That is according to former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane. Spurs boss Pochettino is the favourite to become the next permanent Manchester United manager in the summer, while Real Madrid have also been mooted as suitors. The Argentine is yet to win a trophy at the north London club but has exceeded many people’s expectations with the transfer budget he has at his disposal. Pochettino has admitted Spurs need to spend more if they want to compete for the major honours. Keane was in the Tottenham team when they last won a trophy back in 2008. He concedes his former side need to win some silverware but can see that task made harder if Mauricio Pochettino leaves. “Yes they do [need to win a trophy],” Keane said on Sky Sports. “When people go on about it quite a lot it certainly gets into people’s heads. “Tottenham are on the verge of doing something big I think, in the next few years. “If they lose this manager, it’s going to set them back a few more years. “You don’t want to do that because in the last few years under Pochettino, he’s been incredible. “He’s a fantastic manager and listen, when you’re as good as him, of course there’s going to be big teams come for you. “But Tottenham’s a massive team, new stadium coming. “I fancy them tonight to win and the second leg. “If they win a cup I think that will just set the ball rolling for them. “Keeping this manager is a key factor in that.” Tottenham beat Chelsea 1-0 in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday night to maintain their push for a first trophy under Pochettino. Harry Kane scored the winner after a VAR decision saw the England striker awarded a penalty for a foul by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa. The two sides play in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge on January 22. Chelsea must play Newcastle and Arsenal between that second leg, while Spurs have games against Manchester United and Fulham to come.
The pair will go head to head twice in December after being drawn against them in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
They meet in the Premier League on December 2 before the cup match on December 17.
But the managers could be set for an unusual bromance with Pochettino admitting he ‘loves’ the Arsenal boss.
“It will be an exciting game, I’m excited face to Arsenal,” Pochettino said after the Carabao Cup draw.
CHAOS IN THE STANDS: DID YOU SEE SHOCKING SCENES AT LONDON STADIUM?
“Unai Emery is good friend and a top manager and doing a great job.
“In our history Arsenal are a great rival – but I love Unai and have great respect for him.”
That may not sit well with Tottenham fans who are already frustrated with the way the season is going.
The stadium issues have exacerbated the support and Pochettino himself admitted he wasn’t feeling good about the campaign last week.
“The season so far, it’s strange because my feeling is the worst I’ve had in the five years that I’ve been here,” he said last week.
“But it’s the best start ever for the club in the Premier League. It’s strange, no?
“It’s so difficult to explain because many things happen, I am disappointed we are still waiting for the new stadium when the expectation was to be there at the beginning of the season.
“I know I always have a good relationship with the media but my feeling is not the best feeling, I had a better feeling in previous seasons.”
Last night’s win over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup has eased the strain somewhat and they face Wolves on Saturday night.
Son Heung-min marked his 150th appearance for Spurs with his first two goals of the season to set up a 3-1 victory.
Lucas Perez briefly halved the deficit but Fernando Llorente, handed a rare run-out with Harry Kane rested, wrapped up victory for Spurs.
The visitors had, of course, been in action just 48 hours earlier against Manchester City on a dreadful Wembley pitch, so Pochettino made 10 changes to his line-up with Davinson Sanchez the only survivor.
The Spurs boss said: “I feel very happy, to play two competitive games in 48 hours, Manchester City and then a London derby, I feel very proud.
“The performance was very good, always we try to play better but for different circumstances we have to be happy.
“Some players are working so hard, trying to wait for their opportunity, and then Davinson Sanchez played two games in 48 hours – and he was fantastic. I can’t praise him enough.”
Son Heung-min was relieved to finally end his goal drought after firing Tottenham into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
“Winning in the derby against West Ham always feels very good,” Son told Spurs TV.
“The most important thing is that we won. We’re in the next round and, finally, I scored!
“It’s been a long time, I’ve been feeling really sorry. It feels really, really good to score again for this team. Finally I’m back to scoring.
“Of course I’ve got a little bit of confidence back. It’s been a long time to score again because I went away for a long time so I felt very sorry but finally I can score for this team and help this team.
“I don’t want to pressure myself but I’m always hungry and want to improve every day.
“If I don’t score I’m sad. Of course winning is important but I always want to score and do my best for this team.”
Arsenal and Tottenham will go head-to-head in a festive north London derby in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
The Gunners and Spurs have been paired together after their respective fourth-round wins over Blackpool and West Ham.
They will meet at the Emirates in the week commencing December 17, just over two weeks after their Premier League battle at the same venue.
It will be a tie that both sides might have been keen to avoid as they both aim to get their hands on silverware.
Unai Emery is looking to get his Gunners tenure off to the best possible start while Mauricio Pochettino is still waiting for his first trophy at Spurs.
The two rivals last met in this competition in 2015, when Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners.
Chelsea’s reward for seeing off Derby, managed by one of their most decorated players Frank Lampard, is a home tie with Bournemouth.
Middlesbrough beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday and were handed a home game with League One Burton and a significant chance of progressing to the semi-final.
Reigning champions Manchester City play Fulham on Thursday and the winner will face either Leicester or Southampton.
That game was due to be played on Tuesday, but was postponed following the tragic death of Foxes owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha on Saturday.
Tottenham fear they will be hit by the fall out after Pochettino was identified as the man the Spanish giants want to replace him.
Spurs are in a position of almost total power however as Pochettino signed a new five-year contract only last week.
That gave the Argentinian a £3million pay rise, taking his salary to £8.5million, and made him the fourth highest paid manager in the Premier League.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who is notoriously unwavering in his negotiations, can feel confident that any attempt to lure Pochettino to the Spanish capital can be rebuffed, especially as there is no release clause in the new contract.
Real chairman Florentino Perez is a huge admirer of Pochettino however, especially after Tottenham inflicted a 3-1 group stage defeat on the eventual champions at Wembley in November.
And West Ham defender Pablo Zabaleta, who played alongside Pochettino at Espanyol, believes his ex-team-mate would not turn Real down.
“He’s doing a great job in England and recently extended his contract with Tottenham so he’s happy there,” he said.”But if he has the opportunity to take over at a big team, then he will take it.”
Perez also has a much cheaper alternative available in the shape of Arsene Wenger.
It seems incredible that a man who left Arsenal having failed to win the domestic title since 2004 should be in contention – but Wenger insists he turned Real down “two or three times” in his 22 years as Gunners boss.
Zidane bowed out after leading Real to three successive Champions Leagues in just two-and-a-half years.
The Frenchman is understood to have been furious with Perez for not backing him earlier in the season when poor domestic results saw Real finish way behind champions Barcelona in third place.
“What I think is that this team needs to continue winning but I think it needs a change, a different voice, another methodology,” Zidane said. “This is the right moment for all involved – for me, for the squad, for the club.”
And if the clear-out he wants happens, with as many as five players leaving White Hart Lane, that could bring in another £100m to spend.
The Spurs manager has told Levy that to take the club to the next level, challenging for the Champions League and Premier League, they have to sign elite players – not up and coming youngsters or stars other clubs have let go.
The Argentine has made veiled threats this past few weeks that he could move on if his demands are not met after a third successive top four finish was confirmed on Sunday.
And in meetings with Levy this week, Pochettino will make it clear he wants promises of significant spending if he is to sign the new £8.5m deal Spurs are offering him, despite the cost the club will incur moving into their new £850m stadium.
Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, at £50m, is one player Pochettino covets, as are Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, Celtic star Keiran Tierney and Swansea defender Alfie Mawson.
The Argentine at the very least wants two new wing backs, a centre back and another top level striker to back up Harry Kane.
Shipped out to make room for the new arrivals are likely to be Danny Rose – a target for United – Moussa Sissoko, Serge Aurier and Mousa Dembele, and even Brazilian Lucas Moura, who only arrived at the club in January in a £25m deal, but could already be moved on.
Defender Toby Aderweireld is another likely to leave because he wants more money but if possible Pochettino would like the club to persuade the £40 million-valued Belgian to stay.
Equally crucial to Pochettino’s plans are persuading the club’s other key players to commit to Spurs.
Express Sport revealed last week that key playmaker Christian Eriksen is a target for Paris St Germain, so the Argentine wants he, Kane, Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris tied down to new deals as soon as possible.
And yesterday defender Kyle Walker-Peters signed a new contract with Spurs, committed himself to the club until 2021.
The 21-year-old made nine appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s men this season, scoring his first goal for the club in the 6-1 FA Cup win over Rochdale in February.
The Saints find themselves in real trouble of relegation following a dreadful run of results of late.
Saturday’s 3-0 hammering away to Newcastle left Southampton fans pleading with the board to take action.
And it appears the club have taken notice, relieving the Argentinian of his duties before this week’s FA Cup clash with Wigan.
A statement released by the club this hour reads, “Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has parted company with First Team Manager Mauricio Pellegrino.
“Assistant Manager Carlos Compagnucci and Assistant First Team Coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the club.
“We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future.
“The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already underway.”
Following Saturday’s defeat, Pellegrino admitted that he “observed some players who gave up”.
Southampton are now looking for their fifth manager since 2013.
Despite their constant changing of managers, Southampton have not finished below 14th in the table in their last five seasons.
The club sit 17th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone.
Villas-Boas, who managed Spurs between 2012 and 2013 when Kane made his Premier League bow, said on Tuesday if the striker wanted to win trophies and honours, he would have to leave White Hart Lane.
Kane hit his 150th club goal at the weekend to earn Tottenham a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace which left them in fourth place in the Premier League table.
Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has signalled that Kane would be one of his club’s major transfer options this summer, ahead of Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski.
But on Tuesday Tottenham manager Pochettino, preparing his side for Wednesday’s fifth-round FA Cup replay against League One strugglers Rochdale at Wembley, swept aside all the rumours, saying: “I have no reaction to that.
“We are all here to help the club achieve and win titles. Harry is very happy here. Of course he wants to win titles with us. All of us do.”
Pochettino, who will again be without defenders Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen on Wednesday, added: “We are very happy with our squad.
“There are always a lot of rumours, about our players and about the manager. I think I heard we even had an offer for the chairman! There are always rumours.”
Pochettino, whose team will face an away quarter-final to Swansea if they can overcome Rochdale, has denied that playing home games at Wembley will give his team an advantage if they make it through to the semi-finals.
Some teams have privately expressed disquiet that playing at Wembley all season would give Spurs an advantage should they reach the last four, when both ties will be staged at the national stadium.
But the Argentine laughed off the suggestion, pointing at the difficulties Spurs had in early games this season at the stadium.
“Now it’s an advantage? Before, people were saying it was a disadvantage. Remember the Wembley hoodoo?
“At the time people wanted me to say yes, it is a problem playing at Wembley, and to recognise the problem. I laugh – but it’s not an advantage.
“We are playing at a stadium that is massive motivation for our opponent to play at, for them to have the opportunity to play there.”
Spurs drew 2-2 at Spotland in the first game between the clubs two weeks ago with a patchy display.
But Pochettino insisted: “We were not complacent up there. These are all difficult games – look at Manchester City, they lost at Wigan.
“I do not want to look too far ahead. We need to win, and it will not be easy. This is a very important game.”
Pochettino has seen his side slip outside of the top four and is ready to bring in reinforcements when the transfer window opens next week.
He is ready to battle Chelsea for England midfielder Barkley, who is returning to fitness after having surgery on a ruptured hamstring.
Barkley, out of contract in the summer, played in a behind-closed-doors game at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground early last week.
And the 24-year-old, who appears on the wanted list of Arsenal and West Ham as well as the Blues, will be ready for first-team action in time for the transfer window.
Manchester United left-back Shaw is another long-term Pochettino target and has struggled to settle at Old Trafford since his £30million move from Southampton in 2014 – he is also interesting Newcastle.
Jose Mourinho will let Shaw leave the club to finance a £25m move for Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and his players were involved in a huge tunnel bust-up at Old Trafford last week after City won the Manchester derby when the Portuguese and his team were infuriated by the loud music and celebrations pumping from the City dressing room after the game.
And at Swansea on Wednesday night the volume of the music coming from the City dressing room after their crushing 4-0 win – which made it a record-breaking 15 victories on the bounce – almost drowned out the post-match press conferences at the Liberty Stadium.
But Spurs manager Pochettino insists he will not be bothered by any loud tunes.
And even if his side lose, he will not object to the City players pumping out the vibes because he will want his players to feel the pain.
“I’m hoping for loud music tonight!” said Pochettino. “When we won our games at Huddersfield, and at Wembley against Stoke, the players put the music on and it’s so loud. It’s normal.
“If you lose, you are not going to put the music on. You go to the changing room, you shower, and you want to go back home quick.
“But because City are winning, winning, winning, it’s normal they put music on in the changing room. Before games, both changing rooms have loud music. But only one can win. If it’s a draw, both teams will have the music.
“I never complain if another team celebrate because sometimes it’s good when you lose, and you hear all that in another changing room. It’s good to feel the pain.
“Basically, if we run more, we play better and we care more, we can beat them. We need to translate that feeling to the opposite changing room.”
And the Spurs boss has admitted he is open to the prospect of the Real Madrid star making a stunning return to Tottenham.
Bale is nearing the Real exit door and he is set to be made available for a transfer next summer.
Manchester United have held a long-term interest in the Welshman and have attempted to snap him up on numerous occasions.
But they could have a fight on their hands with Pochettino refusing to dampen the chances of Bale rejoining ahead of the club’s return to White Hart Lane next year.
Pochettino said: “Of course he’s a fantastic player. He keeps contact with all the people here that worked here in the past.”
Spurs sold Bale to Real for £85million in September 2013 and they would have to fight both United and City to bring him back to the Premier League.
Bale’s form and fitness has nosedived in the last year, sparking talk that his four years stay in Spain is coming to an end.
The 28-year-old will miss Real Madrid’s league clash against Sevilla as he continues his recovery from a calf muscle injury.
