your player behavior — as well as revenue aspects such as campaign ROI, mobile attribution, and financial data.
From here you can drill down deeper for a clearer picture on user behavior. Your players’ behavior can’t be treated as a single or multiple actions that happen at one snapshot in time: Digital behavior is more complex than this. It’s a series of user actions over time, and time-series behavioral analytics is required to gain a complete picture of each users’ complete journey.
This is crucial in gaming, since the player journey can start with a campaign click that might continue to a registration followed by a FTD only a while later. With time-series analytics, user identity is maintained through the entire journey, across all touch points and sessions, which is key to understanding behavior built as a series of actions over time.
Experienced gaming analysts know, for instance, that players who complete a number of actions during the same session have a significantly higher likelihood for a FTD as well as a higher retention rate.
In addition, players in the beginning of their user journey may wish to remain anonymous until they finally convert, register, or make a deposit. Time-series behavioral analytics must have the ability to unify multiple user identities in order to understand the complete path of your players’ journey.
Here are a few examples of the types of user behavior analysis your gaming company or platform needs in order to drive fast business growth.
What were the last three steps that led players to perform in-app purchases during the last week?
What is the most followed path that led to a certain deposit sum?
Behavioral path analysis analyzes both the time and steps players took before completing an in-app purchase in order to give you answers to these questions. You then have insights for both when to deliver your players the next-best offer and the optimal time in the game to trigger that offer.
Another tool to analyze player behavior over time and reveal insights into why players make in-app purchases is cohort analysis. For instance, if a gaming company realizes that free users who play throughout the night are making IAPs the next day afterwards, these are the types of behavioral player profiles that can be targeted with a campaign. Once you understand the motivation for player behavior, you can easily optimize for it.
Many gaming companies learn that 80% of their revenue comes from 20% of their players. Focusing on these players and targeting campaigns to them will significantly increase revenue. Reverse cohort analysis can be an extremely effective tool to gather insights of IAPs, starting with an action of the IAPs and going back in time to analyze the events that lead to it. You’ll analyze past player actions such as previous deposits, losses, session duration, levels completed, and types of games played.

For instance, a gaming company might discover through reverse cohort analysis that players who make their first IAP after 10 days of playing on the site have a higher LTV. Such a discovery could lead to focusing on creating a smooth onboarding experience for players in order to shorten this delay period.
I know of a gaming company which used behavioral analytics to discover that players who spent 6-times longer than average during their first visit to the gaming site had a higher probability of making an FTD (first-time deposit).
Another gaming company realized that players who won their first game on the site had a higher likelihood of becoming an first-time depositor. To optimize this player behavior, they added a “test game” before these players made their FTD. In this “test game,” players always won the first round. The uplift was huge!
The sooner you’re able to apply those business insights to your company growth, the greater the impact. That’s why it’s important for your company to implement advanced game analytics as soon as possible in anticipation of that high-phase growth stage, rather than waiting until afterwards.
During this early stage, time and resources are precious. You’ll want to focus as much as possible on developing your product and rely on experts to deliver a full-stack analytics solution rather than building a solution in-house, which can take anywhere from 12-18 months.
By focusing your analytics on the metrics that really matter and incorporating them early into your game, you’ll be miles ahead of the competition – and you’ll reap the rewards.

A former employee who claims Snap Inc. lied to investors ahead of its initial public offering has escalated his lawsuit against the company and is seeking protection under whistleblower laws.
Anthony Pompliano, who served as Snap’s growth lead for three weeks in 2015, is transferring his suit against the company from state to federal court, demanding a trial by jury and seeking damages of at least $ 10 million, according to a complaint seen by Business Insider that will be filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
Pompliano’s lawsuit names Spiegel, Snap Director of Revenue Brian Theisen, and Chief Strategy Officer Imran Khan as defendants.
Additionally, Pompliano is filing for protection under the whistleblower provisions of the Dodd-Frank finance reform law. Those provisions apply to company employees who have come forward with information under the reasonable belief that their company committed fraud against shareholders.
Pompliano first sued the app-maker in January for allegedly “falsely misrepresenting” several key user metrics to outside investors. He also claimed that Snap conducted a “smear campaign to ruin his career” after he was fired.
Many of the details surrounding Pompliano’s tumultuous three-week tenure at Snap were revealed when the company said it had “nothing to hide” and unredacted his original complaint in April. But his new, 45-page complaint includes slides from a presentation he claims to have given Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and other executives about the company’s need to address its conflated app metrics.
Court document
Here are a few of Pompliano’s other key allegations:
Snap has disparaged Pompliano’s allegations in public statements and court filings, calling him a “disgruntled former employee” whose claims are “without merit.” The company faced heated criticism after Pompliano’s complaint revealed that Spiegel had allegedly said Snapchat was “only for rich people” and he didn’t “want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain.” Snap has called the alleged comment “ridiculous.”

It’s not always a simple task to compare the value of electricity generation resources. Coal, natural gas, solar, wind, and so on have different strengths and weaknesses, so when it comes time to build or replace energy capacity, economists look at the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), which divides the total cost of an installation or plant by the kilowatt-hours it produces over its lifetime.
While private financial firms like Lazard calculate their own LCOE figures, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) also puts together an annual report projecting the LCOE for various generation resources. The report, released this month, looks at the cost of generation resources if they were to come online in 2019, 2022, and 2040.
The latest numbers seem to confirm trends that have borne out recently in energy markets—overall, some renewables are getting more attractive, others are struggling, and coal has definitely been unseated as king.
