FLEETWOOD MAC: Rumours (Warner) My mum played this when I was growing up. I remember being aware of the emotion behind the music. I was fascinated by Stevie Nicks and fell a bit in love with Lindsey Buckingham. My hubby has curly hair and a beard so it was definitely an influence. BARBRA STREISAND: Love Songs (Columbia) Growing up she was my hero, along with Stevie Nicks. Strong, sassy women with amazing, distinctive voices. I was fascinated by the cover photo. She was mesmerising, not a typical beauty. EAGLES: The Very Best Of The Eagles (Rhino) In Peaceful Easy Feeling the lyrics include: “I like the way your sparkling earrings lay”. It’s so descriptive. It reminds me of hot summer days, windows open and Mum cooking as we sang along. KENNY ROGERS: The Gambler (Originals) My mum had an old red Cortina and we’d drive to Clacton for caravan holidays with this on. It’s fantastic storytelling. I loved his voice and thought he looked like Father Christmas. KINGS OF LEON: Only By The Night (RCA/Sony) This broke the mould with its raw raunchiness but it’s also melodic. It reminds me of seeing them and of getting dressed up to go out. Me and the girls would sing along to Sex On Fire with our straighteners and rollers in. PRINCE: The Very Best Of Prince (Warner) When he sang Purple Rain, it was the first time I cried when I saw a performance on video. It moved me so much as a child. The guitar solo still gets me. I found him intriguing because he was feminine and beautiful. I wanted to be Diamond or Pearl, his two girl singers, and we put stick-on diamonds on our bra tops but they kept pinging off. The musician and actress released three albums between 1999 and 2002, and enjoyed a string of hit singles including Perfect Moment, I’m Over You and On The Radio. However the star fell incredibly ill with ME, effectively drawing her career to a halt. Now, 15 years after her last release, she’s about to bring out Lost And Found, preceded by the single Say I’m Not Alone. “I never forgot or fell out of love with music, I just couldn’t do it,” she said. “You re-evaluate what matters when you get unwell and hit rock bottom. “So you focus on getting yourself well, because without that you can’t do anything. So it took a long time, it was years and years of patching things up and getting things better. “Most importantly, until I knew my body was strong, I wouldn’t be able to have a baby. So that was my priority in that time, and during that time I wrote songs – that’s how Lost And Found kind of came about.” The record is a personal and honest endeavour for the 41-year-old, but the reaction from listeners has so far been very encouraging. She added: “I was nervous because I thought, ‘oh God, it’s all out there now’ – but it’s funny because the reaction has been brilliant. You think it’s just you going through hellish times but so many people identify in their own way.” Having shot to fame on EastEnders and then pulled off a seamless transition into pop, McCutcheon was one of the country’s brightest young stars at the turn of the century, and says now that the “excitement and adrenaline” of that time helped to counterbalance the tougher aspects of enormous fame. “The excitement and adrenaline and innocence sees you through,” she admitted. “It’s such an exciting time, but you’re in fight or flight mode – you’re constantly on. “Because you’re so young, they go, ‘oh she can handle the schedule’ – in different time zones, you don’t know if you should be asleep or awake or singing…! “I look back on it with fond memories. The only thing I wish I’d had was a great, consistent manager who protected me and had my back through a lot of stuff. When you’re young, you need that.” Say I’m Not Alone recently picked up A-list support from BBC Radio 2, and the one-time Tiffany Mitchell laughed as she recalled the first time she heard it on the air. She said: “I was in a taxi and I was on my own to do interviews, and I was like, ‘this is my song! This is my song!’, and the cab driver was like, ‘no’. He looked at me like, ‘you’re strange’. “And I put my Instagram on and I did a video and I was just trying to play it cool. And he’s looking at me in the rear view mirror like, ‘what the hell are you doing?’. “But it’s the funniest thing because you can see I’m dying to burst but I just can’t! It was really a lovely feeling when I first heard it.” Lost And Found by Martine McCutcheon is out on August 11. She’s also touring later this year. Actress Martine McCutcheon knows a thing or two about the value of good health. After years of battling illness which drove her into a deep depression, the mum of one, 41, now makes looking after her wellbeing a top priority. “When your health goes, you just lose so much which is why I put so much work into staying as well as possible,” says Martine, who is best known for appearing in TV’s EastEnders and box-office hit film Love Actually. The popular Loose Women panellist has opened up in recent months about her long battles with depression, ME and Lyme disease. And she credits her son Rafferty, two, and husband, singer songwriter Jack McManus, with giving her the happiness she has always craved and the incentive to get her health back on track. The star has been plagued by health problems over the years “I absolutely love motherhood, it’s the best thing in the world,” she says. Martine became a household name after joining EastEnders in 1995 to play Tiffany Mitchell and her character’s death on New Year’s Eve in 1998 was watched by 22 million viewers, turning her into a household name. She went on to launch a successful pop career with six top 10 singles, including her No 1 hit Perfect Moment. Yet in the years that followed, a series of illnesses, miscarriages and then bankruptcy all took their toll on her health. At the time she said: “I’ve had the worst seven years ever. Life felt like hell every day. It has just been one thing after another. I have not been in a nice place in my head, financially nor with my career.” In 2011 Martine was diagnosed with ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), a long-term, fluctuating, neurological condition that affects the nervous and immune systems, which at its worst left her confined to a wheelchair and unable to work. Then a few years ago she developed Lyme disease, which is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks, tiny bugs that can be as small as a poppy seed. Martine believes she may have been bitten after lying on the grass in Richmond Park in south west London which is home to deer and foxes, which both carry ticks.
The key to regaining her health was plenty of fresh air and exercise “I visited the doctor a few days later because I felt really tired and lethargic. It was only afterwards I found a massive circular rash on my back, like a dartboard,” she says. Some people with early-stage Lyme disease develop the distinctive circular rash at the site of the tick bite, usually between three and 30 days after being bitten. The disease can cause flu-like symptoms in the early stages, such as tiredness, muscle pain, headaches, fever, chills and neck stiffness. Bella Hadid and her mother Yolanda, Kelly Osbourne and Avril Lavigne all have the condition. If treated early with antibiotics, it can be cured. Left untreated, it becomes chronic. More serious symptoms which may develop several weeks, months or even years later, include pain and swelling of the joints, problems affecting the nervous system, facial paralysis, memory problems and difficulty concentrating. Martine says that the key to regaining her health and energy levels was to get back to basics by revamping her diet to include fresh, healthy foods and plenty of fresh air and exercise. Although Lyme disease can play havoc with her weight, she recently lost a stone by following the Cambridge Weight Plan, a diet that consists of meal replacement bars and shakes and now keeps trim by eating sensibly. “Since I need to get through until lunchtime, I usually start the day with porridge,” she explains. With Love Actually co-star Hugh Grant “I also swear by green juice, which I make at least once a day using spinach, cucumber, celery and a green apple to sweeten it. I might wake up feeling sore and aching but green juice keeps those aches away and I wouldn’t be without it now. “I know now that if you’re living on adrenaline and keeping going on coffee and energy drinks, not eating proper meals and having too much sugar, it can make you feel unwell. “Now I’m a great believer in back to basics – fresh fruit and vegetables, almonds and a good meal with protein and fresh vegetables to look forward to in the evening.” She also follows a regular programme of gym visits and energetic walks. “Since we live in Surrey, we love going for long walks in the hills,” she says. “And having a good brisk walk to the station when I’m going to London means I can easily rack up 9,000 steps a day without realising I’m exercising.” One potential future issue she is keen to keep an eye on is high cholesterol. “It runs in my family,” explains Martine. “My mum has it and so does my auntie and younger brother Laurence – so I’m horribly aware that it might one day be a problem for me too. My mum has diabetes and when there is diabetes in the family you need to keep your cholesterol levels down.” Cholesterol is a fatty substance which is mainly made by the liver, and is vital for the body to function normally. Yet high levels can build up in the arteries, leading to them narrowing, which can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. Blood cholesterol is measured in units called millimoles per litre of blood, often shortened to mmol/L. When she last had her levels checked Martine’s was 4.5mmol/L – below the recommended level of 5mmol/L or less for healthy adults but above the level of 4mmol/L or less which is recommended for those at high risk. Doctors usually recommend the first step in reducing cholesterol is to switch to a low-fat diet, take exercise and give up smoking. If these measures don’t work, a cholesterol-lowering medication such as a statin may be prescribed. Alongside her healthy diet, Martine started eating Betavivo, a special cholesterol-lowering cereal that contains beta-glucans and plant sterols which occur naturally in plant-based foods. “My mum spotted them and volunteered to help me take them too – she said she was the one with the problem, because her cholesterol levels are up at seven,” says Martine who next month releases her first album in 17 years. “We know so much more about food and healthy eating now than we did 30 years ago and it’s so easy to eat healthily and avoid processed food. My mum wishes she’d started years ago. “After years of ill health I’m finally feeling energetic and healthy and have so many projects on the go, as well as keeping up with Rafferty.” Betavivo costs £14.99 (for 15 sachets) from Holland & Barrett, boots.com and Lloyds Pharmacy, or visit betavivo.co.uk.

THE EastEnders and Loose Women star has been plagued by health problems over the years. She tells our writer how she has battled her way back to fitness.![]()
The 40-year-old Love Actually star had her food nightmares come true when she was served up tuna steak with olive and tomato salsa and a rocket salad.
“I’m really really getting worried about this now,” she said, as presenter Donal Skehan plated up the dish.
Robbed of the treat of her food heaven – chocolate and hazelnut semifreddo – she seemed very reluctant to taste the dish, as Donal insisted: “Martine, you have to try this it’s part of the show!”
BBC viewers watched in amusement as Martine dubiously picked at the tuna with her fork, selecting a small chunk with the finest helping of olives she could, before tentatively tasting it.
“She’s not retching,” Donal laughed. “So that’s a good sign!”
Wincing as she washed it down with a generous gulp of wine, she conceded: “That’s the best version of it I had but I won’t be having it again in a hurry.”
A number of viewers then rushed to Twitter to brand Martine “rude” for the snub, with watcher blasting: “Why do people go on your show when they obviously hate food, Martine was so rude refusing to eat the tuna.”
Another said she “behaved like a child” when she was forced to try the tuna.
However, others responded by commenting that they thought she had eaten the food hell “with good grace”.
Some viewers were certainly more sympathetic towards Martine, with one saying: “Poor Martine. That dish was everything she hated. An awful thing to be put through.”
Another added: “Well Martine has eaten it and well done to her.”
One of the Saturday Kitchen producers, however, revealed that she had actually also been given the food heaven after the show.
Posting a snap of Martine and Donal with the huge dessert, crew member Amanda Ross said: “We gave her heaven on #SaturdayKitchen after the show!”
Saturday Kitchen continues next Saturday at 10am on BBC One.
The hit film is returning to our screens for a Red Nose Day Special, with the likes of Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Kiera Knightly, Andrew Lincoln, Bill Nighy and Colin Firth all confirmed to be reprising their cherished roles.
In tweets posted by scriptwriter Emma Freud, it has been announced that 56-year-old Grant’s character, Prime Minister David, is in fact married to his love interest Natalie, played by 40-year-old McCutcheon.
Revealing the major storyline, the scriptwriter posted a snap of Grant accompanied by McCutcheon on the set of the charity revival.
“Our pm is still married. And she’s still lovely. #rednosedayactually,” said Freud, before adding: “The PM, his wife and the writer who never worked out a good camera face. #rednosedayactually,” accompanied by a picture of director Richard Curtis.
Freud later continued: “And here he is. Our Prime Minister. Again. And still hot. #rednosedayactually,” accompanied by a picture of Grant.
Still together 14 years after the original film, the Prime Minister and love interest Natalie are still very much an item.
Confirming that Natalie is married to David after they were seen to get together in the original film, could this be the plot of the Comic Relief special?
McCutcheon posted: “Had my fitting for @comicrelief today… aaaah it was so nice to see some of the gang again. I’m rather excited to film my little bit!”
Elsewhere, Susanna Reid confirmed that she will play herself covering a press conference at 10 Downing Street when the Prime Minister delivers a speech to the gathered members of the media.
Following the filming, Reid posted: “So great to spend the morning behind the scenes with Richard Curtis – director of The. Best. Christmas. Film. Ever.”
Red Nose Actually will air on BBC One on Friday 24 March.
The former EastEnders star and the rest of the panel – which comprised of Ruth Langsford, Penny Lancaster and Linda Robson – were talking about the emergence of a video which showed a young lady being cat-called by two men in a van.
When the woman told the unidentified men to stop making such inappropriate remarks, one of which saw them ask if she was “on her period”, she was then the victim of a tyrant of abuse, reminding Martine, 40, of a similarly horrible fate she once suffered.
“I lived in South Kensington at the time, I had a little flat there. I was walking past the Natural History Museum and this car with a foreign number plate drove past me,” she began.
“They started shouting violent sexual comments about what they were going to do to me, then another one would say something.
“As I went to tell them to go away one of them got hold of my coat collar and grabbed me. I was worried if I tried to pull away and they stopped that the wheels would go over my feet.”
Clearly still haunted by the ordeal, she continued: “I thought, ‘This is it. They’re going to drag me in their car and do whatever they’re going to do to me’.”
Out of nowhere, Martine revealed that a black cab driver pulled around the corner and stopped in front of the car.
“He said, ‘Stay there!’ and then got hold of the guy by the collar and said, ‘Who do you think you are? Don’t you dare do that to anybody’.
“They then drove off and he took me to a petrol garage and got me a can of Coke and made sure I was OK. He then took me to my friend’s party and when I offered him money he didn’t want it, even though I was quite well-known at the time.”
The incident prompted Ruth to recount a scary experience she suffered at the hands of a male driver, admitting that a man once threatened to ram her off of the road and shouted expletives at her when she was heavily pregnant.
She divulged: “I was very heavily pregnant, I was at the traffic lights in one of those lanes that filters off.
“Half a second I hadn’t pulled off man in the van beeped. I drove off and did [gesticulated waving her hand] in my window. I just waved.
“He might have thought I did something else he came alongside me and was coming over the white line and shouting and screaming the worst abuse at me. I was so frightened.”
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
