Former BBC correspondent Misha Glenny, who was born in the UK and studied at Oxford, was advised he could be targeted by criminals in eastern Europe after his book was published.

The eight-part BBC One drama based on his exposé of organised crime networks involved in drug smuggling and sex trafficking, is now a big hit for the BBC, starring James Norton as City fund manager Alex Godman.

Glenny said: “I was warned off going to Bulgaria and going to Montenegro after the book was published and I took those warnings quite seriously.”

Despite being published a decade ago in 2008, he believes the book is still relevant, particularly in the UK, where many rich Russians and so-called oligarchs emigrated in the 1990s.

“London is the focus, although my researches started in the Balkans, then to Russia and all other parts of the world,” he said.

“I did keep coming back to London because of the fact that London welcomed a lot of money from all over the world without actually scrutinising entirely where it was coming from.

“I was doing this research in 2005, 2006 and 2007, but what’s really astonishing is that 10 years later, it couldn’t be more timely because everybody now knows that this is going on under our very noses.”

Many crime bosses featured in the series closely mirror real-life criminals in the book.

Ruthless Moscow gangster Vadim is most likely based on Semyon Mogilevich (called “Papa” in the book), who Glenny says is “probably the most powerful Russian mobster alive” and “one of the most dangerous men in the world”.

The sex trafficking story about a young woman, Lyudmilla, is based on a real-life woman in the book, also called Lyudmilla.

After arriving in Egypt, the book says “she was bundled into a Jeep and driven for several hours” to a Bedouin camp and saw another woman shot in the knees.

The character Semiyon Kleiman, who in the TV drama wants Godman to launder his millions, is close to Ze’ev Rosenstein, an Israeli gangster with political links.

The author said: “It’s not very often you get non-fiction books turned into a drama series but I knew these writers wanted to maintain that authenticity.

“When they took one or two of the stories, more or less directly from the book, I was deeply flattered but also I was confident that what we were going to see, as a fiction, was actually indistinguishable from the reality.”

Glenny, who makes a cameo appearance as a BBC reporter in the drama, explained the thinking behind the title.

“It goes back to a conversation I had in Moscow about the Chechen mafia who were established in the country,” he said.

“I was told they used to sell their name to organised crime groups in other Russian cities who had to pay them to use the term ‘Chechen mafia’ but also had to promise that they would be suitably ruthless.

“The person describing this said ‘It’s like they’re the McMafia’.”

The third episode of McMafia is on BBC One tonight at 9pm.

McMafia viewers FURIOUS at new drama for very bizarre reason: ‘Bad job BBC!’ https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-viewers-furious-at-new-drama-for-very-bizarre-reason-bad-job-bbc/ https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-viewers-furious-at-new-drama-for-very-bizarre-reason-bad-job-bbc/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 09:30:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-viewers-furious-at-new-drama-for-very-bizarre-reason-bad-job-bbc/

As the Russian and Israeli speeches needed subtitles, it appeared that not all could read what was on the screen.

A large amount of viewers flooded to Twitter to comment on the size of the font, claiming it was ruining their experience of the show.

One wrote: “I bl**dy hate programmes with subtitles! I have shocking eyesight and can’t read the TV from where I sit! Therefore, after 13 minutes I am giving #McMafia up as a bad job @BBCOne. Shame as was looking forward to this!!”(sic)

A second added: “Watching #McMafia with my mum who is losing thread of programme as subtitles revert to tiny from her usual settings when character speaks in Russian. Such a shame @BBCOne Why no uniformity throughout for visually impaired?”

Another agreed, commenting: “Oh @BBCOne the subtitles on #McMafia are dreadful, too small and at times the letters disappear into the background.”

A fourth raged: “@BBCOne #McMafia love it but with so many subtitles you could increase the font size! Difficult to read at speed across a room.”

Meanwhile, the first episode saw a huge cliffhanger which appeared to set the tone for the eight-part series.

Alex Godman (played by James Norton) was left to choose war or peace and by the looks of the explosive trailer that followed the instalment, it seemed that son of Russian mobsters will keep with the family tradition.

McMafia continues tomorrow on BBC One at 9pm.

McMafia: A look behind the scenes of the sizzling new thriller series https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-a-look-behind-the-scenes-of-the-sizzling-new-thriller-series/ https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-a-look-behind-the-scenes-of-the-sizzling-new-thriller-series/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 01:33:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-a-look-behind-the-scenes-of-the-sizzling-new-thriller-series/

Last night saw the start of the BBC’s explosive new eight-part thriller series based on the shocking world of real-life global criminality.

McMafia has already been described as the must-see drama of 2018.

Starring James Norton, this edgy tale of English toffs and Russian gangsters tells the story of Alex Godman, the privately educated son of a Russian oligarch in exile who appears to have rejected his family’s past and chosen to become part of the English establishment.

As the story begins he is a high-flying hedge fund manager engaged to his equally accomplished banker girlfriend, played by Juliet Rylance.

However, a personal tragedy soon finds Godman involved in a dangerous game of cat and mouse involving gangsters from his Russian homeland and shadowy figures from the world of organised crime, including Mexican drug cartels, Pakistani drug lords and Balkan smugglers.

Director James Watkins, who co-created the thriller with Iranian screenwriter Hossein Amini, says they were interested in examining a world in which “the corporate has become criminal and the criminal corporate”.

The big budget series was inspired by journalist Misha Glenny’s non-fiction book, McMafia: Seriously Organised Crime. Published 10 years ago, it documented various real-life mafia organisations thriving around the world but remains just as relevant today.

Although Godman’s experience of being swept into the world of organised crime while trying to protect his family is fictional, the real world workings of modern criminality against which the action takes place comes from Glenny’s critically acclaimed investigation, which explored the modern spread of transnational crime following the break-up of the Soviet Union and the Eastern bloc in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

When communism fell, drugs, prostitution, money laundering and extortion soon followed on an industrial scale as Kazakhs, Georgians, Moldovans, Bulgarians, Yugoslavs and Russians all sought turf in the new gangster-land of Eastern Europe.

Post-Soviet protection rackets quickly sprang up and before long, the effects of the Russian organised crime boom had rippled out worldwide, from Europe to the Middle East, to Asia and to Africa.

It is on this intercontinental canvas that the action plays out.

This enabled James Norton, 32, to explore the full sweep of filming locations – which included Moscow, Tel Aviv, Qatar, Prague and Mumbai – while throwing his hat into the ring as a potential new James Bond.

For if 2016’s The Night Manager was Tom Hiddleston’s Bond audition piece, McMafia is quite clearly Cambridge-educated Norton’s turn to swan around in a dinner jacket while giving his impeccable vowels and devilishly symmetrical features an outing.

Best known for his roles in the British TV series Happy Valley, Grantchester and War & Peace, Norton was nominated for the Bafta for Best Supporting Actor for his role as ex-convict Tommy Lee Royce in crime drama Happy Valley in 2015 but lost out to Stephen Rea.

The casting of Norton was key.

“James has played matinee idols and princes but he has also played Tommy Lee Royce and we really saw the chance to collide those two types of character into one role,” says James Watkins.

“The thing with Alex is that there are two sides to him. He has been through the public school system and has this polished exterior but underneath it all he is still his father’s son.”

In real life Norton is the son of Hugh, a former lecturer at Hull School of Art and Design, and Lavinia, a teacher.

Born in London, Norton grew up with his parents in North Yorkshire and has described his privileged childhood as “idyllic”.

McMafia has already been described as the must-see drama of 2018

Educated at Ampleforth College, where he excelled in theatre and tennis, he read theology at Fitzwilliam College Cambridge and graduated in 2007 with first class honours.

He started his film career while still at Rada and has also appeared in theatre in London’s West End.

Juliet Rylance, 38, plays Alex’s girlfriend Rebecca.

The Radatrained stepdaughter of actor Sir Mark Rylance is best known for the 2013 film Days And Nights, based on the Anton Chekhov play The Seagull.

She starred in and produced the film, written and directed by her husband Christian Camargo whom she had met when he worked with her stepfather during Sir Mark’s tenure as the first artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.

Notably, the cast includes Georgian and Russian actors for authenticity, including Aleksey Serebryakov as Dimitri Godman, Alex’s father, and Mariya Shukshina as Oksana Godman, Alex’s mother.

“It’s actually a state-of-the-nation treatise on globalisation masquerading as a slick thriller – and we’re fine with that,” says Watkins.

McMafia: TENSE cliffhanger leaves Alex in a sticky situation but which side did he choose? https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-tense-cliffhanger-leaves-alex-in-a-sticky-situation-but-which-side-did-he-choose/ https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-tense-cliffhanger-leaves-alex-in-a-sticky-situation-but-which-side-did-he-choose/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 22:34:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-tense-cliffhanger-leaves-alex-in-a-sticky-situation-but-which-side-did-he-choose/

The crime drama introduced viewers to the Godman family and it seems that the Russian mobsters have got trouble at their doorstep.

Following the brutal murder of Uncle Boris (played by David Dencik), it seems that the there is another mob family rising to the top.

At the end of the violent first episode, Alex (James Norton) was left with the difficult choice of avenging his uncle’s death or learning to work with Vadim Kalyagin (Merab Ninidze) and tear him down from the inside.

The show came to a climax with the hunky lead character trying to decide if he should steer well clear of his family’s criminal past or whether he should get his hands dirty instead.

If the explosive trailer is anything to go by, it won’t take Alex long to rise to the top as a true mobster of his own right.

What’s more, viewers were loving the introduction to the dramatic McMafia world and flocked to Twitter to praise the new series.

One fan gushed: “James Norton being sauve and shady in a suit is the new years gift I needed. Thanks BBC. #McMafia.”(sic)

Another added: “#McMafia Okay! You got me! Hooked and not just because of #James Norton!”

A third posted: “This looks good, class. #McMafia.”

McMafia continues tomorrow night on BBC One at 9pm.

McMafia review: James Norton's compelling audition for next James Bond https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-review-james-nortons-compelling-audition-for-next-james-bond/ https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-review-james-nortons-compelling-audition-for-next-james-bond/#respond Sun, 31 Dec 2017 13:44:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-review-james-nortons-compelling-audition-for-next-james-bond/

He’s James Norton, latterly of Granchester, Happy Valley and War And Peace. OK, he doesn’t quite have the much sought-after film role (yet) as incumbent Daniel Craig is doing one more movie, but he has done a spectacularly good audition for the British spy character in his latest TV outing, called McMafia.

In it, he flashes his torso, wears a tuxedo and beats up assailants with cool efficiency; he looks neither shaken, nor stirred.

The first two episodes of the Russian gangster/oligarch drama go out tomorrow and Tuesday but what exactly is ‘McMafia’?

It’s not a Scottish outlaw. It’s actually the title of a book written by former BBC correspondent Misha Glenny in 2006 who says the term is similar to a “McJob” and was applied to the Chechen mafia during that period. Any notions about their inadequacy have been disproven over time, with accusations now of money laundering, racketeering, extortion and arms trafficking.

Glenny believes his book has been prophetic. “Ten years later on, it couldn’t be more timely because everybody now knows that this is going on under our very noses, and indeed at the very heart of Washington DC.”

James NortonBBC

Alex (James Norton) finds his safe world turned upside down

There is a brutality and ruthlessness of Russian/Chechen organised crime seen in this drama that will leave you breathless, drawn as it is from real-life figures in the book. The gangsters won’t have any difficulty in seeing themselves in this adaptation. Nor will Barbara Broccoli have much difficulty in judging whether Norton would make a good Bond.

“I warned [the director] James Watkins,” says Norton, “and [the screenwriter] Hossein Amini that, if they wrote the first scene as me getting out of a cab in a tux, they might stir some of it.

“Personally, I’m very thankful Daniel Craig is going to do at least one more film, two or five, I’m a big fan of his.”

As you were for now. But he’s certainly getting into shape. Norton, 32, Alex Godman, in the drama. He undertook classes in the Russian martial art “systema” for the eight-part series.

He says: “I went to these classes run by this amazingly eccentric man called David, whom I became very close to. The first thing he said to me was ‘The thing about English people, when they meet fear they run away; in Russia we meet fear, we shake him by the ****ing hand!’. I had hours of this man punching me. It’s all about taking the pain and relaxing through it. It was terrifying.”

The drama has many of the qualities that made The Night Manager such a big hit, this time two years ago. For Hiddleston read Norton. It also has glamorous locations (12 in all), desirable-ish characters who can’t help being villainous, car chases and bomb blasts. It’s big budget too, with backing from BBC, Amazon, and AMC, an American channel, so it looks, according to Norton, “like an eight-hour movie”.

But what of his central character? He is complex. “Alex Godman”, explains Norton, “is the son of Russian parents who were exiled from Moscow. He’s a young hedge fund manager living in London with his beautiful girlfriend Rebecca. He’s spent most of his life turning his back on his mafia past and establishing himself in the world of finance. Over the course of the show, for various reasons, he’s forced to confront his past and the show is his story as he delves deeper and deeper into that criminal underworld.”

This involves meeting a top organised crime boss in Israel who makes it impossible for Alex to avoid more nefarious activities.

While Norton doesn’t immediately strike you as a “method actor”, he has used some similar techniques. “I did this bizarre thing where I spent time as Alex doing really mundane stuff, such as buying milk or brushing my teeth, in his headspace with his demons, his conflicts, desires and passions. It meant when I was on set and they called action, the headspace became quickly familiar to me.

“I think it freaked people out when I walked about as a schizophrenic Russian banker and then would go back to being me but that’s my process!” He adds: “One day I would go to their shops as me and the next day I’d be someone really different. I have a theory that as an actor you should love the person you are playing, however abhorrent their actions might be. Alex is a good man, certainly at the beginning of the show, and sees the best in people. As the story goes on, certain demons emerge and that’s what I had to understand and was part of the challenge – not just understanding but loving him despite his faults.”

James NortonBBC

James Norton has been tipped to be the next James Bond

The drama doesn’t flinch at controversy. As it opens there’s a discussion between Alex and his father Boris about who may have killed Princess Diana and Dodi. Conspiracy theorists will be delighted.

One great challenge on set for the director was that the cast spoke two languages, Russian and English. In the drama, Russian is spoken but subtitled, including that uttered by Norton.

“It was a surprise when they mentioned I’d need to speak it. Alex speaks it badly as his parents are both Russian but he moved to the UK when he was nine, so he has a grasp but doesn’t speak it well. It was fun to play with, particularly in regards to his relationship with his father where they were sometimes speaking two different languages. I had a few Russian lines and I learned them phonetically with the Russian translators on set. It’s a beautiful language even though I had no idea what I was saying!” Norton believes it’s not just the palatial houses, champagne and caviar that will appeal to audiences.

“I think McMafia is unique,” he says, “because it’s a story about the mafia and there is something compelling and timeless about organised crime which makes great drama. The mafia has changed, particularly since the fall of the Soviet Union: it’s become a globalised corporation essentially. McMafia tells the story of the sexy side of the mafia which people are attracted to but also the cost of the lavish lifestyle, how it’s paid for and who pays for it.

James NortonBBC

James Norton starring as Alex Godman in McMafia

“The most important asset, though, is it’s a great story. Alex is sucked into this dark twisted criminal underworld and you desperately want him to turn around but as is often the case with good drama he makes bad choices along the way.

He believes we’re afraid to confront this dark world. But when you watch the drama you will understand why.

“I hadn’t read Misha Glenny’s book before I got the role but that was an eye opener. I was amazed and disturbed. It’s so pertinent and it’s an important conversation to have.”

It will also have you transfixed for eight hours if the first episode is any guide.

The London-born actress has a starring role as James Norton’s love interest in the hotly-anticipated BBC programme.

And if her previous TV stints have anything to go by, she will attract a lot of viewers.

In a resurfaced clip from American drama The Knick, the 38-year-old star stripped off for a steamy sex scene.

Playing Cornelia Robertson in the show, she went topless and flashed the flesh whilst sitting on a chair.

The programme followed the lives of the staff at Knickerbocker Hospital in New York during the early twentieth century.

Juliet will now be making an appearance on New Year’s Day as she plays Rebecca in the multi-million pound series McMafia.

She portrays the morally upstanding girlfriend of Alex Godman (James Norton) who is the son of a former Russian Godfather.

The eight-part series will see Alex dragged back into his mafia background as he’s forced to make some life-or-death decisions to protect the ones he loves the most.

The new show is based on Misha Glenny’s 2008 hit book non-fiction book McMafia: A Journey Through The Global Criminal Underworld.

McMafia airs on New Year’s Day at 9pm on BBC One.

How many episodes are in McMafia?

The BBC drama has eight episodes in total which will be kicking off in the new year.

McMafia has been created by Hoseein Amini and James Watkins with the latter directing the entire series.

The creators said of the new show: “McMafia is the story of our contemporary globalised world and the criminal underworlds that compete and thrive just beneath its surface.

“It is a truly international show, spanning dozens of countries, and we are thrilled that through our collaboration with Amazon we can reach the global audience it was always meant for.”

WHEN DOES MCMAFIA AIR?

The show will delve into the global criminal underworld with central character Alex Godman (played by James Norton) thrust right into the middle of it following a family tragedy.

Alex is a banker and the son of exiled Russian mafia don, whose family were forced to leave Moscow by rivals.

The City worker always follows the straight and narrow but he will be faced with the choice of whether to leave his family’s criminal past behind or follow a similar path.

When does McMafia start?

McMafia airs on BBC One on New Year’s Day (Monday, January 1) at 9pm as the action starts.

Fans won’t have to wait long, episode two will air the following day (Tuesday, January 2) again on BBC One at 9pm.

The series will then run for the next six consecutive weeks as the drama unfolds.

McMafia is a joint production between the BBC and US network AMC – who are behind the likes of Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Walking Dead – and is likely to be aired in America.

It will also be available to watch on internet streaming service Amazon Prime Video.

Is McMafia based on real-life?

Yes, the show was inspired by the book McMafia: A Journey Through The Global Criminal Underworld by Misha Glenny.

However, the story and the characters in the TV show are completely fictional.

The 2008 non-fiction book features interviews with people from across the world involved in organised crime.

In his book, Glenny looks at the rise of organised crime in the wake of the end of the Soviet Union, the collapse of the Berlin Wall and financial deregulation in 1989.

Glenny speaks to members of the criminal underworld from across the globe, who frankly discuss their dealings in the multi-billion pound industry.

He also interviews members of the police, politicians and victims about the impact of organised crime.

McMafia airs on BBC One on New Year’s Day at 9pm & episode 2 will air on January 2 in the same time slot.

McMafia release date, cast, trailer: When will McMafia air on the BBC? https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-release-date-cast-trailer-when-will-mcmafia-air-on-the-bbc/ https://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-release-date-cast-trailer-when-will-mcmafia-air-on-the-bbc/#respond Sat, 04 Nov 2017 18:58:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mcmafia-release-date-cast-trailer-when-will-mcmafia-air-on-the-bbc/

McMafia is based on the 2008 book of the same name by journalist Misha Glenny, who covers stories on organised crime across the glove.

The BBC miniseries follows Alex Godman, the British-born son of an exiled Russian mafia boss.

Alex has been educated at a private school in England and runs his own finance firm in City, by his own admission he’s been born with a “silver spoon in my mouth”.

He has been desperately trying to leave his family’s shady past and mafia links behind him by sticking to the straight and narrow with his girlfriend Rebecca Harper.

However, his legitimate and crime-free life will be rocked when his family’s past comes back to haunt him in a terrifying way.

A synopsis from the BBC reads: “What starts out as a story of survival and revenge becomes an epic tale of a man’s struggle against the lures of corruption in the modern world and in himself.

“McMafia is impressive and intimate, glamorous and gritty, global in scale and forensic in detail.”

The BBC hasn’t released a specific date as yet, however it will be airing later this winter on BBC One.

Back in February the BBC announced that filming was underway in London before moving to Croatia.

McMafia has an international cast led by James Norton as Alex Godman. Fans will know the actor from Happy Valley, War & Peace and Grantchester.

American actor David Strathairn portrays Israeli businessman Semiyon Kleiman – his previous roles include Hollywood movies The Bourne Ultimatum, Good Night, Good Luck.

Russian-Canadian star Aleksey Serebryakov plays Alex’s father, while Maria Shukshina takes on the role of his mother Oksana.

Juliet Rylance is Alex’s girlfriend, while Game of Thrones and Black Mirror actress Faye Marsay is Alex’s sister Katya.

The show also stars David Dencik as Alex’s uncle Boris Godman; Merab Ninidze as Vadim Kalyagin, a powerful member of the Russian Mafia; Oshri Cohen as Jospeh, an Israeli Bodyguard; Karel Roden as Czech gangster Benes; Caio Blat as Mexican cartel member Antonio Méndez; and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Indian business partner Dilly Mahmood.

The first McMafia trailer has been released by the BBC and gives viewers their first glimpse of the gritty, action-packed drama.

In the short one-minute teaser, audiences are immersed straight into Alex’s opulent world of luxury, before juxtaposing it with scenes of violence.

“I’m very happy with my life the way it is,” Alex is heard saying in voiceover, however he is issued a chilling warning: “Sooner or later they’ll come for you.”

Alex is given a choice between the “hall of peace” and the “hall of war”, hinting that he’ll be forced to make a choice during the series.

The show has similarities to The Godfather which sees Michael Corleone forced to make a similar decision between the mafia and a legitimate life.

McMafia will air on BBC One later this year.
