While most of us are still recovering from the frenzied orgy of capitalist affection that is Valentine’s Day, companies from all over the industry continue to fly forth like arrows fired from Cupid’s bow. Google announced it will be spreading some of its “computer love” to nearly half the US by year’s end, while Activision isn’t showing its now ex-employees any. Oh yeah, and Benedict Cumberbatch is Satan.

Google apparently has a spare $ 13 billion burning a hole in its pockets and, as such, announced plans this week to pursue “major expansions” in 14 states, raising its total US footprint to nearly half of America’s provinces. The plan could lead to as many as 10,000 new construction jobs, though there’s no word on the workforce needs once the buildings have been built.

$ 1,000 is a lot of money. Especially for a pair of augmented reality glasses that just aren’t that bright. Engadget reporter Nicole Lee puts a pair of the “smart specs” through their paces.

More than 76 years after it was lost to the ocean’s depths, families and descendents of those who served aboard the USS Hornet can finally rest knowing the fate of the WWII warship and its crew. A sonar drone operated by the late Paul Allen’s undersea search operation discovered the largely intact vessel more than 17,000 feet below the surface near the Solomon Islands.

Everybody’s favorite neighborhood wizard will be taking on a new challenge in Amazon’s upcoming Good Omens series by playing Satan. And not just any Crown Prince of Darkness — no, no, a 400-foot tall animated Crown Prince of Darkness. Can. Not. Wait.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A marquee company, a real titan of its respective industry, enjoys a banner year of sales, revenue and profits. The company then turns around and lays off 800 staffers in order to “restructure” the business. Because that’s what Blizzard just did.

Look to your left. Now look to your right. Of you and the two people on either side, at least one has had to endure “severe” online harassment. Maybe figure out which one of you it is and give them a hug.
]]>Britain’s favorite TV math genius Rachel Riley has spooked fans of the hit numbers and letters show Countdown with a social media confessional seemingly admitting she gets fed her quick-fire answers through an earpiece.
Riley, who took over from Carol Vorderman as co-presenter of the daytime quiz show back in 2009, is famed for her incredible ability to solve numerical problems in a matter of seconds.
The 32-year-old has now posted a mysterious revelation on Twitter, in which tells fans she has a confession to make.
“I’m bad at maths. I get fed the answers in an earpiece. I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world but at times I feel like a bit of a fraud,” she states.
Riley’s online video has shocked many people, with one fan responding that their “universe just exploded.” Another person spoke of their “heartbreak” at hearing the news.
Nnnnooooo!!!!!
Hear that? That's the sound of hearts breaking!
This has to be a wind up? 😂

One fan even went as far as to say they are finished with watching the Channel 4 program.
I’m done with countdown now

The fact you are honest about it and have the guts to come out and say it is testament to the person you are! Never have anything against honest people. Well done Rachel!

If Carol Vorderman is behind the camera forcing you to say this at gunpoint, BLINK TWICE!!………
— Gaz (@G4RYR) November 24, 2018
If true, the revelation would be a shock given Riley has a degree in mathematics from Oxford University. However, not everyone is convinced the math whizz is telling the truth, with some speculating that her confession is part of another TV show or an online prank.
Clearly not….

One man suggested that perhaps Riley was engaging in some good old fashioned trolling.
I think she’s trolling the trolls. She’s brighter than a lighthouse

With the president’s made up migrant caravan crisis having mysteriously vanished now that the midterms are over, it’s time to take a look at the other movers and shakers from the industry this week. Volkswagen announced the development of a $ 23k Tesla rival, China has developed security cameras can now ID people by their gait, and Google’s built a computer model to guess which restaurants will give you the runs.

165 feet: Everybody walks in their own weirdly wonderful way. Unfortunately, China’s state surveillance system can now spot you because of that gait from more than 150 feet, even if your face is obscured. So the next time you see someone walking through downtown Beijing like they’re fleeing a sandworm, this is probably why (though maybe get to higher ground too, just to be safe).

20 years of lie: Nice, some guy in the Netherlands wants a court to declare his 69-year-old self as 49-years-old so he can have better luck on Tinder. Which will totally work right up until the moment that he insists they go to dinner at 4:30 in the afternoon at Golden Corral so he can be home in time for Matlock.

30 percent more food poisoning: It’s not easy being a health inspector (yes, even Hugo has got it rough) but there’s some help on the horizon from Google. The search giant has developed an algorithm that can spot incidents of food poisoning by cross-referencing a user’s search for terms like “diarrhea” against their cached location data. During trials in Las Vegas and Chicago, the model identified unsafe food conditions 52 percent of the time, compared with just 22 percent of routine inspections in those cities.

£1 plus 20p per minute: That’s how much Bird’s new UK pilot program will rent street scooters for. Unfortunately, the zippy contraptions will only be made available along a single path in east London’s Olympic Park.

20,000 e-bikes: Speaking of alternative transportation, Paris announced this week that it will unleash an armada of electric bicycles upon its city streets in a large-scale effort to help reduce traffic and counteract climate change. Users will be able to rent a bike for 40 euros a month.
$ 23,000: Volkswagen just fired a shot across Tesla’s bow, announcing this week that it has begun development on a Model 3 competitor that will likely cost a whopping $ 12,000 less than Tesla’s offering when it goes on sale sometime after 2020.

Gavin McInnes and his gang of Proud Boys, newly minted stars of the Alt-Right, took their first steps back toward irrelevancy this week when they got themselves banned from Facebook. At the same time, we’ve had to say goodbye to a pair of space-based telescopes (Kepler and Dawn), as they reached the end of their operational lifespans; Roscosmos blamed the recent Soyuz launch failure on a bent sensor pin and Apple announced that it would no longer report the sales numbers for the stars of its product lineup — iPhones, iPads and Macs — after it was reported that smartphone sales slumped six percent globally this year.

“A 10-ton truck traveling at 600 mph”: The US Navy showed off one of its newest toys this week, a nuke-hunting ballistic “kill vehicle” that knocks incoming missiles out of the sky through sheer force of physics. This is only the second time that the tests have been successful (two other attempts failed to connect) but that’s still not bad for a prototype system described as being akin to “a bullet shooting a bullet”.

11 years: After more than a decade of service, NASA’s Dawn spacecraft will not see another sunrise, having run completely out of fuel this week. Oddly, it wasn’t the only space telescope to go dark, the Kepler mission came to a similar conclusion after expending the last of its hydrazine fuel source.

6 percent: Turns out that despite there being seven billion of us, the worldwide market for smartphones is indeed finite. Global handset sales dropped by 6 percent over the last 3 months, which could explain why Apple is suddenly so reluctant to share its own sales numbers.

$ 81 million per seat: It’s no small feat getting crew and cargo up to the International Space Station, so when things go wrong with the Soyuz launch system, as they did earlier this month, technicians literally pore over the craft to see what went wrong. In this case it was a bent sensor pin that caused the launch failure. Luckily, nobody was hurt during the abort and Russia already has a backup launch scheduled for the start of December.
$ 60,000: That seems like an awful lot of money to offer a person to recommend your gimmick product to their million-plus Instagram followers, then sue them for when they don’t do it, but hey we’re clearly living in the end times where being an “influencer” is a real job, so sure, why not.

Between the political theater and unreal earnings reports, this has been a surreal week for the ages. But while you were glued to the news feeds, an AI-generated art piece sold for silly money, NASA fixed the Hubble by jiggling its handle and a band of clever thieves perpetrated a multimillion-download ad scam that would put the Ocean’s crew to shame.
300,000 animations amidst 100 hour weeks: Red Dead Redemption is one of the most anticipated games of the year but ran afoul of fans even before its release over accusations that Rockstar Games had been working its developers like rented mules ahead of its debut. But can players find a way to separate the heroic onscreen action with the dastardly deeds of the game’s publishers? Engadget Senior Editor Jessica Conditt explains.

46 charges: Speaking of video game villains, human canker sore Tyler Barriss has been charged with 46 counts related to his repeated swatting of other gamers, one incident of which killed a man.

0 subscription fees: If you’re looking for a happy (trees) medium between free-but-online Pixlr image editing and powerful-but-costly Photoshop, FXhome might suit your needs. The $ 150 RAW image editor combines the best functions of Lightroom and PS, without the kidney-costing monthly subscription fees.

$ 432,000: Sure it looks like Ecce Homo post-Giménez restoration and was drawn by a computer but that didn’t stop folks with more money than artistic taste from spending six figures on the Portrait of Edmond Belamy. The piece was originally expected to go for between $ 7,000 and $ 10,000.

115 million installations: Life imitates art but so can crime. And as far as online ad scams go, this one was a masterpiece. Spreading the game out over more than 100 apps, a digital thieving ring then monitored and recorded the device usage of the targeted users, then used that information to generate fake traffic and fool an online ad service into paying them millions for fraudulent in-app ads. Obviously, this is wrong and bad and very very illegal, but damn if it isn’t devilishly clever.

7.5 years: That’s how long the Hubble Space Telescope’s gyroscope has been on the fritz. Turns out that all NASA had to do to fix it was jiggle the proverbial handle. Here’s a video from mission control showing the highly technical repair process:

Enlarge / Geometry puts some real design constraints on Darth Vader’s desire for a spherical Death Star. (credit: Ben Orlin)
Opting to build the Death Star in the shape of a sphere may not have been classic Star Wars villain Darth Vader’s wisest move, according to math teacher Ben Orlin. He investigates this burning question, and so much more, in his fabulous new book, Math with Bad Drawings, after Orlin’s blog of the same name.
Orlin started using his crude drawings as a teaching tool. He drew a figure of a dog one day on his chalkboard to illustrate a math problem, and it was so bad the class broke out in laughter. “To see the alleged expert reveal himself as the worst in the room at something—anything—can humanize him and, perhaps, by extension, the subject,” he writes. When he started his blog, he knew that pictures would be crucial to helping readers visualize the mathematical abstractions. Since he had no particular artistic talent, he opted to just cop to it up front. And thus, the “Math with Bad Drawings” blog was born.
The book is a more polished, extensive discussion of the concepts that pepper Orlin’s blog, featuring his trademark caustic wit, a refreshingly breezy conversational tone, and of course, lots and lots of very bad drawings. It’s a great, entertaining read for neophytes and math fans alike, because Orlin excels at finding novel ways to connect the math to real-world problems—or in the case of the Death Star, to problems in fictional worlds.

This has been quite the “disruptive” week with TechCrunch’s marquee event going on at the San Francisco Moscone Center, and not just for startups. InfoWars was disinvited from yet another social media platform, Walmart is drastically expanding its self-driving Tesla truck order, and the world’s largest wind farm just opened for business.

19 survey campaigns: Reports of the Kepler Space Telescope’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Despite effectively being out of fuel and having been powered down since early summer, the plucky spacecraft decided to resurrect itself this week and continue on with its search for exoplanets.

Way too many cameras: Look, you can put five cameras on a single smartphone if you want, Nokia. But would it kill you to make a few of them X-ray?

590,000 homes powered: The world’s largest wind farm commenced operations this week off the Cumbrian coast in the Irish Sea. Its 87 turbines will generate 659 megawatts but that won’t hold the record for long — a larger 1,200 megawatt farm is expected to come online in 2020.

30 more semis: Tesla’s going to Canada! Or at least its self-driving big rigs are. Walmart announced this week that it had purchased nearly three dozen additional vehicles to help run cargo between the company’s Canadian locations.

All of them: That’s how many social media platforms Alex Jones is now banned from. Though I guess there’s always Gab.

4 Stars: Uber Australia announced this week that it would start suspending passengers whose rider scores fall below 4 stars. On a 5-star scale. That doesn’t make any sense.

$ 1,500: The phrase “I want to see you sweat” takes on a new meaning with the MIRROR smart mirror. But given the $ 40/month subscription and personal training that tops out at $ 75 per session, your wallet is going to be getting the workout.

RETURERS/Stephen Lam and ClassDojo & Ad Astra Conundrums
Elon Musk’s secretive LA private school, Ad Astra, has developed a new tool for teachers and students.
Educational software developer ClassDojo is partnering up with Ad Astra to develop a set of critical thinking puzzles called “Conundrums” that they’ll release to teachers and students this fall. The tools are meant to offer the type of critical thinking espoused by Ad Astra, although Ad Astra is not using this specific tool.
The Conundrums pose open-ended critical thinking or ethical problems for the students, who are then encouraged to discuss the issues among themselves and reason out a solution. They tend to pose somewhat more nuanced and complicated questions than most elementary or middle school curricula address.
Here are a couple examples of the Conundrums, provided to Business Insider by ClassDojo:
