Connor McDavid rewrote the record book this week by factoring in on the first 9 goals of the Oilers season. Rob Pizzo gives you a second look at his historical start to the season.
]]>
With Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews both off to hot starts to the NHL season, many hockey fans are choosing sides in a familiar debate: who's the best player in the world?
Watch our video on who has held the "best player" belt over the years:
Most (outside Toronto anyway) seem to favour McDavid, who set an NHL record by either scoring or assisting on each of his team's first nine goals to start the season. The 21-year-old Edmonton Oilers star has won the league scoring title two years running and took the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player in 2016-17.
Matthews, though, is making a strong case for himself. The 21-year-old leads the league in both goals (10) and points (16) and has recorded at least two points in each of the Maple Leafs' first seven games.
Still, the nod goes to McDavid, according to one very notable expert.
"I think McDavid has set himself apart just based on the awards and the accolades he's gotten and the consistency he's had," Sidney Crosby told NHL.com on Wednesday. "I think it's fair to say it's an easy pick just because of that.
"Matthews has emerged this year and it really looks like he's taken even another step. I think there's a lot of guys in the conversation. But it's hard to argue [against McDavid]. He's been really consistent. He's won scoring titles, MVPs. So yeah, that's an easy one to pick."
Crosby, of course, has enjoyed his own run as the consensus best player in hockey. The 31-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins captain has won three Stanley Cups, back-to-back Conn Smythe trophies as the playoff MVP, along with a pair of Harts. But he said he doesn't advocate for himself in any "best player" debate.
"[My motivation] is always to be my best," Crosby said. "That's allowed me to be in the conversation of the guys who are considered to be the best. I think that's the way I've always looked at it. I've always wanted to get the best out of myself. Wherever that puts me, that's where its put me."
]]>The Edmonton Oilers captain beat out Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon and New Jersey Devils winger Taylor Hall for the honour to kick off the NHL Awards in Las Vegas.
MacKinnon, Hall and Los Angeles Kings centre Anze Kopitar were in the running later in program for the Hart Trophy — the league MVP award voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.
McDavid got the nod for both the Hart and the Ted Lindsay last season.
He had 41 goals and 67 assists with a plus-20 rating in 82 games for Edmonton this season.
Gerard Gallant of the Vegas Golden Knights has won the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's top coach.
Gallant was an obvious choice over Colorado's Jared Bednar and Boston's Bruce Cassidy after he masterminded the most spectacular expansion season in recent sports history. The Golden Knights went 51-24-7 and handily won the Pacific Division before winning 13 postseason games and reaching the Stanley Cup Final in their first playoff campaign.
The 54-year-old Gallant was named the Golden Knights' first coach in April 2017, and the veteran NHL coach provided steady leadership while turning Vegas' expansion roster into a cohesive, motivated team. Gallant's players praised his steady, intelligent approach to the postseason, which ended in a five-game loss to the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals.
Gallant previously coached in Columbus and Florida, but his teams had never won a playoff round before Vegas' remarkable run.
Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne has won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie for the 2017-18 season.
The 35-year-old Finn took home the honour for the first time.
A finalist for the fourth time, Rinne beat out Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets and Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Hellebuyck, 24, and Vasilevskiy, 23, were both up for the award for the first time in their careers.
Rinne tied for third in the NHL with 42 wins, two back of both Hellebuyck and Vasilevskiy.
He also had eight shutouts to tie Vasilevskiy for first, ranked fifth in goals-against average (2.31), seventh in save percentage (927).
Rinne won 11 straight games from Feb. 19 to March 19 as Nashville claimed its first Presidents' Trophy for the best regular-season record to go along with new franchise highs for wins (53) and points (117).
Victor Hedman has his first Norris Trophy.
The Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman took home the honour as the NHL's top blue liner for the 2017-18 regular season at Wednesday's awards show.
Hedman scored 17 goals — a personal best — this season to finish in a three-way tie for first among the league's defencemen.
The 27-year-old Swede added 46 assists for his second 60-plus point season after finishing third in Norris voting last year.

Hedman beat out Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings and P.K. Subban of the Nashville Predators.
A finalist for the fourth time, Doughty had a career-high 60 points (10 goals, 50 assists) and led the NHL in average ice time (26:50). The 28-year-old won the Norris in 2016.
Subban, also 28, had a career-high 16 goals and was one point shy of his hitting 60 for the second time in his career. A finalist for the third time, he won the Norris in 2013.
Mathew Barzal has won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
The speedy New York Islanders centre beat out Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser and Arizona Coyotes centre Clayton Keller.
The 16th pick in the 2015 draft, Barzal led all rookies with 85 points (22 goals, 63 assists) — 20 more than Keller, who was the next closest first-year player.
Barzal, 21, became the seventh rookie in NHL history with at least 20 goals and 60 assists, and just the second to record three five-point games.
Boeser finished second among rookies in goals (29) and fifth in points (55) in just 62 games. The 21-year-old's season was cut short in early March after he suffered a back injury.
Keller, 19, had 65 points (23 goals, 42 assists), second among NHL rookies and most by a first-year member of the Coyotes since the franchise relocated from Winnipeg to Arizona in 1996.
For the second time, Vancouver's Henrik Sedin won the King Clancy Trophy. But this year, brother and teammate Daniel Sedin joined in the honours.
The Sedin twins shared the honour bestowed upon a player for leadership and humanitarian contributions to hockey.
They announced their retirement after the 2017-18 season following 17 seasons with the Canucks.
Vegas Golden Knights forward William Karlsson has won the Lady Byng Trophy as the player best combining sportsmanship and ability.
After Columbus made a deal with Vegas to take Karlsson off its hands in the expansion draft, the talented Swede had a breakthrough season for the expansion Golden Knights, racking up 43 goals and 35 assists with only 12 penalty minutes. Karlsson had never scored more than 25 points in any of his three previous NHL seasons with Anaheim and the Blue Jackets.

"Who would have thought?" Karlsson said with a smile after picking up his award.
Karlsson's trophy is the first individual player honour earned by the Golden Knights. Coach Gerard Gallant, general manager George McPhee and defenceman Deryk Engelland are also up for awards later in the ceremony in the Knights' hometown.
Los Angeles Kings centre Anze Kopitar won his second Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward.
The 30-year-old Kopitar was nominated for the fourth time in five seasons, and won his only Selke in 2016.
Kopitar beat out Boston Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron and Sean Couturier of the Philadelphia Flyers.
A finalist for a record seventh consecutive year, passing Pavel Datsyuk's six-season run from 2008 to 2013, Bergeron was looking for a record fifth Selke Trophy.
Couturier, 25, was up for the award for the first time.
Montreal Canadiens great Bob Gainey won the award four times between 1978 and 1981.
New Jersey's Brian Boyle has won the Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication to hockey.
The other finalists were Florida's Roberto Luongo and Carolina's Jordan Staal.
The 33-year-old Boyle was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia during training camp, but he made it back into the Devils' lineup in November and eventually represented New Jersey at the All-Star game after teammate Taylor Hall couldn't go because of injury.
Boyle put together an outstanding season even while his 2-year-old son, Declan, also had significant health problems.

After having trouble scoring at 5-on-5, Connor McDavid and the Canadians proved to be deadly at 3-on-3.
McDavid scored 46 seconds into overtime, batting his own rebound out of the air past Latvia goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis, as Canada edged Latvia 2-1 Monday and clinched a quarterfinal berth at the world hockey championship.
The combination of McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Aaron Ekblad dominated play at 3-on-3 in the overtime session as Canada got two much-needed points.
"Those guys are so deadly with the puck, especially with Connor's speed," said Canadian forward Ryan O'Reilly. "The way he beats the guy up the wall and creates a scoring chance and ends the game, it's definitely dangerous. That was huge, getting that goal."
Anthony Beauvillier opened the scoring for Canada 2:51 into the first period, staying with the play to shovel in a loose puck after Gudlevskis failed to completely freeze a tip in front of the net by Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
"I thought the play was dead, then I saw the puck behind his pads, so I was just trying to find it," said Beauvillier on his second goal of the tournament. "It was probably one of the easiest goals I've scored in my career."
Beauvillier skated on a line with Pageau and Mat Barzal as coach Bill Peters shuffled his units in an effort to spark more offence after a disappointing 5-1 loss to Finland on Saturday.
"I thought it was a mixed bag," said Peters about the changes. "We're still trying to find the right combinations. Tyson Jost went in there and played well — I thought that line [with Bo Horvat and Jordan Eberle] was good. I thought the Barzal line probably had their best game of the tournament.
"I thought those two lines were dangerous for us on a consistent basis. Now we've got to get contributions from others throughout the lineup."
After being outplayed and outshot 10-4 in the first period, the hardworking Latvians applied good pressure in the second. Close-checking at the defensive end of the ice, Latvia also drew two penalties and fired nine shots on goal in a scoreless middle frame.
"They played us really hard," said goaltender Darcy Kuemper. "They worked their butts off and didn't give up a whole lot."
Kuemper was sharp through two periods in his first start since Canada's tournament-opening 5-4 shootout loss to the United States on May 4, but was beaten 1:50 into the third on a Kristian Rubins point shot, Latvia's 14th of the game.
"I just picked it up a little bit late," Kuemper said. "[Rubins] shot it and I didn't have good eyes on it. I saw it last second, just got a piece of it and it snuck through."
Thomas Chabot, who was scratched to make room for Marc-Edouard Vlasic in Canada's loss to Finland, returned to the lineup on Monday to anchor the first power-play unit, while Ryan Pulock was scratched on defence.
In the late stages of the third, Canada turned up the aggression, jamming the net in front of Gudlevskis, who was making just his second start of the tournament after giving up eight goals to Finland on May 6. Canada outshot Latvia 9-2 in the third and 31-15 through regulation, but extra time was needed to decide the winner.
Forward Kyle Turris was added to Canada's roster after his Nashville Predators were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs, but did not suit up on Monday. He could see action in Canada's final round-robin game against Germany on Tuesday. Pierre-Luc Dubois did not dress against Latvia due to a lower-body injury. He's listed as day-to-day.
With Monday's win, Canada is guaranteed a top-four finish in Group B and a quarterfinal berth. Canada could finish anywhere from second to fourth in Group B, depending on the outcome against Germany and the results of Tuesday's two other games: Finland versus the United States and Denmark versus Latvia.
In Tuesday's late game in Herning, the hosts from Denmark will meet Latvia to determine the fourth quarterfinalist.
Norway beat South Korea 3-0 in Monday's other Group B game. Both teams had already been eliminated from playoff contention.
In Group A action in Copenhagen on Monday, Russia beat Slovakia 4-0 and the Czech Republic beat Austria 4-3.
]]>What it won’t show are five words the young superstar uttered in the locker room afterward, his hair still damp from the shower, his face still rouged from the exertion of an extraordinarily entertaining game his team had just lost 2-1 in overtime.
“We’ve just got to relax,” he said.
It seems a simple thing, but the phrase cuts directly to the heart of the matter.
With those five words, McDavid put a stethoscope to the recurring malady that has plagued the Edmonton Oilers for the past seven games: an offence with a barely perceptible pulse.
The Oilers will return home from this three-game road trip with one win, one regulation-time loss and one overtime loss.
When they left Edmonton they were walking wounded, with frail goaltending, a shaky defence and a sputtering offence.
Away from home, they cured some of those ills.
As Meatloaf once said, two out of three ain’t bad.
While away from home, goaltender Cam Talbot found his game, and the defence suddenly remembered how to play in front of him.
Over three games in Chicago, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, they surrendered a measly five goals.
But the offence scored only four. Even students of the “New Math” know that ain’t good.
Four goals in three games table scraps. They’ve been surviving, barely, on the same starvation diet for seven games now.
So this condition, for the moment, appears to have become chronic.
The Oilers have fired 302 shots on goal in eight games this season. They’ve scored 15 times.
A team shooting percentage of 4.9 per cent is half what it should be.
Last season, that percentage was 9.54.
Hip Check: Talbot and Murray overshadow hyped McDavid vs. Crosby showdown0:53
When pucks aren’t going in, several things happen. Players are reluctant to shoot when they should. They try to make perfect shots and miss by inches. They hesitate. They second-guess.
Confident players just rip it at the net. Goals build confidence, which leads to more goals. And so on.
You get the sense that if these guys just keep shooting, if they “relax” and trust their skills, pucks will start going in.
But enough of that – time to talk about what went right.
For starters, Talbot played brilliantly, again, in Pittsburgh.
Over a span of more than two periods, he stopped every shot he saw, and some he didn’t. He was finally beaten on a wrist shot by Ian Cole that threaded its way through a congregation gathered in front of the net.
But Matt Murray played copycat at the other end of the rink, and matched him save for save — until McDavid beat him with a wicked wrist shot, high glove-side, to tie the score with three minutes left in the third period.
The Penguins won the game on a Phil Kessel goal, 42 seconds into overtime.

The inquisition began while the red light behind Talbot was still flashing.
Fans on Twitter and radio call-in shows wanted to know why the less-than-fleet-footed Milan Lucic was on the ice in 3-3 overtime.
A lumbering power forward, whose strength is best displayed during combat along the boards and in the corners, Lucic was part of the second Oilers trio over the boards in the extra period. He and linemate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins broke in on the Penguins net but missed on their chance, which created, as it often does, an odd-man rush the other way.
As Evgeni Malkin lugged the puck into the Oilers’ zone, Lucic and Nugent-Hopkins skated hard to get back. They weren’t fast enough. Malkin slipped a pass across to Kessel, who fired the winner home.
No one can fault the Oilers’ effort on Tuesday night, or in the two previous road games.
They continue to generate scads of scoring chances.
Mark Letestu had the best one Tuesday evening, and missed a goal by precisely 3.5 inches. After a perfect pass, he faced a gaping net. But a desperate Murray reached out with his stick, 3.5 inches wide at the paddle, and guess what the puck hit?
That pucks goes in 99 out of 100 times.
Oilers coach Todd McLellan said he liked his team’s overall effort. He was pleased his players appear to have cleaned up the defensive lapses that plagued the team at home last week against Winnipeg and Carolina. The next step, he said, will be to find some anti-venom for a snakebitten offence.
Asked about his team’s scoring woes, he offered his own expert diagnosis.
“It’s almost like we’re squeezing it so tight that we ether pause or we shoot it a little too quick,” he said.
Which was exactly what his captain said, in five well-chosen words.
Great minds think alike.
The Oilers return home to play the Dallas Stars on Thursday and the Washington Capitals on Saturday — both teams that can score goals in bunches.
]]>
Two goalies combine for 71 saves in Pittsburgh’s overtime win.
]]>The Pittsburgh forward raced down the slot and beat goalie Cam Talbot 42 seconds into overtime to give the Penguins a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.
Ian Cole scored his first goal of the season for the Penguins, and Matt Murray stopped 29 shots. Crosby was held without a point in his showdown with McDavid, but the Penguins rode their depth to keep the struggling Oilers in check.
Game Wrap: Phil Kessel steals the show in Crosby vs McDavid duel1:38
McDavid forced the extra period with his first goal in seven games, a wrist shot with 2:53 left in regulation that tied it. Talbot played brilliantly at times while making 42 saves but couldn’t get a handle on Kessel’s winner.
The central figures in the biannual meeting between the best players of their respective generations tried to downplay the hype. Probably a good idea. For all the star wattage Crosby and McDavid bring, their respective teams have spent the opening weeks of the season trying to figure things out.
Edmonton is trying to build off the franchise’s first playoff appearance in 11 years but came in as the lowest-scoring team in the Western Conference, averaging all of two goals a game.

The Penguins have been wildly erratic as they eye becoming the first team in 35 years to win three straight Stanley Cups. The first three weeks included a 10-1 loss to Chicago and a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Tampa Bay, performances that cost backup goalie Antti Niemi his job. The Penguins waived him on Monday and called up rookie Casey DeSmith to serve as Murray’s understudy. Pittsburgh also acquired Riley Sheahan from Detroit and tasked him with anchoring the third line in the same way Nick Bonino did so effectively before signing with Nashville over the summer.
There was a definitive buzz — at least what passes for buzz in October — as Crosby and McDavid skated to centre ice for the opening faceoff. But both players, and just about everyone else, spent most of the night being stoned by the goalies.
Talbot stuck out his left pad to stuff Kessel on a wide-open backhand early in the second to keep the game scoreless. Murray put together a dazzling sequence later in the period, sticking his paddle out to knock Mark Letestu’s shot out of harm’s way. The sequence ended with Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin scrambling to the goalmouth to knock away a flip to the open net by McDavid.

Cole, wearing a full shield for extra protection after losing several teeth when he blocked a shot with them earlier this month, beat Talbot with a wrist shot that zipped by Talbot’s blocker 3:24 into the third. Sheahan picked up the secondary assist for his first career point for someone other than the Red Wings.
It appeared that might be enough until McDavid, at the end of a long shift, found one last burst. He extended to catch up with a pass and fired a wrist shot from the left circle over Murray’s glove.
Pittsburgh defenceman Justin Schultz left in the first period after getting tripped by Edmonton’s Drake Caggiula and did not return.

The fan in Connor McDavid comes out whenever he sees Sidney Crosby’s familiar No. 87 on TV.
“When you’re watching, you’re hoping for him to do something cool,” the Edmonton Oilers star said.
Defending one of his childhood idols is another matter entirely. McDavid will get an up-close look when the Oilers visit Crosby and the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
“If you want to model yourself after someone, I think he’s as good a guy as you can get,” said McDavid, who has three goals and five assists through seven games. “He’s won just about anything there is to win in hockey: individual awards, team awards. You name it, he’s got it. If you’re a young guy like me, that’s what you want to do with your career.”
Hip Check: McDavid protects the puck for incredible assist0:39
While Crosby totally gets why sharing the ice with McDavid is a thing, he’d rather not talk about it.
“I think there’s always matchups, storylines and things like that … but we’re just going to go out there and play,” said Crosby, who has five goals and five assists.
At the moment, Crosby and the Penguins have more pressing matters than the hype that accompanies the biannual meeting between two of the NHL’s brightest lights.
The Penguins placed goaltender Antti Niemi on waivers on Monday just three games into his tenure as Matt Murray’s backup, called up rookie Casey DeSmith from their AHL affiliate in Wilkes Barre/Scranton and acquired forward Riley Sheahan from Detroit over the weekend to address their need for a third-line centre. The Oilers, meanwhile, are off to a slow start following their first playoff appearance in more than a decade.
Pittsburgh swept Edmonton last season, a testament to the depth around Crosby. Crosby was held without a point while McDavid had a goal and three assists in the two games.
“They were two really, really entertaining games,” McDavid said. “Obviously you hope for that and hope for a better result.”
Hip Check: Sidney Crosby’s hockey IQ is off the charts0:44
The 30-year-old Crosby and the 20-year-old McDavid are separated by a decade but little else.
They finished one-two in Hart Trophy voting last year, with McDavid and his league-leading 100 points edging Crosby and his NHL-high 44 goals. For a while last spring it appeared they were on a collision course for the Stanley Cup Final until the Oilers blew a 3-1 lead against Anaheim in the second round.
It’s not unlike the path Crosby and the Penguins followed shortly after he made his NHL debut in 2005. Pittsburgh reached the post-season in Crosby’s second year. The Penguins reached the Cup final in his third year. In his fourth, he raised the Cup with the franchise’s third championship.
“I can only speak of my experience, going to the final and losing was a really good experience for us as a group,” Crosby said. “Going through that it’s something you learn through.”
The Oilers are hoping last spring can serve as a launching pad for McDavid, whose vision and speed make him a nightmare matchup for anyone tasked with trying to keep up. The responsibility will fall largely on Pittsburgh defenceman Kris Letang, who should see plenty of McDavid’s No. 97 on Tuesday.
“I just think what’s tough for a defenceman is sometimes a guy can go fast in a straight line and he doesn’t have his head up, he’s just worried about beating you wide,” said Letang, one of the fastest skaters in the league. “This guy is like looking straight into your eyes and he’s going full speed so you’re like “Oh [no], what is he going to do?'”
Asked to compare McDavid’s quickness to another player outside his own dressing room, Letang responded: “No one is near that guy.”
Oilers coach Todd McLellan will try to find a balance between figuring out a way to steer his team out of its early funk while also appreciating the special talent on the ice.
“It will come down to team play but you do appreciate as a coach, a fan, even a player, their skill set and what they brought to their teams and their communities,” McLellan said. “Even off the rink, both of them are tremendous that way. It’s fun when they’re together.”
]]>At first, just vague mumblings out of the annual BioSteel Camp, where NHL players hit the ice and the weight room before official training season starts in September.
Some reporters found themselves wondering if Connor McDavid didn’t look, if possible, faster than he had been last season.
The first thought on hearing the news was: How is that even possible?
The hockey world, and the defencemen on 30 other NHL teams, anxiously awaited confirmation.
It came Wednesday night, during the Oilers season opener at Rogers Place, when McDavid proved to the world he has another, otherworldly, gear.
On his first shift, 29 seconds into the game, McDavid took a little pass from Leon Draisaitl at the Oilers blue-line and the track meet began. Flames defenceman Dougie Hamilton found himself too close to McDavid. His partner, T.J. Brodie, was already turning to skate back into his own zone.
A second later, with McDavid accelerating, Hamilton was already out of the play.
Another second later, at the opposing blue-line, the Oilers captain blew through the gap between the two Flames and went in alone on goalie Mike Smith, who made a great pad save.
Minutes later, McDavid beat Smith on a nifty pass from Draisaitl, and the Oilers led 1-0.
Yet, despite the speed and the unreal acceleration, McDavid’s play looked like so many others fans have seen over the past two seasons.
Connor McDavid became the first player in franchise history to score three goals on opening night as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 3-0. (Jason Franson/Canadian Press)
Between periods, Sportsnet host Daren Millard brought up the subject immediately.
“There’s a feeling out there,” he said, “That Connor McDavid is actually faster than he was last year.”
“Well,” said panelist Doug MacLean, “If that’s the case, he’s not skating anymore. He’s airborne.”
MacLean then summed up what that would mean.
“Most defense corps around the league are hoping that is not the case. But I’ll tell you what, there’s evidence tonight that he’s as fast, or faster, than he was last year.”
Those defencemen, the guys on the other 30 NHL teams, had their hopes dashed around the eight minute mark of the third period.
With the score unchanged and the play deep in the Oilers zone, the puck popped loose and McDavid scooped it up along the half-wall and turned on the jets.
He crossed his own blue-line. The same defencemen he had burned in the first period were on the ice. Brodie was already in no-man’s land between the blue-line and centre-ice. Hamilton was further back, close to the red-line.
Both are good skaters. These aren’t exactly slow guys.
But it was already over.
By the time McDavid blurred past centre ice, Brodie was done.
Against any other player, Hamilton might still have had a chance.
In this case, nah, no chance. None.
McDavid was in the clear, swooped in on goal, and lifted the puck over Smith’s left shoulder.
Oilers 2, Flames 0.
And with that, the rumours from the summer ceased to be rumors.
Wondering how McDavid’s speed compares to other speedsters (and some slowpokes)? (CBC)
A third goal to complete the hat trick came in the dying minutes of the game, and gave Oilers fans the chance to litter the ice with ball caps.
After the game, coach Todd McLellan was asked about McDavid’s speed and found himself, once again, trying to explain the inexplicable.
“You guys keep asking me these questions,” he said. “I know you want answers. But it’s what he does. He doesn’t go from first to second, to third to fourth gear. He just goes from first to fourth gear, and he’s gone.”
A fitting description. But by no means an explanation.
Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom, too, was asked for his perspective.
“I know exactly how those defensemen feel in Calgary right now,” he said. “I play against Connor every single day in practice. It’s tough, because he makes you look silly.”
It was McLellan who had to try to answer the questions posed over the summer.
“Could he possibly,” a reporter asked, “be faster than he was last year?”
The coach hesitated, pondering.
“Well, Connor has to improve,” he finally said. “Why not get faster?”
Indeed. Just what NHL defencemen wanted to hear.
]]>When Sidney Crosby stayed on the ice late after practice, Marc-Andre Fleury saw the best player in the world constantly looking to improve.
But who is the best player in the world right now? McDavid led the Edmonton Oilers to the playoffs and the league in scoring last season while winning the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award as MVP. Crosby scored the most goals and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP for the second consecutive year in pushing the Pittsburgh Penguins to back-back Stanley Cup titles.
“Crosby or McDavid,” Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Seth Jones said. “I think McDavid is what Crosby was when he was 20. … Obviously they’re the best two players in the world.”
An Associated Press survey of 30 of the NHL’s top players gave the nod to Crosby. When the players were asked to pick the best player in hockey, excluding current teammates, Crosby received 21 votes, McDavid six and Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson one. Two players couldn’t choose between Crosby and McDavid and one said there were too many good choices to pick one.
Crosby spent the first decade of his career being compared to Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin, the best goal-scorer of this generation, because they entered the league together. Now No. 87 will spend the next several years fending off comparisons to No. 97 because even the players who picked Crosby know McDavid is on his heels.
“I think you’ve got to say Crosby because of his resume and the year he had last year, what he did in the playoffs the year before, what he did in the World Cup, where his game’s at right now,” three-time Cup winner Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks said. “But it’s tough to pick against McDavid, too. He’s just an explosive player. Just kind of watching him last year, he kind of floats around a little bit and then he’s just gone and he’s got a scoring chance and it’s just like, ‘How did that happen so quickly?’ It’s between them two.”
Crosby’s accomplishments and work ethic make him respected if not revered around the league. In addition to his three Cup rings, Crosby has two Olympic gold medals and won the Hart Trophy twice.
“What more can you ask of Crosby?” San Jose Sharks goaltender Martin Jones wondered.
But the mantle of best player in the game right now isn’t a lifetime achievement award. That’s OK: Crosby just turned 30 and scored 44 goals, the second most in his career, and players still see him still in his prime.
“Every year he brings something new to the table and tries to improve,” Montreal Canadiens forward Jonathan Drouin said. “Even though he’s getting a little bit older, every year he seems to get an edge on something or get better at something.”
Winnipeg Jets centre Mark Scheifele gained more respect for Crosby during the playoffs, and he and others say the Penguins captain is the best around at making his teammates better and coming up big when it matters most.
“He’s proven that in big-time games in the last two years especially that he can perform,” New York Rangers defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk said. “I know a lot of people love Connor McDavid, but I think Sid is at the peak of his career and someone who has lived up to every expectation that he’s been given.”
McDavid says he models his skating style after Crosby. (Gene J. Puskar/The Associated Press)
“Sid the Kid” was considered the heir to Wayne Gretzky well before he was the first pick in 2005. Concussions cost him almost two full seasons’ worth of games in his prime, and Crosby still has 1,027 points.
“You look at Sid and how much he was injured there and what he could’ve done if he wasn’t injured,” Los Angeles Kings forward Tanner Pearson said. “It could be scary what his stats could really actually be like if he was healthy that whole time.”
McDavid missed half his rookie year with a broken collarbone but didn’t lose a step. The NHL’s only 100-point player last season is so fast that his contemporaries marvel at how quickly the 20-year-old can do everything on the ice.
“He was coming at high speed, and he almost ran into me just stickhandling,” Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask said. “I had to tell him, ‘Hey, slow down kid, don’t run me over,’ because he just skates and he stickhandles and it’s something I’ve never seen before as a goalie.”
McDavid skates a little like Crosby and said, “If you want to model yourself after someone, I think he’s as good a guy as you can get.” He also has a little bit of Crosby in him that he sees plays most others can’t envision and executes them before a lot of opponents realize it.
“His speed is such a weapon that it’s insane, but no one realizes how smart he is as a player,” Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere said. “He’s thinking two or three plays ahead of everyone. It actually is amazing to see how he thinks the game and how good he is.”
Crosby is the best, but several players said McDavid is on the cutting edge of revolutionizing hockey. Kane said the Oilers captain’s 2016-17 performance made a lot of other players train to get faster in the off-season.
Speed is the future of hockey with McDavid leading the way.
“Connor’s that next generation, the way hockey’s going: that full-speed game at all times,” Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby said. “You can see young kids are being taught that, and I think he’s the poster child for it.”
