There seems to be a new movie with a killer shark in it at least every other year, and it’s up to the filmmaker whether that movie is going to be good like Jaws, bad like Jaws: The Revenge or so bad it’s good like Deep Blue Sea. But somehow, The Meg toes the line by having so much insane shark attack action juxtaposed with some pretty serious drama. It’s all a little perplexing.

Watch as The Meg Honest Trailer sinks its teeth into the aquatic Jason Statham action thriller.

The Meg Honest Trailer

The Meg is one of those movies that somehow remains entertaining despite the fact that we basically see the same movie happen twice in the same movie. It’s like getting the original and the sequel in the same movie, and you get two Megalodons for the price of one.

However, when you think about it, that seems pretty lazy, especially since The Meg is based on a series of books (seriously, there are six of them, even though the Honest Trailer only points out five). In fact, the original book features The Meg fighting a tyrannosaurus rex. Not only that, but instead of Jason Statham getting acrobatic and stabby with the giant shark at the end, his character rips the heart of the shark out from the inside. If you’re gonna make a crazy shark movie, go for the gold. But I guess we did get a giant squid in this movie, so maybe it evens out.

The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, see how Pixar delivered the amazingly animated hair effects of Incredibles 2. Plus, watch as director Jon Turteltaub breaks down a scene from the sci-fi action thriller The Meg, and watch Sir Patrick Stewart get emotional while talking about Jean Luc Picard in the full video announcing the forthcoming, new Star Trek series featuring the Starfleet captain.

First up, director Jon Turteltaub breaks down a sequence from The Meg, which is in theaters now. For this particular scene, production used a mix of footage that was shot on location, in water tanks and on a soundstage. But they all come together thanks to the magic of digital effects used to blend them all together.

Next up, a software engineer at Pixar (via CG Record) takes us through the process of animating what is called full-fidelity hair, which makes it look the most natural it ever has in any movie from the animation studio. Using examples of Elastigirl, Violet and the trash-stealing raccoon, you can see how involved the process is of making the hair look realistic.

‘The Meg’, ‘Rampage’ and the Problem With 2018’s Giant Monster Movies https://briefnews.eu/the-meg-rampage-and-the-problem-with-2018s-giant-monster-movies/ https://briefnews.eu/the-meg-rampage-and-the-problem-with-2018s-giant-monster-movies/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2018 15:24:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-meg-rampage-and-the-problem-with-2018s-giant-monster-movies/ the meg tv spot

A couple of times this year at the movies, I’ve found myself thinking about one of the great lines from one of the great movies about the movies. “Wallace Beery! Wrestling picture! Whaddya need, a road map?” So goes the snappy one-liner from Michael Lerner’s cynical studio executive in the Joel and Ethan Coen masterpiece Barton Fink, and so it echoed in my head as I sat, disappointed, through two different-but-not-exactly genre films.

In April, the film was Rampage. Last week, the movie was The Meg. I left the film feeling a bit like Lerner’s character, chastising the pretentious Barton Fink. These movies should not have needed the road maps.

It’s easy, by which I mean “lazy,” to paint critics as being humorless scolds who are either unwilling or unable to meet a movie on its own terms. If a critic takes to task a genre picture like The Meg, you might hear a fan (or sometimes people involved in the production) suggesting “Well, what do you expect? It’s not trying to be Citizen Kane.” (Feel free to fill in the blank with another prestigious title if the 1941 film doesn’t float your boat.) It’s easy and lazy because critics such as myself – brace yourself for this shock – tend to like things that are fun. We’re only a couple weeks removed from the genuinely wonderful Mission: Impossible – Fallout, a movie that’s about as fun of an action blockbuster as they come.

When I walked into both Rampage and The Meg, I went in expecting a movie like what was promised in the ads. The former film features Dwayne Johnson and a modern-day King Kong; the latter film features Jason Statham facing off against a mammoth shark and the tagline “Pleased to Eat You”. Not only did I walk into each screening expecting movies exactly as gleefully ridiculous as what was promised, but I wanted badly to enjoy them. (Not that this should have to be said, but critics also tend to want to enjoy the movies they see, because otherwise, they’ve wasted a perfectly good two hours on a bad movie.)

The Meg, especially, felt like it could benefit from the unspoken knowledge of what being an August release means. While the so-called summer movie season goes well past the actual summer these days, August is usually not a time for marquee releases. Films like The Meg can capitalize on good timing – the recent Shark Week – and people’s desire to spend a couple hours away from the house and in air conditioning. Plus, Warner Bros. Pictures, which coincidentally released both Rampage and The Meg, has its own cult shark movie in Deep Blue Sea. The Meg could have been Deep Blue Sea 2.0. That would have been great. If only.

Rampage Honest Trailer

And Rampage could have been a truly goofy take on an old-school video game. The ads for both of these movies suggest at least one thing: WB’s marketing department has a really good handle on what people want from these kinds of movies. It’s not enough for films like Rampage and The Meg to have goofy premises. They have to acknowledge how stupidly ridiculous the setups are. The ads for these movies, essentially, were self-aware, but the films don’t have nearly so much self-awareness to survive. There’s a reason why dialogue like “…Of course the wolf flies” shows up in the ads for Rampage. It’s funny. It’s funny because someone – Dwayne Johnson, or the writers, or someone else – understood that you have to have dialogue like this with such inherently silly plots.

But there’s not enough self-awareness in either of these films, just a couple of tossed-off lines of dialogue from the hero briefly acknowledging how crazy their predicaments are. They make for good moments in a trailer, but neither Rampage nor The Meg have enough of those moments in full. Rampage is slightly more successful, if only because enough of the people on camera understood exactly what they signed up for.

For example: Jake Lacy (who I still know best as that one salesman nicknamed Plop on the final season of The Office) plays the boneheaded, preppie/loony brother of the true mastermind behind the pathogen that makes a trio of animals into city-destructing giants in Rampage. Lacy delivers the kind of performance that goes over the top and lands on the other side. He seems to grasp exactly how goofy this film is, and modulated his performance to match. It’s notable primarily because, unfortunately, no one else in the film is willing to join him, thus making his performance singular in good and bad ways. In retrospect, I wish the rest of the cast joined him in his play to be super-campy. But being the only one has its downsides.

The Meg Reviews

The Meg has a number of moments that feel as those they were tailor-made to be hammered home in the marketing, moments that suggest a truly campy film. There is the shot when the thought-extinct megalodon shark tries to chomp down on very thick glass in an underwater outpost, facing off against a little girl who watches in horror. And the film’s climax features Jason Statham treating the underwater shuttle he’s driving like an X-Wing Fighter as he evades the eponymous shark. But those are two moments in a 113-minute movie that feels a lot longer, and is weirdly bloodless for a film about a killer shark.

Both Johnson and Statham are capable of toplining movies as goofy as these. Frankly, their presence is part of what makes these films so potentially intriguing, in the same way that last month’s Dwayne Johnson movie, Skyscraper, could have been exciting. Dwayne Johnson in a supercharged Die Hard! What’s not to like? Unfortunately, a lot, as Johnson’s heroic character has no genuine flaws, just a prosthetic leg that feels like it exists because otherwise, it’d be a movie where the physically imposing and dominant Johnson saves the day with little to no pushback. (And Skyscraper may actually invoke the word “family” more than the Fast and Furious movies, which is saying something.)

Rampage Trailer - Dwayne Johnson

We’re over a decade removed from a movie that feels like it was the Patient Zero for films like Rampage and The Meg – Snakes on a Plane. That film had three selling points: the title, Samuel L. Jackson, and that R-rated line of dialogue. Rampage and The Meg both had big names above the title, an easy and ridiculous elevator pitch, and very little else. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are both charismatic performers, just as Samuel L. Jackson is. But if you put any of these men in a story that feels like an escapee from the SyFy Movie of the Week, all it feels like is that these guys are slumming for a paycheck. At least films like Deep Blue Sea – co-starring Jackson, of course – tried to have some level of wit and intelligence amidst the cheese.

As the blockbuster summer of 2018 comes to an end, it appears audiences were hungry for Jason Statham and a giant prehistoric shark to give them some last minute thrills.

The Meg surprised box office experts by having a much larger opening weekend than projected. As of Wednesday last week, analysts were predicting The Meg would only rake in about $ 20 million domestically. But The Meg box office total ended up being over double that, so much that the movie opened larger than some of the more anticipated titles from earlier this year.

Forbes reports The Meg has pulled down an estimated $ 44.5 million this weekend, and that includes an impressive $ 4.1 million haul from IMAX tickets alone. Sounds like MoviePass being down on Friday and keeping people from specifically seeing The Meg didn’t hurt the Warner Bros. opener all that much, though it might have prevented the opening weekend from being even bigger.

Exhibitor Relations points out that The Meg had such a surprisingly good opening weekend that it ended up surpassing other celebrated debuts like Ready Player One and Rampage from back in the spring and other summer hits like Ocean’s 8 and The Equalizer 2. Sounds like a perfect storm of star power, a fun concept and perhaps name recognition from the fact that the movie is based on a popular series of novels by Steve Alten.

If the movie has legs, it could end up with $ 140 million domestic after having this kind of an opening weekend. But if it performs more along the lines of San Andreas, a movie that had a similar opening in 2015, it’ll land something more like $ 127 million. Since the movie cost $ 150 million produce, the movie shouldn’t have a problem turning a profit, especially when you take into account the stellar performance oversas.

The Meg landed another $ 97 million in international markets, including a massive $ 50.3 million from China. That’s not surprising since the movie is basically a Chinese co-production, but that gives it an edge over some movies that open in the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, Variety reports Sony’s horror flick Slender Man didn’t have quite as commendable of a debut. The movie landed in fourth place with $ 11.3 million, but since it only cost $ 10 million to make, the studio certainly isn’t upset with that kind of performance.

As for BlacKkKlansman, it opened in fifth place with $ 10.8 million, though it did that from only 1,500 locations. That’s not a huge debut, but it’s enough to give Spike Lee his best opening weekend in over 10 years. Plus, the film has been landing plenty of critical acclaim with a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore. The fact that MoviePass locked it out from being accessible from most theaters could have had a bit of an impact, but likely not enough to make a huge difference.

As for the fourth weekend opener, the family film Dog Days, it debuted with a pathetic $ 2.6 million, putting it in 12th place, opening below movies that have been out for a month or more.

Summer is here in full-force, so it’s time to embrace big, dumb blockbusters. Like The Meg, a movie about Jason Statham fighting a Megalodon shark that just happens to not be extinct, somehow. I’m sure the film will explain this, but really, who cares? We don’t need answers. We just need to see Statham vs. shark. While you wait for The Meg to splash into theaters, watch a new The Meg TV spot below.

The Meg TV Spot

Say what you will about The Meg – the marketing department has been doing a pretty good job selling it. There is no chance in hell a film like this will turn out to be high art, but at the very least, it should deliver on the promise of seeing Jason Statham stare-down a massive shark. Will there be a scene where Statham punches the snark on its big stupid shark face? We can only hope.

The Meg is adapted from Steve Alten’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. The book was cashing-in on the Jurassic Park craze of pitting modern-day humans against prehistoric monsters. The concept – man vs. Megalodon – was inherently cinematic. But it took a while for the book to find its way to the screen. Disney hooked the rights to the book immediately, but the movie floundered in development hell for years. By 2015, Warner Bros. had control of the rights, and hired Eli Roth to helm. Roth eventually sailed away from the project, citing creative differences. Jon Turteltaub, director of the Nic Cage vs. America’s Secrets movie National Treasure, ended up netting the job after Roth left.

And now here we are. Statham plays “expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor”, who is “recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew-and the ocean itself-from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.”

I love that Statham’s character encountered this big-ass shark once before, but apparently no one knows about it. I guess he just kept it a secret for some reason? Smooth move, Statham.

The Meg opens August 10, 2018.

Jaws may have set the bar for killer shark movies, but even if nothing comes close to Steven Spielberg’s 1975 smash hit, shark films will never go out of style in Hollywood. Both The Shallows and 47 Meters Down performed well at the box office recently, and now we’re about to see The Meg, which pits a giant prehistoric beast against a cast that includes Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson.

Watch the first The Meg trailer below, and read about the experience of seeing the trailer in 4DX.

The Meg Trailer

This looks just ridiculous enough that it might be fun. Sure, parts of it reminded me of a slicker, more expensive version of the so-bad-it’s-good 2002 movie Shark Attack 3: Megolodon, but at least it appears The Meg knows better than to take itself too seriously. Whether Rainn Wilson’s quippy funny guy character will work in context remains to be seen, and I personally have my fingers crossed that Statham gets to spin-kick the shark in the face before the final credits roll.

The Meg in 4DX

Last week, Warner Bros. shuttled a group of journalists to a theater in downtown Los Angeles equipped with 4DX, the technology that rocks your seat and adds blasts of water, smoke, and other effects that correspond with the events happening on the screen. I’d never tried 4DX before, and as someone who regularly gets motion sickness on similar theme park rides that jostle you around while you watch a big screen, I was a little worried I’d hurl all over the place. Thankfully, it wasn’t nearly that intense.

The row of seats calmly and even pleasantly pitched and tilted us along with the camera as it swooped through a hallway, jerking us around a bit when the shark’s jaws smashed into the glass. And of course there were water effects: streams of water shot up in a straight line from our headrests and sprinkled down onto us, which might be nice if you’re looking for respite from the sun on a hot summer day.

But the more I think about it, the more I probably won’t be seeing a full movie in 4DX any time soon. The water is an appropriate effect, but seeing it happen in practice means that if you’re sitting in the middle or the back of the theater, you’re watching as dozens of streams of water fire up in front of the screen each time the effect is utilized. It’s an odd thing to behold. And there’s also a smoke effect that blasts in your face during jump scares, and seeing that smoke shooting out from the back of the seat in front of me was distracting enough to momentarily divert my attention from the screen. I’m sure more adventurous moviegoers than I will have a total blast with this, but if I’m going to see The Meg, I’d rather see all of the movie and not be worried about what moments I might miss because of these “immersive” environmental effects.

All in all, it wasn’t a bad afternoon. In addition to watching The Meg trailer a bit early, at least I got this video out of it:

What lies beneath the waves? It’s a question all of us have when we go to the beach, but the characters in Warner Bros.’ upcoming The Meg aren’t going to like the answer. A 70-foot shark called a megalodon that was long thought to be extinct has surfaced again, and only a Navy diver played by Jason Statham can save the day.

A new photo from the film has made its way online, along with a story from Statham about how he swam with real sharks to prepare for his role.

The Meg Photo

Director Jon Turteltaub‘s last three films were National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the all-but-forgotten 2010 live-action version of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and the old guy comedy Last Vegas. But his future is looking bright with The Meg, because who wouldn’t want to see Statham face off against a giant prehistoric shark?

Take a look at this new photo from Entertainment Weekly:

The Meg EW photo

That gives you a bit of an idea of the scale of this beast, which is far larger than the shark in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. But bigger doesn’t always necessarily mean better, and with a trailer for The Meg coming this Monday, that should give us a better sense of what to expect when the film debuts this summer. The film has been in the works since the late ’90s – that header image is concept art from an abandoned version of the movie.

Jason Statham Swam With Real Sharks

The Meg First Look

EW also has a quote from Statham about how he swam with actual sharks in order to prep for his character:

“On the early stages of the prep, we took a trip to Fiji, and we went diving with some bull sharks. They hand-feed them and it’s a spectacular thing to see. These things are three meters in length, huge big things. There were 20 or 30 of these things, and they were hand-feeding [them] big tuna heads, and we got very, very close, and it was a spectacular moment. To swim in close proximity to a big, three-meter shark, is to be recommended to all and everyone.”

In the film, which is based on Steve Alten’s 1997 novel, Statham plays a U.S. Navy diver named Jonas Taylor. But the British actor already has quite a history being in the water, since he was on the British national diving team before he began his acting career:

He’ll be doing a different type of diving here – and hopefully drop-kicking the shark in the jaw at some point, too.

The Meg will chomp its way into theaters on August 10, 2018.
