Only four of the 54 players in action shot higher than McIlroy’s 74 as his bid for a career Grand Slam crashed and burned. A share of fifth place, six shots behind winner Patrick Reed, was a bitter disappointment but he promises he will be back. “I played probably some of the best golf I’ve ever played here; it just wasn’t meant to be. Of course it’s frustrating and it’s hard to take any positives from it right now but at least I put myself in a position – that’s all I’ve wanted to do,” he said. “For the last four years I’ve had top tens but I haven’t been close enough to the lead. Today I got myself there, I didn’t quite do enough but I’ll still come back next year and try again. “I think 100 per cent I can come back and win here. I play this golf course well. I just haven’t played it well enough at the right times.” McIlroy’s missed tiddler for an eagle at the second hole which would have tied for him for the lead appeared to be a turning point but he pointed to the bogeys at the third and fifth as more important in allowing Reed to keep his nose in front. “I’d say three and five are the ones that I’d look back on thinking if I could have made pars there it could have been a different story,” he said. “Every time I took a step forward I took a step back on the next hole. I had a chance to maybe put a bit more pressure on him than I did. “I’ll sit down and reflect over the next few days and see what I could have done better. Whether it be mindset or whatever, I just didn’t quite have it today. “The putter let me down a little bit, I just wasn’t quite as trusting as I was the first few days and that made a big difference. When I did get some chances I didn’t take advantage of them. “I feel like momentum is a huge thing, especially in final rounds. You look at what Jordan [Spieth] and Rickie [Fowler] did – they got on a roll and I just didn’t. It wasn’t as if nerves got to me. I just didn’t quite have it. “It was a tough day and hopefully I’ll be better next time.” McIlroy (-11) is bidding to become the sixth man to win the career Grand Slam and is within striking distance of overnight leader Patrick Reed (-14). Reed, who has yet to land a major title, takes a three-shot lead into the final round having made two eagles in a round of 67. Rickie Fowler (-9) is third, one ahead of Jon Rahm (-8). Four-time champion Tiger Woods, who was among the bookies favourite to win at Augusta, sits on four over after three rounds. SO IT BEGINS… 15:30: The first few are out and about on a beautiful day in Augusta. Vijay Singh (+7), who led at one point, open things up with par followed by a birdie. Ian Poulter (+6) does the same with birdie on the first. Phil Mickelson (+7) has just begun his round. AFTERNOON Hello everyone, I’ll be your host for the final day of the Masters 2018. I say it every year, but It’s gone too quickly, right? Anyway, we’ve got a mouth-watering final day to look forward to with Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy going head-to-head for the famous Green Jacket. Those two get going at 7.40pm. Before they get started, we’ve got plenty more going on with 2000 Masters champions Vijay Singh teeing off at 3pm. He’s followed by Ian Poulter, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, who wants to end the week on a high. WHAT THEY SAID… Rory McIlroy: “It’s massive to be in the final group for the first time here since 2011,” said McIlroy. “I’ve been waiting for this chance, to be honest. I always have said that 2011 was a huge turning point in my career. It was the day that I realised I wasn’t ready to win major championships, and I needed to reflect on that and realise what I needed to do differently. “But now I am ready. Obviously I’m not in the lead like I was going into that day, so I probably don’t have as much pressure. I don’t have to protect anything. I can go out and sort of freewheel like I did today, which is a great position to be in. “I wish I was a little closer to the lead or leading, but I’m in the final group and I’ve shot 65 on moving day at the Masters. It’s all I can ask for. “I’m really excited to show everyone what I’ve got, to show Patrick Reed what I’ve got and all the pressure is on him. He went to Augusta State and has a lot of support and I’m hoping to come in here and spoil the party. “Patrick’s got a three shot lead, I feel like all the pressure’s on him. He’s got a few guys chasing him who are pretty big time players. He’s got that to sleep on tonight.” Patrick Reed: “It’s going to be a lot of fun. “Obviously we’re both playing really solid golf to be able to go into a final round on Sunday at the first major. But really I’m just going to do my thing and stick to my game plan and go out and enjoy my Sunday. “I’m not out there to play Rory. I’m out there to play the golf course. The biggest thing I can pull from Hazeltine is I was going head to head with Rory and was able to put together a really good round, and when he tried to make a counter, I was able to always stay ahead and keep going.”

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed will renew their rivalry during the final round of the Masters on Sunday as the two pulled away from the pack in the third round.
Reed shot a third-round 67, his third-straight sub-70 round, thanks to two back-nine eagles to move to 14-under. Meanwhile, McIlroy had five birdies and an eagle in his bogey-free round of 65 and will enter the final group on Sunday three shots back as he aims to complete the career Grand Slam.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The Northern Irishman moved to seven under for the day, shooting back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes at Augusta – but his pursuit of Patrick Reed looked momentarily in trouble after finding the bunker on the fifth.
Trapped under the steep face just south of the green, McIlroy’s chip attempt out of the bunker slammed into the top lip as he turned away in disgust at the effort.
But incredibly, the ball soared high into the air propelled by a huge amount of top spin and landed fortuitously around 30 yards short of the green.
It rolled on and on, before finally coming to a halt within birdie range as McIlroy couldn’t help but crack a smile at his luck.
His joy was short-lived however as the ensuing birdie putt fell just short.
Minutes later, McIlroy fired a phenomenal iron shot centimetres short of the hole on the par-three sixth.
Any backspin would have seen the 28-year-old slot a sensational hole-in-one, taking advantage of a mixed day for tournament leader Reed so far.
Reed is currently evens through five, having started the day with a bogey on the third before finding a birdie at the fifth to restore a two-shot lead at the top.
Speaking after play yesterday, Reed seemed relaxed about leading the pack at the halfway stage.
“I’m just going to go ahead and do the same thing I’ve been doing,” he said.
“My game plan has gotten me to this point, and I have 36 more holes to stick to my game plan. The biggest thing is to execute and stay patient out there and give myself opportunities to make birdies and try to roll in some putts.
“I believe that if I play the golf that I know how to play, that I can win Majors.”
Organisers of the event confirmed a story run last week by Express Sport that McIlroy is returning to the event for only a second occasion after contesting the then 2016 Northern Trust Open and finishing T20th behind Bubba Watson.
The Tiger Woods Foundation took over the running of the event this year but with Woods being forced out due to injury and this after withdrawing ahead of the second round some weeks earlier at the Dubai Desert Classic.
With Woods, however, seemingly back to his best as evident in finishing T9th in the recent Hero World Challenge and McIlroy no doubt being fully recovered after a nagging rib injury ruined his 2017 season, there is now the prospect of Woods and McIlroy, and clearly golf’s two most exciting players, renewing their rivalry in the same event.
Of course, Woods could join McIlroy a week earlier in the February 8th starting AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and while McIlroy has added the event to his 2018 PGA Tour schedule, Woods has not contested the Pebble Beach tournament since finishing T15th five years ago in 2012.
The last time we saw Woods and McIlroy tee-up on the same course was at the 2015 PGA Championship at Whislting Straits in Wisconsin.
And if this Genesis Open news is correct it will mean that some 30 months will have passed since the pair last entered the same event.
“I’m excited to return to Riviera for the 2018 Genesis Open,” McIlroy said in a statement released today (Monday).
“Riviera is one of the best tests on the PGA Tour nd I’m looking forward to being back in Los Angeles this February.”
Of course, the statement was no about to confirm Woods will be contesting the $ US 7.2m event but you could have at a guess if Woods returns to full-time competition, and as expected in January’s Farmers Insurance Open, then he will be a starting in his own Genesis Open.
The four-time Major winner has singled out, and when quizzed who if he had the chance to ‘trade places’ with, champion Irish racehorse, Galileo.
Galileo, and foaled in March 1998, is now retired and a very active sire.
But in a racing career of just one year from October 2000 to October 2001 Galileo contested eight races winning six and finishing second and sixth in the other two.
The racehorse is best known for winning the Epsom Derby, Irish Derby Stakes and the King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2001 and for his rivalry with the Godolpin champion Fantastic Light.
And since his retirement, the 64.5 inch high Galileo has become one of the leading sires in the world and is the sire of multiple champion including Frankel, New Approach, Australia and Minding.
In 2008, the Coolmore Stud owned Galileo was commanding in 2008 a reported Euro 225,000 fee while his stud fee three years ago was set at Euro 350,000 and by October 2014 he had sired 176 stakes winners.
And as of July this year, Galileo had sired 67 individual Group One or Grade One winners worldwide.
McIlroy visited Coolmore Stud some years ago and meeting Galileo certainly left an impression when asked by NoLayingUp.com who he would love to trade places with.
“A couple of years ago I went to a famous horse stud name ‘Coolmore Stud’ where they breed some of the best race horses in the world,” he said.
“Their biggest stallion is a horse called Galileo.
“I wouldn’t mind would mind trading places with him for a week.
“He now has a pretty good life and he’s loving it. That is the one guy or specimen that came to mind.
“The human version would be maybe DiCaprio, I don’t know.
“So, I don’t know how many mares Galileo covers a day but literally people would pay $ 500,000 grand a ‘go’ to have to have a racehorse by Galileo. It is unbelievable money out of this.
“Clearly, Galileo doesn’t make any money but the Magner Family who own Coolmore Stud … is just unbelievable the number of race horses, stallions and mares that go through there is unbelievable.”
Spieth’s dramatic Open victory at Royal Birkdale means he needs to win the final major of the year to become the youngest player – and only the sixth ever – to complete a career grand slam.
And although McIlroy has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite on the back of his improved form and superb record at Quail Hollow, the world number four knows Spieth will be tough to beat.
“He has got that knack,” McIlroy said. “I call it resilience. I don’t know if there’s a better word to describe what it is that he has. But he has got this resilience where he gets himself in positions in tournaments where you don’t think he can come back from, and he does. It’s awfully impressive.”
Spieth took a three-shot lead into the final round at Birkdale but found himself one behind Matt Kuchar after a fifth bogey of the day on the 13th, which followed a wild drive, penalty drop and 20-minute delay before playing his third shot from the practice range.
However, the 24-year-old almost holed his tee shot on the par-three 14th as he played the next four holes in five under par to finish three ahead of a shellshocked Kuchar.
McIlroy added: “You can stand and hit the shots that he was hitting for those last five holes at the Open on the range, no problem. But being able to do it under those circumstances, under the pressure, that’s what makes him so good.
“Resilience, mentally tough, strong, whatever you want to call it. That’s his biggest asset. Being able to forget about a bad shot and move on to the next one, that’s his greatest weapon.”
McIlroy won his fourth major title at the 2014 US PGA but has failed to genuinely contend for another since, despite a share of fourth place in the Open being his sixth top-10 finish.
But the 28-year-old could hardly hope for a better venue than Quail Hollow to end his barren streak, having won his first PGA Tour title here in 2010 and cruising to a seven-shot victory in 2015, which featured a course record of 61 in the third round.
“Obviously I haven’t won this year and there’s been a few components to that, injury-wise, changing equipment and stuff. It has been a bit of a transitional year,” McIlroy said.
“But I feel like everything’s settled. My health is pretty much where it needs to be so I just want to go out there and play well this week.”
The US PGA will move from August to May from 2019, with the Players Championship switching to March and the BMW PGA Championship moving from May to September.
“From a player’s perspective, to now have one really big tournament every month from March and to have the FedEx Cup most likely at the end of August or start of September, it just has a better flow to it, I think,” McIlroy said.
Aside from holing a monster 80-foot eagle putt at the second and where he drove the front edge of the green, McIlroy struggled finding just five of 14 fairways and for the most part was seen marching left, right, left, right about the course on route to a horror six over par tally.
It was McIlroy’s highest score in 27 rounds of a U.S. Open, a shot more than a 77 he shot on day two in 2010 and also on day one in 2012.
And on each occasion McIlroy missed the cut.
His “rusty” Erin Hills endeavour left McIlroy trailing 13 shots behind good friend Rickie Fowler who not only recorded his best score in a U.S. Open but in the process matched the lowest first round to par in a U.S. Open set 37-years ago by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf when they shot seven under 63s in 1980 but at Baltursol in New Jersey.
Fellow American Xander Schauffele, ranked a lowly 352nd in the world, had the chance to join Fowler but missed a short putt for birdie on his closing hole in a round of a six-under 66 to finish tied in second with England’s Paul Casey.
McIlroy later attributed his poor showing to “rust” given he has not competed since finishing mid-field last month in the Players Championship.
“Well, it all started so well. I just, I don’t think I hit a fairway from the 10th,” he said.
“I hit the fairway on the 10th, and I didn’t hit one on the way in. You cannot play this golf course if you’re not in position off the tee, and I wasn’t in position. Obviously, I paid the price for it today.
“The good thing was that I felt well and no concern. I feel great and that’s all totally fine. I was hacking around in the rough out there and didn’t feel it one bit. So, no, that’s totally fine.
“My timing was a little bit off, and that was it. I just really bad tee shots which led to obviously not being able to give myself many looks for birdies.
“So, there is a little bit of rust there. A bit of rust, timing as my timing was a little off. I started missing some left on the course and tried to sort of correct it on the way in and missed a couple right.”
In contrast to McIlroy’s demeanour, Casey could not contain his excitement declaring it to be the most fun he has ever had at a U.S. Open.
And the fun started after just three shots with Casey holing his 75-yard wedge for an eagle “3”.
Casey then birdied the second hole and while he bogeyed the fourth, the 39-year old kept the foot down with five more birdies and one other bogey and that was on the 10th to record his equal lowest score in 40 rounds of the event.
“I shot 66 at Oakmont, way back in ’07 on Friday but scoring that day was ridiculously high and it was a whole different kettle of fish,” he said.
“But this round today was a fun low round. There were errors in there. I don’t boast it as a truly great round of golf, even though it’s really low because I still made errors.
“And I feel like you look at the leaderboard, there are a lot of guys that had opportunities and made a lot of birdies.
“It was just a really fun round. You don’t get many — I haven’t played that many — I don’t know that I’ve ever played a U.S. Open where I’ve had that much enjoyment.”
Tommy Fleetwood is well in the mix at five under while Andrew “Beef” Johnston was at his beaming best to be sharing 11th place with fellow Englishman Lee Westwood at three-under par.
“I always expect to come and do well so I really enjoyed it today,” he said.
“It was a course that kind suited my game. I always expect to do well. But coming back after my first U.S. Open last year at Oakmont, I have more experience this time. I know how everything works.
“Today I hit my irons lovely. I wouldn’t change any of the shots. I just need to drive it a bit better”.
Golf: Rory McIlroy says players shouldnt be complaining about the tough conditions.![]()
The Northern Irishman returned to Belfast for an MRI on an injured back on Monday ahead of next week’s tournament.
But McIlroy today confirmed he will be out of the tournament at Wentworth, saying: “Having had a reaction to my earlier rib injury, I have been advised to take a conservative approach to my recovery which unfortunately means I have to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship next week.
“It’s a disappointing decision to have to make, but I have to ensure I make a full recovery.
“I will now continue the process of preparing my game for the US Open and the rest of the season”.
He admitted to fears over a niggling injury after competing in last week’s Players Championship in Florida.
“I’ve been struggling with it a bit this week, sort of felt it for the first time on Sunday”, he said previously. “Then I’ve just sort of been managing it since.
“It’s OK, it’s manageable, it’s not, obviously not a hundred per cent but it’s good enough to get myself around here for the next couple of days.
But McIlroy will now have to sit out the tournament at Wentworth as he continues to recover.
Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour said: “There is no question that Rory will be missed at the BMW PGA Championship but his health is the most important thing and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
