After kicking off last weekend with Skate America, the Grand Prix of Figure Skating makes its annual Canadian stop this week.

Here's who to watch in each competition at Skate Canada in Laval, Que.

Men: Cha, Messing take aim at Uno

The men's field is an interesting one boasting lots of talent, including world and Olympic silver medallist Shoma Uno of Japan. In theory, this is Uno's competition to lose.

That doesn't mean it'll be a walk in the park for the 20-year-old. Several talented skaters will be looking to take the top spot. The first name that jumps out is South Korea's 17-year-old Junhwan Cha — another talented skater in the Brian Orser stable who was strong enough to win the free program at the recent Autumn Classic event, ahead of two-time Olympic champion and training mate Yuzuru Hanyu. Impressive.

Other men looking to make their presence felt include a trio of Canadians, led by national silver medallist Keegan Messing. He's known for consistency and an ability to lay down powerful jumps in a charismatic style, reminiscent of three-time world champion Elvis Stojko.

Women: Medvedeva trying to bounce back

Way back in 2011, a tiny 14-year-old named Elizaveta Tuktamysheva walked into the media room after winning her first and only Skate Canada women's title. It seemed at the time like the dawn of a new age of Russian skating supernovas, and Tuktamysheva would go on to win the first world title in 10 years by a Russian woman in 2015. But injury, a growth spurt and inconsistent results prevented her from fulfilling the promise she showed early on.

There is something to be said for patience, though, and I see Tuktamysheva as a real title threat this week, even though she'll be going up against Olympic silver medallist and fellow Russian Evgenia Medvedeva. Medvedeva's pre-season competition at the Autumn Classic, her first since moving to Toronto to train with Orser, was sub-par, resulting in a silver medal behind American champion Bradie Tennell.

Skate Canada will be the test to see if Medvedeva has regained the unstoppable style that earned her two world and two Grand Prix Final titles.

Pairs: Moore-Towers and Marinaro back in form

Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres, the world pairs bronze medallists from France, are headed to Canada for a second time already this season. On their first trip, in September, they took the Autumn Classic title ahead of Canadians Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro. The rematch is on and I fully expect both teams to be in top form.

Moore-Towers had struggled with a foot injury that prevented her from doing certain pairs elements from the end of worlds in March until August. But, watching Moore-Towers and Marinaro skate at the Autumn Classic, you wouldn't have known she'd been hurt.

The month between that event and this one will no doubt have helped to boost their confidence. Look for the Canadians to not accept any step lower then the top of the podium without a fight.

Dance: Gilles and Poirier ready to challenge

The name of the game in ice dance is improvement. American champions and world silver medallists Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue are living proof of that after rising to a silver medal at this year's world championships. Polished and prepared with beautiful material, Hubbell and Donohue walked away with the Skate America title last weekend.

The American pair wrapped up a strong showing at Skate America as they took home the ice dance title after posting the best score in both the rhythm dance and free dance programs. 8:34

On paper, Hubbell and Donohue have the lead in terms of scores this season, but that doesn't mean I'm not expecting big things from Canada's four-time national silver medallists, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier. With beautiful and innovative material of their own, Gilles and Poirier are looking to add to their Skate Canada silver and bronze medals in their fourth trip to this Grand Prix event.

An intense showdown is about heat up the world of ice skating at the upcoming Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

This year, the battle for gold may come down to Russian figure skaters and training partners Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova.

Medvedeva, 18, has long been regarded as the favorite. She’s twice swept the world, European, and Russian championships. The Muscovite was also named one of Business Insider’s 50 most dominant athletes.

On the other hand, Zagitova recently spoiled Medvedeva’s winning streak at the 2018 European Figure Skating Championships, the Japan Times reported. The 15-year-old also scooped up gold at the last Russian Championships, which Medvedeva missed due to a broken foot.

The two Russians train with the same coach and will compete at this year’s Winter Games as neutral athletes. They’re two of the 169 Russian athletes who have been cleared to compete in Pyeongchang in the wake of their home country’s massive, government-sponsored doping scandal.

Here’s a look at what’s shaping up to be one of the most talked-about rivalries of the 2018 Winter Olympics:

Medvedeva first took to the ice at the age of three. She said her parents encouraged her to continue to pursue the sport in order to improve her figure and posture. The 18-year-old loves K-Pop, “Sailor Moon,” and actors Grant Gustin, David Tennant, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

 

The daughter of an ice hockey coach, Zagitova hails from Izhevsk, but lives with her grandmother in Moscow in order to train. She has a pet cat and two chinchillas, enjoys drawing and rhine-stoning, and has expressed interest in one day opening a Japanese restaurant.

 

Both skaters have a good chance of medaling. Sports Illustrated predicted Zagitova would take home gold, while Medvedeva would snag silver. International Figure Skating Magazine predicted the opposite.

Evgenia Medvedeva will miss Russia’s upcoming figure skating championships as the two-time world champion continues her recovery from a broken right foot, according to Russia’s figure skating federation.

The 18-year-old missed the Grand Prix Final with a fractured metatarsal and hasn’t competed since winning the NHK Trophy in November. She revealed to The Associated Press that her two Grand Prix wins this season were achieved on painkillers because of the break.

Medvedeva was part of a Russian delegation that spoke to the International Committee on the day it ruled to ban the country from the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The IOC is allowing individual Russian athletes “under strict conditions” to compete as an “Olympic Athlete from Russia [OAR]” without their national flag or anthem, according to the organization.

At the time, Medvedeva wouldn’t say if she’ll compete as a neutral. “It will be discussed more and it’s very early to ask questions like that,” she said.

The announcement comes one day after a report that reigning world and Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanu will miss Japan’s national championships due to an injured right ankle.

At the meeting, the 18-year-old addressed IOC members by delivering an emotional speech in which she outlined her wish to represent Russia in PyeongChang.

“I cannot accept the option that I would compete in the Olympic Games without the Russian flag as a neutral athlete,” Medvedeva said. “I am proud of my country, it is a great honor for me to represent it at the Games. It gives strength and inspires me during the performances.”

The two-time world champion, who hasn’t lost since November 2015 and is widely considered as number one contender to clinch the coveted Olympic title in the women’s individual skating, said that by banning the Russian flag, the IOC defies the Olympic Charter principle which grants equal opportunities to all competitors.

“If I perform without a national flag, I will not be able to compete in the team. At the same time, my other rivals will have this opportunity. The Olympic Charter states that all athletes should have equal opportunities. And in this case there can be no question of equality.”

Medvedeva also said the chance to compete in PyeongChang may be her only opportunity to win Olympic gold, as she is uncertain about her participation in the next Winter Games four years from now.

“In 2014, I was 14 years old. I have not even entered the adult national team of my country. For me personally, PyeongChang should be the first chance to plunge into the unique atmosphere of the Olympic Games. I do not understand why I and my Russian teammates can lose this chance.”

Medvedeva also insisted she tried to remain uninvolved in the ongoing doping row surrounding Russia. “I have until the last moment tried not to pay attention to the negative news related to Russian sports. I thought that we, the ‘clean’ Russian athletes, had nothing to worry about. If someone really committed anti-doping rule violations, we certainly do not have anything to do with this,” she said.

Following the IOC’s announcement to suspend Russia’s Olympic membership, Medvedeva stated it remains unclear whether she will take part in the Olympic figure skating tournament in South Korea.

“Will I go to the Olympics? It will be discussed later. It’s too early to ask such questions. Deep inside I feel I did everything I could. I was immensely happy to be here and to deliver my short speech [to the IOC]. I do hope that it produced the desired effect.
“I want to believe that Russia will turn this [doping] story into something positive. I know I’m supported by fans from around the world and I promise I will not give up and will continue working at full strength.”

The IOC ruling, based on the findings of the Disciplinary Commission headed by former Swiss president Samuel Schmid, prohibited Russian athletes from competing in PyeongChang under their national flag, and handed lifetime Olympic bans to former Russian Sports minister Vitaly Mitko and former deputy minister Yuri Nagornykh.

No members representing the Russian Ministry of Sport will be accredited for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. The Olympic anthem and the five interlaced rings flag will honor the victories of Russian athletes who will compete as neutrals.

The two-time world title holder took first spot at the NHK Trophy, posting the meet high of 79.99, but failing to exceed the her own mark from her previous competition of 80 points.

The skater’s previous short program achievement recorded in Moscow last month was almost one point higher. Medvedeva, however, continued following the winning path, which was set two years ago.

The 17-year-old hasn’t lost a single figure skating competition since November 2015, when she was beaten by compatriot Elena Radionova at the Rostelecom Cup.

After Friday’s short program the reigning world and European champion was followed by the Olympic bronze medalist Carolina Kostner of Italy, who was more than five points behind the leader. Russia’s Polina Tsurskaya, who is also trained by Medvedeva’s coach, Eteri Tutberidze, closed up the top three with 70.04 points. Medvedeva is known to be curious about Japanese culture, particularly with anime and manga cartoons.

Her Instagram page is replete with pictures of anime designed toys, bags and pencils which she receives as presents from her Japanese fans.

Competing at the NHK Trophy, Medvedeva immediately seized the opportunity to immerse herself in the local culture as she was spotted wearing a traditional Japanese kimono while walking along the streets of Kyoto.

Earlier this year, her devotion to Japanese anime was well illustrated during a performance in Niigata Prefecture, where she skated in an outfit of cartoon hero ‘Sailor Moon.’ After the event she was greeted by Naoko Takeuchi, an artist and author of ‘Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon,’ who presented Medvedeva with a hand-drawn picture.

Medvedeva also skated to the original opening theme from ‘Sailor Moon’ at the 2017 World Team Trophy in Tokyo, choosing the same costume of a schoolgirl from the anime series.
