A viable philosophy or government propaganda? Bhutan is often praised for measuring its worth by citizens’ happiness alongside its economy, but can a country really calculate happiness—and if so, how?

I’m meandering along the world’s friendliest road. Hand-painted boulders remind drivers to “peep peep, don’t sleep,” and, a few hundred meters later, “mountain of pleasure, if you drive with leisure.” And instead of saying ‘back off’, the bumper sticker of the truck in front of us politely reads: “Don’t kiss me.”

Bhutan is famously the only country in the world to rank Gyalyong Gakid Palzom, or Gross National Happiness (GNH), above GDP. Everything—from governance and economic development to cultural preservation and environmental conservation—is decided according to this holistic tenet, designed to measure and protect the collective happiness and wellbeing of the population. When the UN General Assembly passed the resolution in 2011, it praised Bhutan and urged other members to follow suit.

But how does a country measure happiness and what’s it like to live that philosophy?

‘Gifted’ to the people by former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck in 2008, the philosophy, unique to the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is put into practice using a 30-page questionnaire that delves into the nine domains that are believed to contribute to a person’s happiness —psychological wellbeing, health, education, time use, cultural diversity and resilience, good governance, community vitality, ecological diversity, and resilience and living standards.

Participants are asked questions, such as: How often do you recite prayers or meditate? How satisfied are you with the relationship you have with your immediate family members? How many people close to you can you count on if sick, or if having financial problems? And how free do you feel to express your ideas and opinions?

The Bhutanese government argues the philosophy acts as ‘a compass towards a just and harmonious society’ and the questionnaire identifies gaps in happiness—such as that men tend to be happier than women, and urban, educated residents tend to be happier than rural citizens—and where they can improve amenities to re-address the balance. Ironically, though, Bhutan ranked 97 out of 156 on the 2018 World Happiness Report although they attribute this to the survey measuring happiness only via material wealth.

I ask my guide, Sonam Pelden, what he thinks as we join the thrum of locals circling like honeybees around the Memorial Stupa in Thimphu, built in 1974 in remembrance of Bhutan’s third king. The elder generation are dropped off by their kids with a packed lunch and spend the day here, spinning the prayer wheels and touching their prayer beads. “It becomes a community which makes them happy,” says Sonam.

In many ways, GNH seems a natural extension of the Mahayana Buddhism that 75 per cent of the population follows. “In my opinion, GNH means being satisfied with what you have,” Sonam says.

I’d noticed the large camera resting on the back seat of the car he used for his birdwatching. “But you still want the latest camera and new lens,” I tease.

“Good point,” he says, laughing, “but that’s because we’re human—it’s the human condition to never be satisfied. The goal is to try and be satisfied.”

After a few paces, he adds: “Sadness will always be there, so GNH helps keep the balance. Perhaps GNH is better defined as ‘development with values’.”

I ask Sonam how happy he thinks his fellow countrymen are. “I’d say about 85 per cent,” he replied. While that may be somewhat optimistic, the ‘unhappy’ 15 per cent is likely to include Nepalese inhabitants.

In the 1990s, around 100,000 Hindu Nepalese—about 28 per cent of the population—were forcibly expelled from Bhutan after pushback over the 1989 royal decree made it mandatory to wear the national costume. For men, that means the knee-length gho (robe), and the sari-style kira (skirt) and tego (jacket) for women. (Today, it’s only compulsory in schools, monasteries, and government offices). Nepalese-led attacks resulted in the deaths of some officials and King Jigme Singye Wangchuck authorized an anti-immigrant drive.

It demonstrated the near-absolute power the king wields and overall, this raises issues of freedom of expression. Bhutan has a ban on smoking, tattoos, and the sale and consumption of alcohol on Tuesdays. Furthermore, negative statistics such as the rise in cases of Aids and tuberculosis are suppressed.

But can Bhutan share its model with other nations? “It works because our country is small,” says Sonam. Randy Durband, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, agrees: “For practical reasons, few nations could follow their model because of Bhutan’s dramatic isolation. Perhaps a small destination could follow it, but not entire nations.”

Of course, happiness is a slippery state of being—by its very nature, it comes and goes. Trying to achieve it on a countrywide scale, then, may seem naïve; even impossible. Sceptics may accuse Bhutan of practising rose-tinted politics, yet their government has never denied the importance of GDP—rather, they rearranged its position in the hierarchy of needs.

Bad news always beats good to the headlines, and so too is it easier to pick holes in and argue about a fledgling do-good philosophy. As Sonam freely admits: “It’s complicated, but at least they’re trying a new model.” And in today’s increasingly fractured political and social landscape, perhaps this is an argument that’s worth having.

Measuring corporate accountability in an era of audacious bots https://briefnews.eu/measuring-corporate-accountability-in-an-era-of-audacious-bots/ https://briefnews.eu/measuring-corporate-accountability-in-an-era-of-audacious-bots/#respond Wed, 25 Oct 2017 21:49:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/measuring-corporate-accountability-in-an-era-of-audacious-bots/

We live in exciting times of unprecedented progress. Automation has a significant role in propelling human advancement, and digital transformation is the new status quo.

RPA, AI, and cognitive machine learning technologies are in the hands of business leaders as they command a new digital workforce. But as we cut costs and focus on error-free transactions and new service models, there are human workforces — our people — to consider.

Business leadership is on the frontlines of an urgent ethical discussion about well, human-ness in a time of accelerating automation. We must talk about the responsibility leadership has in creating this human-robot world of work — in embracing the audacity of bots. History will judge us by the difference we make in the lives of humans.

“Bot audacity” refers to the expectation that robots will outperform humans, execute cognitive functions, and think — the most human of skills — which in turn makes our workforces fear and resist this change.

To address this, we need to start a dialog on corporate leadership in this era of audacious bots to inspire further exploration.

Leadership’s moral mandate

Ken Goodpaster, Koch Endowed Chair in Business Ethics at the University of St. Thomas, pioneered corporate responsibility. Not just standard corporate social responsibility, but mission-driven organizations holding themselves accountable for their social impact. Goodpaster’s model brings the externality of moral value into the economic formula for an organization with three core principles:

  1. Orient the company toward important moral values
  2. Embed values in processes and practices
  3. Make these values an enduring part of the firm’s identity

To put this in context of audacious bots: How will a human-bot workforce evolve the value systems, processes, and practices of your organization?

What determines the moral values for the digital enterprise? Do we tie robots to human success — that is, a good robot is one that better enables a human?

As leaders, we must balance what is best not only for our customers, employees, and shareholders, but also for society as a whole.

The ethics of the future of work

The digital enterprise is economically desirable. However, the moral discussion is essential. This is a potential pivot point determining the trajectory of our collective digital future. How do we as leaders weigh in on the ethics of this amalgamated human-bot workforce? Is this future not just economically desirable but morally justified?

The foundation of modern economic and legal approaches, systematized by Jeremy Bentham, is the concept of maximizing utility. Put simply: If a decision maximizes pleasure and/or minimizes pain not only for ourselves but for others as well, then it is morally right. This approach has allowed us to justify decisions, especially controversial ones.

In the context of our audacious bots, assess for yourselves if we serve humans better:

  • By enabling the human workforce with bots that take over mundane tasks?
  • By advancing human progress by making more things possible?
  • By reskilling and creating jobs that we didn’t know existed?

Consider these questions along two axes:

  • Can bots deliver a better corporate future?
  • Will a human-bot workforce better serve our corporate agenda?

And in the wider view of humanity:

  • Are we enabling humans to be better off collectively, in the long term?

My answer to these questions is Yes. But only if we deliver with a consistent focus on humans.

Ethical sustainability of human values

On this journey of progress, I urge you to keep one concept at the forefront of your strategic decisions: the future ethical sustainability of human values.

It means two things:

  1. Continuing to value humans and their contributions.
  2. Sustaining the values that define us: empathy, kindness, joy, respect, grit, etc.

Are we able to sustain the value we place on humans and their contributions, embodied by the traits that make us human? Think of the tenacious scientist dedicated to a finding a cure, or an employee working late to ensure on-time delivery (remember, they are not 24/7 robots).

As a start, inject these dialogs into your own organizations:

  • Will bots better serve customers, employees, and society?
  • How do we ensure humans are better off in the long term?
  • Are we reskilling the displaced human workforce?
  • Are we encouraging processes to be human-centric?
  • Do organizational goals allow focus on human-ness?
  • What metrics place value on human contribution?

What gets measured will define our direction. If we hold ourselves to account for ethical sustainability, I believe we will succeed in this chapter of human progress. And history will witness a betterment of human life.

1969 Chevy Camaro SS 396 Quick Spin | Measuring Love In Cubic Inches https://briefnews.eu/1969-chevy-camaro-ss-396-quick-spin-measuring-love-in-cubic-inches/ https://briefnews.eu/1969-chevy-camaro-ss-396-quick-spin-measuring-love-in-cubic-inches/#respond Tue, 29 Aug 2017 21:46:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/1969-chevy-camaro-ss-396-quick-spin-measuring-love-in-cubic-inches/

I grew up around ’60s American muscle. My Dad and uncles and grandfather were all hot rodders and drag racers. The first car I ever worked on was my cousin’s 1964 Chevrolet Corvette. The first engine I ever disassembled was a 440 from a wrecked Mopar. The first time I ever transformed rubber into smoke was behind the wheel of a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. My tastes may have broadened over time, but my love of cars can still be measured in cubic inches. Getting behind the wheel of Hagerty‘s 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396 was like a shot of nostalgia straight into my veins.

This Camaro requires deliberate and calculated moves for every action. This isn’t a car known for cornering prowess or stopping power. Everything reacts slowly. Shifting in a modern car is essentially one fluid motion from foot to hand. With the Camaro and its poorly placed pedals, each step is an individual move. Clutch in, rev, shift, clutch out. Each turn of the slow, overboosted steering is a separate action. The brakes require a firm foot and ample stopping distance. Until you learn to dance, just focus on one thing at a time.

It may sound like I didn’t like the car. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I loved this thing. I love that it took concentration. I love that it wasn’t easy. I love the looks and the subtle burble from the engine. I love the smell of the exhaust and mechanical sounds from the doors, the seatbelts, the turn signal and just about everything else in there. Watch the full video to see me barely contain my excitement.

Upgrade Your Measuring Cups to Pyrex For $13 https://briefnews.eu/upgrade-your-measuring-cups-to-pyrex-for-13/ https://briefnews.eu/upgrade-your-measuring-cups-to-pyrex-for-13/#respond Sun, 23 Apr 2017 05:14:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/upgrade-your-measuring-cups-to-pyrex-for-13/

We love Pyrex around these parts, and their 3-pack of measuring cups is down to $ 13 today. In addition to looking great, the cups are microwave and (semi) dishwasher safe, and since they’re made of glass, they won’t absorb any odors, flavors, or stains. Plus, they just feel heavy and professional, and would make a nice gift.

Instrumments 01 measuring tool: Our first take https://briefnews.eu/instrumments-01-measuring-tool-our-first-take/ https://briefnews.eu/instrumments-01-measuring-tool-our-first-take/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2017 23:22:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/instrumments-01-measuring-tool-our-first-take/ There’s a finite limit to the number of ways you can measure an object, but some are more labor intensive than others. Take a tape measure, for instance: You’ve got to grab hold of one end tightly and extend the retractable end, all the while trying to maintain a semblance of perpendicularity against the fixture you’re trying to measure. It’s enough to give even the most seasoned contractor an ulcer.

But technology’s here to help. Enter the 01, an ultra-compact, pen-shaped measurement tool by Canadian startup Instrumments. It has an enticing promise: The ability to measure the sorts of obtuse angles and contoured edges that conventional rulers and calipers can’t.

More: Startup Instrumments’ 01 measuring tool measures curved surfaces

It’s a lot to deliver, but in our short time with a pre-production 01, we were impressed by what the little measuring tool could do.

It may look like a pen, but it does a lot more

A little background: The 01, which doubles as a refillable pen, packs a high-tech multi-sensor capable of recording the surface profile of objects. A rubberized wheel on the topmost axle handles measuring duties, and a red laser near the tip serves as a visual alignment guide.

Instrumments put a lot of care into the measuring pen’s design. The 01’s aluminum frame feels solid in the hand and comfortable in the palm, and that polish extends down to the packaging. The 01 ships in tightly padded foam casing, and comes with a hard-cover instruction manual with graphics that explain the setup and pairing processes. The attention to detail isn’t terribly surprising — Barbaric founded the design studio Pearl, and served as the industrial designer for the Misfit Shine fitness tracker and Empatica Embrace seizure detector.

Those measurements get sent to your phone. The 01 pairs to an Android or iOS device via Bluetooth and populates the Instrumments companion app with real-time length data, producing a reassuring, audible clicking noise as it rolls. The minimalist app lets you switch between metric (millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer) and U.S. (inch, foot, yard, and mile) measurements, and saves those measurements in a log for later perusal.

A paid, $ 10 a month subscription will soon unlock additional capabilities. The 01 will gain the ability to capture the curves of a 3D object and save that data in a format that modeling programs can understand.

Setup is a cinch. Once the 01’s tiny cylindrical battery is removed from its foam enclosure and placed in the 01’s battery receptacle, the unit powers on right away. We didn’t have any trouble activating the 01’s Bluetooth pairing mode or getting the companion app to recognize it. Minutes later, we were measuring every office nick knack within reach.

A new way to measure with a few quirks

We put the 01 through the wringer, rolling the diminutive measuring tool over a table, computer monitor, several chairs, smartphones, and our reviewer’s arm and palm. Subsequent measurements of the same objects produced results within millimeters of each other, and impressively, the 01 never once crashed or lost Bluetooth connectivity over the course of a workday afternoon.

We found some of the 01’s features particularly nifty. The laser can be programmed to blink at predetermined increments to help space measurements equally. The app can automatically translate scaled quantities on a map or drawing to real-time units, which is presumably useful if you’re working with blueprints.

If the 01 has a fatal flaw, it’s consistency. It may be accurate to within 01.mm, but the 01’s rubber wheel is extremely difficult to keep on a steady trajectory. It’s impossible to roll the wheel in a perfectly straight line. Barbaric said that the 01’s software compensates for errors by straightening out wavering lines, but for ultra-precise applications where millimeters matter, it’s probably best to break out a meter stick.

More: Consumer project measurement tasks could become easier with Plott’s Cubit

Ultimately, the 01 doesn’t clear the sky-high bar set by its advertising, but when it comes to a measuring tool that can get around angles and curved edges, there may not be a better — or more cost-effective — solution out there.

The 01 raised $ 464,000 on IndieGoGo, and in February, the 01 went on sale in London. It starts at $ 150, or an additional $ 30 for an optional leather case.

The 01’s replacement batteries, which last up to six months, are $ 20 for a two-pack, and Instrumments is selling non-proprietary ink and lead refills in three-packs for $ 16. You can read all about it and order one on Instrumments’ website.
