Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab has exposed a powerful malware that infiltrates smartphones to secretly mine cryptrocurrency and carry out DDoS attacks.

Loapi, the malicious software, is so power-hungry that it can overheat your battery and fry your phone. The virus physically destroyed the Kaspersky Lab test phone just two days after being infected with it.

Kaspersky Lab wrote a blog detailing how Loapi works and the range of pernicious activities it can carry out. “Because of the constant load caused by the mining module and generated traffic, the battery bulged and deformed the phone cover,” the blog says.

Loapi is Trojan malware that is most commonly picked up by users who click on ad banner advertising in adult content apps. Pop up advertisements for fake anti-virus software is also a common vehicle for the malware.

Once on the phone, Loapi constantly asks for administrator rights. “It doesn’t take no for an answer; notification after notification appears on the screen until the desperate user finally gives in and taps OK,” Kaspersky Lab explained.

The insidious app even shuts down the settings window and locks the screen if the person tries to deny it administrator rights. If the user tries to download anti-virus software to protect the phone, Loapi flags them as malware and demands it be removed.

After seizing administrator rights, the versatile malware manipulates the phone into carrying out a number of functions including mining the Monero cryptocurrency, signing the phone’s owner up to paid subscription services, plaguing them with more ads and even turning the phone into a zombie to be used in DDoS attacks.

Spain’s national police warned people about the malware via Twitter.

Kaspersky advise that the best way to avoid having your phone infected with Loapi is to only download apps from official stores; disabling the installation of apps from unknown sources; only downloading apps that you really need; and using reliable anti-virus software.

And now, their conversation has been shared. The Imgur post was titled: “Veteran grandpa was asked by a little girl if he would do it all again. He said, ‘Yes, for you.’”

The heart-warming image has now gone viral, with over 101,000 views online.

Commenters were very moved by the picture and the story behind it.

One wrote: “That is a hero. A person who would willingly go through hell a second time to protect those they love.”

Another noted: “The Greatest Generation, by far.”

One simply said: “I salute you, Sir.”

This is not the first time a child interacting with an army veteran has gone viral.

Earlier this year, a video of a Queen’s Guardsman posing with a child in costume swept the internet.

Filmed at Windsor Castle, the clip shows the boy watching Changing the Guard.

As the four guards march in unison past him, the little boy, who is standing with his mum, salutes.

At first, it doesn’t appear that they have noticed – but then something magical happens.

With his official duties complete, one of the guards returns and marches towards the boy.

He stops in front of him and beckons him to come towards him.

The boy rushed forward and turns around to pose for a picture, raising his arm in salute.

Crafted by a trio of developers who created (either alone or as part of a team) The Swapper, Environmental Station Alpha, and Crayon Physics, Noita unleashes your powerful magic upon a simulated dynamic world. Fluids slosh and flow, wood burns and shatters, ice melts and crumbles away, lava hardens into stone, water freezes, gas ignites, and so on. Your elemental magic can use those interactions to your advantage, filling an area with lava or cracking upon a vat of acid to flood a room.

Of course that means you have to be careful not to destroy yourself in the process, as the resulting physics simulation brings down the ceiling or sends you tumbling into the lake you just electrified. Your wizard will also have offensive spells to attack directly, and increased agility to leap and hover across the vast ruins and caverns, but as befitting a roguelite, the threat of permadeath looms over every risky manuever and fight.

Noita is slated to release on PC, first on Early Access, although there’s no release timeframe yet. You can find more details on the game and developer Nolla Games through their site and Twitter page.
