When the law enforcers finally stopped her by puncturing the tires of the ambulance with spike strips, Christy Lynn Woods refused to admit any wrongdoing – and bizarrely blamed the medics instead.

“Why did they leave it [the ambulance] unlocked?” she told the officers, according to the court papers seen by the Oregonian.

The 37-year-old, who previously had numerous run-ins with law, also insisted that she was “a good [expletive] driver” and “didn’t try to hurt anyone.”

However, understanding of the situation gradually came to Wood as she was later recorded saying: “Oh my God, I can’t believe I just did that.” The woman also added that she realized that the stunt would most likely see her put behind bars.

Wood came across an unattended emergency vehicle in the street in downtown Roseburg last Sunday and made a swift decision to take it for a ride. When the paramedics came out of a nearby building with a patient, who needed to be urgently taken to hospital, they were shocked to find out that their ambulance was gone.

The hijacker initially drove around downtown, but when a state trooper attempted to pull her over, she took to the freeway and stepped on the gas. During the tense 30-mile chase, the runaway ambulance reached the speed of 85 miles per hour (around 137 km/h).

At some point, Wood rammed a police cruiser, which attempted to clear the traffic in front of her. The car spun out of control and hit the highway’s wire median, with the officer behind the wheel receiving minor injuries.

When the tires of the ambulance were punctured, Wood drove into a gas station, got out of the vehicle and dropped to the ground. “I gave up when I should,” she told the policeman, who was arresting her, according to the court papers.

The woman now faces 13 charges, including assault, interfering with paramedics, criminal mischief, reckless driving and driving while suspended.

Wood was known to the law enforcers as a troublemaker: she has been arrested 39 times by the Douglas County police since 2013, KOIN-TV reported. In February, she was convicted of second-degree disorderly conduct after trying to hit bar patrons with a bottle and resisting arrest.

Medics warn of dangerous ‘kissing bug’ disease as 300,000 Americans already infected https://briefnews.eu/medics-warn-of-dangerous-kissing-bug-disease-as-300000-americans-already-infected/ https://briefnews.eu/medics-warn-of-dangerous-kissing-bug-disease-as-300000-americans-already-infected/#respond Sat, 25 Aug 2018 21:06:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/medics-warn-of-dangerous-kissing-bug-disease-as-300000-americans-already-infected/ Health experts are warning that the potentially lethal parasitic disease spread by ‘kissing bugs’ has taken hold in the US, with more than 300,000 Americans contracting it.

The Chagas disease, which used to be contained in Central and South America (infecting at least eight million people) has reached the US, infecting hundreds of thousands across 27 states. It is also becoming more common in Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, the UK, Australia and Japan.

A statement from the American Heart Association (AHA), aimed at increasing global awareness among physicians, warns that US doctors need to learn to recognize and treat Chagas before a devastating outbreak occurs.

“Early detection of Chagas disease is critical, allowing prompt initiation of therapy when the evidence for cure is strong,” wrote Caryn Bern, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California in San Francisco, in the online statement.

Doctors can detect the disease through a simple blood test and, if caught early, it can be treated by medication. “If untreated, infection is lifelong and can be life-threatening,” the CDC warns.

The Chagas disease is caused by a parasite transmitted by a blood-sucking insect called triatomine, known as the “kissing bug,” because it tends to bite people’s faces near their mouth and can cause strokes and heart failure. About 30 percent of infected people can develop life-threatening complications, including chronic heart disease.

The bug then spreads the parasite, known as Trypanosoma cruzi (T cruzi), by defecating near the bite, which the victims can then unwittingly move into the open wound, or their eyes or mouth.

The disease has been labelled a silent killer because 70 percent of people don’t develop any signs of infection. Symptoms can include fever, lethargy, aches, rashes and swollen glands.

UK medics treated Skripals for opioid overdose until Porton Down tests showed nerve agent poisoning https://briefnews.eu/uk-medics-treated-skripals-for-opioid-overdose-until-porton-down-tests-showed-nerve-agent-poisoning/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-medics-treated-skripals-for-opioid-overdose-until-porton-down-tests-showed-nerve-agent-poisoning/#respond Wed, 30 May 2018 03:28:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-medics-treated-skripals-for-opioid-overdose-until-porton-down-tests-showed-nerve-agent-poisoning/ The medical team at Sainsbury Hospital were treating the Skripals for opioid overdose without any extra precautions, until UK chemical weapon experts “confirmed” nerve agent poisoning and “advised” them on treatment, BBC reports.

Staff at Salisbury District Hospital say that former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, who were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury on March 4, were initially treated for opioid overdose, a new documentary reveals.

“The evening that Yulia and Sergei were admitted, at that point we were led to believe that they have taken an overdose, so there was no mention of nerve agent poisoning,” Sarah Clark, ward sister in charge of the shift on March 4, told BBC2’s Newsnight in an interview broadcast on Tuesday. “They were needing their support with their breathing and support with their cardiovascular system.”

Some initial reports on the Skripals indicated that emergency services suspected the powerful drug fentanyl may have been involved. The highly addictive synthetic opiate has been linked to a sharp increase in overdoses in the US and has also resulted in dozens of deaths across the UK.

The medical staff was apparently so sure of the drug overdose diagnosis that they did not even consider taking special precaution to protect themselves against potential exposure to the deadly military grade chemical agent, which they were soon convinced caused the ailment of the Skripals.

“At first, when they first came in, there was no indication of the fact that it was a nerve agent. And therefore, we take our normal protection when any patient comes in but would have not at that point taken any extra precaution in terms of protecting ourselves,” Clark said.

Things at the hospital began to slowly change when police told the medical staff on Monday morning that they were dealing with victims of a potential “targeted attack.” Dr. Duncan Murray, the hospital’s senior intensive care consultant, recalled how he discovered the identity of the Skripals at “six o’clock on a Monday morning,” while Cara Charles Barks, chief executive at the hospital, said that only by 10am was the case declared an “external incident.”

While the Skripals were first admitted to the hospital on Sunday evening, it was not until Tuesday that doctors realized they were seeing “symptoms typical of organophosphate” or nerve agent poisoning, the BBC investigation claims. This suspicion arose after Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, one of the officers who had attended the scene but whose fate was not part of the BBC report, was admitted with “similar” symptoms.

While some of the symptoms exhibited by the Skripals were consistent with World Health Organization guidelines for opioid poisoning, it was not until a helping hand was extended by experts from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) at Porton Down that the Salisbury medical team finally started treating the Skripals for nerve agent poisoning.

“Whilst a district general hospital laboratory cannot test specifically for a nerve agent, we are able to request tests for the effect of the nerve agent so we can measure anticholinesterase levels and see whether they have been affected. And it was our colleagues in Porton Down that helped us with the testing,” Medical Director Dr. Christine Blanshard said.

From that point on, doctors at Salisbury Hospital began to administer medical treatment, the details of which are kept secret due to medical “confidentiality” concerns. The hospital continued to receive advice from international experts, including the Porton Down chemical weapons research laboratory.

“Clinical decisions were ours, but we would be foolish not to take their advice, which we did. And I think that helped,” intensive care consultant Dr. Jukes noted. “When we began seeing some improvements, it happened a lot quicker than anticipated. Certainly, when you look at these groups of nerve agents, the expectations from the textbooks, the journals suggested a much longer period of recovery.”

Dr. Jukes, who did not initially believe the two would survive, said he was “exceptionally surprised” with the speed of their recovery. In fact, it happened so fast that he cannot easily explain it.

Dr. Murray of Salisbury District Hospital said their recovery is “attributable to the very good, generic, basic, critical care, excellent team care,” and not some magic pill, in addition to “some input from really, really well informed international experts, which very fortunate, some of who have happened to be on our doorstep at Porton Down.”

Medics may slow biological time to save soldiers’ lives https://briefnews.eu/medics-may-slow-biological-time-to-save-soldiers-lives/ https://briefnews.eu/medics-may-slow-biological-time-to-save-soldiers-lives/#respond Sun, 04 Mar 2018 22:55:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/medics-may-slow-biological-time-to-save-soldiers-lives/

Battlefield medics frequently only have a brief window of opportunity to treat an injury before it’s fatal or causes permanent disabilities, and it’s frequently so fleeting that there’s not much they can do. DARPA is exploring an unusual solution to that problem: slow the biological processes to give medics more room to breathe. Its new Biostasis research program aims to bring cell activity to a near halt by using biochemicals that control energetics at the protein level. If animals like tardigrades and wood frogs can stabilize their cells to survive freezing and dehydration, similar techniques might offer more time to medics who want to treat wounds before a victim’s vital systems break down.

DARPA knows this won’t be easy. The trick is to slow down every cellular process at roughly the same rate — you can’t just pause a few while others run at full speed. You’d also have to minimize any damage when the cells return to their normal function.

The Biostasis program is still very young (its first day for answering proposers’ questions is March 20th), and DARPA isn’t expecting too much even from complete projects: it’s initially focusing on “benchtop” proofs of concept and will focus on real-world uses as the program nears its 5-year end. If it has any success, though, the program could prove to be a breakthrough for the medical field as a whole, not just in combat. Paramedics could buy themselves enough time to get a patient to hospital, and doctors could focus less on basic survival and more on full recoveries.

At least three people are in critical condition after a gunman opened fire at an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, 10km from Jerusalem, medics say. Local media report the assailant was a Palestinian and the three wounded succumbed to their injuries.

The incident took place near Har Adar, northwest of Jerusalem, Magen David Adom (MDA), the Israeli national emergency service, said on Twitter.

Paramedics say they were treating four patients, three of whom were in critical condition.
The attacker was “neutralized” at the scene, MDA added.

Meningitis B warning – teenage girl died after medics ‘underestimated’ her illness https://briefnews.eu/meningitis-b-warning-teenage-girl-died-after-medics-underestimated-her-illness-2/ https://briefnews.eu/meningitis-b-warning-teenage-girl-died-after-medics-underestimated-her-illness-2/#respond Sat, 18 Mar 2017 15:32:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meningitis-b-warning-teenage-girl-died-after-medics-underestimated-her-illness-2/

Isabel Gentry, 16, died from meningitis B less than 48 hours after medics discharged her from hospital.

The teenager, known to friends as Izzy, was taken to Bristol Royal infirmary (BRI) in the early hours of May 18 last year after complaining of a headache, vomiting and fainting.

An inquest heard that she was discharged despite her mother warning medical staff that another pupil at her daughter’s college had recently contracted the disease.

Izzy’s condition deteriorated and she was re-admitted later that day with “typical” symptoms of the disease.

Tragically the teenager never recovered and died the following day.

The inquest also heard how a GP had failed to visit Izzy at her home when she first became unwell despite her mother requesting one.

Yesterday senior coroner for Avon, Maria Voisin, said there was an “underestimation” of Izzy’s illness.

She said there had been a “gross failure” in the medical treatment she received which contributed to her death.

Ms Voisin said she would be urging for the meningitis B vaccine to be rolled out to Izzy’s age group to prevent future deaths.

It has only been routinely given to new-born babies since 2015.

The coroner said a senior clinician rather than a junior doctor should inspect patients with possible meningitis.

Friends and family of the teenager cheered and sobbed as the coroner recorded a conclusion of natural cause of death contributed to by neglect.

Izzy’s mother Clare Booty, from Bristol, gave a statement outside the coroner’s court.

She said her “bright, beautiful daughter” should have been taken to the local children’s hospital due to her age, where the condition, which is prevalent in teenagers, may have been recognised.

Mrs Booty raised concerns about delays in ambulances taking her daughter to hospital and a lack of communication between different parts of the health service.

But her most scathing criticisms were for the hospital.

She said: “We know the BRI A&E did not give Izzy a thorough and logical assessment which we now know the coroner has concluded amounted to neglect.”

Referring to the way the hospital responded to Izzy’s death, Mrs Booty said: “We were advised a series of reviews would take place. Imagine our shock when within five days of Isabel’s death the hospital said they found her care was entirely appropriate.

“We remain unconvinced the BRI has the culture, the common sense, or the strength of character, to properly review any serious incidents.

“Their initial approach seemed to be damage limitation rather than saying ‘a 16-year old has died in our care, we must learn’.”

Isabel had planned to train as a midwife, but instead her story will be used in hospitals as a case study to be learnt from.

Dr Mark Callaway, deputy medical director for University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Isabel’s family and friends. Their grief is at the forefront of our minds as we re-examine the steps we have taken to prevent such a missed diagnosis happening again.

“We will carefully consider the recommendations the coroner has made today.

“We now use Isabel’s illness as a case study in training for our doctors to show how patients with devastating underlying conditions can have non-specific symptoms that make their illness extremely difficult to diagnose, and how severe illness in adultness can be masked for a period of time.

“In the light of what we have heard during Isabel’s inquest, we made a commitment yesterday to revise training for doctors taking patient histories, to ensure that the bigger diagnostic picture is not obscured by undue weight given to a single symptom.

“Our deep regret is that these measures did not ensure that we took steps to prevent Isabel’s illness from developing to the point where it could not be treated. Our commitment is to learn all we can from her very sad death.”

In a smilar incident, a two-year-old died after GPs diagnosed a chest infection.
