The Loose Women star has been dogged by anxiety for decades
“As soon as I found a seat on the platform I buried my head in my hands and focused on my breathing,” says Andrea, 48, speaking of the terrifying experience two years ago.
“I was just willing myself not to be sick.” The feeling of nausea slowly passed but her distressing symptoms weren’t the result of a virus or a bug, instead she was having a full-on panic attack.
Andrea, who is a panellist on the popular ITV talk show Loose Women, has suffered from bouts of anxiety all her adult life but it was something she’d always kept to herself.
However this time she couldn’t contain her fears.
“I texted my boss to say I’d been taken unwell on the way to work and wouldn’t be in,” she says, admitting that she was at the time too embarrassed to reveal what was really wrong.
“Professional middle-aged women don’t tend to shout about anxiety,” she adds firmly. “It suggests you can’t cope.”
Telling yourself to get a grip just makes you feel worse.
According to mental health charity Mind, about three million people in the UK now suffer from some form of anxiety – with women twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with the condition.
Symptoms include intense nausea, dizziness, insomnia, breathlessness, a racing heart and an overwhelming feeling of fear and worry which can cause sufferers to become increasingly isolated as they strive to avoid all triggers.
“If left untreated anxiety can have a huge impact on day-to-day life, lowering your immune system and affecting your ability to hold down a job, form and maintain relationships or take pleasure in life,” says Rachel Boyd of Mind.
“Anxiety is nothing like stress,” explains Andrea. “The physical symptoms can be overwhelming, as can the intense dread about everything going wrong.
“Telling yourself to get a grip just makes you feel worse.”
Andrea experienced her first panic attack at 24 when a stranger pushed her halfway down an escalator and then verbally attacked her.
THE incident provoked intense fear and she went on to have many more panic attacks over the years.
There is no definitive cause of anxiety although experts believe genes, trauma, upbringing and stressful life events can all play a part.
Andrea reckons she was born anxious. “Ever since I was a young girl I have tried to be perfect,” she says. “I wanted to do well and to make people proud of me.”
In her 20s and 30s, she was able to repress her anxious feelings.
“I’d sit silently through my panic attacks almost as if I was drowning on land, in full view, but nobody knew it was happening except me.”
But in 2012, shortly after the collapse of her second marriage, she experienced an uncontrollable attack just half an hour before she was due to appear on Loose Women.
“I couldn’t stop shaking or crying,” she says. “The team were wonderful and just lay me down and kept me calm. Luckily Ruth Langsford was able to step in for me.
nyone would feel anxious in the midst of such turmoil and Andrea convinced herself it was a one-off. Now she knows that isn’t the case.
“The funny thing is that anxiety can crop up when you least expect it,” she says. “It’s not something you can consciously control.”
Her panic attack on the Tube occurred shortly before her 2016 wedding to her third husband, businessman Nick Feeney.
Although Andrea was incredibly happy, the fact that she had recently undergone a hysterectomy and she was juggling a busy TV career alongside the wedding preparations put her under extreme pressure.
“It was all too much. I had terrible insomnia and had only managed two hours sleep the night before,” says Andrea, speaking from the Surrey home she shares with Nick, 45, and her children Finlay, 16, and Amy, 11.
In the past she might have forged on. Instead she got a taxi home and spent the day in bed.
“For the first time I gave myself permission to be anxious and not feel guilty,” she says. “By the end of the day I was so much better.”

When she had a hysterectomy two years ago she shared the news with viewers, to explain her absence.
Quite unwittingly she became the poster girl for the menopause and has recently published a book on the subject. “I don’t know which is more stigmatised – the menopause or anxiety,” she says lightheartedly.
“But not being able to talk about these things makes them so much harder to bear.”
Andrea readily admits that the menopause has sent her fears into freefall.
“Anxiety can now paralyse me,” she says, describing the impact changing hormone levels have had on her.
“When it does I can’t think straight or focus. I’m convinced I’m stupid, ugly and unlovable. I can’t sleep at night or function in the day. It weighs so heavily sometimes I can’t breathe.”
Andrea believes a combination of falling oestrogen levels, having to deal with the physical impact of the menopause and a general decline in confidence can all contribute to increased anxiety in midlife women.

Mind’s Rachel Boyd says women in their 40s and 50s have the highest levels of anxiety as they are juggling so many roles and responsibilities.
“The menopause comes at a time of life when there are already many pressures. When your hormones are changing it’s natural to experience a range of emotions.”
Andrea has learnt to tackle her anxiety head-on. “I have accepted that it is part of me and that I need to manage it. If I start fretting about the state of my house and trying to control everything, I know I’m vulnerable. That’s a definite red flag for me.”
Although she had not felt the need for antidepressants or therapy, HRT has helped to reduce her anxiety.
She also makes a real effort to eat well and to exercise regularly and swears by the restorative powers of mindfulness and yoga.
“I’ve learnt to be kinder to myself,” she says. “I know now that there’s no such thing as perfect. The world will keep turning if I stop rushing around for a while.”
Russell Brand appeared on Loose Women for a chat but conversation steered toward the upcoming wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
However, the 42-year-old found himself in trouble when he kept swearing during the interview where he also confessed he’d kissed Meghan years ago.
Subsequently, anchor host Andrea had to issue an apology.
As Russell joked with Janet Street-Porter, he exclaimed: “Oi, you’ve got some b****y nerve, you.”
Andrea intervened to tell Russell to refrain from repeating the expletive after an instruction from someone behind-the-scenes.
“I’ve been told in my ear that you have to stop saying that word,” the 48-year-old admitted.
“Which one?” he questioned.
Andrea explained: “The ‘b’ word, like bleeding but in the present.”
Russell then took the opportunity to apologise to those at home for himself.
He declared: “My apologies to anyone offended by my language, I apologise for that.
“Because it’s such a natural, normal environment I don’t check my language.”
The actor then went to tell the panel how he had kissed Meghan as part of a film role, although he still couldn’t refrain from swearing in the process.
After being asked if it was true, he divulged: “As a matter of fact it is. But let me say, before you get carried away with it – there’s a wedding on Saturday, focus!
“She was in a film that I was in. Get Him to the Greek, it was a b****y good film.
“Meghan Markle, didn’t know at the time because she wasn’t married to a royal person, I don’t remember the film that much, I think I planted one on her in the scene.
“It was scripted in the scene. I only know this because I think I saw a clip of it somewhere.
“Meghan Markle, there we go.
“They should bring that up [at the wedding]… if anyone has any reason… yeah Russell Brand snogged her in the film!”
Andrea once again had to apologise for the language when the show returned from an advert break before moving on to the next segment.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
Today’s interview started off on the wrong foot as BBC Breakfast viewers could hear Don speaking and playing chords on his guitar.
Using the music as a kick-off point, Louise welcomed viewers back to the show by saying: “Look at that! Right on cue.”
As Don began speaking over the presenters as they introduced him, Louise cut in and said: “We’re on air.”
Ignoring Louise, Don continued to talk, forcing Charlie to tap him and insist: “Don, we’re on air now.”
Coolly, he replied: “Yeah, okay.”
Laughing at the performer’s dedication to finish his sentence, Louise then cut in again: “Can I introduce you?”
But before she finished, Don started playing his guitar again.
Louise continued: “This is Don McLean.”
Insisting further, Charlie quickly asked: “Should we give you a formal introduction?”
“No,” he replied. “Let’s not.”
Whilst discussing his music career, Charlie mentioned Don’s breakthrough song American Pie, asking about the writing process.
After Don answered, he swiftly burst into a rendition of the song, serenading the presenters and the crew.
Once he had finished performing, the presenters thanked the singer for joining them, and hastily closed the show, having ran out their time.
One viewer jokingly tweeted about the performance: “That’s the problem with someone holding a guitar – they could burst into song at any moment #bbcbreakfast.”
While another riffed: “Charlie and Louise struggling not to cringe? #bbcbreakfast.”
At least Don’s mic was working, which wasn’t the case earlier on in the show for weather reporter Matt Taylor, who experienced a technical error live on air.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
The judge vehemently denied the accusations Andrea laid before him, which made for uncomfortable viewing.
Loose Women host Andrea, 48, appeared on Dancing On Ice as a contestant back in 2006, when the notorious Australian was on the panel.
The moment came as Linda Robson asked Jason: “Is there anything you ever said that you regret saying to anyone?”
Denise Van Outen then jumped in to question: “What did you say to Andrea?”
Jason, 46, hesitated for a moment before Andrea chimed in.
“I think it was that I ‘looked like a giraffe having sex on ice’.”
However, Jason looked around quizzically before denying the accusations.
“I don’t remember saying that because I don’t think I’d be allowed to say that on television,” he claimed. “I think that’s something the press made up.
“I certainly would never have said that, because it’s not that funny.”
Andrea didn’t look so certain, but replied with a hesitant: “Oh, okay.”
Despite his denial, there is actually truth in Andrea’s assertions as Jason did make the inference in an interview from 2006.
“Standing still, Andrea looks great,” he told The Sun. “But I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a giraffe try to run or have sex – it’s not pretty. They look awkward.”
Although it was clear Andrea didn’t take the comments to heart, as she excused Jason from what he had said to her during her time on the show.
She said: “I know you’re lovely, I took it on the chin. You were right, I really wasn’t very good.”
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
Dancing On Ice continues Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
While discussing a recent trial where a woman burned her husband after an argument, the ITV presenter asked her colleagues if they agreed with the judge’s decision that the defendant’s actions were “understandable but not justifiable”.
However, as she turned to Nadia Sawalha, it appeared that she wasn’t paying attention.
The 52-year-old panellist said: “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t actually listening in that moment Andrea.
“I don’t know what to do,” she joked while holding her head in her hand.
Andrea, 48, and the entire Loose Women studio erupted in laughter, as the former joked: “We are on a live TV show!”
Nadia defended: “I was having trouble with my earpiece and I was trying to tell the director. I’m so sorry!”
Ever the professionals, the four-piece composed themselves and continued with the sensitive topic.
It wasn’t the only blunder to hit the Loose Women though, as the show accidentally put a naked man on screen.
While introducing Sheila Reid, who plays Madge Harvey in Benidorm, a clip of the hit comedy was shown.
However, it didn’t quite get edited correctly as the end of the short clip contained a fully naked body with genitalia included.
Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV at 12.30pm.
The two sparring Loose Women panelists locked horns when discussing the idea of legalising drugs.
Penny, 46, was fearful over illegal substances becoming the norm, claiming that they stay in the body for longer than alcohol.
Janet, however, suggested that the use of drugs hasn’t seen any decline during the years it has been banned, concluding that the current system is defunct.
“Whether people go on to take drugs depends if they’ve gone to a dangerous level,” she explained.
”It depends if they’ve got an addictive personality and addictive personalities can apply to anything: it can apply to shopping, smoking – gambling, which is another huge problem in this country, especially with teenage boys.”
She continued: “I don’t condone people who want to take class a drugs to dangerous levels, but I dispute what Penny says because I don’t think some drugs, soft drugs, cause anymore harm than alcohol.”
“It stays in your body for way, way longer,” Penny stressed, before Janet furiously interrupted.
“No it doesn’t stay in your body for way, way longer Penny,” she squawked. “There’s all sort of different categories.”
Penny cried: “It does stay in your body for longer. Marijuana, weed stays in your body for two weeks; alcohol goes out of your body in a matter of hours.”
“Then why are hospitals clogged up with people with injuries and diseases caused by alcohol addiction?” groaned Janet.
Andrea, 47, was forced to intervene and yelled: “You two don’t talk over each other, take turns!”
But Janet couldn’t help herself, and smirked: “Well Penny can just take over the show and share her point of view, but why don’t we ask Maya [Jama]?”
Also in today’s show, Ruth Langsford, 54, unveiled an X-rated video of herself whipping a “slave” while dressed in bondage gear.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
The 47-year-old brunette bombshell regularly teases viewers with a glimpse at her sensational figure, but today she appeared to up the ante in a sexy cold-shoulder dress.
Andrea looked gorgeous in the white floral patterned number, which featured a plunging neckline and was tailored to hug her slender waist.
Loose Women fans flooded to Twitter to comment on her look, with many observing how much flesh she was flashing.
“Andrea is showing a lot more skin than usual,” one said, while another tweeted: ????
“Andrea has really embraced the cold shoulder,” said one viewer, noting the ITV favourite’s love for the style of dress.
A fourth cheeky fan even added: “Might watch #LooseWomen to see if Andrea’s t**s fall out. Could be entertaining.”
Andrea certainly gave Loose Women viewers an eyeful at one point in today’s show, when the panel were joined by TOWIE star Gemma Collins, 36, to add a bonus prize to their competition.
The women had to inflate balloons with a pump to reveal which prize would be available to competition hopefuls.
Andrea bent over towards the camera as she energetically pushed the mechanism, flashing a glimpse down the front of her frock.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
The ITV panel was left in chaos during today’s show when they returned after an advert break in a flurry of giggles.
As the cameras started rolling again, following a pre-recorded segment explaining their latest viewer competition, Loose Women host Andrea, 47, couldn’t even speak.
Howling with laughter, she struggled to regain her composure, pointing at Nadia, 52, as she giggled: “Are you okay?”
Fellow Loose Woman Coleen Nolan, 52, and Stacey Solomon, 27, also descended into hysterics as Nadia appeared unable to reply.
“I just looked round and I saw Nadia go, ‘They’ve come loose!'” Andrea said to the audience, mimicking her co-star as she glanced down at her chest as she spoke.
As the studio audience erupted into laughter, Nadia tried to explain herself, saying: “You know how sometimes you have to pull your boobs round the side in a particular bra? Well I did that before the show but somehow they came round the front!
“I just said to the girls, ‘You didn’t tell me they’ve come round the front!” she exclaimed.
Stacey then chipped in: “I’m sure that’s the wrong way round. Nobody’s dragging their boobs away from each other. They’re supposed to be together!”
It took Andrea a while to pull herself together after the hilarious incident, eventually settling down to continue on with the rest of the show.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
The presenter spoke out on Loose Women just days after she took to Twitter to announce that she was engaged to her partner of three years, Nick Feeney.
The 47-year-old, who has been married twice before, hit back at suggestions she was a “hypocrite” and opened up about what made her change her mind.
Appearing on the ITV show alongside Linda Robson, Katie Price and Janet Street-Porter, Andrea commented: “I’ve sat here in this very seat, saying, ‘Never again!’”
After the latter, 70, suggested she’d been lying, the TV star continued: “Janet, I’m not a hypocrite, I just changed my mind.
“I genuinely felt I didn’t want to get married again. Nick and I had been together for a couple of years or so, and he said, ‘You know you keep saying never again… it makes me feel really bad that you don’t want to marry me’.”
Andrea, who was previously married to Nick Green and Steve Toms, went on: “To just dismiss it like that is quite insulting and I hadn’t considered that.
“It was the kids that made us change our mind, they really wanted that security. Hopefully third time lucky.”
Katie, 39, then pressed her on when their nuptials could happen, to which she added: “Quite soon, maybe [this year].”
The latest instalment also marked Janet’s 500th episode and she was grilled by the trio on her background, before being surprised by pal Eamonn Holmes.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A U.S. lawmaker says Chinese authorities have released an American college student who was arrested in their country a week ago after reportedly injuring a taxi driver who was roughing up his mother in a fare dispute.
The office of Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines says police in central China freed 25-year-old Guthrie McLean early Monday, local time.
The University of Montana senior was detained July 16 in the city of Zhengzhou on charges of intentional injury.
His mother, Jennifer McLean, alleges police demanded the equivalent of $ 7,400 in compensation from the family and threatened to imprison her son for up to three years if they refused to pay.
Local police have declined to comment on the case.
Jennifer McLean told The Associated Press her son’s actions were justified because the taxi driver was hurting her.
