Man Utd 2-0 Brighton: Romelu Lukaku scored as the Red Devils battled into the FA Cup semis

Jose Mourinho named Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic in his 12-minute rant on Friday. He said his successor would be grateful he signed the Serb and bought the Belgian. But on Saturday, Mourinho was the one with reasons to be pleased he brought them both to Old Trafford.

With their manager under fire after United’s tame Champions League exit, they teamed up for the first goal. Matic scored the second. They combined to send United to Wembley. They have crashed out of Europe but they are still in the FA Cup.

Matic sealed their progress to the last four, heading in Ashley Young’s freekick. He also set up the win. He crossed, Lukaku evaded Lewis Dunk and broke the deadlock with a header. Man United’s top scorer had accused some of his team-mates of hiding against Sevilla.

No such accusations could be levelled at him on Saturday. It was Lukaku’s 12th goal in 11 FA Cup games. He scores in every competition but he is particularly prolific in this one. He has scored in every round.

Not since Chelsea striker Peter Osgood in 1970 has anyone struck in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds plus the semi-final and final. Lukaku could equal a late great.

And history has been on many a mind after Mourinho had questioned United’s football heritage. They have plenty in the FA Cup. They have won it 12 times. They even won it under Louis van Gaal. Only Arsenal have tasted glory more often in the oldest competition of them all.

Not that Old Trafford looked like Wembley in May on Saturday night. There were picturesque scenes with snow swirling around the Manchester sky. A hardy few, including Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia, who grew up in rather hotter climes, wore neither a long-sleeved shirt nor gloves.

Others were wrapped up warmer on the bench. Mourinho put the axe into Alexis Sanchez, dropping the Chilean after 10 games, a solitary goal and a wretched display against Sevilla. The January arrival’s name appeared next to Paul Pogba’s.

Two of United’s supposed superstars were instead substitutes. Mourinho selected as many of Van Gaal’s signings as his own, with three apiece in a starting 11 that showed five changes. United made the more positive start but, as Brighton began doggedly, chances were few and far between.

Lukaku volleyed wide from Valencia’s cross. Jesse Lingard had a shot that went high and wide. But it took Mourinho’s men almost half an hour to carve out a clear opening.

Jose Mourinho GETTY

Jose Mourinho ended a difficult week with a victory

Then Juan Mata exchanged passes with Anthony Martial before having a shot that Markus Suttner deflected wide. Mata took the resulting corner himself. The ball bounced off Shane Duffy for Chris Smalling, whose shot clipped goalkeeper Tim Krul’s shoulder and the post.

Albion boss Chris Hughton made six changes but Brighton, who were unlucky to lose at Old Trafford in the Premier League, showed similar determination. Dunk scored an own goal that day. He had a chance to make amends at the right end. He met Pascal Gross’ corner with a header that a diving Sergio Romero parried to safety. But that miss came at a cost.

Five minutes later, Lukaku headed United into the lead and Brighton’s task got harder. But they stepped up their efforts. Gross thudded a shot into the advertising hoardings after the break. The January buy Jurgen Locadia had two efforts saved by Romero.

The second stop was spectacular as the Argentinian did a fi ne impression of the rested David de Gea. The lively Locadia then headed wide when Solly March found him in space at the far post.

It represented another warning to United. They struggled to close the game out until Matic pounced. It was cruel for Brighton and their fans, who travelled in their hordes for their first FA Cup quarter-final in 32 years, even though they are unlikely to get back before 4am on Sunday.

Nemanja Matic

Diehard fans suffer the most from silly scheduling and an evening kick-off was particularly unfair to the visitors from East Sussex.

The United faithful also showed their support. A singing section at Old Trafford meant the home crowd were louder than usual. They sang Mourinho’s name.

If he alienated some fans with the Champions League loss, others are firmly behind him. They can follow him to Wembley.

Bailly was sent on by Mourinho in place of Alexis Sanchez with 10 minutes left of their Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The Blues took the lead through Willian before goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard turned the game on its head.

With Manchester United leading 2-1, the introduction of Bailly was seen as a way to shore up Mourinho’s defence.

But the Ivorian showed he had more than that one string to his bow – by going from substitute to postman.

Bailly took the letter, written on a piece of notepaper, in his hand, gave it a quick read before folding it up.

He shook hands with the man he was replacing, Sanchez, before sprinting on to the field to make a beeline to Matic.

The bemused midfielder didn’t appear to know what was going on at first as Bailly thrust the paper into his hand.

But Matic then realised it was a message from his boss as he unfolded the paper and read it before folding it back up.

The piece of Mourinho intervention appeared to work as United held on to take a 2-1 win.

Chelsea news LIVE updates – Express Sport brings you all the latest from Stamford Bridge

Saturday 21 October

Bakayoko not feeling Matic pressure

07.45 Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has claimed he does not feel the pressure to emulate his predecessor Nemanja Matic.

“I’m not here to do what Matic did. Matic is a player that I really like; he’s a very good footballer,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’m here to play my game, to try to implement what the coach asks, which means sticking tight to the opponents’ playmaker, getting forward when I can and, above all, controlling the ball well and anticipating the play

“I don’t want to do what Matic did here just because I play in the same position as him. I’m trying to do what I know how to do and if the coach is happy with that, great. If he isn’t, I’ll keep working hard to become the player that he wants me to be.”

Conte the magician

07.00: Antonio Conte has claimed he is the “magician” who predicted Chelsea’s mounting problems this season.

“I was a magician to anticipate this,” said Conte. “For sure, you hope you won’t have problems in your season.

“But I stay here to work. I stay here to put all of myself into this club, for the fans and the players. Me and my staff.

“I’m a person who is not afraid to face difficulties. My history speaks very clearly on that. I have fought in the relegation zone.

Friday 20 October

Conte sacked by Christmas

22.30: It’s today being claimed Antonio Conte will leave Chelsea before Christmas.

That’s according to Arsenal legend Perry Groves, who is sure Roman Abramovich will wield the axe.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Groves said: “Antonio Conte will be gone and away from Chelsea by Christmas.

“If someone keeps moaning and groaning, Roman Abramovich doesn’t care – he’s ruthless.”

Midfield injury chaos

21.30: Cess Fabregas is Antonio Conte’s only fit midfielder ahead of their match with Watford.

David Luiz picked up an injury against Roma, N’Golo Kane is out and Danny Drinkwater is just back in training, while Tiemoue Bakayoko also has a knock.

When asked about his team selection for Saturday’s clash, Conte said: “Honestly at the moment I can tell nothing about the starting XI for tomorrow.

“I have many doubts. I hope in these 24 hours to try to recover some players. It could be [Cesc is only one fit in midfield].”

Chelsea fans should forget about Man Utd new boy Matic, Bakayoko is superhuman – Pat Nevin https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-fans-should-forget-about-man-utd-new-boy-matic-bakayoko-is-superhuman-pat-nevin/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-fans-should-forget-about-man-utd-new-boy-matic-bakayoko-is-superhuman-pat-nevin/#respond Tue, 22 Aug 2017 15:00:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-fans-should-forget-about-man-utd-new-boy-matic-bakayoko-is-superhuman-pat-nevin/

Chelsea sold Matic to Manchester United in a £40million deal this summer, with Bakayoko coming in as his replacement from Monaco for the same price.

Blues manager Antonio Conte has been heavily criticised for selling the 29-year-old, who was crucial in last season’s title success.

But Nevin reckons brining in “superhuman” Bakayoko, at six years younger than Matic, is a great piece of business.

Bakayoko made his Chelsea debut on Sunday in the 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley, making his return from a knee operation during the summer.

Nevin told the club’s website: “Nemanja Matic has gone and has made a fine start at United, so well done him.

“He did a great job for this club and we are grateful for that. Many were quick to suggest it was a mistake to let him go.

“But if Tiemoue is as good, he is also crucially six years younger and that counts for a great deal when you are building a squad.

“His energy levels on the day were bordering on superhuman considering the lack of training and match fitness.

“You can only guess at what else he will have to offer in the future when you see him striding away from top players who are many weeks, or even months, ahead of him in their season’s fitness regimes.”

Chelsea selling Nemanja Matic is big surprise: He’s best ever in Premier League – Pardew https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-selling-nemanja-matic-is-big-surprise-hes-best-ever-in-premier-league-pardew/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-selling-nemanja-matic-is-big-surprise-hes-best-ever-in-premier-league-pardew/#respond Mon, 14 Aug 2017 04:05:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-selling-nemanja-matic-is-big-surprise-hes-best-ever-in-premier-league-pardew/

Matic joined Manchester United from champions Chelsea in July for a fee of around £40million.

The Serbia international had helped the Blues to two league titles in three years after Jose Mourinho re-signed him from Benfica in 2014.

Mourinho, now at Old Trafford, has reunited himself with the 29-year-old, with Chelsea signing Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco as his replacement.

Pardew believes Mourinho will be over the moon with the signing because Matic is the best defensive midfielder the Premier League has seen.

And he reckons Paul Pogba will benefit from having him in the side.

“Pogba had to protect last year, he had to fill that hole but Matic just does it automatically,” Pardew said on Sky Sports.

“He’s the best that I’ve ever seen in the Premier League, in the last sort of seven or eight years anyway.

“When he’s played at Chelsea he’s been terrific, he was terrific at Benfica.

“Now he’s come here to do the job, I was very, very surprised that Chelsea have let him go.

“For whatever reason he is here, I think Jose must be falling over himself!”

8: Lucky. Pablo Zabaleta dithers and Marcus Rashford nicks it off him, but can’t control his second touch.

There was a bit of debate whether Jose Mourinho would start the youngster alongside Romelu Lukaku, but his displays in pre-season makes him essential in my book.

5: Slaven Bilic is wildly gesticulating already. If you can’t imagine what that looks like, imagine trying to help a lorry driver reverse into a tiny parking space.

3: Am I watching this match in fast-forward? Great tempo to the start of this match with the ball being pinged around everywhere. Joe Hart receives a backpass and very nearly hits it straight out of play. Not the most confident start from the Manchester City loanee.

1: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

We’re underway! You can imagine the wonderful reception Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta received from the United faithful…

15:58: The players are just emerging from the tunnel now folks. Old Trafford is jam-packed and the atmosphere is electrifying.

Ready for the final match of the week? Me neither, but I’m afraid it’s happening.

15:55: What?! I don’t approve of this.

West Ham striker Javier Hernandez admits he does not know if he will celebrate a debut goal against former club Manchester United.

The 29-year-old joined the Hammers from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, two years after he left United for the Bundesliga side.

“I don’t know if I will celebrate if I score at Old Trafford,” he said.

“It’s my old club, my old fans, my old stadium but it’ll be my first goal for West Ham.

“I am not thinking about the celebration, I just want to have the chance to start and get my team the result.”

15:50: Who’s making their competitive league debuts today then? Might be quicker to go through those who aren’t!

Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku, Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez, Pablo Zabaleta and Joe Hart will all be hoping to impress.

15:45: Jose Mourinho says more players need to chip in with goals this season.

I bloody hope they listen, I’ve got Henrikh Mkhitaryan in my Fantasy Football side…

Anyway, Mourinho knows they were over-reliant on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goals last season and wants more support for Romelu Lukaku.

“In my other clubs what I had was more players scoring goals,” he said. “Midfield players scoring goals, wingers scoring goals, central defenders good in the air scoring goals at set-pieces.

“We always had that so my teams always had the goalscorer, we always had the guy that scores more goals, but then we had the winger that scored 15 goals, we had the midfield player who scored 10 goals, we had the central defender that scored five goals.

“And last season that didn’t happen much – we were focused on the goals that our striker was scoring and when he was not scoring, the team was a little bit in trouble to win matches.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Change:I have such a great feeling about this game. We’re about to put in the performance of the week.

The Happy Hammer:All about the performance today, a result would be great but let’s see a team playing for each other and the club.

Armand:Come on lads!! Ive been waiting too long to be disappointed!! Red Romelu, you better bag that brace son!

15:40: Analysis from our reporter Richard Tanner, at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has made five changes form the team that started the Super Cup clash with Real Madrid.

Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford are all in.

Out go Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian, Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard and Victor Lindelof.

The first four are named on the bench but there is no place in the squad for new boy Lindelof.

It means there are two players making their Premier League debuts for United – Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

West Ham have four PL debutants with Slaven Bilic naming summer signings Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic, Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Hernandez in his team.

Hart, inevitably, was greeted with boos, jeers and cries of “City reject!” as he came out to warm-up.

“Little Pea” Hernandez received a far warmer reception after his four-year spell with United.

15:35: Here’s your starting XI’s folks…

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Valencia, Jones, Bailly, Blind, Matic, Pogba, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Rashford, Lukaku.

Subs: Martial, Smalling, Lingard, Romero, Ander Herrera, Fellaini, Darmian.

West Ham XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Reid, Ogbonna, Masuaku, Noble, Obiang, Fernandes, Ayew, Arnautovic, Hernandez.

Subs: Cresswell, Fonte, Adrian, Sakho, Collins, Byram, Rice.

Referee: Martin Atkinson.

15:30: Good afternoon folks, sorry that I’m late to the party – I’ve just been finishing up with the match at St James’ Park.

Tottenham cruised to victory over Newcastle, and Manchester United will be hoping for a similar result against West Ham today.

But Slaven Bilic and his side aren’t just here to make up the numbers, they want to get points on the board early and are hoping Javier Hernandez can hurt his former employers.

Manchester United v West Ham: Romelu Lukaku has scored in seven of his last eight games against West Ham

MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS

Jose Mourinho has no fresh injury concerns heading into Manchester United’s Premier League opener against West Ham at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo remain out as they continue to recover from long-term injuries sustained last season.

Eric Bailly and Phil Jones missed Tuesday’s UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid through suspension, but their continental suspension does not impact domestic matches.

WEST HAM TEAM NEWS

West Ham expect defender Aaron Cresswell to be available for today’s clash.

Captain Mark Noble has shaken off a minor toe problem which saw the midfielder miss a couple of day’s training, but Michail Antonio will not be involved as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Striker Javier Hernandez could feature against his old club, while fellow summer signings Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and teenager Sead Haksabanovic could also make their Hammers debut.

Forward Andy Carroll (groin), Diafra Sakho (back), midfielder Manuel Lanzini and Cheikhou Kouyate (both knee) all continue their rehabilitation.

Nemanja Matic to Man Utd: Chelsea boss Antonio Conte opens up about ‘great loss’ https://briefnews.eu/nemanja-matic-to-man-utd-chelsea-boss-antonio-conte-opens-up-about-great-loss/ https://briefnews.eu/nemanja-matic-to-man-utd-chelsea-boss-antonio-conte-opens-up-about-great-loss/#respond Wed, 09 Aug 2017 13:41:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nemanja-matic-to-man-utd-chelsea-boss-antonio-conte-opens-up-about-great-loss/

The Premier League champions surprisingly sold Matic to rivals Manchester United last month for £40million.

Matic played an integral role in Chelsea winning the league title twice in three years but the Serbian made way for the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko, who joined from Monaco for £40m.

Conte has previously hinted Chelsea went against his wishes by selling Matic, especially to a direct rival.

And speaking at the Premier League Launch in London today, the Italian coach said he had to accept the departure of the 29-year-old.

“Matic knows very well what I think about him,” Conte said Sky Sports.

“The importance for me about this player, who is a really good player, a top player, very important for our team, but sometimes you must accept this crazy transfer market.

“And sometimes you must accept different decisions. But he is a great loss for us.”

Chelsea have made four major signings in the window so far and Conte feels his side will struggle to retain their title without more players.

Conte added: “Yes, for sure. This league is not easy.

“Six teams are very strong and you must be prepared. I hope to be able to improve our squad.

“The transfer market is not finished. We want to be competitive and we want to fight for the title again. The club knows my priorities.

“It won’t be easy. It’s a great challenge for us to try and retain the title but we are working hard.”

Nemanja Matic confirmed as Man Utd player and says he's 'DELIGHTED' for Mourinho reunion https://briefnews.eu/nemanja-matic-confirmed-as-man-utd-player-and-says-hes-delighted-for-mourinho-reunion/ https://briefnews.eu/nemanja-matic-confirmed-as-man-utd-player-and-says-hes-delighted-for-mourinho-reunion/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 15:48:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nemanja-matic-confirmed-as-man-utd-player-and-says-hes-delighted-for-mourinho-reunion/

Jose Mourinho turned his attentions to a reunion with the Serbia international, having failed to persuade Tottenham into selling Eric Dier.

But the United boss is happy to have sealed a move for Matic, who was a key player under Mourinho at Stamford Bridge. Matic has signed a three-year deal at the club.

Boss Mourinhosaid: “Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player. He represents everything we want in a footballer; loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player.

“I would like to thank him for his desire to join us because without that, it would be impossible to have him here. I am sure our players and supporters will love him. A big welcome to our new number 31.”

Matic said: “I am delighted to have joined Manchester United. To work with Jose Mourinho once again was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“I have enjoyed my time at Chelsea and would like to thank the club and the fans for their support. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and to start training with them.

“This is a very exciting time for the club and I am looking forward to playing my part in creating more history for this great club.”

Antonio Conte opted to bring Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco to Chelsea as a replacement in midfield for Matic.

And while the Blues ace had interest from Juventus, he has chosen to sign for United and stay in the Premier League.

Yesterday when quizzed on Matic, Jose Mourinho revealed: “I know that he wants the move very very much.

“When he wants [the move] very much, the chance is bigger.

“I think we have a chance but in football until it’s official, I saw so many things happen.”

Fans were teased yesterday too when a picture of Matic wearing a Manchester United training top with the No31 was leaked on Twitter.

But with the deal now official, supporters could see the 28-year-old make his debut in Wednesday’s friendly against Sampdoria.

Express Sport looks at five things you may not have known about the Serbian international.

FAMILY AFFAIR

Matic was coached by his father at his first youth-team club, Vrelo, before joining several other youth teams including Obrenovac 1905, Red Star Belgrade and Partizan. However, he is not the only Matic to make it in the professional ranks. His younger brother, Uros, is a central midfielder who plays for Danish side Copenhagen. The 27-year-old started his career at Slovakian side Kosice, where Nemanja was a first-team regular, and would join his older brother at Benfica in 2013. A year later, Uros signed for Dutch side NAC Breda before joining Austrian side Sturm Graz and then Copenhagen in January 2017. He made 39 appearances in all competitions last season and also featured in the Europa League.

HIS FOOTBALL CAREER COULD HAVE TAKEN A DIFFERENT PATH

Prior to joining Chelsea for his first spell in 2009, Matic had a trial with then-Premier League side Middlesbrough and was set to join the club after an international break with Serbia. However, talks broke down between the north-east side and Kosice before the Blues stepped in to snap up the midfielder for £1.5million. Where would his career be now if he joined Boro?

HE USED TO BE AN ATTACKING MIDFIELDER

The 28-year-old was originally signed as a playmaker by Carlo Ancelotti in 2009 but struggled to break into the first team with the likes of Germany international Michael Ballack and stalwart Michael Essien ahead of him in the midfield pecking order. However, the transfer to Benfica in 2011 saw manager Jorge Jesus change his role into a defensive midfielder, where he has become one of the most consistent players in the position ever since. Matic has shown he can still contribute in the final third of the pitch too, with long-range efforts against Everton and Tottenham in recent seasons reminding fans that he is not a one-trick pony.

REFUSED TO PLAY FOR SERBIA

Whilst at Benfica, Matic refused to play for his country under the management of Sinisa Mihajlovic, citing the fact that he did play a single minute during his five previous call-ups before returning to the squad for a World Cup qualifier against Croatia in September 2013, where he was sent off. He also threatened to quit international football in November 2015 after criticising his Serbia team-mates as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat to Czech Republic with qualification to Euro 2016 already out of the question with a fourth-placed finish in their group.

MOURINHO RATES HIM

The Portuguese manager was the man who brought Matic back to Stamford Bridge from Benfica for a fee around £20million to reinforce Chelsea’s central midfield. Mourinho spoke glowingly of the Serbian on his second unveiling, he said: “He has grown as a player in Portugal and has become a fantastic all-round midfielder. I like him a lot because of his stability. He is a very stable player for someone who is still so young, only 25.” When Mourinho took over at Manchester United last summer, the 54-year-old was linked with the central midfielder but the move was blocked by Chelsea boss Antonio Conte. He has now fulfilled his wish at the second time of asking.

Jose Mourinho's masterplan: How Nemanja Matic solves Man Utd's midfield puzzle https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinhos-masterplan-how-nemanja-matic-solves-man-utds-midfield-puzzle/ https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinhos-masterplan-how-nemanja-matic-solves-man-utds-midfield-puzzle/#respond Sun, 30 Jul 2017 22:53:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinhos-masterplan-how-nemanja-matic-solves-man-utds-midfield-puzzle/

The reunion between United manager Jose Mourinho and his former Chelsea midfielder came at a hefty £40million price tag – almost twice the fee the Blues paid Benfica for Matic six years ago. But the impact could have a far greater influence on this United team.

Pogba’s return to United last season drew mixed reviews, with Mourinho leading the cheerleaders who claimed his form justified his status as the world’s most expensive player.

But with Pogba all too often required to take up a defensive midfield role for Mourinho last season, it was frequently difficult to make the case that the young Frenchmen looked like an £89m footballer.

Freed to use his power and pace more in the opposition half, Pogba threatened enough to suggest he should be more than capable of adding to the five league goals he scored last season, not least because he also struck the woodwork six times.

Ander Herrera, one of United’s most consistently impressive performers last season, could be another to benefit from Matic’s ability to provide cover for Mourinho’s back four.

Matic also offers Mourinho some added tactical flexibility for the new season, either playing as the solitary holding midfielder or, on occasion, operating alongside a team-mate in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Veteran Michael Carrick also adds to the depth Mourinho can call upon for that role.

The Serbian’s 6’4” stature also satisfies an apparently important Mourinho requirement as the United manager continues his tendency to recruit players who would look just as at home on a basketball court as a football field.

Pogba, Eric Bailly last summer, and Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof this, all tower way over six-feet tall and will help make United a physically daunting opponent if nothing else this season. There should be little excuse for a lack of results from set-pieces, at both ends of the field.

Short-term, Matic’s arrival this week will also serve the important function of appeasing Mourinho, who had grown increasingly vocal during the club’s tour of the United States about their failure to add the final two big-money signings that he wanted to make this close season.

“I’m happy with my squad but I would like to have two more players,” said Mourinho last week. “A midfield player that would give me more balance, more options to the team.”

Matic certainly ticks that box and, as Mourinho went on to talk about his final target being an attacking player who could operate on either flank, he was clearly referring to Ivan Perisic, the £48m-rated Inter Milan star whom the Italian club have so far insisted is not leaving.

Mourinho’s comments were taken as one of the manager’s trademark passive-aggressive complaints, aimed in the direction of the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and it was probably no coincidence that, within days of Mourinho’s statement, a deal for Matic was clinched.

United were reluctant to pay Chelsea’s £40m asking price for a player who turns 29 on Tuesday, but the fact that Mourinho delivered two trophies and Champions League football in his first season at Old Trafford has certainly strengthened his bargaining position with his employers.

Now the pressure and focus will return to Woodward as he attempts to convince Inter to do business for Perisic with the new Premier League season less than two weeks away.
