Time for yet another original from Netflix. The Mechanism (or O Mecanismo) hails from Narcos executive producer José Padilha and is inspired by a true story about events in Brazil that launched the biggest corruption scandal of all time. Watch The Mechanism trailer below.

Netflix recently announced they plan on releasing a whopping total of 700 original movies and TV shows this year alone. That may seem like an almost impossible number, but every other day now, a new Netflix original trailer will appear. Here’s the latest: The Mechanism, a new series from José Padilha (Narcos, Elite Squad 1 & 2, the RoboCop remake) and screenwriter Elena Soarez (Filhos do Carnaval, Eu tu Eles, Casa de Areia). The series is based on a shocking true story, and the Mechanism trailer looks intense. Check it out.

The Mechanism Trailer

Per Netflix’s press site, “The series stars Selton Mello (Ligações Perigosas, Meu Nome Não é Johnny, O Palhaço) as Marco Ruffo, a retired federal police deputy obsessed with the case at hand; Caroline Abras (Avenida Brasil, Se nada mais der certo, Perto de qualquer lugar) as Verena Cardoni, Ruffo’s gutsy mentee; and Enrique Diaz (Justiça, Felizes para Sempre?) as Roberto Ibrahim, an outlaw who lies at the heart of Ruffo’s obsession.”

Other cast members include Lee Taylor (A pedra do reino; Velho chico, Riocorrente), Antonio Saboia (A wolf at the door; Fora da lei), Jonathan Haagensen (City of God, Noel, poeta da vila), Alessandra Colasanti (A verdadeira história da bailarina de vermelho), Leonardo Medeiros (Cabra-cega, Onde quer que você esteja), Otto Jr. (Malhação, The Silver Cliff), Susana Ribeiro (O Dono do Mundo, Meu Bem Querer) and Osvaldo Mil (A Máquina, Preamar).

The case that inspired the show started off as a simple money laundering investigation, and then ballooned into something much, much larger, blowing the lid off of massive corruption at a state-controlled oil company. Per The Inverse, the real-life scandal that inspired the show involved a money laundering operation that ran “something to the tune of $ 9.5 billion USD to date amongst the many operations. The network for doing so was damn near impenetrable, especially considering it involved an intricate network of high-profile politicians and corporate businessmen.”

The Mechanism hits Netflix on March 23, 2018.

From acclaimed director José Padilha (Narcos, Elite Squad 1 & 2, RoboCop) and prolific screenwriter Elena Soarez (Filhos do Carnaval, Eu tu Eles, Casa de Areia) comes THE MECHANISM, a fictionalized crime drama inspired by real events in Brazil that propelled the biggest corruption scandal of all time.

A thrilling, character-driven original series, THE MECHANISM explores how a small group of dogged investigators comes to discover the inner workings of a monstrous corruption scheme and the impact their pursuit has on everyone involved – including themselves.

US rejects Moscow-proposed UN mechanism to probe Syria chemical attacks based on facts https://briefnews.eu/us-rejects-moscow-proposed-un-mechanism-to-probe-syria-chemical-attacks-based-on-facts/ https://briefnews.eu/us-rejects-moscow-proposed-un-mechanism-to-probe-syria-chemical-attacks-based-on-facts/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 23:16:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-rejects-moscow-proposed-un-mechanism-to-probe-syria-chemical-attacks-based-on-facts/ The US has firmly rejected a Russian-drafted Security Council resolution seeking to establish an objective investigative mechanism to probe all allegations of chemical attacks in Syria “based on impeccable and irrefutable data.”

“We want to rise above the differences and propose [the] creation of a new international investigative body,” tasked with establishing facts and seeking those responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria “based on the impeccable and irrefutable data obtained in a transparent and credible way,” Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia told the Security Council on Tuesday.

The mandate of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) expired in November following a number of failed attempts by the UNSC to extend its authority. Moscow has repeatedly criticized JIM’s handling of the investigation of chemical attacks in Syria, including the April incident in Khan Shaykhun in Idlib province.

Moscow believes that JIM’s investigations were full of “systemic deficiencies” and speculations, lacked hard evidence, while its conclusions were often drawn from statements made by questionable sources. The main point of contention is that the team did not honor the basic chain-of-custody principle, which required OPCW to obtain on-site biomedical and environmental samples.

The United Nations Security Council meeting was called by Russia to discuss the situation in Syria, including fresh accusations against the Syrian government over an alleged chemical attack in a Damascus suburb.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, however, fervently rejected the Russian proposal, shifting gears to accuse Moscow of trying to shield Bashar Assad from the alleged crimes the US continues to pin on him not bothering to back it with evidence.

“When Russia doesn’t like the facts, they try and distract the conversation. That’s because the facts come back over and over again to the truth Russia wants to hide – that the Assad regime continues to use chemical weapons against its own people,” Haley told the Security Council.

“The United States and the international community are not going to be fooled. We remain steadfast in pursuing accountability for those who use chemical weapons,” she said before leaving the meeting.

The immediate and passionate rejection of Moscow’s initiative is quite telling and proves that the establishment of a professional and independent investigative mechanism is the last thing Washington would like to see, Nebenzia noted.

“The fact that our resolution was outright dismissed says volumes. This once again reveals the truth, that we sadly already know. The United States of America does not need an independent, professional mechanism. Not only that you reveal the truth, but you show your true colors in front of the international community.”

Earlier on Tuesday during an international conference in Paris, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson blamed the Syrian government for the alleged chemical incident in East Ghouta. Just ahead of the ‘International Partnership against Impunity for the Use of Chemical Weapons’ 24-nation meeting, reports surfaced of a possible chlorine gas attack on Monday, in which more than 20 civilians were allegedly injured. The reports have been produced by controversial pro-militant sources, namely the White Helmets and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), and have not yet been independently verified.

The lack of evidence did not stop the top US diplomat directly accusing Russia of allowing chemical weapons-related incidents in Syria. “Whoever conducted the attacks Russia ultimately bears responsibility for the victims in eastern Ghouta and countless other Syrians targeted with chemical weapons since Russia became involved in Syria,” he stated.

Director Jose Padilha may not be a household name yet, but action movie junkies will recognize him as the filmmaker behind Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, and Netflix aficionados may recall that he a director and producer of the streaming service’s true life cartel show, Narcos.

Now Netflix has teamed with Padilha for an intense new crime drama in the vein of Narcos called The Mechanism, which tells a fictionalized version of “the biggest corruption story of all time.”

The Mechanism trailer

Padilha is a Brazilian who has a deep passion for his home country, and you can feel it in almost everything he makes. He fights against corruption by telling stories about it, and the work he did in the Elite Squad movies – a pair of down and dirty, gritty little low budget thrillers that don’t pull any punches – seems to have informed his approach to practically every project he’s taken since then. The Mechanism looks very similar to Narcos – maybe too similar – but it’s covering thematic territory that’s consistent with Padilha’s overall career trajectory.

Whether that translates into a show that’s worth watching remains to be seen. I interviewed him a few years ago when he directed the remake of RoboCop, and even though that movie wasn’t very good, he struck me as an incredibly smart guy with plenty to say. Here’s hoping some of those ideas come through here amid the stylized depiction of illegal activities.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The Mechanism is a thrilling, character-driven original series inspired by real events in Brazil. This fictionalized story explores how a small group of dogged investigators comes to discover the inner workings of a monstrous corruption scheme and the impact their pursuit has on everyone involved – including themselves.

Padilha and Elena Soarez co-created The Mechanism, and Soarez wrote the scripts with Sofia Maldonado. The series stars Selton Mello (Ligações Perigosas, Meu Nome Não é Johnny) as Marco Ruffo, a retired federal police deputy obsessed with the case at hand; Carol Abras (Avenida Brasil, Se nada mais der certo) as Verena Cardoni, Ruffo’s gutsy mentee; and Enrique Diaz (Justiça, Felizes para Sempre?) as Roberto Ibrahim, an outlaw who lies at the heart of Ruffo’s obsession. The cast also includes Lee Taylor, Antonio Saboia, Jonathan Haagensen, Alessandra Colasanti, Leonardo Medeiros, Otto Jr., Susana Ribeiro, and Osvaldo Mil.

The Mechanism premieres on Netflix on Friday, March 23, 2018.

The joint mechanism of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for investigating chemical attacks in Syria has formally ended its activities. On Friday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a new resolution on the extension of the UN-OPCW Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM). Russia and Bolivia voted against Japan’s new draft. The JIM has been probing alleged chemical weapons attacks in Syria, including the April incident in Idlib province, which killed up to 100 people. The JIM’s reports have been backing Washington’s evidence-free accusations against the government of Syrian leader Bashar Assad. Russia has repeatedly criticized the JIM mission for relying on unverifiable testimonies of unidentified individuals, and failing to investigate the site of the attack itself in the first place. The Russian ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said on Friday that the JIM has covered itself with shame by putting forward groundless charges against Damascus. He said Moscow vetoed the Japanese draft resolution on a technical prolongation of the JIM mandate for 30 days, as it could not accept the continued performance of the commission in its current manner.

BRICS countries considering own cryptocurrency as settlement mechanism https://briefnews.eu/brics-countries-considering-own-cryptocurrency-as-settlement-mechanism/ https://briefnews.eu/brics-countries-considering-own-cryptocurrency-as-settlement-mechanism/#respond Mon, 04 Sep 2017 14:16:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brics-countries-considering-own-cryptocurrency-as-settlement-mechanism/

The BRICS Finance Committee is discussing a joint virtual currency for the five nation bloc of developing economies, according to the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) chief Kirill Dmitriev.

During the BRICS Summit in Xiamen, Dmitriev told journalists that Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa could develop its own alternative to other payment tools.

“While there is a focus on settlements in national currencies, cryptocurrencies are also being discussed as one of the possible settlement mechanisms,” Dmitriev explained.

He added that within BRICS cryptocurrencies could replace the US dollar and other currencies used in settlements among the member states.

The BRICS countries have considered switching to local currencies for mutual settlements with the Chinese yuan as the lead currency. The New Development Bank (NDB) is expected to be a substantial player in the process.

“The use of local currencies will help promote mutually beneficial economic cooperation, mitigate currency risks, increase trade, and facilitate companies in accessing the BRICS markets,” said Russia’s Vnesheconombank board member Nikolay Tsekhomsky.

Last week, five banks of the BRICS Interbank Cooperation Mechanism agreed to establish local currency credit lines.

The head of NDB Kundapur Vaman Kamath said the bank aims to lend around $ 4 billion next year and also plans to start lending to private sector projects.

At a meeting with BRICS corporate leaders, Kamath said he hoped they would be able to take loans in local currencies as part of the bank’s initial wish to “break away from the tyranny of hard currencies.”

Washington and Beijing set up military dialogue mechanism to reduce ‘risk of miscalculations’ https://briefnews.eu/washington-and-beijing-set-up-military-dialogue-mechanism-to-reduce-risk-of-miscalculations/ https://briefnews.eu/washington-and-beijing-set-up-military-dialogue-mechanism-to-reduce-risk-of-miscalculations/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2017 01:45:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/washington-and-beijing-set-up-military-dialogue-mechanism-to-reduce-risk-of-miscalculations/ The United States and China have agreed to enhance their direct military communication line in order to reduce chances of any “miscalculations” amid the Korean peninsula crisis and other standing issues between Washington and Beijing.

The joint strategic dialogue mechanism agreement was signed Tuesday between Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his counterpart Gen. Fang Fenghui of the Chinese army.

The agreement is designed to handle crisis mitigation and provides a “direct communication” channel between the Pentagon’s top leadership and the Chinese military. Such a channel will “enable us to communicate to reduce the risk of miscalculation,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

The agreement also envisions face-face dialogue between the militaries, the first of which is scheduled for November.

‘Don’t shift responsibility’: China says pressuring N. Korea isn’t solely up to Beijing

“These communications are especially crucial now, as the region and the world are facing the dangers of a nuclear-armed North Korea,” Pentagon officials said, according to the statement.

Tensions in the Korean peninsula is one of many points of contention between the two countries. Beijing has long been frustrated by Washington’s assertions that China is the one country that must do more to tackle the issue of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. Beijing has also been irritated over the US decision to use the issue as a pretext for deploying the advanced THAAD missile defense system in South Korea.

Russia, China: N. Korea must freeze nuclear activities, US halt THAAD deployment

In addition, China has repeatedly called out the US for exacerbating tensions on its borders through beefing up its military capabilities and intensifying their so-called freedom of navigation patrols in the South and East China Seas.

At the same time, Beijing continues to be suspicious of Washington’s policy toward Taiwan, which China considers an inherent part of China.

During the meeting, Fang said both military leaders discussed North Korea, Taiwan and the South China Sea. Fang further noted that cooperation between the two militaries was the only correct choice for the two countries, according to Reuters.

The new agreement offers hope that any existing tensions between the two countries do not escalate into a military confrontation.

“The military-to-military contacts between the United States and China are important because there will always be some friction between the two countries,” Dunford noted during the meeting in Beijing.

The US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff reiterated that military contacts between the two Pacific powers “will lessen the chances of a miscalculation.”

“The Chinese military is willing to make efforts with the US side to strengthen strategic communication, increase strategic mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, appropriately handle problems and disputes and effectively manage and control risks,” the Chinese defense ministry said, as quoted by Reuters.

Insomnia may actually be an age-old survival mechanism wired from generations https://briefnews.eu/insomnia-may-actually-be-an-age-old-survival-mechanism-wired-from-generations-2/ https://briefnews.eu/insomnia-may-actually-be-an-age-old-survival-mechanism-wired-from-generations-2/#respond Wed, 12 Jul 2017 00:51:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/insomnia-may-actually-be-an-age-old-survival-mechanism-wired-from-generations-2/

Varying sleep patterns among people of different ages evolved to protect against danger lurking in the shadows, they claim.

For our ancestors who lived and slept in groups thousands of years ago, it paid to ensure that not everyone was deeply asleep while predators lurked in the shadows.

It could be one reason why people tend to experience more restless nights as they get older.

Dr David Samson, one of the researchers from Duke University in North Carolina, said: “The idea that there’s a benefit to living with grandparents has been around for a while, but this study extends that idea to vigilance during night-time sleep.”

The scientists, who call their theory the “poorly sleeping grandparent hypothesis”, carried out a study of the Hadza people, a traditional hunter-gatherer community in Tanzania.

The Hadza exist as humans did for hundreds of thousands of years before the advent of farming.

Typically they live and sleep in groups of 20-30 people.

During the day, men and women go their separate ways to hunt or forage for tubers and berries in the savannah woodlands.

At night, young and old alike sleep together out in the open or in huts made of woven grass and branches.

But not everyone slept at the same time, the researchers found. Older group members in their 50s and 60s generally went to bed earlier and woke up earlier than those in their 20s and 30s.

As a result, it was rare for the whole group to be sleeping at once.

Out of more than 220 hours of observation, the scientists identified only 18 minutes when all the group’s adults were sound asleep at the same time.

On average, more than a third of the group was alert, or dozing very lightly, at any given time.

The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, may help explain why the Hadza generally do not post night-time sentinels. They do not need to, say the researchers.

Co-author Professor Charlie Nunn, an expert in evolutionary anthropology at Duke University, said: “Any time you have a mixed-age group population, some go to bed early, some later. If you’re older you’re more of a morning lark.

“If you’re younger you’re more of a night owl.

“A lot of older people go to doctors complaining that they wake up early and can’t get back to sleep. But maybe there’s nothing wrong with them.

“Maybe some of the medical issues we have today could be explained not as disorders, but as a relic of an evolutionary past in which they were beneficial.”

Defense Mechanism: How Does Your Body React To Things That Do Not Happen As You Wish https://briefnews.eu/defense-mechanism-how-does-your-body-react-to-things-that-do-not-happen-as-you-wish/ https://briefnews.eu/defense-mechanism-how-does-your-body-react-to-things-that-do-not-happen-as-you-wish/#respond Tue, 06 Jun 2017 02:26:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/defense-mechanism-how-does-your-body-react-to-things-that-do-not-happen-as-you-wish/

According to Sigmund Freud in the psychoanalytic theory, a defense mechanism is a tactic developed by the ego against anxiety.[1] Security mechanisms are thought to guard the mind against feelings and thoughts that are too difficult for the conscious mind to cope with.

Also, Wikipedia defines a defense mechanism as an unconscious emotional mechanism that reduces stress as a result of unacceptable or potentially damaging stimuli.[2] Sigmund Freud was one of the first proponents of this construct. However, defense mechanisms may bring about healthy or unhealthy consequences with regards to the circumstances and frequency in which the device is used.

While all these mechanisms can be harmful, they can also be very useful and allows us to function normally. The greatest problems occur when defense mechanisms are overused to avoid dealing with problems.

You might have perhaps heard people speak about immunity processors with which we protect ourselves from things that people no longer want to think about or deal with. The term got its start in psychoanalytic therapy, but it has slowly proved helpful in day-to-day language. Think of the last time you referenced to someone as being “in denial” or alleged someone of “rationalizing”. Both of these illustrations label a type of defense mechanism.

I want to analyze below each type of defense mechanism as well as other immunity processes defined by psychologists.

Displacement: express the anger towards other people that are less threatening

Displacement defense mechanism involves getting feelings, frustrations, and impulses on people or objects that are less threatening. Displaced aggression is a common sort of this defense mechanism. Rather than express our angriness in manners that could lead to negative effects (like arguing with the boss), we instead express our anger towards a person or object that position’s no threat (such as our spouse, children, or pets).

For example, this frequently occurs with family members, where we often see the father getting angry at the mother. The mother then takes her anger to her kid, the son in change yells at his little sister, the little sis kicks the dog, and your dog bites the kitten.

Sublimation: transform unhelpful emotions into healthy actions

This is a mechanism that makes us act away unacceptable impulses by changing our characters to generally accepted ones. For example, a person experiencing extreme anger might take up kickboxing as a means of venting disappointment. It is also assumed that in no doubt sublimation is seen as a sign of maturity that enables individuals to function normally in the society.

Repression: keep the unwanted information out of one’s awareness

This is another well-known defense mechanism. It acts to keep information out of our conscious awareness. It even consists all the others, and it is possibly the oddest of them all. Though, these memories don’t just disappear; they continue to influence our behavior. Often, we do this intentionally by forcing the unwanted information out of our awareness, which is known as suppression.

Rationalization: make excuses to rationalize irrational behavior

This is another mechanism which describes the unpleasant characters or feeling in a logical manner. This mechanism does not only inhibit anxiety, but it may also protect self-esteem and self-concept. It is something that each human being does, probably on a regular basis. An example is a person who is turned down for a date and might rationalize the situation by saying they were not attracted to this person anyway. Another example of this may be a mate stealing money from a wealthy friend of his, telling himself “Well this individual is rich, he can afford to lose it.”

Projection: attribute one’s own thoughts and emotions to another

Discharge is defined as “Attributing one’s thoughts, emotions, or motives to another”. Projection is well known as the mechanism that takes unacceptable characteristics and changes them to others. This kind of feature is common, and we have probably all experienced it. An angry man might accuse others of being hostile. For example, if you have an intense hatred for someone, you might instead believe he or she does not like you.

Intellectualization: focus only on the intellectual aspect and remain isolated from the reality

Intellectualization works to minimize anxiety by thinking about events in a cold, clinical way. This defense mechanism enables us to avoid considering the stressful, mental aspect of the situation and instead focus only on the intellectual aspect. For example, a person who has just been clinically diagnosed with a terminal disease might give attention to learning everything about the disease to avoid distress and remain isolated from the reality of the specific situation.

Reaction Formation: behave completely contrary to how one feels

Result creation reduces anxiety by taking up the opposite sense, impulse or behavior. It is also one of the defense mechanisms, as it entails behaving completely contrary to how one feels. It is defined as acting in a way that is exactly the opposite of your true feelings. An example of this could be treating an individual you hate in an excessively friendly manner to hide your true feelings.

These analyses show how we react to different emotions or characters. Though there are some things, we see wrong but seem good. While defense mechanism is usually thought of as negative reactions, many of these defense mechanisms can be helpful. For example, utilizing joy to overcome an annoying, anxiety-provoking situation can be an adaptive protection mechanism. In other circumstances, they allow people to temporarily ease stress during critical times, letting them give attention to what is necessary at the moment.

Laughing as the World Burns: Humor as a Coping Mechanism on ‘The Leftovers’ https://briefnews.eu/laughing-as-the-world-burns-humor-as-a-coping-mechanism-on-the-leftovers/ https://briefnews.eu/laughing-as-the-world-burns-humor-as-a-coping-mechanism-on-the-leftovers/#respond Wed, 10 May 2017 16:11:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/laughing-as-the-world-burns-humor-as-a-coping-mechanism-on-the-leftovers/ With every season, The Leftovers gets weirder and weirder. But at the same time, paradoxically, it’s become a lot more relatable, burrowing into the bizarre to find a kernel of truth about human behavior in the face of irreconcilable grief. This season, we’ve seen a group of frat bros worship a giant balloon in the shape of Gary Busey; a man who’s convinced that dogs have disguised themselves as humans and infiltrated the highest levels of government; and Mark Linn-Baker, the star of the ’80s sitcom Perfect Strangers, who tells a stunned Nora (Carrie Coon) about a mechanism created by Swedish physicists that allegedly blasts people with enough radioactive waves to send them wherever their loved ones — the two percent of the world’s population who disappeared during a rapture-like event on October 14, 2011 — have gone.

The Leftovers is a drama, and a heavy one at that; it is, after all, a show about the end of the world. But it’s also consistently funny, and in its third season in particular, it uses humor in ways that feel very true to life. Like Mad Men — another Serious Drama that never got enough credit for its wicked sense of humor — The Leftovers is funny in that absurd, spontaneous way that life can be funny. It understands that people use humor as a shield and that, particularly in times of turmoil, there’s often not much daylight between a laugh and a sob.

The whole plot of Season 3 is hysterical, if you forget about the human grief and desperation at the heart of it. Take the third episode. Kevin Garvey Sr. (Scott Glenn), the father of police chief Kevin Garvey Jr. (Justin Theroux), has traveled across Australia to find Christopher Sunday (David Gulpilil), an Aboriginal clever man who Kevin is certain can provide the missing piece of his plan to stave off the End of the World. As the seven-year anniversary of the Sudden Departure looms, Kevin Sr. is sure he’s figured out the solution: Stop the inevitable Great Flood by learning and singing sacred Aboriginal songs. He’s just one song away from completing his mission, and Christopher Sunday is the man to teach it to him. Is Kevin Sr. crazy, or he is a prophet? Is his mission pathetic or inspired? One thing’s certain — it’s pretty freaking hilarious.

Here’s how Kevin Sr. came to his conclusion: After the Sudden Departure, he started hearing voices in his head and was committed to a mental institution. Eventually, he decided to listen to the voices, which told him to go to Australia. There, he headed for the Sydney Opera House, but on his way was stopped by a hippie who asked if he wanted to hear the voice of god. “So I said, ‘Fuck yeah, I want to talk to god!’” He was given a hallucinogenic drug, and woke up weeks later in a hotel room in Perth. On the TV was a chicken, Tony, which had hatched from an egg that was the only living thing in its small village to survive the Sudden Departure. Naturally, Kevin hopped on a train and went to see the chicken, which began pecking at a cassette tape in Kevin’s backpack that he’s been carrying around since 1981, when he and Kevin Jr. took a road trip to Niagara Falls and recorded their meandering conversations.

And what was the tape cued up to at the time? Kevin Sr. singing “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” to soothe his son during a rainstorm. After one verse, the rain stops. Clearly, Kevin concludes, this is what he must do: Sing away the Great Flood with Aboriginal folk songs. No matter that Christopher informs him the songs are meant to end drought, not rain. Kevin is convinced.

In the world of The Leftovers, everyone’s got a pet conspiracy theory — and most of them are hilarious. “Four series regulars,” Linn-Baker tells Nora, referring to his departed Perfect Strangers costars. “Three go, one stays: Me. You know what the odds of that are?” Of course, Nora — who lost her two children and her husband in the Sudden Departure — knows exactly what the odds are. It’s a funny line, but because of Nora’s history, it also carries the weight her grief.

Titled “Don’t Be Ridiculous,” the Mark Linn-Baker episode, the season’s second, is when we really start to see the cracks in Nora’s cool façade. In the Season 3 opener, she and Kevin Jr., her boyfriend, are casually dismissive of those who believe the seventh anniversary of the Sudden Departure spells the end of the world, making a joke of their blind faith. Nora is an investigator for the Department of Sudden Departure (DSD), which means she’s a professional skeptic, drily pointing out to a woman who claims her husband just departed that he actually had a heart attack. There are witnesses. She seems to delight in deflating people’s hopes; it’s hard to imagine the woman she was before her family disappeared, before their absence hollowed her out and rendered the very concept of faith repugnant.

Both Kevin and Nora seem, at first, like the sanest, most level-headed people in their town of Jarden, Texas. But it quickly becomes clear that all is not well: Kevin has taken to suffocating himself with a plastic dry-cleaning bag and a roll of duct tape, although when Nora catches him, he insists he always rips it off; Nora, who used to hire sex workers to shoot her in the chest while she wore a bulletproof vest, sports a cast at the beginning of the season. Her doctor tells her one of his colleagues saw her slam her own arm in her car door in the parking lot.

While some people, like Nora’s preacher brother, Matt (Christopher Eccleston), dig deep into spirituality to cope with the chaotic aftermath of the Sudden Departure and its looming anniversary, Nora and Kevin use humor to refract their pain. In Sunday’s episode, “G’Day Melbourne,” Kevin accompanies Nora to Australia, where she’s supposedly going to investigate the Swedish physicists and their radioactive machine — which she tells her bosses and her boyfriend is clearly a scam. When Kevin asks why she has to make the trip, Nora deadpans, “The DSD has their hands full with the coming apocalypse.” But the viewer sees the truth in her madly hopeful eyes: She will do anything to see her children again, even if — perhaps especially if — it means risking her life.

There’s been a lot of chatter in the past few months about how scarily relatable certain TV shows and films are in light of Trump’s presidency. The Handmaid’s Tale is a frightening fable about a future in which women’s reproductive rights are totally stripped away; Get Out is a razor-sharp mediation on the myth of post-racial America; The Americans is suddenly all too real in its depiction of Cold War-era Russian spies infiltrating the U.S.

But of all the ways in which pop culture is reflecting the mood of the country post-inauguration, intentionally or not, The Leftovers feels the most relevant. Not in its politics; the show is pretty much a-political. But creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, who wrote the book on which the series is based, understand the often counterintuitive ways people react to the unthinkable. In a world saturated with irony and soaked in pop-culture references, it’s far too on-the-nose to feel your actual feelings; instead, you deflect. You make jokes. Why do you think SNL is enjoying its best ratings in over twenty years? It’s not because of the biting wit.

No, we laugh because we’re afraid, and because it’s more socially acceptable than screaming. It’s funny that there’s a guy who thinks dogs have infiltrated the federal government, but it’s also kind of terrifying. It’s funny when Mark Linn-Baker starts babbling about Low-Amplitude Denzinger Radiation, until we realize he’s dead serious. At this particular moment — when a woman is facing jail time for laughing at Jeff Sessions and the FCC is investigating Stephen Colbert over a dick joke — we know a little something about that feeling.

The Leftovers airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
