Did someone call for a Maya & Marty reunion?

Saturday Night Live enlisted Martin Short to play Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Maya Rudolph’s onetime variety show cohost made his debut this weekend during Vice President Kamala Harris’ Passover seder, which she held in a failed attempt to unify politicians on both sides of the aisle, including Ted “Started at the Bottom, Now I’m Here” Cruz.

Before their guests arrived, Harris encouraged her shy, “Semitic smoke show” of a husband to loosen up and “pretend it’s just us.” That’s when the lights dimmed and the sketch took a surprisingly sexy turn.

“Listen to me, girl,” Short’s Emhoff said, wrapping his arms around his beloved wife. “I support you. Every time you look around, Dougie is so going to be there for you, honey… But from time to time, you’re going to look around and I am not going to be there. But that’s just me telling you, ‘You got this, baby!’”

“You’re my low-bearing wall,” Harris responded. “You hold up my roof. And you’re always on top of my basement.”

Eventually, Alex Moffat’s Joe Biden arrived, fresh off his first press conference as president of the United States. After he put Harris in charge of the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, he opened the front door to reveal a Passover surprise: his beloved dog Major. Before long, the unruly German Shepard attacked Emhoff, who was only able to break free once Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene showed up, “insurrection-style,” and scared Major away.

Additional guests at the unity seder included woke Second Daughter Ella Emhoff (played by Chloe Fineman) and Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock (played by Kenan Thompson).

Maya Rudolph to Headline Apple TV+ Comedy Series From Forever EPs https://briefnews.eu/maya-rudolph-to-headline-apple-tv-comedy-series-from-forever-eps/ https://briefnews.eu/maya-rudolph-to-headline-apple-tv-comedy-series-from-forever-eps/#respond Thu, 18 Mar 2021 17:06:01 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/maya-rudolph-to-headline-apple-tv-comedy-series-from-forever-eps/

Maya Rudolph and the minds behind her one-and-done Amazon dramedy Forever are teaming up once again, this time for an Apple TV+ comedy in which Rudolph will star.

Ordered straight to series on Thursday, the still-untitled project will star Rudolph as Molly, a woman whose seemingly perfect life is upended when her husband leaves her with nothing… except $ 87 billion.

Rudolph will also exec-produce with Forever‘s Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, who will serve as co-creators and writers on the half-hour series.

As reported in February, Rudolph will return to her Saturday Night Live stomping grounds later this month, when she hosts the March 27 episode. She’s been recurring on the late-night series since late 2020 to play Vice President Kamala Harris, while her other recent credits include voice work on Fox’s Bless the Harts and Netflix’s Big Mouth.

In addition to this newly ordered project, Apple TV+’s slate of in-the-works series includes the female-driven anthology Roar, an adaptation of Laura Lippman’s novel Lady in the Lake that will star Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o and the period drama The Essex Serpent, led by Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston.

SNL Parodies Second Debate, Casts Maya Rudolph as Kristen Welker — Plus, Rudy Giuliani Pulls Another ‘Borat’ https://briefnews.eu/snl-parodies-second-debate-casts-maya-rudolph-as-kristen-welker-plus-rudy-giuliani-pulls-another-borat/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-parodies-second-debate-casts-maya-rudolph-as-kristen-welker-plus-rudy-giuliani-pulls-another-borat/#respond Sun, 25 Oct 2020 15:56:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snl-parodies-second-debate-casts-maya-rudolph-as-kristen-welker-plus-rudy-giuliani-pulls-another-borat/

Saturday Night Live this weekend brought together Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump and Jim Carrey’s Joe Biden, possibly for the last time.

The comedy all stars faced off in SNL‘s parody of the second and final presidential debate, during which Trump assured the American people that he’d have a coronavirus vaccine in a matter of weeks. (“If I get reelected, everyone in America will be on a big, beautiful ventilator,” he boasted.)

Biden, on the other hand, struggled with anger management. He eventually launched into full Clint Eastwood mode, then defended himself against myriad attacks by the incumbent.

“First I’m creepy, then I’m sleepy,” he said. “You say I have dementia, then you say I’m a criminal mastermind.” He also defended himself against baseless accusations that he’s made millions through corrupt business dealings with China, adding, “I live in Delaware, [where] a night out is $ 28… I bought this suit on a train, c’mon!”

The debate also featured an appearance by Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani (played by Kate McKinnon), who made headlines this week for a compromising scene in the new Borat film. Once again, America’s mayor looked to be fondling himself.

“It’s not what it looks like!” Giuliani said. “My microphone was stuck… on my balls.”

Meanwhile, Maya Rudolph ditched her Kamala Harris impression to portray debate moderator Kristen Welker, who Trump mistook for Hoda Kotb, Padma Lakshmi and Mindy Kaling. Upon Biden’s first use of the word “malarkey,” Welker revealed her Biden Bingo card and took a shot.

At the end of the sketch, Rudolph joined Baldwin and Carrey on stage to mark the final debate sketch of the election cycle. “Good luck, America!” she exclaimed.

What did you think of SNL‘s take on Debate No. 2? And of the four cold opens Carrey’s Biden has appeared, which was your favorite? Drop your thoughts in a comment below.

At the end of Season 3 of the ABC drama, the EP had Grey’s Anatomy doc Carina forgive unfaithful lover Maya. But, rather than let Dean admit to Vic that he’d fallen for her, the boss had him ask his roommate to move out. Come Season 4, kicking off November 12 with a two-hour crossover event, the characters will continue down the paths they’ve chosen, Vernoff tells TVLine, however smooth or bumpy they may be.

Beyond that, you’ll have to wait and see.”

Vernoff is at least a smidgen more forthcoming about what it’ll take for Dean to admit that he’s made the biggest blunder of all time in pushing away fellow firefighter Vic, who’d been helping him care for newborn Pru. “It’s going to take a lot,” Vernoff says. “From Dean’s perspective, he has not made a blunder [by showing her the door]. He has made a difficult sacrifice in order to protect his friendship with Vic and by extension the entire Station 19 family.”

Stranger Things: Why Maya Hawke didn’t want Steve and Robin romance https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-why-maya-hawke-didnt-want-steve-and-robin-romance/ https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-why-maya-hawke-didnt-want-steve-and-robin-romance/#respond Mon, 12 Aug 2019 09:13:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-why-maya-hawke-didnt-want-steve-and-robin-romance/

Stranger Things season three introduced a number of new characters in its third season in the battle to defeat the Mind Flayer. One of the nicer surprises was the introduction of Robin Buckley (played by Maya Hawke), who played Steve Harrington’s (Joe Keery) Scoops Ahoy co-worker. Many viewers thought that a romance was blossoming between the characters in series three, but the actor has revealed in a new interview why she rallied against this.

Robin was one of the stand-out introductions in season three of Stranger Things.

Steve’s colleague at the Scoops Ahoy ice cream shop, she proved be be invaluable in helping to uncover the Russian operation going on underneath the Starcourt Mall.

The pair developed an unlikely friendship during the series, which some fans had initially thought was heading in a romantic direction.

However, when Steve declares his affection for her at the end of the season, Robin revealed that she is gay.

In a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Robin actor Maya Hawke revealed that the creators had planned to end their story romantically.

According to Hawke, writers and creators the Duffer brothers had originally mapped out the scene were Steve reveals his feelings for Robin to end differently.

Fans of the series will remember that this was hinted at throughout, with Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) repeatedly telling Steve that Robin was the perfect girl for him.

Hawke explained in the interview that around halfway through production on the series, her and her co-star Keery pushed back on the romantic storyline.

She said: “Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and Steve shouldn’t get together, and that she’s gay.

“Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever.”

She explained that the show runners Matt and Ross Duffer were really receptive to her ideas, and they worked together to work out a new ending.

Hawke added: “The Duffer brothers and I, and [producer] Shawn Levy, had a lot of conversations throughout shooting and it wasn’t really until we were shooting episode four and five, I think, that we made the final decision.

“It was a collaborative conversation, and I’m really, really happy with the way that it went.”

The actor also went on to talk about how happy she was with how people responded to Robin and her storyline in the series.

This was especially because she was the first openly LGBTQ+ character in the Stranger Things series.

She said that she hoped that her story can help people “fall in love with girls who love girls and boys who love boys”.

Many fans are hopeful that Robin will be back for a potential series four of the series.

This is something that Hawke herself is also anxious for, telling publication Consequence of Sound last month: “I wanna see her at the video store.

“So many of the great minds of the ‘80s and ‘80s filmmakers and creatives started out working in video stores, and as far as I know, that environment hasn’t really been explored on TV. I think that would be really fun.”

Stranger Things season 3 is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Emmerdale spoilers: Maya Stepney’s fate DESTROYS village as ‘lives changed forever’? https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepneys-fate-destroys-village-as-lives-changed-forever/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepneys-fate-destroys-village-as-lives-changed-forever/#respond Wed, 01 May 2019 08:10:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepneys-fate-destroys-village-as-lives-changed-forever/

Emmerdale fans were left shocked last night when Leyla Harding (played by Roxy Shahidi) confronted Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) over what she knows about Maya Stepney (Lousia Clein) grooming Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant).

Scenes which aired during the double bill showed the pair having an almighty argument about both of them retaining vital information which could bring Maya to legal justice.

Since there are now four people who know exactly what the school teacher has been up to, who is going to be the one to expose the truth fully?

During an interview with Digital Spy, actress Fiona Wade who plays Priya Sharma revealed a “life-changing” twist was in store for viewers next week.

Having spotted Maya kissing Jacob passionately outside the club, Priya informed her friends and between them, they devised a plan to get her into the car.

Viewers last saw Maya getting into the vehicle with Priya at the wheel, the only sober one on the night out who had taken on the role of the designated driver for the evening.

Joining up the dots, the four women headed into a forest where spoiler pictures have shown Maya dirty and disheveled emerging from the trees looking panicked.

But what exactly happened that night? Fiona said: “After driving off with Maya, Leyla initially told Priya to drive to the airport to find Jacob so they could speak to them both.

“They were not in a car going somewhere nice, the energy was very different and Maya suddenly picked up on that.

“Although Priya’s relationship with Jacob is slightly different to that of Leyla or Tracy [Metcalfe (Amy Walsh)], she was supporting the girls and also wanted to find out what the hell Maya had been doing with Jacob and what that kiss was all about.”

Referring to the flashback episodes she continued: “You see something has happened which has changed everyone’s lives forever. Something unexpected takes place and it’s the aftermath of that and the impact it has on the girls as individuals and on their friendships that we witness.”

What could Fiona be referring to? Viewers are still in the dark over what happened that night and there has been suspicion as to whether or not Maya is alive or dead.

Meanwhile, viewers are also going to find out exactly what happened to Ellis Chapman (Asan N’Jie).

During the Big Night Out last Thursday, he was stabbed and taken to hospital to receive emergency treatment.

After returning home earlier this week, the culprit is yet to be exposed.

However, there have been suggestions his brother Billy Fletcher (Jay Konztle) is to blame after being seen with a knife in his sock that same night Ellis was injured.

Official soap spoilers for next week’s instalments have suggested Billy will go on the run in fear of the truth coming out.

But he is quickly stopped and confesses what really happened that night to none other than Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).

Scared he is going to lose his brother forever, Billy will have a heart-to-heart and tells Ellis everything he knows. Is he guilty?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV.

Emmerdale spoilers: Viewers in uproar as they have to wait for Maya and Jacob outcome https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-viewers-in-uproar-as-they-have-to-wait-for-maya-and-jacob-outcome/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-viewers-in-uproar-as-they-have-to-wait-for-maya-and-jacob-outcome/#respond Fri, 26 Apr 2019 05:09:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-viewers-in-uproar-as-they-have-to-wait-for-maya-and-jacob-outcome/

The walls are certainly closing in on Maya Stepney (played by Louisa Clein) as her forbidden affair with Jacob Gallagher was recently revealed by Priya Kotecha (Fiona Wade) and his mum, Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi), now knows what she has done.

But Emmerdale fans will have to wait until next month to see the sickened parent confront the paedophile for grooming the vulnerable teenager.

In last night’s instalment of the ITV drama series, Priya spotted Maya and (Jacob Joe-Warren Plant) kissing out in the open and told Leyla what she had seen.

The news infuriated Leyla, who later approached Maya as she attempted to jump into a car with Priya and Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh).

At the end of the episode it was revealed soap watchers would not find out what happened to the perverted teacher until May 6.

The announcement outraged fans of the show, who have longed to see Maya be held accountable for her despicable behaviour.

Taking to Twitter, to complain about the delay, one person wrote: “I can’t wait till 6th May, what’s going on Emmerdale.”

“The 6th of May! What about tomorrow? These soaps know how to drag it out,” another groaned.

A third person fumed: “Why have we gotta wait all the way to the 6th May to find out what happens, what they all doing for the next 11 days.”

Someone else asked: “Monday 6th May? Why the wait? What’s on tomorrow’s Emmerdale?”

Meanwhile, a fifth individual tweeted: “So it looks like 7th May is gonna be the ones to watch. I’m kinda disappointed we have to wait over a week!”

Emmerdale’s executive producer Kate Brooks previously confirmed viewers would have to wait a week to find out exactly what happened on the ‘Big Night Out’.

Speaking to The Irish Sun back in February, she said: “We’ve got some really brilliant stuff coming up in April, May time.

“A ‘Big Night Out’, which we will tell in a very interesting, fresh way. That’s really good.”

She continued: “It’s a night out for some of our characters, and we’ll find out a week later what’s gone on in that night out in a series of flashbacks.

“Ostensibly it’s, ‘Hey, Emmerdale are out having fun in a club’, but then it will be revealed that it will change some of our characters’ lives for good.

“There’s a lot of drama involved in that night, and because we’re Emmerdale, we’re telling it in a kind of different way.”

Elsewhere, actress Louisa Clein admitted it has been difficult to film intimate scenes with such as young actor.

She told the Loose Women panellist: “It’s a job, that’s what we do as actors. It’s awkward with someone your own age, as well as someone who is young.

“Joe-Warren has been on the show since he was eight years old. He has grown up on that show.”

Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.

Emmerdale spoilers: Jacob and Maya plot takes turn as furious Gabby confronts him https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-jacob-and-maya-plot-takes-turn-as-furious-gabby-confronts-him/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-jacob-and-maya-plot-takes-turn-as-furious-gabby-confronts-him/#respond Tue, 16 Apr 2019 16:05:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-jacob-and-maya-plot-takes-turn-as-furious-gabby-confronts-him/

Emmerdale’s Jacob Gallagher (played by Joe-Warren Plant) hasn’t been having a very good time of late on the ITV soap.

He’s still still being abused and manipulated by teacher Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein), and his now ex-girlfriend, Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) is blackmailing them after she found out their dark secret.

Liv has demanded £5,000 by any means necessary, and Jacob and Maya don’t really have much choice but to pay.

This Tuesday night will see Jacob’s dad, David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) ask him whether he’d want to go and see his mother in Portugal.

David is still completely unaware of what’s really going on, and it’s a bit unbelievable since David is dating the schoolteacher.

In a recent video clip released on Emmerdale’s official show site Gabby (Rosie Bentham) calls Jacob a “loser” for cheating on her best friend.

David starts off by saying that nobody was hurt by Jacob’s cheating, unaware that his son is in a relationship with his girlfriend.

Gabby then slams Jacob for his actions and hurting Liv.

“Well no, he just two-timed my best mate,” says Gabby.

She then asks: “Who was she then? This girl you’ve been fooling around with?

“Well, whoever she is, I pity her, because who wants a loser like you for a boyfriend?”

Maya is in the shop when this happens, and there’s a pained expression on her face as Jacob looks crestfallen.

It’s been revealed that Maya will soon be caught, and fans are looking forward to her getting her comeuppance.

However, it’s still uncertain how long this particular storyline will go on for.

It could end up being resolved in the courts and Maya could easily be thrown into prison on charges of grooming.

Meanwhile, last week saw Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) catch the pair in bed together, and all hell broke loose in the village.

However, in a shocking twist, it seems as though Maya could be murdered when she heads on a night out with her fellow residents.

In the teaser, Maya can be seen with blood on her head as she looks at herself in the mirror, devastated by what has happened.

Meanwhile, Jacob’s birth mother Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) can be seen slamming her fists on the mirror in anger, which could suggest she loses control after catching Maya abusing her son. Will she go too far?

Emmerdale continues Monday on ITV at 7pm.

Emmerdale spoilers: Maya Stepney makes HUGE mistake as David Metcalfe closes in https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepney-makes-huge-mistake-as-david-metcalfe-closes-in/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepney-makes-huge-mistake-as-david-metcalfe-closes-in/#respond Sun, 10 Mar 2019 13:17:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepney-makes-huge-mistake-as-david-metcalfe-closes-in/

The ITV soap has now released a first-look video which shows David (played by Matthew Wolfenden) just moments away from uncovering the unlawful relationship between Maya (Louisa Clein) and Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant).

It comes as David goes to confront his son in the village hall where he has just been kissing with Maya on Emmerdale.

The teacher quickly hides from David but it transpires he isn’t on the warpath because he knows what sick Maya has been up to.

He’s angry because his date night with Maya was been sabotaged by the youngster when he got David to look after Amba.

But when David rages in the hall, Jacob thinks he’s discovered what’s been going on with Maya as she desperately tries to evade detection just metres away in her hiding place.

“I know what you’ve done Jake,” David warns and it’s clear Jacob thinks he’s talking about Maya before he suddenly comes to his senses and realises it’s all about him meddling with the date night.

“Oh, of course,” Jacob declares as the realisation hits him.

“Have we got out wires crossed or something?” David probes

“I think so,” Jacob replies before David interrogates: “So what did you think I meant when I said I knew what you’d done?”

However, his line of questioning is interrupted when Maya accidentally makes a huge racket in her hiding place and David’s suspicions are raised.

“Is someone else here?” he asks as Jacob denies it.

But David dashes to the room where Maya is hiding, although, before he can get there, Jacob accuses him of never putting his kids first.

It could be that Jacob’s attempts are futile as David then finds one of Maya’s earrings lying on the floor.

Is the jig finally up for the abuser? Viewers will have to wait and see.

Earlier this week on the soap, Maya slept with the teenager for the first time following a series of interruptions on previous attempts.

They had initially arranged to have sex on Jacob’s 16th birthday but it didn’t go to plan.

This week, Jacob went to meet Maya at the hotel where she had intended to meet David, and the teacher was wearing a rather revealing outfit.

The scenes troubled some viewers as broadcasting watchdog Ofcom received 21 complaints.

A spokesperson told The Sun: “We’ve received 21 complaints about those scenes in Emmerdale, which we are assessing against our broadcasting rules, before deciding whether or not to investigate.”

Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV.
