Labor Day weekend is everyone’s last summer hurrah — a great time to grill, hit the beach, and of course, shop. When you’re not paying tribute to the unofficial end of summer out in the sun, make sure to check out the Labor Day sales all over the internet this weekend. If you have things on your wishlist you want in the next couple months, now’s the best time to cross them off since the next big sales won’t arrive until November.
We rounded up the ones we already know about that are worth shopping this year.
We’ll be updating this post as we learn about more Labor Day weekend deals. Check back often to ensure you’re not missing out on a good sale on clothing, home and kitchen products, mattresses, furniture, and more during this big retail holiday.

Why settle for one mattress when you can have 700? See the rest of the story at Business Insider

SEE ALSO: The best mattresses you can buy
![]()

Side sleepers, it’s a tough life we’ve chosen. Or rather, a tough life that’s chosen us. Finding a mattress that allows us to attain that ever-elusive good night’s sleep may be difficult, but it’s certainly necessary. After all, if back sleepers and even stomach sleepers can find a way to catch some z’s, why can’t we?
Perhaps the biggest challenge that I’ve faced in my side sleeping days is finding a mattress that is firm enough to support my contours, but soft enough to avoid feeling pressure — particularly in my hip and shoulder. And while that mattress may feel like a unicorn, I’m here to bear some good news: There are, in fact, quite a few great mattresses for side sleepers that don’t cost a fortune. We’ve put together this buying guide with the best ones you can buy based on research and testing.
When considering a side sleeping mattress, you should keep a few things in mind. First and foremost, you’ll want your bed to help with spinal alignment. There’s nothing worse than waking up with terrible back pain because you’ve somehow curled up into a rather unstrategic ball during the night.
You’ll also need to find a mattress that alleviates pressure. I often find that I toss and turn because my mattress isn’t forgiving enough on my hip, or that my shoulder is sore because my mattress is just a little too firm.
That means that the ideal mattress for us side sleepers is likely a bit softer than you might otherwise want. But be sure that the mattress isn’t too supple. After all, you’ll need something that will support you across a range of sleeping positions. It’s likely that even though you start off on your slide, you ultimately fall asleep on your back or on your stomach, and as such, you’ll want a mattress that is as dynamic and flexible as you are.
Regardless of which one you choose from our favorites, though, we’re confident that you’ll get a good night’s sleep. And if you find that these mattresses don’t work for you, rest assured that they come with a sleep trial so you can take these beds for a test run before making a long-term commitment.
Helix
Helix believes that when it comes to your mattress, there is no such thing as one size fits all. And for side sleepers, that’s excellent news. Buying a mattress from this online company starts with a quiz and ends with a customized mattress.
The quiz asks basic questions about your height and weight, as well as how many people are normally in your bed and what size you’d prefer. But then, it also gets into whether or not you toss and turn at night, your sleeping position, pressure points, whether or not you feel hot in the night, how firm your current mattress is, and how much you like it. From there, Helix begins to create a mattress that suits your body and your sleeping preferences.
I found that the Helix is particularly useful for side sleepers because of its relative softness. For years, I was convinced that I was a fan of firm mattresses, only to find that the firmer the mattress, the more pain I felt on my pressure points. But Helix’s version of “firm” seems to be a bit less severe than other mattresses. That means that even if you’re as overzealous as I am, you’ll likely end up with a mattress that won’t cause you to wake up stiff or in pain.
The Helix also features a Dynamic Foam top layer, which responds quickly to your movement so you never feel like you’re sinking too far into the mattress (which could also affect your alignment). And if you’re a hot sleeper, this layer of foam works with the microcoils of the mattress to aid in heat dissipation.
Another important thing to note: Helix can actually personalize a mattress for two people, which means that if you and your partner don’t have the same preferences when it comes to your bed, you can still lay on the same mattress. You’ll have to stick to your respective lanes quite literally, of course, but at the very least, it allows you to comfortably share a bed.
Folks on Amazon have been big fans of the sleep quiz, with one five-star review noting, “Trust the quiz and go with it’s recommendation.” Another wrote, “Amazing bed!! Absolutely love it. I was skeptical at first but it was probably one of my best purchases this year.”
Pros: Total customization allows for a soft (yet not too soft) mattress, plush feel, great for couples who have different sleeping positions
Cons: Some customers report that the Helix mattress does not age particularly well
Bear Mattress
If your muscles are already tired and sore from hours of sports practice and training, the last thing you need is a mattress that leaves you even tighter than before. Bear is here to ensure that doesn’t happen. The mattress is made of a high-density memory foam, which is quick to respond. Because it’s relatively soft, it certainly helps to relieve pressure points, and as one happy buyer noted on Mattress Guides, the Bear “doesn’t cause too much shoulder or neck tension.”
Sleepopolis also created a pressure map to visualize what sleeping in different positions on the Bear did for the body, and happily, there were no dangerous red zones for folks sleeping on their sides.
The real differentiating factor of this mattress, however, lies in its use of Celliant technology, a relatively new innovation that is rarely found in mattresses. All of Bear’s mattresses are woven with Celliant’s FDA Determined Infrared Yarn Technology, which claims to “harness your body’s natural energy to aid recovery time and overall well-being.”
As per Celliant’s own website, the material applies a blend of minerals and “proprietary ingredients” in order to enhance tissue oxygen levels, improve athletic performance, and perhaps most importantly, improve sleep quality.
While this sounds a bit like black magic, don’t be so quick to write these claims off. Folks at the Sleep Judge attested to “waking up feeling a sense of rejuvenation” that was unlike other experiences. I also found that my rest on a Bear mattress seemed to yield better results than sleeping on other products — at the very least, it was easier to go to kickboxing in the morning.
Celliant technology also doesn’t seem to result in any overheating (despite its leveraging of infrared energy). In fact, because the mattress utilizes graphite gel infused memory foam, I found that my body temperature was quite well-regulated, and I didn’t have to kick off all the covers in the middle of the night.
Nearly 3,000 buyers have given the Bear mattress a five-star review on the company website, and I certainly agreed with this assessment.
Pros: Celliant technology, memory foam support and softness, accessible price point, 10 year limited warranty
Cons: While some side sleepers love memory foam, it’s not for everyone. Some reviewers also noted that the bed could be a bit too firm.
Nectar
Some of the best things in life have layers, and the Nectar mattress is among them. Nectar’s mattresses boast an impressive five layers, topped with a Tencel Cooling cover, the same material that is often used in workout apparel and heralded for its sweat-wicking capabilities.
But heat dissipation aside, the Nectar is a fantastic mattress for folks who have sensitive pressure points in their hips and shoulders. That’s thanks to the mattress’ layers of memory foam and contouring gel layers. Together, these two materials create a soft yet supportive mattress.
So what exactly are these various layers comprised of? Once you get past the Tencel cover, you’ll find a quilted pad of gel memory foam. The next layer is Nectar’s patented LushFoam, which promises to distribute weight and heat evenly across your body. Then, there’s the Hi Core adaptive foam, which seems to be the key to Nectar’s ability to support your weight, and finally, there’s a base layer of high-density foam, which contributes to the mattress’ overall stability.
When I first lay down on the Nectar, I felt as though I were sinking into my bed in quite a luxurious manner. That’s thanks largely to the one-inch quilted top layer, which is the first stage of the mattress’ pressure relief. There’s actually also another inch of gel memory foam that is key to the contouring aspect of the mattress. I found that the Nectar conformed well to the shape of my body, rather than fighting against it (and my sleeping habits).
Underneath these layers is a three-inch layer of memory foam, which Sleepopolis notes is “slow to respond to pressure,” which means that you won’t meet with a whole lot of resistance when you sink into the mattress for a long night’s rest. Underneath these three inches is yet another layer of memory foam, which again adds some pressure relief.
In essence, you’re getting a bed whose whole purpose is to ensure that you don’t wake up with pain points, which is all I’ve ever asked for in a bed. As SleepAdvisor says, Nectar “contours to curves and reduces pressure, which works wonders for people who tend to sleep on their sides.”
Pros: Provides great pressure relief (particularly to the hips and shoulders), bed bug resistant, great value
Cons: Some customers have noted that the mattress sleeps too hot

We’ve researched more than 40 of the top online mattress companies, surveyed hundreds of Wirecutter readers about their mattresses, interviewed experts on sleeping and mattress design, and spent more than six months sleeping on and assessing foam mattresses. All of that leads us to recommend the Leesa as a mattress that will work well for most people who sleep on their side or stomach.

We focused on an increasingly popular subset of mattresses: those that come in only one model, cost less than $ 1,000, arrive within a week in a vacuum-packed roll inside a box, and come with a free trial of at least 100 days.
To find the mattresses people wanted, we spoke to a number of experts, surveyed nearly 650 people about the last mattress they bought, and read a lot about how mattresses are made and sold. We sought mattresses that would work best for the primary sleep positions: side, stomach, and back, based on results from multiple surveys and our own quick Twitter poll, and eventually settled on six mattresses to test. We then spent a week sleeping on each model, and took notes on their performance. Since our first test, we’ve continued to test month by month by trying a number of mattresses readers have asked about, sleeping on each for a minimum of 30 days.
How you feel sleeping on each mattress is obviously the key feature, but we considered other points of comparison. Those factors, in order of importance:

Here is the core truth of the mattress market: You won’t find one mattress that works for everybody. The best any mattress can do, our experts told us, is work great for a small group of people, feel pretty good for some, and do okay for a majority of people. This might explain why single-model mattresses you can try out for about 100 days are gaining in market share: Finding the perfect mattress is tricky, but making a mistake shouldn’t be a 10-year disappointment.

The Leesa is our top pick among online-purchase mattresses because for side- and stomach-sleepers in our tests, it feels the best overall. It breathes better than all but one of the mattresses we tested, allowing for a cooler sleep. The Leesa also handles better at its edges than most other picks, providing acceptable support for entering, exiting, or rolling over on the bed. Consumer Reports’s simulated wear-and-tear testing (subscription required) found the Leesa to be excellent. It has a surface that feels good under thin sheets, and it looks good in its gray and white stripes.
Compared with other foam beds, the Leesa allowed side-sleepers’ shoulders and hips to sink in more comfortably, but still maintains a proper spinal curve. The Leesa’s “hug”—the way it envelops your body as you lower into the memory-foam layer—did not create heat or a “muddy” feeling. Instead, the Leesa felt cooler than other mattresses we’ve slept on, possibly due to the egg-crate-style top layer of Avena foam (a type of synthetic latex), combined with a breathable cover.

The newest mattress from Casper, released in mid-2017, feels softer for side-sleeping than previous versions, and yet has more support around the hips and head to make back-sleeping feel better than before. It’s not quite as ideal as the Leesa for the majority of side-sleeping adults, and it felt a bit more warm to our testers. But for those who switch a lot, or share a bed with a back-sleeper, it might be a better pick than the Leesa.
Casper’s mattress is made of four layers of foam consisting of 1½ inches of “open-cell” foam, 1½ inches of memory foam, 1½ inches of proprietary “transition” foam, and 5 inches of support foam. The result, according to Casper’s head of product, Jeff Chapin, should be a mattress that’s essentially medium-firm across most of your body but more supportive where your shoulders, butt, and other pressure points sink in.

The Tuft & Needle mattress is firm, about as firm as foam can get before it becomes uncomfortable. For back-sleepers, or for people who prefer floating on a firm mattress instead of sinking into a soft mattress, the Tuft & Needle works fine. It isn’t ideal for most side-sleepers or stomach-sleepers, though some of our side-sleeping survey respondents loved it. The two-layer Tuft & Needle mattress’ stated weight limit is also the most of any mattress we tested, at 1,000 pounds for couples.
The Tuft & Needle has some other drawbacks beyond its particular firmness. For example, we noticed that this mattress offers notably less edge support than the Leesa or the newest Casper, so some fitted sheets might slip off the corners.

Although it’s around a third of the price—or less—of our other picks, we found the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea Mattress (12-inch version) was far more comfortable than expected. It has a softer memory-foam-type feel on top, and it’s quite firm as you sink into it. In its smaller twin, twin XL, and full sizes, the price makes it a good bed for a growing child, for anyone on a tight budget, or for a guest bedroom.
The Green Tea Mattress doesn’t breathe as easily as our other picks, and it’s not as supportive as the Casper or Leesa (though it’s far more giving than the Tuft & Needle). That said, a handful of testers (including four Wirecutter writers) have told us that they or their child sleep well on this mattress. “More than I expected for the price” sums up the comments we received from staff and on social network posts.

Bear Mattress
Editor’s Note: This is an earlier review of Bear Mattress that we’re featuring because Bear Mattress has announced a $ 100 discount for any Bear Mattress through Wednesday, July 12 by using code “PRIME100”.
There is no shortage of new, out-of-the-box foam mattress companies these days, which is great for customers because of the variety of options. It makes it tough for these companies to differentiate themselves from each other, but there are differences in each one.
I read our January 2017 story about Bear Mattress and decided to put it to the test myself. Bear Mattress’ unique claim is that they’re ideal for active lifestyles. I’m pretty active; I bike to work and exercise regularly, but that’s not what appealed to me about the company’s mattress.
The key reason I went with Bear was because of the Graphite Gel Foam portion of the mattress, which claims to help keep your body cool while you sleep.
I’m a very hot sleeper, and especially in the summer, I often wake up and have to throw the covers off to stop sweating; so I wanted to see if I was able to at least reduce this consistent problem. The end result is that after a couple months on this mattress, I’m absolutely much cooler while asleep, and I wake up less frequently.
I spent $ 850 for the mattress, and a few days later a 70-lb. box showed up at my apartment. While ultimately the important thing is sleeping, it was super fun to unfold and open the mattress as it instantly comes to life once you let air into the plastic seal. I wanted a mattress that wasn’t completely made of memory foam, so I was glad that it is able to push back a little rather than letting you sink into in completely.
The foam mattress also has the benefit of reducing motion transfer; so you if you have a partner, their movements won’t disturb you in the same ways that a traditional spring mattress transfers energy. The result is that we’re both sleeping with less disturbances and better support. I don’t wake up sore anymore, and I feel more well rested than I did on my old mattress.
Bear also claims their technology helps stimulate cell performance and regeneration, which will supposedly help injuries heal quicker and increase endurance. I am not a scientist, so I cannot comment on the mattress’s ability to do any of this. My recommendation of this mattress as a great option for people is because of the increase in my quality of sleep and its ability to help control temperature during the night. I like sleeping with some kind of blanket on, and I’m able to do that comfortably without getting overheated.
The company sent me one of their pillows a few months ago and as you can read in my review of that product here, it really did help me sort out some neck problems I was having with traditional pillows. Many of these new mattress companies are making pillows, too, which I think is a great way to try out the technology and get comfortable with the idea of taking the big plunge, which is what I did with Bear Mattress. If you’d like to try the Bear Pillow first, you can get one here for $ 95.
Bear’s mattresses are available in the following sizes: twin ($ 500), twin XL ($ 650), full ($ 750), queen ($ 850), king and California king ($ 950). Click here for more purchasing information and use the code “PRIME100” for $ 100 off.

But apart from the 21st century addition of not checking texts in the dead of night, the most important aid to a good night’s sleep is a quality mattress.
Thomas Colleran, business development manager for Duvalay, a Yorkshire mattress company his parents Alan and Liz started at home in 2003, suggests using sales to trade up to a more luxurious model.
In the UK most of us still buy 4ft 6ins double beds that only offer the same space as a child’s cot per adult. Colleran adds: “Buy as big a bed as you can to ensure less partner disturbance during the night.”
Hilary Devey of Dragons’ Den agreed to invest in the company when Colleran’s parents appeared on the show in 2011.
The result is a range of ultra-comfortable mattresses with pocket springs.
“We call them Midas Touch springs because they are soft on top and get firmer as you sink into the mattress,” says Colleran.
And the outside edge is hand-stitched: “It’s labour intensive but gives support right to the edge of the mattress.”
Same-day delivery of mattresses in a box may be convenient but he says: “Other companies work on a one mattress fits all idea even though some people like a firmer or softer one and some like mattresses you can turn for winter or summer – like ours.”
Few beds come with mattresses but here are some of the loveliest around.
