iOS 16 lets you "favorite" artists to better track them in Apple Music.

  • You can now add your favorite artists to Apple Music for easier browsing and to get notifications about new releases.
  • To add a favorite, tap the Star icon on the artist's page.
  • You can find a list of all your favorite artists on the Listen Now page.

If you use music services like Spotify and Tidal, you may appreciate the way you can add artists as favorites, which makes it easy to quickly browse to music you want to listen to. Starting in iOS 16, you can add favorite artists in Apple Music as well. When you set a favorite artist, you can find them quickly on the Listen Now tab as well as get notifications about new releases.

To use favorites in Apple Music, your iPhone needs to be running iOS 16 or later. You should check your version of iOS and update your iPhone if needed.

How to add your favorite artists in Apple Music

1. Start the Apple Music app.

2. Tap Search at the bottom of the page and then tap the Apple Music tab at the top.

The Apple Music app on iPhone.
Search or browse for the artist you want to make a favorite.

3. Search for the name of an artist you want to favorite and tap in the search results when it appears.

4. Tap the Star icon at the top of the page.

On the artist's page, tap the Star icon to make it a favorite.

If this is the first time you're adding a favorite, you might see a window asking if you want to be notified about new releases from your favorite artists. If you do, tap Turn On.

How to see your favorites in Apple Music

Once you add a few artists as favorites, you might want to use this list of artists as a way to quickly browse for music. To see your favorites, tap Listen Now at the bottom of the screen and then scroll down to the Favorite Artists section. You can tap an artist if you see what you're looking for, or tap Favorite Artists and browse the complete list.

Apple Music shows you all your favorite artists on the Listen Now page, though you may need to scroll a ways down the page to find it.

How to remove favorite artists from Apple Music

It's entirely possible to favorite an artist by mistake or get bored with their music and decide you'd like to remove the artist from your list of favorites. Removing a favorite is essentially the same as marking a favorite, only in reverse.

First, find the favorite artist you want to remove. You can do this by using the Search icon or by browsing via the Favorite Artists section on the Listen Now page. Once you've arrived on the artist's page, tap the Star icon at the top. The star should be deselected and the artist will be removed from your list of favorites.

"Avatar."

  • "Avatar" was re-released to theaters over the weekend ahead of the upcoming sequel.
  • It earned $ 30 million worldwide, $ 10 million of which came from North America.
  • It's a good sign for December's release of "Avatar: The Way of Water."

"Avatar" was the biggest movie in the world over the weekend — again.

James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic was re-released to theaters ahead of the December debut of its long-awaited sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water." It grossed $ 30.5 million globally, $ 10 million of which came from North America.

The strong box office for the 13-year-old movie is a good sign for "The Way of Water's" chances.

"Avatar" is the biggest movie of all time, now with $ 2.878 billion at the worldwide box office, including $ 770.5 million domestically.

"Avengers: Endgame" briefly topped it in 2019, but "Avatar" reclaimed its crown after a re-release in China last year grossed $ 50 million.

"Avatar" was remastered for this re-release in 4K at a high-dynamic range and with enhanced sound. Imax screenings accounted for 20% of the global gross and 29% of the domestic take.

The lesson here is to never underestimate Cameron, who also directed "Titanic" — which was the world's biggest movie until "Avatar" dethroned it.

"'You know what? I made "Titanic." This building that we're meeting in right now, this new half-billion dollar complex on your lot? "Titanic" paid for that, so I get to do this,'" Cameron told the studio regarding changes it wanted to make to "Avatar," he said in a recent interview with The New York Times. "And afterward, they thanked me."

The theatrical industry has a lot riding on "The Way of Water." After a promising summer, blockbuster tentpoles have been lacking in recent weeks. The only surefire hits coming to theaters the rest of the year are "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "The Way of Water."

Because of the movie drought, studios have recently re-released other movies, such as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Jaws." The former earned $ 6.5 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend in the US, and the latter made $ 3 million in that same period.

"Avatar" was up against the new release "Don't Worry Darling" over the weekend, which topped the US box office with $ 19 million after months of offscreen drama.

I left a 6-figure law job due to depression. I always feared being a ‘quitter’ — but now I don’t regret it. https://briefnews.eu/i-left-a-6-figure-law-job-due-to-depression-i-always-feared-being-a-quitter-but-now-i-dont-regret-it/ https://briefnews.eu/i-left-a-6-figure-law-job-due-to-depression-i-always-feared-being-a-quitter-but-now-i-dont-regret-it/#respond Mon, 26 Sep 2022 16:06:29 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/i-left-a-6-figure-law-job-due-to-depression-i-always-feared-being-a-quitter-but-now-i-dont-regret-it/

Henna Choi
Henna Choi left a high-paying job as a lawyer to pursue making TikTok videos.

  • Henna Choi, 28, left a high-paying job as a lawyer to pursue making TikTok videos.
  • She shares videos about her everyday life on TikTok. Her account has more than 470,000 followers.
  • Choi said her family's support has allowed her to nurture her creativity and follow her passions.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Henna Choi, a 28-year-old lawyer who is on leave from her job. It has been edited for length and clarity.

As the firstborn daughter of an immigrant family who comes from a culture where education is the most revered thing, I always knew I was going to have a big job. What I didn't know was that I would leave that job after just two years.

I always felt the internal pressure that so many children of immigrants feel. I had to succeed, and I had to succeed in the ways that my parents would find impressive — basically, I had to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. I chose law because I figured that's what I would be best at.

In undergrad, I double-majored in women and gender studies and equity studies, with a focus on race and disability. I figured that I could use my platform as a lawyer to help people who really needed it, but that's not quite how it worked out.

Becoming a lawyer was expensive

I have almost $ 80,000 in student loans. The pressure to find a high-paying job to pay off your student loans is enormous, so when I was offered a job that gives commission on top of base pay, I took it right away.

I was still able to help disabled people in my position, but it wasn't what I dreamt of when I was in law school. Between the reality of how little I enjoyed being a lawyer and my mental-health struggles with depression, I knew it was time to take a break — especially since I hadn't been on a vacation in years after going straight from undergrad to law school.

Now that I'm on a break from my job, I'm freaking out

This is the first time in my adult life I've had this much unstructured time for myself. In the back of my mind, I keep reminding myself that I can go back to the structure and safety of my life as a lawyer, but something is pulling me in another direction.

The thing is, I've always wanted to do something creative for work. As a child, I wanted to be an artist.

A few months ago, I found a creative outlet that really worked for me: TikTok. I share videos of my everyday life as a self-described "depressed lawyer," and I have more than 470,000 followers now. My success on TikTok has made me feel like maybe I can do what I want with my life — or at the very least, I can try to. There's so much uncertainty in my life, but there's also excitement and beauty like I've never experienced before.

It's terrifying to leave a secure, high-paying job, and I wouldn't be able to do it without my family

They've been so supportive of me taking a leave from my job and of the content I post on TikTok, even though my upbringing and our family relationships are sometimes the source of my content. They watch my videos every day and we talk about what I share. It's kind of wild, but it's also very simple: they just want to see me happy.

I thought I had to be an extremely successful person within the narrow boundaries of what society sees as successful for them to be supportive, but that's not true at all. They want what's best for me, even if that means not being a lawyer anymore.

The financial aspect of taking leave is definitely stressful, but I live in Canada, and I'm lucky to be able to partake in the country's unemployment benefits. I make the rest work through savings and a little bit of family support.

If my younger self could see me now, her first question would be, "What do Mom and Dad think?" It's so nice to think I could answer that with the truth: They're being genuinely supportive and allowing me to feel safe enough to take this chance.

I'm trying to nurture the creative soul inside of me instead of suffocating it

When I tried to stuff down my creativity and desire to be a good lawyer, I was deeply unhappy, and it took a serious toll on my mental health. Not being who you really are is painful to live with every day. I think my inner child would be proud. She always wanted to be an artist.

I don't know what's going to come next. I don't know if I'm going to return to my life as a lawyer or if I'll make it in the world as a creative person, but I do know I have to try. I was tired of fighting with myself. Going forward, we're on the same team.

I was raised to think quitting is terrible and you have to finish what you started, but I realized that allowing yourself the space to change your mind is so empowering. It's powerful to choose what you want your life to be like. Quitting something that isn't working for you is a good thing. Trying for something new is even better.

In this November 3, 2018 file photo, then-President Donald Trump stands behind Ron DeSantis during a rally in Pensacola, Florida, during his first gubernatorial run.

  • Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis haven't spoken in months, The Washington Post reported.
  • Trump endorsed DeSantis during his 2018 gubernatorial campaign but hasn't campaigned for him this year.
  • Privately, Trump now slams DeSantis as "ungrateful," telling advisers: "I made him," WaPo reported.

Though former President Donald Trump vigorously campaigned in support of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2018, the one-time allies have grown distant amid rumors they will soon launch competing campaigns for the 2024 presidential election.

Sources familiar with the pair's interactions told The Washington Post the two haven't spoken in months, despite Trump once saying DeSantis would make a good Vice President if he changed up his ticket in 2024.

Privately, Trump now lambasts the man he once referred to as his "great friend," calling the Florida governor "ungrateful" for his earlier endorsement, The Washington Post reported.

"I made him," The Washington Post reported Trump told his aides while monitoring DeSantis' public appearances and polling numbers.

Though neither has officially announced a 2024 presidential run, the two politicians are widely regarded as expected frontrunners in the upcoming race, which Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell predicted would feature a "crowded" primary.

"I don't understand what happened here," The Washington Post reported Trump said of DeSantis' diminishing support. "I don't understand why he doesn't appreciate me more."

Trump has made similar comments before, criticizing DeSantis for his "dull personality."

In response, DeSantis has taken steps to distinguish himself from the former president on the campaign trail, though he hasn't explicitly criticized Trump. His recent decision to fly asylum seekers to Martha's Vineyard sent the former president into a rage, according to a report from Rolling Stone, spurring political analysts to argue that DeSantis was taking the spotlight off of Trump and furthering their rivalry.

The strategy appears to be working: DeSantis has out-fundraised the former president this year to the tune of $ 43 million, according to data collected by OpenSecrets. Polling also suggests the governor has an advantage over the former president in a hypothetical primary match-up in 2024.

Representatives for Trump and DeSantis did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Longyearbyen, the largest city in Svalbard on May 2, 2022.

  • Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago by the North Pole, is one of the world's only visa-free zones.
  • But residents who can't support themselves or find housing can be expelled by the governor.
  • Insider spoke with four locals (one of whom was deported) about what it's like to work in Svalbard.

In a world where your passport dictates where you can live, travel, and work, there's a semi-frozen haven open to citizens of all countries — no complicated visa or employment permits required.

Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago 500 miles from the North Pole, is home to the world's northernmost human settlement. The 2,300 residents of the capital, Longyearbyen, include people of over 40 different nationalities, few of whom are "from" Svalbard, per say.

That's because you're not allowed to give birth on Svalbard — one of the many strange rules that govern existence on the remote collection of islands covered by ice.

There are surprises of course, whom the town endearingly calls "Svalbard babies" even when they're grown, Cecilia Blomdahl, a popular content creator based in Longyearbyen, said in an interview with Insider.

Among Svalbard's other odd rules left over from its days as a coal mining town include a monthly alcohol limit (24 beers, half a bottle of fortified wine, and one bottle of liquor), and a ban on cats to protect the bird population.

But the most important rule of all: Don't run out of money. And certainly don't find yourself without a home.

Cecilia Blomdahl's cabin in Longyearbyen, one of the few homes of its kind on the island.
Cecilia Blomdahl's cabin in Longyearbyen, one of the few homes of its kind on the island.

While the Svalbard treaty of 1920 permits anyone to live and work on the archipelago indefinitely, its open borders come with an asterisk: You must have enough money to support yourself and a roof over your head, or risk expulsion from the territory.

"You can stay here for as long as you can take care of yourself," Blomdahl said. "That means how you get to work, how you live, your housing — nothing will be provided for you."

Despite being a sovereignty of Norway, Svalbard employees pay an 8% income tax and local businesses contribute zero taxes toward the country's national insurance program (the mainland's current tax rate is 14% and 22% respectively). As a result, there are no retirement homes, public transport, homeless shelters, unemployment benefits, or really any social safety net you can think of.

Nobody understands this trade off quite like Mark Sabbatini, the founder and editor of IcePeople, "the world's northernmost alternative newspaper," who was kicked off Svalbard in 2021 after living in Longyearbyen for over a decade.

He moved to the island from the US in 2008 with around $ 1 million dollars in the bank and ambitions to launch an English-language newspaper, Sabbatini told Insider.

While running IcePeople, two of Sabbatini's apartments were condemned due to environmental issues he said were exacerbated by the area's rapidly warming climate. The first was built on top of thawing permafrost, and the second was located in a newly determined avalanche zone.

"At that point, I didn't have a whole lot of money and it was a big scramble every month to scrounge up stuff," he said. "I was begging, borrowing — not stealing, but pretty close."

After squatting in a friend's cabin during the pandemic, Sabbatini succumbed to his last resort: sleeping at the campground where a guide was killed in a polar bear attack the year before. That's when the governor gave him the boot.

"I was horribly miserable, but it was absolutely the right decision," Sabbatini, who now works at a local paper in Alaska, recalled.

"It's a very fair system. Your taxes are incredibly low, but the trade off is you get no social support," he continued. "If you're not paying for that system, why should you benefit from it?"

Cafe huskies Svalbard
"The planning of the schedule for the dog employees has been much more difficult than the human one," Fiala said.

Thanks to the local housing crisis, it's easier to find work on Svalbard than a place to live. Despite 2.5 months of complete darkness and below-freezing temperatures, the capital of Longyearbyen is a great place to be an entrepreneur, according to Martin Fiala, one of the co-founders of Café Huskies.

"If you have some idea, you're probably the only one who's doing it [in Svalbard]" he said. "I think if we set this up in a regular city where there's five other coffee places or shops on the same block, I don't think we'd be as successful."

But the area's remoteness also creates a separate set of challenges, Fiala explained, especially when it comes to shipping in goods from the mainland.

"If the coffee machine breaks, no one here can fix it and it would take weeks for us to get another one," he said, adding that "there's one guy in town who knows how to fix an industrial dishwasher."

"As soon as we save up some more money, we want to buy or rent another one and have it as a spare," he told Insider. "If there's ever a moon colony set up, I think we'd be perfect for it. It's really like a space station here."

Martin Fiala and his dog
Martin Fiala and his dog, Tequila: "Most of my job is to just to hike with my dog in like mountains. The price to pay is that it's exhausting and chaotic, but that's pretty awesome," Fiala told Insider.

Fiala and his co-founders all have second jobs, which made the launch of Café Huskies less of a financial risk. He studied architecture but currently works as a nature guide — one of many professionals in the local tourist economy with hidden passions.

"Here, in tourism, you have a lot of people working in reception, guiding, driving a truck," he told Insider. "But they're also an economist, a chemist, a photographer."

Why do people of so many different backgrounds and careers continue flocking to one of the world's most remote towns? One answer, according to Fiala, is that the extremity of life in Svalbard serves as a "catalyst" for both the best and worst qualities of humans.

"If you're depressed and you have a drinking problem and you come here, you'll probably just end up just drinking through the winter," he explained. "But if you're trying to finish the book, you're just going to do it. Life here gets dialed up."

  • More than 80 central banks are aggressively raising interest rates to cool inflation.
  • Rate hikes are the best tool for easing price surges but bring with them the risk of recession.
  • The synchronized rate hikes could throw the world economy into a slump.

Countries around the world are rushing to crush inflation. The price? A global economic downturn.

In the US, the Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell, has warned that the fight against rising prices will "bring some pain" to Americans by slowing job growth, making mortgages and credit cards more expensive, and possibly prompting layoffs. He characterized the Fed's inflation target as "unconditional," offering a clear signal that the central bank will accept some economic discomfort — and even a recession — if it means ending the price surge.

He's not alone. Central banks in the UK, Europe, Canada, Switzerland, Indonesia —  more than 80 countries in all — are similarly slamming the brakes on their economies to curb inflation, according to the World Bank. Monetary tightening is the broadest its been in five decades, and as inflation hovers at worrying highs around the globe, it's unlikely any central banks will ease up soon.

Policymakers' mission — to bring inflation to heel — has already caused downward revisions of forecasts for advanced economies' growth through 2023. Experts see job losses and weak wage growth on the horizon as economies shift into a lower gear. And businesses are already warning shareholders that things are only going to get tougher.

Corporate earnings offer the first signs of an impending downturn

Companies are already feeling the pain from the Fed's hiking cycle. On September 15, FedEx retracted its earnings forecast for the rest of the year and warned investors that the slowing economy will lead revenue to come up $ 500 million short of the firm's prior target.

When asked by CNBC's Jim Cramer if the global economy is entering a recession, FedEx's CEO, Raj Subramaniam, put it plainly. "I think so," he said.

Restoration Hardware's CEO, Gary Friedman, was more colorful when addressing recession worries in a September 8 earnings call.

"We're in a recession. Anybody who thinks we're not in a recession is crazy," he told analysts. "The housing market is in a recession, and it's just getting started."

Friedman and Subramaniam aren't alone. Of the companies included in the S&P 500, 240 brought up "recession" in their second-quarter-earnings calls, according to FactSet analysis. That's the highest share going back to 2010, when the firm started tracking such mentions. It also dwarfs the 212 "recession" citations seen at the start of the pandemic recession in early 2020.

Stocks' initial reaction to companies' slowing growth can pull the broad market dramatically lower, as it did on September 16, when FedEx's report amplified worries of economic weakness. That translates to less household wealth at a time when the S&P 500 is almost 20% below last year's highs.

Lower revenues and dampened profit forecasts can also lead to more immediate economic damage. Companies tend to cut costs to protect their margins when economic growth slows. That often shows up in the form of smaller raises, slimmed-down hiring plans, and, in the direst cases, widespread layoffs.

At some firms, job losses are already here. The Gap is set to cut 500 corporate jobs by laying off staff and shedding some roles entirely, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal published Tuesday. The move comes amid falling revenue and earnings and marks a major shift toward cost-cutting.

Tumbling sales have also prompted layoff plans at Walmart, Best Buy, and Bed Bath & Beyond in recent weeks. The former has also said it plans to hire fewer workers for the busy holiday season, further stoking concerns that waning demand will cut into the labor market's health.

Sales are expected to keep slowing, and "the current macro environment trends could be even more challenging and have a larger impact for the remainder of the year," Matthew Bilunas, the chief financial officer of Best Buy, said in an August 30 earnings call.

The Fed doesn't just expect some labor-market damage, it's betting on it. Powell has repeatedly highlighted the labor market's unusual tightness as a factor keeping inflation strong, with job openings still outpacing available workers two-to-one at the end of July. The US likely needs "softer labor market conditions" if it's to get over the inflation spell, the Fed chair said in a Wednesday press conference.

That softening is looking increasingly bleak, however. Projections published by the central bank on Wednesday show officials bracing for weaker growth, higher unemployment, and stickier-than-expected inflation through 2023. Those three factors are the key components of a growth recession.

If the Fed can get inflation lower with only a minor jump in unemployment, it's possible that the US can pivot to steady growth and a healthy economic expansion. Yet other central banks face the same predicament as the Fed, and as policymakers around the world rush to stifle inflation, the threat of a broader downturn looms large.

How a mild US slump becomes a deep global recession

More than 80 central banks are staring down the same problem. Inflation is well above their targets, but pulling it lower involves historically large rate hikes.

Such a hiking cycle comes with some unappealing trade-offs, but most have echoed the Fed's message: Some weakness today is worth it to make sure inflation doesn't get stuck at four-decade highs.

The Fed made its latest move on Wednesday, raising rates by another 0.75 percentage points to place its benchmark squarely in restrictive territory.

"If we want to set ourselves up and really, really light the way to another period of very strong labor market, we have got to get inflation behind us," Powell said Wednesday. "I wish there were a painless way to do that. There isn't."

That followed a hike of the same size by the European Central Bank on September 8. The ECB's 0.75-point hike was the first in its history and pushed its benchmark to the highest level since 2011. Officials noted that they expect to raise rates even higher to "guard against the risk of a persistent upward shift in inflation expectations," echoing the Fed's reasoning for such aggressive hiking.

The Bank of England, meanwhile, raised interest rates by half  a percentage point on Thursday, saying it would continue to "respond forcefully, as necessary" to elevated inflation.

That so many central banks share the Fed's outlook could become a huge problem. The world's fight against inflation could spark recessions in several countries as policymakers dramatically tighten financial conditions and slow their economies to a halt.

Such a globally synchronized downturn would be worse for everybody. A new study from the World Bank forecasts that should inflation prove more persistent than expected, the global economy could enter a downturn in 2023 before recovering the following year. Jobs would be lost en masse, high rates would crush some borrowers, and the recovery from the pandemic would give way to a new crisis.

"Recent tightening of monetary and fiscal policies will likely prove helpful in reducing inflation," Ayhan Kose, the acting vice president for equitable growth, finance, and institutions at the World Bank, said. "But because they are highly synchronous across countries, they could be mutually compounding in tightening financial conditions and steepening the global growth slowdown."

Central banks could be mere months away from a lose-lose scenario. If inflation doesn't start to cool soon, the prevailing options policymakers have are to slam the brakes on their economies and throw the world into a recession — or usher in an era of cripplingly fast price growth.

Donald Trump was the 45th president of the United States.

  • Donald Trump was the first billionaire to enter the White House when he became the 45th President.
  • Forbes estimates he is worth $ 3 billion, with a property empire including Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
  • Other assets he controls include hotels, office buildings, and golf courses.

Donald Trump went from real-estate magnate to reality-TV star to being elected the 45th president of the United States.

Worth $ 3 billion, according to a Forbes tally of all the assets Trump owns, he is the first billionaire to enter the White House.

Trump's fortune mainly stems from his property-and-hospitality businesses.

On Wednesday New York's attorney general filed a sweeping civil suit against Trump, his business, and his three eldest children. Letitia James said Trump "falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars" and "repeatedly and persistently manipulated the value of assets to induce banks to lend money to the Trump Organization."

Costco says it won’t raise prices for now on its membership fees — or its famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo https://briefnews.eu/costco-says-it-wont-raise-prices-for-now-on-its-membership-fees-or-its-famous-1-50-hot-dog-and-soda-combo/ https://briefnews.eu/costco-says-it-wont-raise-prices-for-now-on-its-membership-fees-or-its-famous-1-50-hot-dog-and-soda-combo/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 23:50:32 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/costco-says-it-wont-raise-prices-for-now-on-its-membership-fees-or-its-famous-1-50-hot-dog-and-soda-combo/ Costco food court
  • Costco said it has no plans to raise the price of its membership or its $ 1.50 hot dog combo at this time.
  • Costco exec Bob Nelson warned that membership fee hikes could come in the near future, though.
  • Costco recently raised prices on some goods, but Nelson said the company wants to be "the best value in the marketplace."

Costco has hiked prices on some items over the last year due to rising inflation, but the company has promised to keep the cost of two of the company's mainstays consistent, at least for now.

On the company's quarterly call, Costco executive Bob Nelson said the retailer has no plans to raise its membership dues at this time.

"Given the current macro environment, historically high inflation, and the burden it's having on our members and on all consumers in general, we think increasing our membership fee today ahead of our typical timing is not the right time," Nelson told investors and reporters.

However, Nelson clarified that just because the company is not currently announcing a membership fee hike, it doesn't mean it will not announce one in the near future.

He also attempted to put to bed rumors that Costco was raising the price of its famous food court staple.

"I want to address some incorrect information floating around on social media and a few other media outlets claiming that we've increased the price of our hot dog and soda combination sold in our food courts. Let me just say, the price when we introduced the hot dog and soda combo in the mid-80s is $ 1.50, the price today is $ 1.50, and we have no plans to increase the price at this time," Nelson said.

The big box retailer hasn't been able to keep prices consistent on all its goods amid rising costs. For example, the company has raised prices on other food court items like its chicken bake, muffins, and croissants due to the increased price of raw materials.

Nelson said that the company wants to be the "best value in the marketplace," and if it can prove that to customers, "it's easier to pass on higher costs."
