In a unanimous 9-0 ruling on Friday, the court ordered that reporter Ben Makuch must hand over his materials on a man by the name of Farah Mohamed Shirdon. Makuch wrote three articles about Shirdon and his involvement with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in 2014.
The ruling was due to the fact that it found Canada’s interest in prosecuting crime to be greater than the media’s right to privacy in its news gathering, the Toronto Star reported.
Shirdon, a Canadian citizen, left for Turkey in March 2014 and then appeared in an Islamic State propaganda video that turned up on the internet. In the footage, he tore up his Canadian passport, threw it into a fire, and said: “With help from Allah, we are coming to slaughter you.”
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been actively in pursuit of Makuch’s materials since 2015, when it obtained a production order under the Criminal Code. It directed Vice Media and Makuch to hand over all documents and data relating to communications with Shirdon, who is now believed to have been killed.
Refusing to give it to authorities so easily, Makuch brought an application to end the production order. That was, however, dismissed, and the decision was upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal.
The case then went to the Supreme Court, which began hearing arguments in May. Vice Media’s argument was that lower courts had not been correctly applying nine conditions previously set out by the Supreme Court when it comes to assessing the reasonableness of a media outlet search. The Supreme Court justices sided against the media outlet on Friday.
One of the justices, Michael Moldaver, wrote that the production order issued for Makuch’s materials should stand because handing them over would not reveal a confidential source, and no “off the record” or “not for attribution” communications would be disclosed.
Speaking after the ruling, Vice Media called it a “dark day for press freedom, which is a basic tenet of democracy…while we’ve lost this battle, nothing can shake our belief that a free press is instrumental to a truthful understanding of the world in which we live.”

THEY make an intriguing posse: about 160 “scouts” in jeans and muddy boots, jumping out of cars with ropes in hand, plunging deep into corn (maize) and soyabean fields across the American Midwest. They are not just farmers. They include commodity traders and hedge-fund managers. Their quest: to predict this year’s harvest by using ropes as a measure and counting, to the last ear of corn and soyabean pod, the yield in a given area. “We have a really beautiful crop. I think this is going to be a record,” says Ted Seifried, a market strategist at Zaner Group, a commodities brokerage in Chicago, during a stop in Nebraska on August 21st. The mud on his boots is a reassuring sign of ample moisture in the soil.
But when he gets back into the car with others on the Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour, the talk turns to darker subjects, such as trade tensions, collapsing currencies and what he calls the start of an “economic cold war” between America and China. “While we’re driving the 15-25 miles from field…

Philip Pullman‘s His Dark Materials series is getting the adaptation treatment, again. The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper will helm a new adaptation of the YA fantasy series, and Logan breakout Dafne Keen will star. Also, rumor has it that Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda has joined the cast as well. More on the new His Dark Materials movie below.
Pullman’s His Dark Materials saga made the leap from page to screen in 2007 with The Golden Compass. The film was a disappointment, despite featuring a killer cast including Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and Eva Green. At the time, studios were clamoring to adapt more YA books into film franchises to compete with the popular Harry Potter movies. Alas, The Golden Compass floundered at the box office, and the film series died before it could get started.
Now, Deadline reports His Dark Materials is getting another shot, thanks to The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper. Dafne Keen, who made quite an impression as Laura in Logan, has been cast to star in Hooper’s film as Lyra, the main character of the series. On top of that, Baz Bamigboye, a reporter for the Daily Mail, is claiming Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda has joined the cast as well.

While His Dark Materials consists primarily of three books – Northern Lights (1995, published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife (1997), and The Amber Spyglass (2000) – Deadline claims Hooper has negotiated to turn the new adaptation will consist of an eight-part series. Author Pullman wrote several additional short stories and books set in the Dark Materials world – Lyra’s Oxford, Once Upon a Time In the North, The Collectors, The Book of Dust – so perhaps Hooper’s adaptation will borrow from them as well. Or perhaps Hooper will simply break the three books up into eight specific segments.
BBC One ordered the film series, penned by Wonder screenwriter Jack Thorne, in 2015. Since then, Hooper has been working behind-the-scenes to land the directing gig, and now he has it. In Philip Pullman’s books, the main character Lyra lives in a parallel world in which human souls can take the form of lifelong animal companions. Here’s a synopsis for the three main books:
These thrilling adventures tell the story of Lyra and Will—two ordinary children on a perilous journey through shimmering haunted otherworlds. They will meet witches and armored bears, fallen angels and soul-eating specters. And in the end, the fate of both the living—and the dead—will rely on them. Phillip Pullman’s spellbinding His Dark Materials trilogy has captivated readers for over twenty years and won acclaim at every turn. It will have you questioning everything you know about your world and wondering what really lies just out of reach.
The books have religious undertones – the stories are inspired, in part, by Paradise Lost – and have met with a fair share of controversy. Religious groups have criticized the books for promoting atheism, and Pullman, for his part, hasn’t shied away from the controversy. According to the author, the books aren’t so much anti-God as they are anti-organized religion. Whether or not these potentially controversial themes will make it into Hooper’s film remains to be seen.
The eight-part series is rumored to air on BBC One in late 2019 or early 2020.

Graphene may seem like a modern wonder-material, but it’s been with us for ages in the form of graphite. Graphene is a sheet of carbon atoms bonded to each other, just one atom thick; graphite is just an agglomeration of these sheets layered on top of each other. To study graphene, however, it took someone clever to devise a way of peeling single layers off from this agglomeration (the secret turned out to be a piece of tape).
Since then, we’ve identified a handful of additional chemicals that form sheets that are a few atoms thick. These have a variety of properties—some are semiconductors and have been combined with graphene to make electronic devices. To expand the range of device we can craft that build on the advantages of these atomically thin materials, a larger catalog of chemicals like this would be handy.
Now, a Lithuanian-Swiss team says it’s done just that. The team has found materials just like graphite: a bulk material with atomically thin layers hidden inside.

Engineers have 3D printed a shape-shifting smart gel that could revolutionize biomedical devices and pave the way for a new era of soft robotics.
Researchers at Rutgers University invented their 4D printing approach by combining a 3D object with temperature-responsive hydrogel. As temperatures change, so too does the shape of the object.
For the experiment, they used a lithography-based technique, involving printing layers of a special resin containing hydrogel and other chemicals, to create a chess piece.
The chess king was put in water. As temperatures increased, it dehydrated and shrank in size. When the temperatures fell again, it absorbed the water and returned to its original size.
According to the study published in Scientific Reports, the hydrogel begins to expel water and shrink in size at temperatures greater than 32C (approx. 90F).
Objects as miniscule as the width of a human hair up to those that are several millimeters long can be created with hydrogel using this fast and inexpensive method, according to the researchers.
“If you have full control of the shape, then you can program its function,” Howon Lee, senior author of the new study, said. “I think that’s the power of 3D printing of shape-shifting material. You can apply this principle almost everywhere.”

Hydrogels can be found in a variety of everyday objects from jello to diapers. Its use in biomedical applications is not new, though it has relied heavily on conventional, two-dimensional methods such as molding and lithography in the past.
This development could be a game-changer according to the engineers, who say it could lead to “living” structures in human organs and tissues, soft robots and targeted drug delivery.
“The full potential of this smart hydrogel has not been unleashed until now,” Lee said. “We added another dimension to it, and this is the first time anybody has done it on this scale. They’re flexible, shape-morphing materials. I like to call them smart materials.”

Reservation-holders are starting to get deliveries of their Model 3s at long last, but there’s rising ire among some who say that Tesla is swapping out premium interior materials for lower-quality cloth versions on premium trim packages without notice, explanation or any offer to discount the price.
Threads on both the Tesla Motors Club forum and Tesla Reddit page are filled with complaints from owners who say they’ve taken deliveries of the Model 3 sedan and paid $ 5,000 for premium upgrade packages but gotten interiors with cloth headliners, door accents, B-pillars and visors when they expected Alcantara. One owner took to Twitter to post photos of what he described as a “mix and match” interior in his new car.
@jonmcneill@Tesla@elonmusk where did the synthetic suede headliner go in #model3 premium upgrades? This mix and match nonsense is an accident, right? pic.twitter.com/hH3vFNCzLA
— Steeeeeeeeeeve (@worstofthymes) January 11, 2018
“Tesla better correct it,” user void-ninja said in a TMC thread. “Basic cloth is not acceptable in a $ 5,000 upgrade package when better materials are being specified.”
Tesla’s website makes no mention of Alcantara as a premium upgrade option for the Model 3, describing only “Premium heated seating and cabin materials throughout, including open pore wood decor and two rear USBs.” But reservation holders said they widely believed the $ 5,000 PUP package included the premium synthetic material, based on online reviews of the electric car, YouTube videos and other cues, including some of Tesla’s own marketing materials and reports from many of the first owners to take delivery. The Tesla marketing photo above, for example, appears to show Alcantara.
@elonmusk My delivery is scheduled for this Saturday, and I am very disappointed in Tesla’s decision to switch the Model 3’s interior material from ultra suede to average cloth w/o telling anyone. Feels very bait and switchy, and unacceptable from a co. like #Tesla. #TeslaModel3
— Alex Williams (@AlexPWilliams) January 11, 2018
Said one Reddit user, “if a couple thousand Model 3 owners have Alcantara and now Tesla uses a much less luxurious material surely this is grounds to readjust the PUP price. I get how financially important this car is to them but don’t fool me by saying premium touches and ship some textile stuff that a low end GM car has.”
It appears Tesla has a new issue to address among its rabid faithful. If you’re a PUP reservation holder, you might want to contact your service center.

The discovery of graphene—a one-atom-thick sheet of covalently bonded carbon atoms—inspired the research community to generate a variety of 2D materials. Graphene, MoS2, the silicon equivalent of graphene, and more all have distinct properties based on the chemical bonding among their component atoms. And it’s possible to leverage these properties to create commonplace devices on an unprecedentedly small scale, like a three-atom-thick LED.
Obviously, the more materials we have to work with, the better we can fine-tune one of these devices to our needs. But producing 2D materials is a challenge, as there are a limited number of substances that lend themselves to the chemically bonded layers we know how to work with. Now, an Australian-US team (writing in Science) has devised a way to make a broad class of atomically thin metal oxides, including 2D versions of materials already in use by the electronics industry. Their secret? A room temperature liquid metal.
This is one of those cases where a series of simple observations led to a major development. In many cases, pure metals will react with oxygen in the air to form a thin oxide layer on their surface. This, it turns out, is true for one of the metals that is liquid near room temperature: gallium, which melts at 30 degrees Celsius. Leave some liquid gallium exposed to the air, and it’ll form a thin film of gallium oxide on its surface.
