Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan.

  • Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been married to his wife, Priscilla Chan, since 2012.
  • The couple met during college and have since had two kids together with a third on the way.
  • They've also founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and amassed a real estate empire.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg may not have gotten an undergrad degree out of Harvard, but he has his time at the university to thank for introducing him to his wife, Priscilla Chan.

The couple met in 2003 at a frat party, and tied the knot in 2012, one day after the IPO of what was then called Facebook.

Over the past two decades, as Zuckerberg has continued to run Meta, the couple founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, pledged millions to philanthropy efforts, started a family, and traveled on vacations abroad, all while buying up big properties in California, Lake Tahoe, and Hawaii.

Here's everything you need to know about the couple, who have been together for nearly 20 years and have two children together — with one more on the way.

Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg met in line for the bathroom at a Harvard University party in 2003. Zuckerberg's fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, was hosting a party and Chan, a sophomore student from the Boston area, was there.

"He was this nerdy guy who was just a little bit out there," Chan told The New Yorker. "I remember he had these beer glasses that said 'pound include beer dot H.' It’s a tag for C++. It’s like college humor but with a nerdy, computer-science appeal."

Chan said that when she first met Zuckerberg, she thought he might get kicked out of school for a prank he pulled: the hot-or-not website ranking the attractiveness of students on campus, called "Facemash," that Zuckerberg notoriously created in his sophomore year at Harvard.

Zuckerberg was also expecting to get kicked out of Harvard when he met Chan. The party was a farewell bash. In his 2017 commencement address at Harvard, Zuckerberg said his opening line to Chan was: "I'm going to get kicked out in three days, so we need to go on a date quickly."

"Without Facemash, I wouldn't have met Priscilla," Zuckerberg said in his Harvard commencement address in 2017. "She's the most important person in my life, so you could say it was the most important thing I built in my time here."

When Zuckerberg took Chan out for the first time, he told her he'd "rather go on a date with [her] than finish his take-home midterm," Chan said in an interview with the "Today Show" in 2014. "The type-A first child in me was appalled."

Zuckerberg officially dropped out of Harvard in the fall of 2005, after his sophomore year, to focus on building Facebook. He moved out to Palo Alto, California, where Facebook opened its first office.

In 2007, Chan graduated from Harvard, and Zuckerberg was there to celebrate. Chan then followed him to California, and entered medical school at the University of California, San Francisco in 2008. She rented an apartment near Golden Gate Park, where Zuckerberg would visit her most weekends.

Early on in their relationship, Chan set some strict ground rules because Zuckerberg was so busy with Facebook. Chan required one date per week, and a minimum of 100 minutes of alone time per week not at Facebook.

"They walk in the park, go rowing (he insists that they go in separate boats and race), play bocce or the board game the Settlers of Catan. Sundays are reserved for Asian cuisine," the New Yorker wrote about the couple in 2010.

Chan was there when Zuckerberg turned down multiple buyout offers, including a $ 1 billion offer from Yahoo in 2006. She told the New Yorker in 2010 that during that time period, Zuckerberg was the most stressed-out that she'd ever seen him.

While still a med student at UCSF, Chan moved in September 2010 to Zuckerberg's rented house in the College Terrace neighborhood of Palo Alto. He announced the news on — where else — Facebook. "Now we have 2x everything, so if you need any household appliances, dishes, glasses, etc please come by and take them before we give them away," he wrote.

In May 2011, Zuckerberg and Chan bought a five-bedroom home for $ 7 million in Palo Alto and tricked it out with a "custom-made artificially intelligent assistant." The following year, Zuckerberg bought the four homes surrounding the residence for $ 43 million to allow him to expand his property.

In May 2012, Zuckerberg and Chan tied the knot in a surprise wedding ceremony just days after Chan graduated from med school and Zuckerberg took his company public. The couple told guests that the event was a surprise graduation party for Chan, then treated their guests to a wedding ceremony in the backyard of the couple's Palo Alto house.

In July of that year, Zuckerberg announced on Facebook that Chan was pregnant. The couple had been trying for years, but Chan suffered three miscarriages along the way. "It's a lonely experience," Zuckerberg wrote. Chan gave birth to a baby girl that December and the couple named her Max — short for Maxima.

To celebrate the birth of their daughter, the couple also announced the launch of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The couple pledged to donate 99% of their Facebook shares through the organization. Chan left her role as a pediatrician to run the organization full-time.

Chan and Zuckerberg have also made efforts to support education on both coasts. The Meta CEO made a $ 100 million investment back in 2010 into the struggling school system in Newark, New Jersey, but the effort ultimately failed. In 2015, Chan and Zuckerberg launched their own school, called The Primary School, for students in low-income areas.

The couple also donated $ 75 million in 2015 to a San Francisco public hospital, which was then renamed after Zuckerberg. In 2020, the hospital's name was formally condemned by city officials, who accused the couple of tax evasion and Facebook of "endangering public health" by allowing misinformation to spread on its platform.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg and Chan welcomed the birth of their second daughter in August 2017, whom they named — appropriately — August. Zuckerberg took two months off work for paternity leave after August's birth.

Zuckerberg and Chan have also traveled the world together. Early on in their relationship, they agreed to vacation for two weeks every year overseas. They've taken trips to Dubai, Mumbai, and China, where they visit Chan's family. Zuckerberg spent years learning Mandarin from Chan.

Meta is shutting down the standalone Facebook Gaming app https://briefnews.eu/meta-is-shutting-down-the-standalone-facebook-gaming-app/ https://briefnews.eu/meta-is-shutting-down-the-standalone-facebook-gaming-app/#respond Wed, 31 Aug 2022 06:08:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/meta-is-shutting-down-the-standalone-facebook-gaming-app/ Meta has started notifying users of its standalone Facebook Gaming app that it will soon no longer be available. In an in-app notification (as shared by social media consultant Matt Navarra and other publications), the company has announced that both iOS and Android versions of the application will stop working on October 28th. Meta is also giving users the chance to download their search data and reminding them that Facebook Gaming isn't going away entirely. Users will merely have to go to the Gaming tab in the main Facebook app to watch their favorite creators' livestreams.

The company released the dedicated Gaming app in 2020 to better compete with Twitch and YouTube. Meta (still known as Facebook back then) designed the app to highlight content from streamers and to provide users with a group chat and other community features. It didn't say why it decided to shut down the standalone app, but it could be part of its cost-cutting efforts meant to help it weather what Mark Zuckerberg calls "one of the worst downturns [the company has seen] in recent history."

Over the past year, streaming tool providers such as StreamElements reported that Facebook Gaming comes only second to Twitch when it comes to hours watched on a game streaming platform. However, we examined data from CrowdTangle, Meta's analytics service, and found that the platform is flooded with spam and pirated content masquerading as gaming livestreams. Back then, a spokesperson told Engadget that Meta was "working to improve [its] tools to identify violating content" so that users can have "the best experience."

‘You Might Be the Killer’ Review: The Meta Slasher is Splattery and Wildly Witty [Fantastic Fest] https://briefnews.eu/you-might-be-the-killer-review-the-meta-slasher-is-splattery-and-wildly-witty-fantastic-fest/ https://briefnews.eu/you-might-be-the-killer-review-the-meta-slasher-is-splattery-and-wildly-witty-fantastic-fest/#respond Sat, 22 Sep 2018 22:34:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-might-be-the-killer-review-the-meta-slasher-is-splattery-and-wildly-witty-fantastic-fest/ You Might Be the Killer Review

Brett Simmons’ You Might Be The Killer is not Cabin In The Woods 2.0, but that doesn’t stop stay-up-late genre manipulation from scoring uptempo playground thrills. Remember Fran Kranz? Drew Goddard’s lovable cabin stoner with an extendable, collapsing bong? Travel seven years into our future (from the 2011 release), and he’s lambasting horror norms once again thanks to a massively viral Twitter thread turned feature. Dead serious.

You Might Be The Killer lifts from a satirical tweet exchange between online personalities/authors Sam Sykes and Chuck Wendig. That sounds like the makings of a cinematic disaster, but fret not. Simmons controls a splattery, wildly witty, elbow-your-horror-buddy-because-this-’ish-hilarious meta flick focused on sleepaway excitement. Friday The 13th from *maybe* the killer’s view? Inside man, style?

Find out more in our You Might Be the Killer review.

Kranz stars as Sam, a generic summer camp’s managerial head counselor. Opening night, before children run amok, Sam tells a haunting story of French Cajun settlers, creeping death, and a demonic woodmaker’s mask buried somewhere on “these very grounds.” Another counselor – Sam’s still-not-over-her ex – decides everyone should split off and “treasure hunt” for the possessed relic. Cue Sam running through the woods, covered in blood, disoriented because almost every single one of his counselors have been “slasherized.” That’s when he phones best friend and horror aficionado Chuck (Alyson Hannigan), who walks him through the dos and don’ts of surviving any slasher flick. But the question remains – is Sam the killer?

By virtue of “gimmick” filmmaking – You Might Be The Killer hinges on Chuck’s line of increasingly worrisome questioning and references to classic horror titles – Simmons sustains even after “reveals” demystify. Sam plays dumb, out of his league, while Chuck lays down every novelty nostalgia “rule” in the book. Background store posters deep-dive crazy hard into cinema, which gave me a chuckle when The Mask Maker popped up – a new-age killer icon none of you know about for predictable reasons. It sounds…exhausting? Although, in practice, Kranz and Hannigan’s chemistry – via phone, no less – subverts the horror rookie/slasher savant relationship with energy, proper contemplation, and Sam’s dazed ten-leagues-over-his-head charm.

XX

Graciously, You Might Be The Killer hangs up cellular devices for stints of defensive evasion or flashback recollections doused in liquids-and-dummies gore. Some deaths are even unexpected. Banter lulls into a hypnotizing sense of schtick so efforlessly that we forget body counts bypass numbers to the point where the words “A LOT” flash on-screen until a masked madman splits some dudebro’s head clean in half. Blood spills like rivers from sliced necks and you might even earn a decapitation or two. But most important is Simmons’ devotion to practical slaughterhouse fun in a movie about the very core of slasher studios satire. When hunts are afoot, comedy smash cuts to limb-ripping grindhouse gore.

As legends unfold, realities take shape, Kranz’s performance attempts to rationalize and sympathize with everything from Sleepaway Camp to Maniac Cop. Hannigan undusts tomes scribbled with encyclopedic slasher information as she tries to solve her friend’s dilemma while Rings Of Saturn comic book patrons eavesdrop. Kranz, laying on the floor with his feet dangling in the air like a high school girl talking to her crush, recalls how Steve “The Kayak King’s” guts were spilled all over woodland brush. Hannigan’s darting eyes and cringy honesty, Kranz’s “wait, am I the killer?!” skittishness like they’re in a different movie than the random hardbody counselors who fulfill every major trope outlined in Horror 101.

Sidebar – the whole “Kayak King” recurring gag shouldn’t work anywhere nearly as hilariously as it does. One of the little magic ingredients that keep this indie horror laugher tonally aligned.

That’s everything necessary one should know about You Might Be The Killer before watching. It doesn’t rewrite horror history as Scream did, nor retread The Final Girls with equal energy, but there’s still an enjoyable dive into slasher normality worth any genre fan’s midnight scream. Maybe order a beer or two for this one? Crowd-pleasing horror with a roaring campfire aroma flipped upside down and hilariously mindfucked with just enough subjective damnation. RIP “Kayak King,” you were too pure for this unforgiving slash-or-be-slashered world.

‘DERE EVIL .EXE’ Is A Punishing Platformer Of Meta Horror https://briefnews.eu/dere-evil-exe-is-a-punishing-platformer-of-meta-horror/ https://briefnews.eu/dere-evil-exe-is-a-punishing-platformer-of-meta-horror/#respond Sat, 07 Jul 2018 06:45:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dere-evil-exe-is-a-punishing-platformer-of-meta-horror/ dereevilexe_header.jpg

As if rapid, countless platforming deaths weren’t enough, DERE EVIL.EXE, sequel to the award-winning horror DERE.EXE, places you in the midst of an eerie story, one that seems intent on breaking out of the game’s world.

Knightly, your protagonist, will need your guidance through this world full of daunting platforming puzzles. Will you be able to escape the clutches of the creator, or will you fall into a trap? It seems like a straightforward task, but something is very off with the world, placing reality on shaky ground with unsettling things creeping around beneath it.

For fans of horror that’s not quite content to inhabit the fictional game reality it’s supposed to be contained within, DERE EVIL .EXE is not one to miss out on, with the game constantly breaking its own rules and existence to create a fear that crawls outside the game’s world. Using both visual and audio presentation by switching from chirpy, happy chiptunes to crackling, chilling PSX style music as well as upsetting the world with distortions, you’ll be sure to feel a presence watching your every move. You’ll have to focus to survive the game’s difficulty platforming, but expect a few unsettling surprises while you’re watching your jumps.

DERE EVIL .EXE is available on Steam, Itch.io, and The App Store. You can also check out the developer’s official website and Twitter!

“Remember when we thought we were done with all of this,” Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) laments to Lucy (Abigail Spencer) in the above trailer for Timeless Season 2 (premiering Sunday, March 11 at 10/9c). The cheekily meta crack serves as a sly nod to the NBC drama’s temporary cancellation last spring, while also underscoring the intense mission(s) ahead.

The action-packed 30-second promo features footage from the WWI-set opener, as well as the gang’s run-in with the Salem Witch Trials. It also teases — via Matt Lanter’s Wyatt — a major sleeper-agent twist, before concluding with a spoiler to end all spoilers: a Lucy-Wyatt kiss.

Suffice it to say, there’s quite a bit to unpack here.

Meta partners with Ultrahaptics and ZeroLight for touch in AR https://briefnews.eu/meta-partners-with-ultrahaptics-and-zerolight-for-touch-in-ar/ https://briefnews.eu/meta-partners-with-ultrahaptics-and-zerolight-for-touch-in-ar/#respond Wed, 03 Jan 2018 09:58:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meta-partners-with-ultrahaptics-and-zerolight-for-touch-in-ar/

Meta is adding another dimension to its augmented reality experiences by incorporating haptic feedback. To that end, it has partnered with Ultrahaptics and ZeroLight, and it will be showing off a demo of the new technology at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show industry event next week.

“The vision behind Meta is to deliver a machine that acts as an extension of the body, allowing us to intuitively create, communicate and collaborate in a natural way,” said Meta’s head of developer relations David Oh in a press release. “We are working closely with our partners using the Meta 2 Development Kit to deliver such experiences through augmented reality today, while defining what the future of computing will look like in the years to come.”

The CES demo will feature an AR Pagani Huayra Roadster, a sleek luxury automobile that costs $ 2.4 million. Unless you own one of the 100 vehicles ever made, it’s unlikely you’ve had a chance to touch it, much less take it for a spin. Meta’s AR version of the hypercar recreates the vibrations of the engine, and event-goers will be able to break it down to examine separate parts. It draws on ZeroLight’s expertise for configuring 3D cars and uses Ultrahaptics’s ultrasound technology, which is focused on making AR and VR experiences more immersive.

Market analyst Digi-Capital estimates that the AR market will reach $ 120 billion by 2020. Right now, mobile AR has a lead with Apple’s ARKit jostling with Google’s ARCore to be the “largest AR platform in the world.” But that doesn’t mean AR headsets are necessarily being left in the dust.

In 2016, Meta raised $ 50 million in a second round of funding and unveiled its Meta 2 AR headset. And competitor Magic Leap revealed its new AR goggles last month and has so far raised $ 1.9 billion in funding. The Magic Leap One is a “creator edition” of the headset that’s slated to roll out in early 2018 to developers along with software development kits.

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

How to Get Away With Murder alum Kendrick Sampson has been cast in the recurring Season 4 role of Dominic Lanse, a TSA agent who apparently was among the dozen bus passengers doused with dark matter and now possesses the ability to read other people’s thoughts — thus earning him the sobriquet of Brainstorm, our sister site Deadline reports.

Sampson will make his debut in the superhero series’ fall finale, airing Tuesday, Dec. 5; see photo at right.

In addition to his run as HTGAWM‘s Caleb, Sampson’s TV credits include The Vampire Diaries, Fox’s Gracepoint and, most recently, Showtime’s White Famous.

‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ TV Movie Is Coming to Nickelodeon in 2018, and It’s Very Meta https://briefnews.eu/rockos-modern-life-tv-movie-is-coming-to-nickelodeon-in-2018-and-its-very-meta/ https://briefnews.eu/rockos-modern-life-tv-movie-is-coming-to-nickelodeon-in-2018-and-its-very-meta/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 11:12:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rockos-modern-life-tv-movie-is-coming-to-nickelodeon-in-2018-and-its-very-meta/ Rocko's Modern Life Movie

After ending its three-year run over 20 years ago, Nickelodeon is bringing back Rocko’s Modern Life.

The kids network has announced a continuance of their stroll down Nostalgia Lane as the titular Australian wallaby, his dog Spunky, steer best friend Heffer, neurotic turtle buddy Filburt, and his neighbors the Bigheads are all coming back for a TV movie on Nickelodeon in 2018.

Find out more about the Rocko’s Modern Life movie after the jump.

TV Line has news of the one-hour TV movie, titled Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, which will bring back all the original voice cast members.

For those who don’t remember, the voice cast features Carlos Alazraqui (The Fairly OddParents) as Rocko, Spunky, and Leon; Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Heffer Wolfe, Chuck, and the superhero Really Really Big Man; Mr. Lawrence (yes, that’s his full name) as Filburt Turtle and Maitre D’; Charlie Adler (Blaze and the Monster Machines) as Ed Bighead, Bev Bighead, Mr. Dupette, Grandpa Wolfe, and Mrs. Fathead; Linda Wallem (Nurse Jackie) as Aunt Gretchen and Dr. Hutchinson; Jill Talley (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Nosey; and creator Joe Murray as Ralph Bighead, a character who became a cartoonist in the original series, seemingly somewhat based on Murray himself.

As for where we find these wacky characters this time, Nickelodeon revealed that the movie sees all of our characters returning to Earth after somehow being lost in space since 1996, which is when the original series ended. Upon their return, Rocko is having a hard time dealing with modern life in the 21st century while his friends Heffer and Filburt have no problem fitting in, embracing every aspect of technology, social media, food trucks, and more.

In a very meta and somewhat dark twist, Rocko begins to think that his nostalgia for the past can save him from the tortures of the modern world. So we’re getting a nostalgic animated TV series revival where the lead character gets nostalgic for the time that the TV show took place. This sounds like it’s actually going to be awesome.

Even though there will be plenty of nostalgia with all of the original voices coming back, there are also a couple of new voices being brought on board. Steve Little of Adventure Time is playing Cowboy and Cosmo Segurson is playing a Pillow Salesman.

Rocko’s Modern Life is Nickelodeon’s latest attempt to capture the love that adults have for the 1990s. There was a Legends of the Hidden Temple movie last year, and a Hey Arnold! TV movie revival is coming this fall, as well as the return of Invader Zim at some point, too.

Check Out Nathan Fillion's Meta Tony Stark Cameo That Was Cut From Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 https://briefnews.eu/check-out-nathan-fillions-meta-tony-stark-cameo-that-was-cut-from-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-2/ https://briefnews.eu/check-out-nathan-fillions-meta-tony-stark-cameo-that-was-cut-from-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-2/#respond Thu, 18 May 2017 02:04:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/check-out-nathan-fillions-meta-tony-stark-cameo-that-was-cut-from-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-2/
Nathan Fillion, seen here in Firefly, had a meta cameo cut from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Image: Fox

The Internet’s favorite fan casting choice, Nathan Fillion, is not in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But that wasn’t always the case. Last year, fans caught a glimpse of some very interesting posters of Fillion on the set of the sequel and now writer-director James Gunn has explained what happened.

We first reported on the posters in April of last year. That’s when it was revealed Fillion was somehow playing Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man. And in this world, Williams starred in a biopic of Iron Man himself, Tony Stark, titled Tony Stark. So Fillion played Williams, who was playing Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. Got it?

Here’s a high-res version of the poster Gunn posted on his Facebook.

In the description of the poster, Gunn gets into a bit more detail about how this all came about. Here’s a snippet:

In a small flash to earth I decided to put a theater playing a “Simon Williams Film Festival,” with six Simon Williams movie posters outside. Obviously, from the posters, he’s had a run of B movies. Most of them in themselves are Easter eggs of some sort or another. Unfortunately, the small section of the scene where they appeared slowed down the movie and I had to cut the Easter eggs from the film (along with storefronts named after comic book luminaries Starlin, Mantlos, Annett and others). Equally a bummer was that a lot of people took photos of these posters on the day so suddenly every fan site was reporting that Nathan was playing Wonder Man in he movie. He was even the third-billed actor on IMDB.

So that’s the full story. Nathan’s only cameo in the movie ever were these posters. I’ll post them all over the next few days.

And, yes, I think we can consider them canon for the MCU, and I hold onto hope that Simon Williams will rise again!!

Hopefully not only will that scene be on the DVD (I assume Ego took Meredith to the movies or something), but Wonder Man, played by Nathan Fillion, will make an official MCU appearance sometime soon.

An animated film about a physically imposing character who’s more than a muscle-bound idiot, with a message about not judging others based solely on their looks? That’s about as subtle as a bull in a chi…well, you know the rest. But animated movies provide teachable moments for young audiences, and even though we’re all familiar with these tropes, there’s always a new generation who’ll be learning them for the first time.

Enter Ferdinand, the latest animated effort from Blue Sky Studios. 20th Century Fox has released the first trailer, and if nothing else, it features an impressive voice cast. Watch the full Ferdinand trailer below. Here’s the trailer, which actually includes a “bull in a china shop” scene because of course it does:

That’s wrestler/actor John Cena as the title character, and that piece of meta casting may be the most intelligent thing this movie has going for it. Cena is an imposing physical presence in real life, and it makes sense that he’d be the star of a brainless action movie like 12 Rounds. But as we’ve recently seen in comedies like Trainwreck and Sisters, there’s more to him than meets the eye. Hollywood seems to be slowly accepting him as a comedic supporting player, revealing a side to the actor that stands in opposition to audiences’ first impressions of him.

The film is based on a beloved children’s book by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson that was first published back in 1936. An interesting historic note: Adolf Hitler ordered copies of the book to be burned in Nazi Germany, but a reported 30,000 copies were handed out to the nation’s children following the end of World War II.

Walt Disney adapted the story of Ferdinand into an Oscar-winning animated short in 1938. Check that out below.

This new movie adaptation expands the story considerably, and features a supporting cast that includes SNL star Kate McKinnon, Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez, Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs, Gabriel Iglesias, Bobby Cannavale, former Doctor Who David Tennant, Anthony Anderson, Jerrod Carmichael, and more.

Ferdinand hits theaters on December 15, 2017, which means 20th Century Fox is looking to use it as counter-programming against Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Yeah…good luck with that.

FERDINAND tells the story of a giant bull with a big heart. After being mistaken for a dangerous beast, he is captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team on the ultimate adventure. Set in Spain, Ferdinand proves you can’t judge a bull by its cover.
