Remember those psuedo-inspirational ads that so many businesses put out at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic? And how suddenly, every company you’d ever patronized wanted you to know that they were with you, and we’d all get through this together?

At the start of black-ish‘s Season 7 premiere, Dre considers himself an essential worker because he’s trying to create a commercial like that: one that gives people hope (while also maybe selling them mayonnaise). His self-declared essential status doesn’t go over well with the actual essential worker in the house: Dr. Rainbow Johnson.

As Dre informs us at the top of the premiere, Bow has worked long hours at the hospital since the pandemic began. And Junior is her most vocal supporter. “It doesn’t have to be seven o’clock for me to applaud you,” the eldest Johnson child says, banging a pot in the kitchen, and Bow kinda digs the attention.

But at work, she and her fellow caregivers are tired, burned out and under immense strain. And the public support, often in the support of meals sent to the hospital, is nice. But even free pizza gets old after a while, Bow and her co-workers (played by ER‘s Parminder Nagra and Scrubs‘ Judy Reyes!) kvetch as they eat lunch outside.

As the women talk, Bow brags that Junior is really taking his pandemic responsibilities to heart. Of course, that’s the exact moment when her doorbell camera catches Junior’s girlfriend, Olivia, visiting the house despite the fact that the Johnson family’s quarantine protocols forbid it.

After lying about it a couple of times, Junior finally admits that he and Olivia missed each other so much, they broke the rules — but he maintains that he’s been super careful in every other aspect of his life. That’s when Bow, who’s bagging her work clothes in the backyard in the hopes of not bringing anything infectious home, blows up. “Having Olivia over here is disrespecting everything that I’m fighting for!” she says, near tears.”I’m really trying to believe that we can get through this, but it is really hard when people won’t do the simple things for the greater good.” Junior sincerely apologizes… then sneaks Olivia, who’s been hiding in the shrubs, back to her car after his mom goes inside.

Meanwhile, Dre screens various inspirational commercials for his parents and kids, with little effect (aside from rousing Ruby and Pop’s ever-simmering libidos). But he gets a last-minute save when Chrissy Teigen tweets a photo with one of his billboards in the background, with the caption, “Despite the desolation, we will rise again.” Or, as Dre interprets it, “I am essential!”

The episode ends with Junior quarantining in his room for two weeks… and losing his mind on Day 3.

What’s Italian for sticker shock?

THAT COMPETITION keeps prices down is well known. But it is hard to measure by just how much, because prices vary for all sorts of reasons, from differences in labour costs and rents to taxes. Rising to the challenge is a new paper in The Economic Journal by Giacomo Calzolari, Andrea Ichino, Francesco Manaresi and Viki Nellas, economists at the European University Institute, Bologna University and the Italian central bank. They looked at pharmacies and specifically at customers who may be particularly easy to rip off: new parents.

Using data for 2007 to 2010 covering about a fifth of pharmacies in Italy, the researchers measured the way in which prices of hygiene products for babies changed as the number of babies varied. They took advantage of a peculiar law from the 1960s, according to which municipalities with at most 7,500 people are allowed…

“The сrude and blunt US policy causes more and more rejection in many countries,” Ryabkrov told RIA Novosti, commenting on US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). “Washington should not underestimate the ongoing shift in sentiments.”

If the US continues to unilaterally abandon major international agreements, as it has already done with the Iran nuclear deal, Moscow will be forced to take retaliatory measures, the official warned. These could include “military-technical” measures, Ryabkov added, without providing any details.

Top Russian officials have warned that Washington’s move to abandon the INF might lead to “chaos” and complete disintegration of the non-proliferation system. One of the “fathers” of the treaty, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, called the decision a “mistake” which could “undermine all the efforts made by the leaders of the USSR and the US itself to reach nuclear disarmament.”

Berlin has also voiced concerns over dismantling the INF. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called the agreement an “important pillar of our European security architecture” and urged the US “to consider the possible consequences” before making a rash decision.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB) has pledged to maintain stability in the financial system, which is teetering on the brink of a crisis amid a rapid depreciation in the lira.

The Turkish currency plunged 25% against the US dollar last week, with most of that depreciation happening on Friday amid escalating tensions with the Trump administration and market uncertainty about the ability of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to manage the mounting problems in the Turkish economy.

The England squad land in Russia for the World Cup this afternoon ahead of their first game against Tunisia on Monday.

And, as a special request, they’ve asked to have English language TV channels in their hotel.

Sky Sports have sorted it for them so they can get four English channels in their rooms.

They have been given Sky Sports News, along with BBC 1 and ITV – so they can watch all the matches with English commentary – and were given one more option.

And the conclusive decision was taken to get ITV 2 in… so they can keep up with Love Island.

The ITV show has already gripped the nation after starting up again last week, and it appears to have gripped Gareth Southgate’s Lions too.

Southgate is keen for his charges to feel comfortable and at home throughout their stay.

The FA has spent thousands transporting their own gym equipment from St George’s Park to Repino to make sure they have the best facilities available.

England arrive at the Forrestmix Club after leaving Birmingham this afternoon, which will be home for the group stages at least.

Southgate opted for the resort due to the moderate weather and tranquility of a town with a population of just 2,400 that is 20 miles northwest of St Petersburg.

Every player has their own room but will be encouraged to spend most of their time in the communal areas and they are allowed to head to the nearby beach and wooded areas.

Players can have their families in the resort after matches to help them unwind during their down time.

China’s Didi Chuxing is rolling out new safety measures for its Hitch carpooling service after a driver allegedly killed a passenger last week. Drivers will need to verify their identities through facial recognition before each trip — the alleged murderer, who was also found dead over the weekend, was using his father’s Hitch account when he picked up the victim. Drivers using Didi’s other ridesharing programs must pass a facial recognition test before each shift as well.

Hitch suspended activities for a week following the killing, and will not allow trips between 10 PM and 6 AM while it explores additional safety measures for night-time rides. In the meantime, drivers and passengers taking a trip that’s likely to end after 10 PM will receive a safety reminder before starting the ride.

Previously, Hitch let drivers and passengers rate each others’ profile pictures and tag images with sexually charged labels such as “goddesses” and “beauties.” That feature drew criticism, as Bloomberg noted, and now Didi has nixed it. The company is deleting all of those tags and making personal information and profile photos private to each user — default images will replace public profile photos.

In addition, Didi is updating Hitch’s emergency help feature, and it will display the button more prominently within the app. When passengers activate the feature, the app will record audio and prompt a customer representative to monitor the trip, while the passenger’s emergency contacts will receive trip information. Users can also set up the button to call emergency services or Didi’s own emergency hotline. The company is rolling out all of these measures by the end of the month.

Didi is consulting with customers before enabling other safety protocols, such as an opt-in measure to record audio from each ride. Privacy concerns over such recordings might make them a step too far for some, though Didi insists the encrypted data will be stored only on its servers and not users’ phones, and will be deleted after 72 hours. Didi hinted that video recordings may be in the pipeline too.

Ridesharing safety has been in the spotlight this week beyond the Didi murder, with Uber and Lyft both ending forced arbitration in sexual assault cases, freeing victims to seek justice through the courts. Didi, meanwhile, is making inroads in North America: it’s recruiting drivers in Mexico and it received a permit to test self-driving cars in California.
