The reunion between United manager Jose Mourinho and his former Chelsea midfielder came at a hefty £40million price tag – almost twice the fee the Blues paid Benfica for Matic six years ago. But the impact could have a far greater influence on this United team.

Pogba’s return to United last season drew mixed reviews, with Mourinho leading the cheerleaders who claimed his form justified his status as the world’s most expensive player.

But with Pogba all too often required to take up a defensive midfield role for Mourinho last season, it was frequently difficult to make the case that the young Frenchmen looked like an £89m footballer.

Freed to use his power and pace more in the opposition half, Pogba threatened enough to suggest he should be more than capable of adding to the five league goals he scored last season, not least because he also struck the woodwork six times.

Ander Herrera, one of United’s most consistently impressive performers last season, could be another to benefit from Matic’s ability to provide cover for Mourinho’s back four.

Matic also offers Mourinho some added tactical flexibility for the new season, either playing as the solitary holding midfielder or, on occasion, operating alongside a team-mate in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Veteran Michael Carrick also adds to the depth Mourinho can call upon for that role.

The Serbian’s 6’4” stature also satisfies an apparently important Mourinho requirement as the United manager continues his tendency to recruit players who would look just as at home on a basketball court as a football field.

Pogba, Eric Bailly last summer, and Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof this, all tower way over six-feet tall and will help make United a physically daunting opponent if nothing else this season. There should be little excuse for a lack of results from set-pieces, at both ends of the field.

Short-term, Matic’s arrival this week will also serve the important function of appeasing Mourinho, who had grown increasingly vocal during the club’s tour of the United States about their failure to add the final two big-money signings that he wanted to make this close season.

“I’m happy with my squad but I would like to have two more players,” said Mourinho last week. “A midfield player that would give me more balance, more options to the team.”

Matic certainly ticks that box and, as Mourinho went on to talk about his final target being an attacking player who could operate on either flank, he was clearly referring to Ivan Perisic, the £48m-rated Inter Milan star whom the Italian club have so far insisted is not leaving.

Mourinho’s comments were taken as one of the manager’s trademark passive-aggressive complaints, aimed in the direction of the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and it was probably no coincidence that, within days of Mourinho’s statement, a deal for Matic was clinched.

United were reluctant to pay Chelsea’s £40m asking price for a player who turns 29 on Tuesday, but the fact that Mourinho delivered two trophies and Champions League football in his first season at Old Trafford has certainly strengthened his bargaining position with his employers.

Now the pressure and focus will return to Woodward as he attempts to convince Inter to do business for Perisic with the new Premier League season less than two weeks away.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Rob Mills, who plays the villain, revealed that his alter ego just wants to make a difference in Erinsborough High. 

“He’s there to do whatever it takes. If that means going to extreme lengths then that’s what he will do to leave a legacy and make an impact on the education system,” Rob revealed. 

The 34-year-old added that it doesn’t matter who stands in his way, saying: “I think Finn wants to leave a legacy of changing the education system.

“Susan just stands in the way. He sees her as an old hat in terms of education; she’s collateral damage,” Rob hinted. 

Neighbours fans have seen Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne) take ill after doctors found severe levels of opiates in her system. 

The Ramsey Street residents appear to slowly be cottoning on to the fact that this could be Finn’s doing as he tries to climb the career ladder.

Right now however, fans are wondering if he will get away with it, something that Rob couldn’t help but tease, saying: “He will get a victory, but it will be short-lived. 

“When people lie that much you get found out and it’s not good for them and I don’t think it will be good for Finn either. 

“There’s still hope for Finn redeeming himself,” Rob wished. 

The musical theatre actor also suggested that fans should feel sorry for the villain, joking: “You should absolutely feel sorry for him – he’s got an aneurism in his brain that’s about to burst!”

It had a booming shipbuilding industry on the River Dee and its 18th-century shot tower provided lead shot for the Napoleonic Wars.

No wonder it pulls in the tourists. It even has a full-time town crier. But the past decade has seen Cheshire’s county town fall from the UK’s 27th most popular shopping destination in 2006 to 66th place in 2014 and during the recession house building more or less ground to a halt.

That’s all about to change, thanks to Chester West and Chester Council’s master plan to renew a key quarter within the city with £300million retail and leisure facility Chester Northgate, to include a new six-screen cinema plus markets and restaurants in the existing Chester Library building.

The library is moving to the equally exciting £37million Storyhouse cultural centre, opening this summer with a new theatre and cinema in a refurbished Art Deco picture house.

Northgate is expected to create more than 1,000 new full-time jobs and there are plans for new housing there plus a four-star hotel with a spa and conference facilities.

Even the old lead shot tower is getting in on the act, with developers Whitecroft refurbishing the former lead works buildings to create 65 apartments within the historic sections and contemporary wings that will connect to the tower.

The Shot Tower, five minutes from Chester railway station – and links to London, Manchester and Liverpool – and within walking distance of the city centre, will have views of the adjacent Shropshire Union Canal and a heritage centre at the base of the tower.

The £15million project will transform what has been a derelict site since the lead company relocated in 2001 and comes after the listed buildings passed through several developers’ hands before and during the recession.

“We acquired it with planning permission in place and it has taken a developer with a bit of vision and local knowledge to bring that forward,” says Whitecroft development manager Simon Broster, who lives nearby.

Over a bridge across the canal is Chester’s new flagship Waitrose store, with a bronze metal cladding design that won awards for Broadway Malyan – the same company that has designed the two zinc-clad new wings of The Shot Tower development.

“The nice thing about the site is that there is something for everyone,” says Broster.

“Duplex units are attracting downsizers and the proximity to Liverpool and Manchester is generating interest from young professionals.

“It’s a mix of very modern and refurbished units that offer loft-style living with exposed brickwork and the new buildings being zinc-clad gives it a very contemporary look, which is not something you see that often in Chester.”

The duplexes and one, two and three-bedroom apartments are in the old industrial part of town just minutes from the new business quarter centred around offices at One City Place.

“It is just starting to define the new part of the city and that is the nice thing about the development: it is at the forefront of the business quarter,” says Broster.

One-bedroom apartments are on sale from £150,000 with Savills (016 1244 7705; savills.co.uk) and even though the development won’t be completed until 2018 Jamie Adam, head of residential development sales in Manchester, says: “The interest in The Shot Tower is typical of the market in general.

“There has been a slight predominance in downsizers, people in their late 50s and early 60s who are looking for a lifestyle change and a bit more flexibility.

“We have also agreed terms with people moving back from overseas but equally we have seen first-time buyers and Help To Buy will be available.

“From a buyers’ perspective Chester’s got the charm of a county town, the facilities of a larger town and character in abundance.

“The race course is an added attraction for a lot of people as well!”
