There’s a shakeup at Nest today. As was previously rumored back in November, Google just announced Nest will no longer be a standalone Alphabet company; instead, it will merge with the Google hardware team. The current Nest CEO, Marwan Fawaz, will report to Google Hardware SVP Rick Osterloh.

Nest has struggled since its was purchased by Google/Alphabet in 2014. Under Google, Nest was given a huge influx of resources which it used to quadruple its employee headcount and purchase Dropcam. But none of these extra resources resulted in new or improved products. Nest’s CEO and co-founder, Tony Fadell, left the company two years after the acquisition, at which point Nest’s only “new” product under Google was a rebranded Dropcam.

Once the current Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz took over, Nest finally started to push new products out the door. It launched the very expensive $ 300 Nest Cam IQ and the even more expensive Nest Secure home security system, which runs $ 500 for a starter pack. And their cost doesn’t end there: both work best with a monthly subscription fee.

The fact that has Facebook four distinct Snapchat-like offerings for its main social network, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp can be pretty confusing. Someone in the company must have realized that, because it’s making things just a bit less puzzling by merging Facebook Stories and Messenger Day. The fused experience is now simply called “Stories,” and any photo, video or slideshow you upload appear both on Facebook itself and the Messenger app.

While there’s no need to manually cross-post anything anymore, you can choose who sees your post. You can make your post public, visible to both Facebook and Messenger friends or visible to Facebook friends only. If none of those sounds ideal, you can either make a custom list or hide Stories from specific people on both platforms.

By combining the features, Facebook is likely hoping to entice more people to use the ephemeral offering. Having separate versions for Facebook and Messenger made no sense anyway and might be one of the reasons why they’re nowhere near as successful as their counterpart on Instagram. Just a month ago, the company started testing a useful tool that allows you to cross-post Stories from Instagram to Facebook. Its addition could make things even simpler, but as with any experimental Facebook feature, it might or might not see a wider release.

To make sure the new version of Stories reaches as many potential users as possible, it will be available to Groups, Events and Pages. Facebook is also bring it to FB Lite in case its users do have enough bandwidth to view their friends’ posts.

Disney has combined four of its kid-friendly streaming apps into one all-encompassing one called DisneyNOW. It has everything that the separate Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior and Radio Disney apps had, but all of the content is now consolidated under a single main app.

DisneyNOW has full show episodes and livestreaming of shows airing on Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD when you use a valid cable, satellite or digital service — such as Hulu and YouTube TV — login. Multiple users can create their own profiles and the app will hold their spot in shows they don’t finish and suggest content they might like based on what they watch. DisneyNOW also has games, more of which will be added monthly, and Disney Channel original movies. However, it doesn’t have theatrical releases. Disney is saving those for its Netflix rival set to launch sometime in 2019.

DisneyNOW is available now on iOS, Apple TV, Android, Fire tablets and Roku with Fire TV, Android TV and web support coming in 2018.

Uber is merging its business in Russia with Yandex, a dominant player in the Internet business in that nation and Eastern Europe.

The move is an unusual one for Uber, a company that doesn’t have a reputation for backing down against competitors. Still, Uber has become embroiled in internal controversy and litigation back home, and that has perhaps sapped some of the company’s desire to compete in Russia and several other Eastern European markets.

The assets of the two companies will merge into a still-unnamed new company, with Yandex owning 59.3%, Uber owning 36.6%, and employees owning 4.1%, according to a press release sent out by Uber Thursday. The CEO of Yandex.Taxi, Yandex’s ride-sharing division, will become CEO of the combined business.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation, the organization behind the micro-computer designed as an easy point of entry for tinkerers and budding programmers, is merging with not-for-profit coding club network CoderDojo.

For the uninitiated, the Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized device that serves as the building blocks for computers, with users able to construct fully working PCs or machines that control their connected home. It has come a long way since its original launch back in 2012, with a third generation model going on sale last February for $ 35. The Foundation went on to sell more than 10 million of its mini computers, introduced a $ 130 starter kit, and recently launched a new Wi-Fi-enabled entry-level Raspberry Pi that costs $ 10.

Founded out of Dublin in 2011, CoderDojo is one of a number of coding club networks designed to teach young people how to code and build apps, games, websites, and more.

Though it kicked off in Ireland, CoderDojo has since gone on to offer 1,250 CoderDojos in 69 countries.

That the Raspberry Pi Foundation and CoderDojo have decided to merge is something of a curveball, but it does ultimately make sense, given the complementary nature of their respective work — they both help teach young minds the fundamentals of building technology products. One providers the hardware, the other provide the knowledge.

“Raspberry Pi and CoderDojo have each accomplished amazing things over the last six years,” noted Philip Colligan, CEO of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, in a blog post. “Now, we see an opportunity to do even more by joining forces.”

As a combined force, the duo plan to almost quadruple the number of CoderDojos globally to around 5,000 by the end of the decade.

A cynical person may see this as an effort by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to shoehorn its own devices into CoderDojo classes, but that ain’t so, according to Colligan, who says that CoderDojos will “continue to be platform-neutral, using whatever kit they need to help young people learn.”

In real terms, the merger actually means that the Raspberry Pi Foundation will become a “corporate member of the CoderDojo Foundation,” which Colligan likens a little bit to being a shareholder, but “without any financial interest.”

The CoderDojo Foundation will continue to run as an independent charity based out of Ireland, and the official word is that little will change as a result of this merger. It’s merely a case of two not-for-profit organizations pooling their resources and joining forces for the greater good.
