Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who was harassed and threatened outside her home by a man with a gun, says the increase in threats to Congressional members is linked to rhetoric about the 2020 election by former President Donald Trump and other members of the GOP. 

In July, an armed man was arrested and charged with felony stalking after camping outside Jayapal's neighborhood and threatening her. One neighbor told police she heard the man shout: "Go back to India, I'm going to kill you."

Jayapal told MSNBC's Ali Velshi on Saturday that she wanted people to understand the connections between stolen election rhetoric and the increased threats that Congressional members are facing.

"I think that what has changed is there's a sense that everything is so unfair and it's been propelled by Donald Trump," Jayapal said. "'The institutions are unfair,' and that the only recourse is to violence and that is an extremely dangerous thing. And we saw it come to fruition on January 6, and now in ways that you know, I've seen outside my door."

On Thursday, Jayapal released voicemails of threats against her and her family. The person in the recording tells Jayapal she is going to get "exactly what you deserve" and tells her to "go back to India."

"Typically, political figures don't show their vulnerability," Jayapal wrote. "I chose to do so here because we cannot accept violence as our new norm. We also cannot accept the racism and sexism that underlies and propels so much of this violence."

Threats to lawmakers in congress have increased by 144% since 2022, according to Capitol Police data shared with Axios. In the first three months of 2022, nearly 2,000 threats made to Congress members resulted in the Capitol Police opening cases.

Congress members like California Rep. Eric Swalwell and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who is on the House Committee Investigating Jan. 6, have also released threatening voicemails targeting them and their families. 

In a Washington Post profile released Thursday, Jayapal recounted her experiences dealing with harassing and threatening voicemails. She said she often wanted to hide the threats because she didn't want people to know how they emotionally affected her.

"But at the same time," Jayapal told the Post, "it's important people understand how ubiquitous this is, and how much a part of our psyche it is taking up."

  • Trump called the FBI "vicious monsters" controlled by left-wing radicalists at a Saturday rally.
  • Two Jan. 6 panel members warned that Trump may be inciting attacks on the FBI with that speech.
  • The attack came after the FBI searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate and found secret government documents.

Members of the House January 6 committee said that former President Donald Trump's criticisms of the FBI at Saturday rally may be a way of inciting his supporters to violence. 

At the rally in Pennsylvania for GOP midterm candidates, Trump claimed the August 8 FBI raid at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida was part of a plot by his political foes. 

"The FBI and the Justice Department have become vicious monsters, controlled by radical left scoundrels lawyers and the media who tell them what to do … and when to do it," Trump said.

Rep. Liz Cheney, one of two Republicans sitting on the committee, said his shows Trump was deliberately seeking to stir violence. 

"Trump is attacking law enforcement and yet again using language he knows will provoke violence. Only one group of Americans has a chance to diminish this danger — Republicans," tweeted Cheney, who was recently ousted from her Wyoming congressional seat following a campaign by Trump. 

"If my fellow Republicans fail to step up to stop this, they will share the blame for all that follows."

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a California Democrat on the January 6 committee, gave similar remarks in a Sunday interview with CNN.

When host Jim Acosta asked Lofgren if Trump's comments constituted incitement, she said: "Well, potentially yes."

"In the lead-up to January 6th, there were extravagant claims made meant to inflame public opinion, and that is what is happening here."

"I think it's meant to turn people against law-enforcement officers," she continued. "And we've seen that sometimes that rhetoric reaches people who are prepared to act on it."

Lofgren cited the recent case of a Trump supporter who attacked an FBI office in Cincinnati after posting messages about the Mar-a-Lago raid online. The supporter was later killed by law-enforcement officers.

The Justice Department has warned of a sharp increase in threats faced by FBI officials in the wake of the raid, and has arrested several other people it alleges to have made threats against the agency. 

Trump and his allies have unleashed a furious series of attacks on the agency following the raid. Sen. Lindsey Graham warned last week that Trump supporters would riot if the former president were indicted, prompting critics to say he was making a veiled threat.

The FBI believes Trump may have violated several laws in taking highly classified documents and other government records to Mar-a-Lago after leaving office, and that his aides tried to obstruct their investigation. 

At the same time the former president is facing multiple investigations into his bid to overturn his 2020 election defeat, with the January 6 committee saying that Trump deliberately sought to stir his supporters to attack the Capitol in an incendiary speech ahead of the riot.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the riot. On Friday, he also said he could offer pardons to all of those convicted in relation to the attack if reelected.

Anyway, Kit Harington hosted SNL this weekend, and the broadcast had barely gotten underway when the Thrones jokes began. A few minutes into Harington’s monologue, he started taking questions from audience members, most of whom wanted to know how the last season of HBO’s fantasy drama will end. (Even more Thrones hijinks happened later.)

Even Harington’s co-stars, who were peppered among the studio audience, pressed him for spoilers. “Could you just give us a general sense of how it ends?” Emilia Clarke asked, but not even the Mother of Dragons could drag a hint out of him. “Oh hey, do you remember in Season 6 when we had sex?” she asked before sitting down. When Harington said he did, she added, “Did you know they filmed that?” (Ha! And also: Season 6?! Daenerys and Aegon Targaryen Jon didn’t hit the sheets until Season 7.)

Jon Bradley, who plays Thrones‘ Samwell Tarly also showed up, asking whether he and Harington would still be friends now that the epic series is coming to a close… a sentiment echoed moments later by the Night King (whom we’re pretty sure was just Pete Davidson in a lot of makeup).

Harington’s real-life wife and former co-star Rose Leslie rounded out the special guests, telling him that she didn’t care about how Thrones will end, because “I’m not a nerd. My question is: What are going to do for money now?”

Seven people, including the gunman, were left dead after a mass shooting in the southern Thai province of Chumphon, AFP reports citing local police. The horrific incident occurred 10 minutes after midnight, when a “heavily” drunk man, identified as Sucheep Sornsung, opened fire on his family members apparently after feeling slighted by his in-laws during the New Year’s party. “All of the victims were his family members including his nine-year-old son and six-year-old daughter,” a police official said. The perpetrator killed himself after the rampage, it is reported.

Dozens of princes and cousins from powerful branches of the Al Saud family want to see a change in the line of succession but would not act while King Salman — the crown prince’s 82-year-old father — is still alive, the sources said. They recognize that the king is unlikely to turn against his favorite son, known in the West as MbS.

Children In Need 2018 was working like a well-oiled machine this year – until Tess Daly’s announcement.

As the show continued to celebrate the carers who helped the organisation raise money for the children.

Tess even took some time out to personally thank one carer in the audience.

But after that, she decided to thank everyone in the audience who had gone to great lengths to raise money for the evening.

Tess began: “It may be there are other people who help – people who don’t wear capes.

“They might shop in your supermarket, and they might get on your bus to work.

“They might even be sat right here in our studio audience! They could even be behind you!”

As Tess announced: “Please stand up,” the group of carers sat behind her stood up to applaud.

But one of the audience members mistook this demand to mean her, leaving her to stand up beside them.

Realising she had stood up at the wrong moment, she quickly sat back down.

Tess continued on, however, as she told the rest of the audience to stand up in stages.

Once she introduced the heroes on her left, and around her, she went on to say: “I think these people deserve a standing ovation.

“Please stand up, they’re real life superheroes!”

At this point all audience members stood to applaud the charity workers.

Fans of the show noticed this small blunder, and began writing about it on Twitter.

One wrote: “Did anyone see that woman stand up!? #childreninneed2018.”

Another said: “Howling at that lady standing up by mistake #childreninneed2018.”

“God bless the woman who stood up when Tess Daly said stand up but she was talking about the carers behind her #childreninneed2018,” a third continued.

Luckily, Tess didn’t see any more blunders during her time on the show.

Children in Need airs tonight on BBC One, and EastEnders continues Monday at 8pm on BBC One.
