The drug, Epidiolex, is made from cannabidol, or CBD, a component of marijuana known for its muscle-relaxing and pain-relieving properties. Administered as a thick oil, CBD was found in clinical trials to drastically reduce seizures in patients suffering from Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut syndromes.

Unlike THC, cannabis’ other active component, CBD does not induce a high. Before Epidiolex can be brought to the market, however, the FDA will have to reclassify CBD, which is currently listed as a Schedule 1 drug alongside cocaine, heroin and LSD.

While Epidiolex will only be available to people suffering from two rare conditions, the approval represents a step forward for medical marijuana research, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a statement. The FDA has previously approved synthetic versions of THC to treat nausea in chemotherapy patients, but has never approved any medication directly extracted from the cannabis plant.

“This is an important medical advance,” Gottlieb said. “And, the FDA is committed to this kind of careful scientific research and drug development.”

Marijuana is currently legal for medicinal use in 30 US states, and legal for recreational use in eight of those states. Some states have more stringent definitions of ‘medicinal marijuana’ however. Louisiana, for example, only allows patients to consume cannabis-based medicine in oil or pill form, while other states limit medicinal marijuana to patients suffering from a select few rare illnesses.

The FDA’s approval of Epidiolex is therefore a significant step towards guaranteeing access to cannabis-based treatment for patients across the country. Under the current system, people looking to treat their own or their children’s illnesses with CBD have had to move to states where the compound is legal. Without regulation, they risk inconsistent quality, inaccurate dosing, and uncertainty of supply.

Dravet syndrome appears early in children and causes frequent seizures, hyperactivity, and impaired motor skills. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome also begins in childhood and causes multiple types of uncontrollable seizures. An estimated one in five patients with either condition die before the age of 20.

Activists claim that CBD can be used to treat a long list of ailments, including AIDS, cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, schizophrenia, arthritis, and strokes. The FDA has taken a dim view of these claims, and has promised to take legal action against companies marketing unregulated CBD products to treat serious illnesses.

“We’re especially concerned when these products are marketed for serious or life threatening diseases, where the illegal promotion of an unproven compound could discourage a patient from seeking other therapies that have proven benefits,” said Gottlieb.

While the US takes tentative steps towards legalization, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last week that recreational marijuana use and cultivation will be fully legalized from October this year, lifting a 95-year ban.

Canada will become the first Western country to fully legalize pot on a nationwide level. The only other country in the world to do so was Uruguay, in July last year.

Tourists travelling abroad who need medication may be breaking the law, even if it is prescribed.

Common medicine that can be bought over the counter, even flu medication or cold tablets could fall foul of the rules.

A number of tourists travelling to popular holiday destinations such as Dubai and Egypt have found themselves in trouble with government authorities due to a lack of awareness of the laws.

Kate Taylor, a pharmacist at LloydsPharmacy, spoke to Express.co.uk about certain countries that could confuse travellers.

Checking the ingredients is something that should always be done before packing any medication.

Japan: Anti-stimulant drugs banned

A number of anti-cold or flu tablets that can be bought over the counter are strictly prohibited in Japan.

This can include inhalers or allergy medicine also.

Anything containing Pseudoephedrine or codeine are included in the ban which are found in most medications.

Ms Taylor warns that some foreign nationals “have been detained and deported for offences”.

She advises checking with the Japanese Embassy regarding medication. before travelling to check that they are not banned.

UAE and Greece: Controlled drugs with strict rules

Drugs containing tramadol, codeine and Diazepam are “controlled drugs” when entering the UAE or Greece.

These have certain restrictions before they are allowed to be taken into the country, which will need to be met.

If they are not complied with, travellers can be arrested or fined.

Indonesia: Prescription drugs banned

Tourists may not realise that even if the medication is prescribed by a doctor with a note, they may not be allowed into the country.

In Indonesia, a number of medications are not allowed in no matter what.

Treatments for symptoms such as ADHD or sleeping tablets are strictly banned, along with anything containing codeine.

China: Certain medicines not available

Travellers heading to China will face difficulty finding certain medicines if they require them.

While there aren’t many drugs that are banned to be taken into the country, some are not available to be bought.

Tourists who need certain medicines should make sure to have a big enough supply when visiting the country.

A doctors note will be needed when carrying it into the country, as well as checking with the China embassy beforehand.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued the newest advice regarding prescription drugs.

Indigestion can be pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen or burning pain behind the breastbone. It usually occurs after eating or drinking.

Also known as dyspepsia, its symptoms can include heartburn, feeling full an bloated, feeling sick, belching and passing wind, and bringing up food or bitter tasting fluids – better known as acid reflux.

While reaching for the medicine cabinet may be your first port of call, you should avoid taking a particular medication.

The NHS advises to avoid taking ibuprofen or aspirin as this can make indigestion worse.

There’s usually no need to see your GP about indigestion, and the health body recommends a number of things you can do at home.

You should cut down on tea coffee, cola or alcohol, prop your head and shoulders up in bed – this can stop stomach acid coming up while you sleep, and lose weight if you’re overweight.

As well as avoiding taking ibuprofen or aspirin, you shouldn’t eat three to four hours before going to bed, have rich, spicy or fatty foods, or smoke.

Other causes of indigestion include medicines, smoking and alcohol.

If the problem becomes a recurring thing, you should see a GP.

Other circumstances which may require the help of a doctor are if you’re in bad pain, if you’re 55 or older, have lost a lot of weight without meaning to, have difficulty swallowing, or keep vomiting.

If you have iron deficiency anaemia and indigestion, feel like you have a lump in your stomach, or have bloody vomit or poo, you should also see your GP.

If you experience stomach ache or pain, it may not be indigestion, but constipation.

Constipation is a common condition where there is difficulty emptying the bowels.

The most common causes are not eating enough fibre, not drinking enough fluids and ignoring the urge to go to the toilet.

The first thing to do if you’re constipated is to eat plenty of fibre, says Bupa.

Its website states: “Fibre is in all types of fruit and vegetables, so aim to eat at least five portions of these a day.”

Other good sources of fibre it lists include wholegrain cereals, wholemeal bread, brown rice, rolled oats or oat bran, seeds, such as flax seeds, and pulses, such as peas and beans.

The health organisation adds: “If you don’t currently eat much fibre, increase the amount in your diet slowly, otherwise you may feel bloated an pass wind. Stick with a high-fibre diet even if your symptoms don’t immediately improve, as it can take up to a month to have an effect.

“You might also find it helps to include a naturally-occurring sugar called sorbitol in your diet. This draws water into your bowel, which can soften your poo. Sorbitol is in lots of suits including apples, apricots, grapes, plums and strawberries. Dried fruit, such as prunes, contains more sorbitol than fresh fruit.

“It’s also important to drink plenty of fluids, but not those that contain caffeine, or alcohol. Aim to drink between eight and 10 cups a day (about two litres).”

Exercising more may also help ease constipation.
