Annapurna Mellor

Annapurna Mellor

October 24, 2018

Every year, some 30,000 camels descend on Pushkar, a small town in the state of Rajasthan, in what’s been billed as India’s “greatest tribal gathering”. Photographer Annapurna Mellor captures the madness.

Gazing through his long, sandy eyelashes, the beast stares curiously into my lens. I’ve photographed camels before—on the dunes of the Gobi, the Sahara, and Egypt’s Western Desert—and each time, they strike me as grand, proud, tranquil beings.

Despite their grace, it’s my own kind, the herders who live among these creatures, who I’m here to learn more about.

Unlike most towns in India, Pushkar doesn’t have a railway station. To reach it, you have to take a jam-packed bus from the nearby city of Ajmer. For an hour, the bus rocks and rumbles down the dusty road before skidding to a halt at the edge of the town.

Compared to other Rajasthani towns I’ve visited, Pushkar is quiet. I arrived a few days ago, on one of the last days of Diwali and a week before the official start of the famous Pushkar Camel Fair. As I walk around town on my first night, locals light candles along the edges of Pushkar Lake and the sky glows a deep pink. This sleepy town has already grabbed me by the eyeballs—and I haven’t even spied a camel yet.

Pushkar lies in the west of India, between the sandy blankets of the Thar Desert and the technicolor cities of Rajasthan. It’s a small town, shrouded by spirituality—the lake in the center of town is said to have been formed by the tears of the Hindu God, Shiva. As such, it attracts pilgrims from all over India.

I meet Ram in a local chai (tea) shop in the early days of the fair. He’s a local musician, and the same age as me. I’m carrying a heavy, overpriced camera, but his instrument of choice is a piece of wood he’s carved into an ektaara—an Indian guitar.

Between sips of chai, he plucks it melodically, singing local folk songs about the harshness of the desert and family life. We become friends, and he introduces me to many of the herders and helps me gain their trust—enough for them to let me photograph their families (and their camels).

On our first morning together out on the dunes, a family of nomads invite us into their circle; the mother, who has a delicate face and bright green eyes, begins brewing chai masala spices with a bag of sweet milk.

The fair originally began as a way to attract camel and cattle traders to do business during the holy Kartik Purnima festival, traditionally held here on the full moon in the Hindu lunar month of Kartika (November-December). But inevitably, it’s now become a major drawcard for tourists, and the traditional camel trading has now given way to a program of activities—including camel beauty contests, camel racing and camel dancing competitions.

The population of Pushkar, usually home to some 21,000 locals, booms to 400,000 during the festival. As the town fills with tourists and pilgrims, the official fair begins and a cultural program takes place alongside the camel market. There’s no shortage of activities and performances to behold—from temple dancing, folk music concerts, spiritual and heritage walks, and even a moustache competition.

While the weeks before the fair had been a serene affair, chaos sets in as soon as the official fair kicks off. Ram hates this part, and it doesn’t take me long to see why.

Tour groups arrive en masse, armed with zoom lenses, capturing the faces of the herders and their families without permission. I notice that many of the families I had spent time had left before the fair began, or were beginning to pack up early, fleeing the zoo-like pandemonium.

Away from the camel herding grounds, the cultural performances provide some alternative entertainment, and the women in their best clothes—bright colors, sequins, lavish fabrics—is a wonderful sight to capture.

The streets of this once-sleepy town are constantly congested and street performers from neighboring villages mark off street corners to charm snakes, play local music or perform circus tricks.

The calm of Pushkar is no longer, but I still find places of refuge—up Snake Mountain, which looms over the city, or out in Ram’s home village. Down at the lake, pilgrims are now visiting in their thousands, dipping into the holy waters.

As the fair eventually winds down, the remaining herders round up their camels and begin to march them over the desert back to their villages in the Western Thar Desert—and Pushkar returns to its usual sleepiness. With the madness over, Ram breathes a sigh of relief. Until next year, that is, when the surreal Pushkar Camel Fair will inevitably descend on the town again.

Watch a mesmerizing New York flyover shot with a 12K camera https://briefnews.eu/watch-a-mesmerizing-new-york-flyover-shot-with-a-12k-camera/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-a-mesmerizing-new-york-flyover-shot-with-a-12k-camera/#respond Fri, 18 May 2018 11:49:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-a-mesmerizing-new-york-flyover-shot-with-a-12k-camera/

Some folks believe that 8K TV is overkill, but cinematographer Phil Holland just flaunted video of New York City captured in sweeping 12K. He used three RED Monstro 8K VistaVision cameras (turned sideways) mounted on a special rig called the Shotover K1 Hammerhead. The videos were then stitched together to create a 12K, 48fps film with each frame equivalent to 100 megapixels, using a sensor area roughly equivalent to 645 medium format film.

Holland works with RED and was one of the first to get his hands on the new Monstro 8K VistaVision large-sensor camera. “On a creative level I knew this was going to be good; Monstro’s strengths come in the form of great color, dynamic range, and very clean shadows. Which would work great for low light and night,” Holland wrote on a blog about the project. He chose Tokina’s 35mm T1.5 lenses for their good low-light performance and a large image circle.

Shooting with three very high resolution cameras from a helicopter presents some technical challenges, obviously. The K1 Hammerhead has a six-axis gyro to stabilize the camera array and keep the shots steady. For the stitching to work properly, they had to figure out the correct amount of overlap, and the cameras had to be synced using RED’s Jetpack SDI module. “This is actually one of the first times I’ve ever seen this bad boy used to maximum intent,” he said.

Putting the video together in post was equally tricky, as everything needed to be aligned, warped, stitched and blended. Because all three cameras were pointed in different directions, shots needed a perspective adjustment to create a perfect rectilinear projection.

The final image was 12K at a standard DCI 1.9:1 aspect ratio. “Interestingly you can extract a very IMAX friendly image from this setup as well with an appealing FOV and resolution for proper IMAX screens,” Holland notes. Since there is no way to display a 12K image, Holland reduced the final image to 8K.

You probably won’t be able to view the 8K video on YouTube in its full glory, but if you have a powerful computer and 4K or 5K screen, you’ll still be able to appreciate it. “The resulting very large format provides a level of depth that’s rather mesmerizing, especially in motion,” said Holland.

Telescopes dot the cloudless top of the dry volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii, Earth’s tallest mountain from its underwater base to its peak. Its night skies, free of artificial light, are a resource disappearing across the planet in the face of light pollution.

This new video comes as part of the SKYGLOW project, which seeks to capture footage of some of North America’s remaining dark sky locations. These are places whose skies haven’t been washed out by light from human activity, where you still see the stars or the glow of the Milky Way galaxy.

Around 80 percent of the world lives in a place with some sort of sky glow, according to the International Dark Sky Association. This brightening of the night sky comes from light sources like street lamps beamed straight up or reflected off the ground. Not only is artificial light wasting energy and obscuring our appreciation of the night sky, it might have effects on the sleep schedules and behaviors of nocturnal wildlife. The SKYGLOW team put together a book and are working on the video seriesdocumenting what dark skies North America has left.

Mauna Kea’s peak features some of the most pristine skies on Earth, which makes it important for astronomers—the isolation and dry air prevents interference and allows the telescopes to take crisp pictures. Local laws also keep light pollution at bay, according to the University of Hawaii. One of the mountain’s telescopes even joined the recent world-wide attempt to snap a picture of the black hole at the center of our galaxy, a photo we may see by the end of the year.

But Mauna Kea takes on another dimension when it comes to human interference. The site is sacred ground to native Hawaiians, which has led to clashes between protesting locals and scientists hoping to take advantage of the mountaintop to build the bigger and better stargazing instruments, like the upcoming Thirty Meter Telescope.

Controversies aside, the video is cool as hell.

From 1945 until the practice was ended in 1963 with the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the US conducted 210 above-ground nuclear weapons tests. The majority of those took place at the Nevada National Security Site, then on remote Pacific atolls. Obviously, since the purpose of the tests was to understand this powerful new class of weapon, all of the tests were captured with multiple high-speed cameras (running at roughly 2,400 frames per second). And until now, many of those films have languished in classified vaults. But Greg Spriggs and his colleagues at Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LLNL) are rescuing and declassifying many of them, posting them on YouTube in the process.

The first 64 declassified films were uploaded this week, with footage from Operations Upshot-Knothole, Castle, Teapot, Plumbbob, Hardtack I, Hardtack II, and Dominic. And they’re utterly mesmerizing. In fact, they’re truly awesome, in the literal sense of the word.

For example, watch how the fireball grows down along the test tower and guide wires during the initial states of the Tesla shot during Operation Teapot. This test took place on March 1, 1955 in Nevada and was just 7 kilotons—a mere firecracker compared to later thermonuclear devices.
